Go Mining! Interactive Tour Families are invited to get ‘hands-on’ as they discover even more about the lives of coal miners through the ages on our new interactive tour. • Get your hands dirty and experience life at the coal-face as it would have been for families in the early 1800s. • Find out more about how horses were once kept underground as you feed, muck-out and learn how to put their bridles on.

Little ones will love our new Little Diggers under 5’s play area and its brilliant allotment themed games. Eat, drink & shop: Pick up a souvenir in the shop and take a ‘pit stop’ in the Café – you must try one of our cupcakes, they’re delicious!
Library: The Museum’s Library is open to the public on specific dates across Autumn and Winter. Pop in for enquiries and research, or just to meet the librarians and have a quick look at the collections. Opening dates vary, please see our website for details
Stop by the stables to meet the ponies Eric and Ernie and our gentle giant Clydesdale Horse, Finn. Plus, find out about the role that ponies and horses played in coal mining through the centuries.

Underground Tour and Furnace Shaft: Stride out over the Lamp Room’s new glass-topped Furnace Shaft and peer down 140m! Visitors going below ground can also gaze from the bottom up as they start their underground tour experience!

New! Outdoors... Unearth the Unexpected! Kids and grown-ups can go wild with our brand new nature guide. Join Monty the mole as he takes you on an adventure around the nature trail and the Museum site. Pick up our handy re-usable, ring bound, activity cards from Reception and enjoy a day of interactive games and puzzles. – Suitable for all seasons and for just £3 per family!
