About the project

Seeing the Whole Picture is a project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The National Coal Mining Museum is using this funding to add to its art and photographic collections and to run workshops and activities for young people to help them find out more about the history of coal mining and its rich artistic heritage.

What’s On? Autumn 2012

The Seeing the Whole Picture project is coming to an end. To celebrate everything that has been achieved over the last four years we are holding an exhibition. The exhibition will show the acquisitions we have made, with subjects covering home life, the 1984/85 strike, the work of eminent coal miner artist George William Bissill and the fantastic work produced by our project partners. The exhibition will also feature three brand new art interactives designed to encourage everyone to make their own masterpieces and keep the connection between mining communities and art alive.

Artist Liz Pontin will be delivering a week of free underground sculpture workshops. The workshops will help students develop skills in observing and analysing artistic techniques and recreating these in 3D sculptures. Students will be accompanied by an exminer and use our new underground spaces to inspire their work. They will also develop these ideas on a larger scale by working collaboratively to create a sculptural installation using construction and assemblage techniques.

The Miners’ Strike through a lens 22 February 2012

The latest addition to the Seeing the Whole Picture project has been a collection of work by Tom McGuinness. This includes an oil painting (pictured) and three lithographs, each depicting a colliery village scene. McGuinness was born in 1926 in Witton Park, a former colliery village in South West Durham. He was a miner for most of his life, leaving in 1983 to become the artist in residence at Hartlepool Nuclear Power Station. His work is important both as a social history of many different aspects of a miner’s life and as a nationally significant expressionist artist.

Earlier in the year we provided photography students and enthusiasts with an opportunity to meet professional photographers Martin Jenkinson and Keith Pattison. Both men photographed the 1984/85 Miners’ Strike. Martin did so as a journalist and Keith as a six-month resident of a Durham colliery village. Each photographer talked about their different careers, their experiences and what inspired their images. Martin and Keith also explored the technical elements of their work and gave invaluable advice to the next generation of photographers.
