Namaskar It is our pleasure to update you on the Guwahati Comprehensive Cleft Care Center. This unique public private partnership is making daily progress towards achieving our goals of Increased Capacity, Decreased Costs, and a Cleft Free Assam. December 2011 has been another month full of progress and evolution at GC4, and we very much hope you enjoy this update. -‐-‐Team Guwahati

2161 Free Operations in Guwahati in 2011 It was a great year in Guwahati, starting with 509 patients receiving free surgical care during our mission in February. On February 17, the Guwahati Comprehensive Cleft Care Center (GC4) was inaugurated, and on May 9th our team performed the first operation here. We have performed 1576 operations in the new facility, and a total of 2161 operations in Guwahati in 2011. GC4 has become a reality and a successful model for sustainable, comprehensive cleft care in the developing world. Since hosting the first mission in Guwahati in 2009, Operation Smile India has provided life-‐changing operations to 4623 patients in Assam. “With continuous support from Operation Smile International and Operation Smile India, the Team at GC4 has focused on excellence and is providing world c!lass care to the most needy of patients. These patients have intense challenges to obtaining care, but once in Guwahati they become part of our family. We care for ! them with safety, quality, and love that heals them both physically and emotionally. There are significant challenges in the region, prompting us to partner with the DSW in Assam. This will allow us to jointly care for and provide resources to these extremely needy patients in very remote areas, utilizing the DSW’s specialized knowledge, systems, and 58,000 Anganwadi workers at the village levels. 2

Capacity Building at GC4 Central to success of this model of high volume, high quality care in Guwahati is a cleft center staffed primarily by local health care professionals and staff members. Starting with a core group of international specialists, we have transitioned to a team that is overwhelmingly Indian. The Team at GC4 currently has 68 members that contribute to care on a daily basis, and 91% are from India. Also, the leadership of nearly all aspects of GC4 Medical Care and Administration is now in the hands of these fantastic local professionals, who are providing excellence in care to the children of Assam.

Our team of Operation Smile Patient Counselors had a remarkable 2011! They are constantly traveling throughout rural Assam to identify, educate, and organize surgery for patients in extremely remote areas. Holidays at GC4

International nurse specialist Angela Mora led an army of patients, families, and nurses in making Christmas decorations from recycled products. These were placed throughout the Center and Ward and brought a festive atmosphere to GC4.

On December 17th, we had a river cruise and picnic for all Team members on the banks of the Bramaputra, and a great time was had by all. Holiday luncheons and gifts on December 22nd and 23rd closed out the year in style amongst close colleagues and friends inspired by a common mission.
