10th International Mission As we host our third international mission in the GC4 facility (and 10th in Guwahati overall), a great group of dedicated volunteers from India and abroad has joined our core team. This combined team has delivered a fantastic performance, expanding our care and providing countless additional avenues for training and education. The exchange between full time staff and visiting volunteers has been impressive, all working together to provide safe surgeries and beautiful results for our children. 1,000th Patient: The number of underserved children that receive quality long-term care is constantly increasing. The total number of children in Assam that have received surgeries by Operation Smile will soon surpass 4000, and the committed GC4 facility has ensured that this will continue towards a cleft free state. Next week, we will complete our 1,000th case at the new facility!

Staff: A core mission of this project is to create a center that provides true excellence in comprehensive cleft care, located in a region with intense need. Our Team is the heartbeat of this initiative, and works tirelessly to fulfill our ambitions. International specialists are working side by side with Indian counterparts to provide personal and patientcentered care, and our awesome administrative staff guides patients through the treatment process. We are continuously recruiting and training local providers and staff, to increase our capacity in order to achieve a fully sustainable system of care in the region. Education: Education and training are central to providing quality care and expanding our mission. Our staff has completed the first round of BLS, ACLS, and PALS training. Most of our staff (medical and nonmedical) is now trained in basic life support techniques, and 43% of all healthcare providers at our center now hold PALS accreditation.

Additionally, students and educators from India and abroad rotate through GC4 on a regular basis and bolster our community of learning.

Patient Counselor Program: 87% of the population of Assam resides in rural and isolated regions, prompting us develop our team of Operation Smile Patient Counselors. Selected from our most committed student volunteers, these young men and women are traveling throughout the state to increase our penetration into rural communities, helping patients break through the barriers to them obtaining treatment. This is vastly improving our ability to identify, educate, and organize surgery for our patients. Patient Follow Up Program: Our recently revamped follow-up campaign is demonstrating substantial increases in patients returning for evaluations and future treatments. September is not yet complete, and we have seen 333 patients so far.

4

Also exciting is our initial effort to take follow-up camps out into rural communities. On September 12th and 13th we completed our first district based follow up camp, where doctors and Patient Counselors examined 141 patients in Morigaon, who would not have otherwise received these evaluations. Our speech therapist initiated our district based therapy program, seeing 43 patients for vital education and teaching another 94 village-based Resource Teachers in basic techniques of therapy in order to provide ongoing care. Additional local follow up camps are being scheduled in October and November.

Division of Research and Outcomes:

Ut pulvinar elit et augue.

Our goal is to define and improve the quality of our own performance, and ultimately to contribute to the knowledge, standards, and practices of cleft care worldwide. Six recent research fellows from abroad have greatly pushed forward our data collection, and an Institutional Review Board has been created in India to oversee and guide our projects.
