St Mary’s Secret Garden Project Brief

Design Solution

The Project was located in Hackney, London. The Garden was run by charities and other nonprofit organisations. As the garden grew in popularity, more spaces are needed in order to provide projects including horticultural education, therapeutical sessions and other services for students and the community.

To allow the Garden to run more efficiently. I designed two sperate building to handle different service. The Garden shop would be located at north east end of the garden this allow shoppers to have an easy access from the main road, and also give visitors a good view into the garden, they could also see how the garden is operate and students could be prepare for their activities. The second building would be where most activities could be held, it allows students to enjoy preparing plants and other horticultural activities.

Room of it’s own Project Brief The Project was located at Old Kent Road, South East London. A historic Roman road which ran from Dover (South East England) to Holyhead (West Wales). The task was to find a place at Old Kent Road to build a room which able to accommodate your self and the room could not be larger than 25 square metres.

Design Solution I have chosen to build on top of a supermarket name ASDA, the reason been is because I felt the location is well located with plenty of shops around and a good transport links it also used up free spaces with in the city, which I think was a good idea at the time. As I started to develop my idea, I felt there was an opportunity to build a series of rooms similar to this room so others could enjoy the spaces on top of a supermarket. The other benefits of building in a higher density, is to increase its energy efficiency and use up the heat which escapes from the large roof top of the existing building. The material used for this room would be similar to the material used on the supermarket, which is a light weight steel structure with steel and glass panels. The reason for this approach is to keep the overall language of the existing building.

Women Refuge

Women Refuge Project Brief

Design Solution

This Project was also located at Old Kent Road, the brief was to build a women refuge for the community, it would be a short term home for those women who are in need of a shelter, or just wanted times away from home. This would be the place where women in the neighbourhood could gather and share their problems. be larger than 25 square metres.

The building is located next to a busy cross road, in order to reduce the effect of the noise pollution, the building is set further back of the site. The overall form of the building is designed to blend into the overall context, hence why the pitched roof.

Generic Urban Building

Generic Urban Building

The Manifesto- Generic building - The generic building will be specific to one address (though may need more than one front door). - The materials and construction of the facades are durable and lasting, as is required for a building that may live through several incarnations. - The building’s form, geometry and material shall acknowledge its relationship with all things that are affected by its presence, thereby informing

its character.

- It is a dense volume that may not be immediately apparent from a single vantage point, as there is no single dominating façade, rather several sides of equal importance. - Its shape will feel new yet strangely familiar, having something of the communal and the dwelling. - Windows are proportioned to provide light and view (their composition always acknowledging the city first) and it will not always be obvious how the interiors are occupied. - Whilst a theme of repetition and rhythm shall predominate externally, the internal structure will permit a range of ordinary and more special uses, several of which may occur concurrently. - The structural materials internally may be expressed or lined according to programme. - The distribution of circulatory movement will be at the same time rich and necessary. - The people who commission and those who inhabit the building are custodians for future generations

Location: Sugar house lane, Newham, London, United Kingdom

Project Brief

Site area: 128220 sq m

- The building must be able to used for both working and living. - The building must be capable to change its use from working to living without major change to structure and facade

Our site is located at Newham East London, it is very close to the 2012 Olympic Park. The site also has an excellent public transport link since the is in between Bromley by bow and Westham underground station. With the A11 (High Street) and A12 (Blackwall Tunnel Northern Approach)running North and west side of the site, it provided the site with great vehicle access connecting central London and Straford.

- The building must include a range of different sizes of dwelling space. - The building must have a public use. - The manifesto would be the foundation of the design process.

From the eighteenth century onwards, the site was mainly use for industry and we could still see find some evidence today, from the disuse warehouses along the riverside and those chimneys which was ones used by the factories in the area. The cobblestone and cast iron accents reminds us of the ones industrial past where goods was transported around the site.

OLD TOWN

GREEN WAY

This section drawing is to show the relationship of the site and its context. It compares the residential area inside the site and the newly build residential area outside the site, although most of the buildings in this section are all residential buildings, there are still a strong contracts in terms of building height and building mass with the majority of buildings in our site at 2 to 3 storeys high, this create a strong contrasts when you see on the other side of the Green way we see a 41 storeys high residential buildings reaching up to 139 meters.

I wanted to design a building which are long lasting and able to withstand against time. This is why concrete is chosen as the main material, the solidity of the material is to demonstrate its pleasant. The rhythm on the facade is define by the program inside, just like ripples on the river which is define by the movements around the water. Finally the interesting contrast between the building I designed in my site and the building outside the boundary line hopefully could be maintained, the contrast between old and new, little and tall, is the true fabric of how this little community works.

Design Solution In the design of the facade of the restaurant I have used only a few materials to highlight the interlocking building mass which was the key expect to the overall design of this restaurant.

Renders on the last two pages are render by P&T, all other works are draw and design by my self.
