PEOPLE OF

GUINEA

Waking up in the morning to the fast, loud and booming beats of an African drum band practicing next door was a gut wrenching sign that I was no longer in Canada or anywhere close to home. I had no way of knowing what the next two weeks were going to be like without my familiar comforts. Thankfully the Guineans of Conakry reminded me of something very important that the North American in me had taken for granted: being strongly connected with family and friends can get you through anything life throws at you. Making those connections was difficult for me a first without speaking any of their four major languages. But one way I could communicate was with my camera. I could share a moment and connect with people through the lens and that was enough to my make my trip an adventure. Despite living in what many North Americans would considere a crisis situation, everyone in Guinea managed to not just live life but find joy all around them. I found it amazing how little some of them had and yet how full of spirit they were. Thank you to all the loving, caring people of Guinea who made me feel welcomed and treated me like family. This is for you. alexdemanin@gmail.com www.demaninphotography.com www.instagram.com/alexdemanin
