The community center is not only a place for local citizens but can be an indoor attraction for visitors, an extreme necessity in the winter. The theater will attract many visitors from a large area with the absence of a local theater. The increased visitor population in the winter will increase the city’s local businesses’ available customer count in the winter and allow them to thrive during this time.
Also included in the community center is the theater. The theater is accessible to the local theater group, Twin Beach Players, as well as the local dance school, the Abigail Francisco School. When not in use by these organizations, the theater can double as a movie theater or a concert hall. The theater is not limited to functions that require tiered seating. The seating is retractable and can be stored, forming a large space that is allowed to spill outside onto the deck and patio. This allows the space to be used as a wedding and reception hall, and can hold many events such as a charity banquet, an art auction, or an aerobics class. The dynamicity of the space allows the city to collect revenue all year.
Due to the large distance from the city to its serving schools, students have difficulty accessing the resources needed to succeed in their classes. The library is a place for students to complete homework and obtain research materials for school projects. The library also serves the adults in the community as place to walk to in town instead of travelling to Chesapeake Beach for their library needs. This will help the city obtain green recognition by many available green city organizations. As a town with a large amount of aging citizens, the library will be a quiet location that they can gather and relax. Citizens will be able to hold book club meetings in the meeting room.
The North Beach Community Center is a dynamic building that serves as the central gathering place for the town’s public amenities. The building houses the city’s library and theater.

Flat roofs are green roofs as well as northern facing roofs. This minimalizes runoff and slows its process while filtering the rain water.. The theater patio is paved with permeable pavers that allow water to percolate into the ground and prevents runoff. In addition, the decking that wraps around the building as well as the theater deck allows the penetration of water, minimalizing runoff. solar shingles are located on all south facing roofs as well as all west and east facing roofs. a grey water system is implemented onto the site. this takes waste water from sinks, filters it and reuses it in toilet water. All toilets are dual flush toilets while all faucets are low flow faucets. Rapid water heaters are located under every sink to minimize travel time of hot water, thus minimalizing heat lost during water travel. In the lobby, the windows in the cupola are operable allowing hot air escape in the summer and hold it in in the winter. Similarly, the windows along the roofs of the library and the theater are operable to allow heat escape when needed.
Sustainability
The building is organized as a central circle with two rectangular spaces branching off from this structure. These spaces become the library and the theater while the circular space becomes the lobby serving both spaces. The library and the theater are expressed in the lobby by the protrusion into the space as well as the presence of the wooden panels on these protrusions. Circulation is located along the horizontal and vertical axes that penetrate the center of the circular lobby. In the library, the axis is terminated by a view towards the Chesapeake Bay. In the theater, the axis runs along a view to the Chesapeake Bay. Located along the diagonal axes are the visual axis towards the Chesapeake Bay and the diagonal wall that connects the circular mass to rectangular masses. It is essential to create many views to the Chesapeake Bay within the building because this is the essence of the town. Angled roofing weas chosen to continue the aesthetic of the town.
Architecture and Form
The structure of the building is heavy timber, reflecting the structural typology of beach towns where piers and buildings are raised on large wooden pylons. The central lobby is accentuated by the structure. The white concrete walls contrast against the structure further accentuating its dominance in the space and adding to the lobby’s importance in the building. The library and theater continue the heavy timber aesthetic but have a simpler structure. These spaces are clad in grey wooden panels. These panels reflect the aging wood that is common in beach towns. These panels allow the building to breathe and allowing it to regulate its temperature. The floor throughout the space is constructed from wood look tile. This allows the durability of porcelain tile with the aesthetics of wood flooring.
