ALEX FLORY CIDA Interior Designer

I am a graduate of the CIDA Accredited Interior Design Program at Kansas State University. This portfolio reflects what I have learned about the design process. There is range of projects that include steps of the design process such as predesign, programming, specifications and construction documents. Some of these projects do include brands that are used for educational purposes.

The project is to design the interior of the addition to the Reed School. The space is dedicated for four instructors and 50 students to participate in an integrated curriculum that combines humanities, art and science. The purpose of the addition is to redefine the typical high school curriculum and to prepare students for an interdisciplinary and immersive digital world. The addition is approximately 8,000 SF of a single story.

Concept Process The concept reflects the process of transformation. Transformation is a dramatic change in form or appearance. The process of transformation correlates between four key ideas which is space, technology, pedagogy and active learning. This design concept allows the Reed School to be flexible within a given setting. For example, the classrooms have moveable glass walls that will transform the space. By transforming the space, this will allow for students and teachers to collaborate between the interdisciplinary courses.

The project was to help develop a brand that sold sustainable furniture and materials in the Kansas City area. The purpose of the showroom was to promote and create unique furniture and materials collections to support customer’s awareness of global environmental issues. The client wanted to develop this showroom with recycled shipping containers as the main building structure. The building is approximately 8,000 SF across two stories.

Concept Process The concept reflects the idea of sustainability. Sustainability is a key idea that people are still learning how to adapt in there everyday lives. Modernization is defined as the process of adapting something to modern needs or habits. This idea is represented by a wheel. The wheel shows the relationship between the pillars of sustainability. When pulling apart the wheel, it shows how the pillars are conjoined. This idea shows the connection between sustainability and modernization which is represented by a zipper.

Kiosk Busan, South Korea Team Members: Alex Flory, Lauren Osborn & Jessica Russell AutoCAD . Photoshop . 3Ds Max

As a design team, we developed a retail kiosk for Samsung that could be deconstructed at the end of the business day. We worked in conjunction with the Interior Design students from Inje University from Busan, by gathering information about the site and the culture. The concept of Samsung kiosk is derived from the shapes in the work of Itami Jun, a Korean architect, and popular products sold by Samsung. The interconnected shapes of the structure represents the connection that Samsung provide its customers.

mKb Manhattan, Kansas Team Members: Kaylee Champagne, Alex Flory, & Elaine Macek Revit . AutoCAD . Photoshop

As a design team, we created a boutique restaurant and hotel in downtown Manhattan, Kansas. We were able to develop the brand and design the space and menu based on Manhattan clientele. Our design inspiration came from creating a more modern form of a traditional brewery. We also had to create a grand staircase that would represent our concept. The second portion of this project was to create a full set of construction documents as well as a furnishes, fixtures and equipment packet and budget sheet.

Concept Process The concept reflects the flowing wheat fields in Kansas. The design of the space is derived from an abstract and geometric section cut through a stem of wheat. This develops a spatial organization. Concept Process
