Letters from the Editors Hello Rebels! Tis the season—the season to fill our beautiful homes with colorful, bright lights, decorations, ornaments, and a load of delicious foods to serve on the table come Christmas Eve. Tis the season of giving—and our staff is here to give you a slew of interesting updates, articles, and news reports. Inside, you’ll be exposed to a new satirical column, where some of our most creative writer’s mission is to make you laugh, an exclusive interview with the producers of Project Happiness, a glance at two of the most famous capitals in Europe, and so much more. I hope you enjoy this issue as much as our staff has enjoyed putting it together. Stay safe this Christmas, drink lots of hot chocolate, catch up on your favorite holiday classics on ABC Family, and remember to always stay bizarre.

Hey! Welcome back to another issue of the Rebellion. As you may not know, putting together one issue of the Rebellion with its new format takes quite a bit of time. We are currently looking for graphic designers to help create advertisements, custom images, and page layouts. If you have experience in Adobe Photoshop or InDesign and are interested in working with us to create this amazing publication, please email me at alexhanns@gmail.com! We would love for you to be a part of the team.

Xoxo—yours truly,

Paulina Pachel , Co-Editor-In-Chief

‘Twas the Night Before an AP Student’s Christmas submitted by Mrs. Mundy ●●●

‘Twas the nocturnal segment of the diurnal period preceding the annual Yuletide celebration, and throughout our place of residence, kinetic activity was not in evidence among the possessors of this potential, including that species of domestic rodent known as Mus musculus. Hosiery was meticulously suspended from the forward edge of the wood burning caloric apparatus, pursuant to our anticipatory pleasure regarding an imminent visitation from an eccentric philanthropist among whose folkloric appellations is the honorific title of St. Nicholas. The prepubescent siblings, comfortably ensconced in their respective accommodations of repose, were experiencing subconscious visual hallucinations of variegated fruit confections moving rhythmically through their cerebrums. My conjugal partner and I, attired in our nocturnal head coverings, were about to take slumberous advantage of the hibernal darkness when upon the avenaceous exterior portion of the grounds there ascended such a cacophony of dissonance that I felt compelled to arise with alacrity from my place of repose for the purpose of ascertaining the precise source thereof. Hastening to the casement, I forthwith opened the barriers sealing this fenestration, noting thereupon that the lunar brilliance without, reflected as it was on the surface of a recent crystalline precipitation, might be said to rival that of the solar meridian itself - thus permitting my incredulous optical sensory organs to behold a miniature airborne runnered conveyance drawn by eight diminutive specimens of the genus Rangifer, piloted by a minuscule, aged chauffeur so ebullient and nimble that it became instantly apparent to me that he was indeed our anticipated caller.

With his ungulate motive power traveling at what may possibly have been more vertiginous velocity than patriotic alar predators, he vociferated loudly, expelled breath musically through contracted labia, and addressed each of the octet by his or her respective cognomen - “Now Dasher, now Dancer .” et al . - guiding them to the uppermost exterior level of our abode, through which structure I could readily distinguish the concatenations of each of the 32 cloven pedal extremities. As I retracted my cranium from its erstwhile location, and was performing a 180-degree pivot, our distinguished visitant achieved - with utmost celerity and via a downward leap - entry by way of the smoke passage. He was clad entirely in animal pelts soiled by the ebony residue from oxidations of carboniferous fuels which had accumulated on the walls thereof. His resemblance to a street vendor I attributed largely to the plethora of assorted playthings, which he bore dorsally in a commodious cloth receptacle. His orbs were scintillate with reflected luminosity, while his submaxillary dermal indentations gave every evidence of engaging amiability. The capillaries of his molar regions and nasal appurtenance were engorged with blood which suffused the subcutaneous layers, the former approximating the coloration of Albion’s floral emblem, the latter that of the Prunus avium, or sweet cherry. His amusing sub- and supralabials resembled nothing so much as a common loop knot, and their ambient hirsute facial adornment appeared like small, tabular and columnar crystals of frozen water. Clenched firmly between his incisors was a smoking piece whose gray fumes, forming a tenuous ellipse about his occiput,

were suggestive of a decorative seasonal circlet of holly. His visage was wider than it was high, and when he waxed audibly mirthful, his corpulent abdominal region undulated in the manner of impectinated fruit syrup in a hemispherical container. He was, in short, neither more nor less than an obese, jocund, multigenarian gnome, the optical perception of whom rendered me visibly frolicsome despite every effort to refrain from so being. By rapidly lowering and then elevating one eyelid and rotating his head slightly to one side, he indicated that trepidation on my part was groundless. Without utterance and with dispatch, he commenced filling the aforementioned appended hosiery with various of the aforementioned articles of merchandise extracted from his aforementioned previously dorsally transported cloth receptacle. Upon completion of this task, he executed an abrupt about- face, placed a single manual digit in lateral juxtaposition to his olfactory organ, inclined his cranium forward in a gesture of leave-taking, and forthwith effected his egress by renegotiating (in reverse) the smoke passage. He then propelled himself in a short vector onto his conveyance, directed a musical expulsion of air through his contracted oral sphincter to the antlered quadrupeds of burden, and proceeded to soar aloft in a movement hitherto observable chiefly among the seed-bearing portions of a common weed. But I overheard his parting exclamation, audible immediately prior to his vehiculation beyond the limits of visibility: “Ecstatic Yuletide to the planetary constituency, and to that self same assemblage, my sincerest wishes for a salubriously beneficial and ratifyingly pleasurable period between sunset and dawn.” 7

In remembrance…

The Ridgewood Rebellion would like to remember the students and teachers that were the victims of the Sandy Hook Shooting on December 14th in Newtown, Connecticut. Although practically everyone has heard about the shooting, either in the halls of Ridgewood, on Facebook, or on the News, this tragedy deserves a second, third, fourth, one hundred and twenty-seventh glance and moment of silence. Adam Lanza, whose name I write even though I fully believe that he should be erased from existence, dressed in black fatigues and a military vest and went to Sandy Hook Elementary with three guns after shooting and killing his mother. The school recently installed a new security system that required visitors to be buzzed in, so Lanza literally shot an entrance into the school. Victoria Soto, as many have most likely seen on one social-networking site or another, hid her students in closets and cupboards in a final, selfless act. She was killed along with six of her students. Mayor John Harkins of Soto’s hometown of Stratford, CT has proposed to rename the Honeyspot Elementary School in memory of her. It took police 20 minutes to arrive at the school, by which time 20 students and 6 faculty members were killed. Lanza killed himself as police approached, topping off the day’s death count at 28. “WHAT’S UP?” with Mr. Glogowski a look at the evening sky in Winter 2012

Hello Ridgewood!

Winter officially starts on December 21st-- the same day our

winter break starts. Winter is a great time to look up at the wonders of the night sky, the nights are long because the Sun sets early and the nights are usually crystal clear. The winter sky is dominated by the awesome constellation, Orion. In fact, Orion can be used as the starting point for your winter constellation observing.

To find Orion in early winter, look southeast. You will easily

find three stars that are lined up in a row. These are the stars in Orion’s belt. If you look to the lower right of the belt, you will come to a bright white star. This is Rigel which forms Orion’s knee. If you look to the upper left of the belt, you’ll find a bright orange star. This star is Betelgeuse, which some refer to as “Beetlejuice”. If you go out on December 21st around 7pm and look Southeast you will not only see Orion but also Jupiter hanging just above Orion and that very bright star in the upper right corner; is not a star at all—It’s the Moon! Congratulations! You’ve just done some winter star gazing!

Orion, the Hunter, is accompanied by two hunting dogs – Ca-

nis Major which includes Sirius (the Dog Star) and Canis Minor, which includes the star Procyon. Finding Sirius is easy. It is the brightest star in the winter night sky. Follow the line of Orion’s belt to the left. You

won’t miss it. Sirius makes up the head of Canis Major, the Great Dog. Directly above Sirius is Procyon. To find it using Orion, locate the two stars that make up Orion’s shoulders and follow the line they create to the first bright star you find. That is Procyon.

A great object to find are a grouping of stars called the Pleia-

des, or the Seven Sisters, follow Orion’s belt to the right. You will pass just below a bright star called Aldebaran and see a small group of stars which form the Pleiades.

Winter is a great time to observe the night sky so bundle up

and get out there! Keep looking up!

The Places to Go and the Things to Do in Madrid

Madrid, Spain is a city that always has something going on. Whether you want to go to the Renia Sofia Museum

of Art or to the Madrid River Park, you will have a great time. Also, you can have the authentic taste of Spain in Madrid with the great variety of restaurants. And if you want to have a lit bit of fun, you can go to the zoo! As you can see, there is a lot to do in Spain, and much more!

If you want to go to Madrid, there are some places that you cannot miss. You should go to Plaza Mayor, a square

in the old part of the city that is very pretty and that has events often. Also, you should go to the Almudena Cathedral that was constructed by the Pope John Paul in 1993 and that has works of art that are absolutely magnificent. Descalzas Reales Monastery is another place that you need to visit. It is a 16th century building where King Carlos I and Queen Isabel of Portugal lived.

There are also different things that you can go see, like the Russian Imperial Ballet, that was founded in 1994.

Or you can go to the Opera Macbeth, the most modern by Verdi in the Teatro Real. There is an exhibit that is called The Legacy of the House of Alba and that has a selection of 150 works to show.

Madrid has a lot more to offer, and I suggest that you go to Spain and experience them for yourself. The city is

alive with nightlife and food, museums and theaters, and art work and parks. With all of these different things to do and see, surely you would never be bored.

CREATIVE CORNER

DEFINE WEIRD... by Kristina Lazzara

One day while rocking out in my car, lost in the epic melo-

dies of the Doors and Led Zeppelin my sister turns to me and says “You listen to weird music.” Upon my upcoming witty rebuttal I start to think just what exactly is “weird?” Well, according to my good friend Webster the pocket edition it is defined as mysterious or bizarre.

I then began to look into and consider the history of my taste in

music. The classic rock genre dominated the music industry throughout the 60’s and 70’s. Back when bell- bottoms and shag carpeting were considered “classy.” Back then the music wasn’t thought to be unusual, bizarre, strange, or even slightly off. So why would it now? Can one thing gain the quality of being weird for no reason at all? And my answer to that is yes. Some things that were once thought to be, what the youngins call; hip, cool, and groovy have now become some puss ridden zit on the teenage face of society. Take mutton chops for example. Sure they were a respectful fashion, back in the Civil War, however, not so much now. Though they are few, people still sport these hairy, facial accessories.

So the lesson learned today is.. “Drum roll please!” POW! To

put it as cliché as possible, weirdness is in the eye of the beholder. Sure that guy jamming on his kazoo while walking his pet alpaca may look quite off. However, in that one citizen’s mind it is as normal as can be. So why not one day be a little weird; break out your old Go-go boots and petticoat for a while and see what it is like to be on the opposite end of this acceptance obsessed society. Break loose from the chains of normalcy. Just do something different for once! Be yourself, if being yourself happens to be “normal” then go right ahead. All biased thoughts aside, we can at least try and be a less judgmental society. It is by all means your choice. Just remember no matter how conformed and ordinary you come off being, there will be at least one inhabitant of this planet that will think you are the most bizarre person they’ve ever met. Except if you like anchovies, that’s just weird.
