like MACHINE, maybe two violins and one piano

Alex Huddleston 2015

Performance notes:

Possible eating arrangement

General: What happens in this piece is meant to be settings of some machine - within one setting, things keep going without changing. Because of this repetitiveness, and trying to keep clutter out of the score, instructions of dynamic, articulation, timbre are given once in the first time. These should be repeated the same until the next section. There are three main sections each with subsections indicated on the score

with a section bar line

The second violin needs a heavy rubber practice mute. while the mute is on, dynamics are in parenthesis. At some points there are bow placements specified. closer to the bridge should make it nasal, with harmonics closer to the fingerboard should make it hollow and woody

The piano has minor preparations: 15vb

Audience

The lowest B and C# should have alligator clips pinched on the strings. They should be placed so that there is both a low thump and a high harmonic pitch.

The piano is always notated with beams down = left hand beams up = right hand

Program Note: A machine with various settings. We do not know what it does but are fascinated by its mechanisms, its movements, its obscure logic absolute in its regidity. A minor miracle, if completely inconsequential, that this machine may yield some Aesthetic pleasure.
