AB OU T ME

I remember the walk through the forest path to my childhood getaway, “Sneaky Beach,” like I still walk through the pine and oak trees dripping with Spanish moss daily. My childhood butterfly gardens and frequent nature center visits taught me from an early age of the connection of my backyard landscape and the ecosystem surrounding me. After experiencing the aftermath of the BP oil spill while living in Florida, my passion to care and protect the environment around me grew exponentially. It was that passion that led me to the field of Landscape Architecture, which allows my creativity, problem solving skills, and passion for protecting the planet to cohesively work as one. I strive to value the natural landscape and work to restore the ecosystem around us, while being able to incorporate enjoyable and inspirational experiences within my design, so more people have the opportunity to connect to their surrounding landscape.

East Side Learning Commons Project Type: Education/Public Park Location: Athens, GA Client: East Side Public Library Project Duration: 3 weeks Programs Used: Photoshop, GIS, AutoCAD, Illustrator The East Side Learning Commons site is a multifunctional space that serves the East Athens community in numerous ways. From providing greenspace to providing educational opportunities, the site has the potential to make a lasting impact on the residents surrounding it. For the early education center, there is natural play equipment and teepees paired with a unique landscape to inspire playfulness and creativity throughout the site. There is an outdoor amphitheater and a connecting trail that uses plant species and topography to represent the upper piedmont into the rolling hills and riverbanks of the plains of Georgia. For library users of the site, there are two cafe seating areas: an upstairs overlook with a pergola and an area outside the library coffee shop connected to the terraced seat wall. For the youth in the area there is a basketball court, life sized chess, pavement marked games. For the community and library users alike, there is a community garden and a sensory garden to stroll through in the rear of the site. Transportation to and through the site includes a breezeway with a pickup and dropoff line for the school, parking in the front, and an additional lot in the rear.

Over the last two years, the pandemic has dramatically changed the public’s view of outdoor spaces, particularly in urban centers such as college square. This design was inspired by the movement of transforming streets and parking spaces into urban parklets for the public to enjoy. The design features are derived from the history of the site and of Athens, with elements of the north oconee river, railroad industry, and the native trees and wildlife that once inhabited the space. The riverlike bioswale through the center of the site collects and treats the stormwater that passes over the paving areas and provides visual interest to users on site. The stage on site consists of twelve units on wheels that can split apart into individual seating units when not being used for performances. The track that these units sit on are train tracks that tie into the history of the railroad industry in athens. The cafe seating is dispersed throughout the site to ensure optimal seating for users visiting one of the many eateries encompassing the square, as well as wide walkways for comfortable travel through the plaza. The north end of the site has an open area reserved for a service entrance that also doubles as a venue for farmers markets or other pop up events to take place. The once vehicular focused site, is now a prime space for pedestrians to walk freely throughout and use as their own urban oasis.

The Hive Community Project Type: Community Development Location: Athens, GA Project Duration: 6 Weeks Programs Used: Photoshop, AutoCAD, Sketchup, GIS, Illustrator The Hive community contains eight homes placed centrally on the site with access to the wide range of community amenities on the property. With the eight homes proposed there will be a balance of intimate and public spaces with opportunities for community engagement and socializing. The farm area, owned by each neighbor, is combined to increase the social interaction between the community as well as to maximize efficiency with the time and resources needed for its upkeep. The public spaces created provide a wide range of flexibility for the various neighborhood events taking place, from an outdoor concert to a fall festival with apple picking. Hosting large scale events with the community garden is a way to involve the outside area, generate revenue for the garden’s upkeep, and create a sense of pride in the upkeep of the community. The design of the homes and the public and private outdoor spaces provide connection to resources like the lake and garden to create harmony between the spaces with a consistent palette.

Rivers and Railroads Project Type: Urban Plaza Location: Athens, GA Client: Students of UGA Project Duration: 2 Weeks Programs Used: Photoshop, AutoCAD Athens, GA has been home to a wide variety of industries and subsequently the communities that form because of them. From the mill to the railroad to the music industry, the city has flowed through a variety of community phases. The site contains elements from these periods of time and brings them together to show the layers of history that have taken place here. There is a river-like form pergola with pebble seats below for students to gather around while enclosed by the mounds on site. The paving pattern is a radial pattern, similar to the spokes of a train wheel or a mill. The mound shapes on site are abstracted from the delta like patterns of water drainage existing on site. They have been exploded to move people through the site in the same way water has been draining through it. The site has two points of entry, one by the Tanner bus stop and the other by the Thomas Street Sculptural building to draw in foot traffic from students traveling through campus or waiting for the bus.

Halycyon: Modular Homes Project Type: Container Home Competition Client: UNYT Project Duration: 3 weekend long charrette Programs Used: Photoshop, Rhino, Illustrator, GIS, Lumion Modular homes can provide students with a balance of indoor and outdoor spaces. Pockets in the space are created by the Tetris style stacking of the containers and create interesting spaces and views to walk through on each floor. The first and third floors on site function as the bedroom and study spaces for individual students. Each student has access to a window with a view outside of their bedroom above their study area. The second floor on site includes the living room, kitchen, and bathroom for the students to use as a common area. This floor has direct access to the large patio extension outside of their container. This patio connects all the modules and provides a large area to host student gatherings or a place to hang out with a group of friends. There is a ramp along the interior of this space that provides ADA access to the second floor and creates a central focal point. The paving pattern used is a further continuation of the Tetris style blocking that the container configuration is based off of.

Walker County African American Cultural Center & Grounds Project Type: Museum Grounds Client: Walker County African American Historical Alumni Association Project Duration: 8 weeks Programs Used: Photoshop, Illustrator, GIS The project in Lafayette, GA is centered around the creation of the African American Cultural Center and Grounds being created by the African American Historical Alumni Society, who we met with during our community outreach. On site there are plant beds surrounding the site to buffer the surrounding parking lot. The progression of planting on site exemplifies moving from the valley to the mountains in Walker County through the use of native trees and shrubs. Visitors of all mobilities can enter the site through the front of the site and are moved through outdoor exhibits first before entering the building. The progress fountain on site, also sketched here, stems from ideas of growth, time, and overcoming hardship. The materials of the key features on site are drawn from the geology of Walker County, using stone such as granite, black shale, limestone, and sandstone taken from the region.

1. Way of the Rail LaFayette was home to an important stop for railroad companies, mostly to and from Chattanooga. Among these was the Central of Georgia Railway, which had a rail network throughout the state.

LaFayette’s position in the North Georgia mountains and plentiful access to water made it an adavanteous position for Native American tribes as well as early American settlers.

4. Hill City Elementary School c. 1940s Hill City Elementary is one of the first African American elementary schools in LaFayette, providing a valuable resource for the black community in the 19th and 20th centuries.

This LaFayette church is home to a multifarious age range of believers. Through Facebook records, we discovered numerous community events to spur outreach and interaction such as the Fishers of Men Fish Fry put on in summer of 2016.

Education was vital to early African American communities. The Dewberry School was 1 of 242 Rosenwald schools in Georgia.

8. A Rural Identity A city of only 7,107 people, the rural context of LaFayette is important to creating a tight-knit community.


Hill Street Residence Project Type: Residential Location: Athens, GA Project Duration: 4 Weeks Programs Used: Photoshop, AutoCAD, VRay This site is in the heart of Cobbham, Athens first suburb, and is full of historic sites, a variety of homes, and within walking distance to some of Athens’ most popular food havens. I designed a home for a client with a secondary dwelling attached to the back. There is a large open area for entertaining in the back. Two connecting patio areas define the outer edge of the main craftsman style home, complete with an outdoor grill area and hydrangeas lining the pathway. The front patio allows for a more secluded space from the secondary dwelling and is an ideal spot for the clients to enjoy some of their favorite pastimes: bird watching, drinking a morning cup of coffee, and reading on the porch. A variety of pollinator friendly florals line the property to provide a variety of colors and to attract birds, bees, and other species to liven up the garden for the resident’s viewing pleasure. The secondary dwelling, located over the three-car garage, has its own attached patio with a stone path through the woodland area to connect it to the rear lawn. The lawns on site provide the ideal space for entertaining and the round driveway allows for ample parking. Each residence gets their private outdoor area which provides the perfect balance of the private and open spaces.

Davis Residence Project Type: Residential Planting Location: Athens, GA Client: Mrs. Davis Project Duration: 6 weeks Programs Used: Autocad, Photoshop, Hand Rendered (markers) The Davis residence is in a large Athens neighborhood filled with a wide variety of plantings and a bad case of suburban deer grazing. A wide range of pollinator friendly florals for the façade and shade friendly plants for the wooded pathways were chosen to satisfy the clients wishes. The dense plantings at the front of the house will give the Davis’s the wild garden aesthetic they were hoping for while also providing an educational experience for the children as pollinators come to visit and peak the children’s curiosity. The back seating area provides a secluded and shaded space with a view to the front lawn, where the children play. The woodland path provides a shaded walk to the front yard as well as an area for the children to experience the various plantings or climb a tree as Ms. Davis is tending to the garden or relaxing. The site is a flexible space that is able to adapt when guests pass through an area all while providing visual interest with the diverse palette of colors and textures.
