As a passionate dedicated landscape designer, and a person of diverse interests. I have been learning and practicing landscape from 2004 both in China and Australia. After gaining Bachelor of Urban Environmental Design in Beijing University of Agriculture, I have worked in some of the best design companies in Beijing. Through observation and done massive drawings range from sketch, rendering and construction drawings about residential projects in China, I come to realise that landscape design is not only about copying and reproducing aesthetics, it should provide more opportunities for users to engage with the sites, and actually have abilities to solve current issues rather than re-construct beautifully. In 2013, I decided to do master degree in RMIT University, as it has reputable and distinct perspective in Landscape Architecture. In the two years of study, I have realised that landscape Architecture is about creating functionality, connectivity and sustainability that base on comprehensively understanding of multiple layers happening on the site and we need to rethink the potential that what landscape could be; how landscape operates in real social context. Learning never stops, I hope the boarder horizon that RMIT gave me and my previous working experience that will change the way I design and make me a unique designer as my career unfolds. The following samples I have selected from research project and practical projects that represent a range of types, scales and skills of design communications that demonstrate my abilities of participant in different projects. Both individual and team projects are included.

TEA CITY STUDIO This studio was to explore site condition through various mapping techniques and reflected in modeling. It required designing a productive landscape in Taipei city based around the analysis of the existing urban space, social context, soil type and other natural conditions.

Tee Growing Area

My project focused on tee production chain in Maokong Mountain and part of Taipei city. The approach worked in 3 stages: Ecology, production and recreation. The whole project is about setting up rules for production process. It includes rules for growing, harvesting, packaging and selling tee. With the redesigned production chain, recreation, education and community values will be introduced throughout the production process. I used sunlight analysis, slope condition analysis etc. to determine where the most suitable places to grow tee in the mountain are. Reasonable walking distance circles were allocated for the production chain nodes respectively. Harvesting route and educational practice are strict according to traditional harvesting behavior. The whole design content was reflected through connected pinned up lines, circled lines on a huge topography model in order to elaborate the outcome of the new production chain. The new designed chain explored vacant urban space for multipurpose usage and generates various values for local residents, and of cause, a better outcome of tee production. The studio helped me a new experience of using a range of techniques to explore design ideas. It also helped me to develop a design while understanding the natural, social and economic characteristics of site through mapping.

DESING THESIS CONCRETE SAVIOR

The urbanization of Beihai city in 1980's made environmental issue and social issues of farmers who lost their land and job in the city. Moreover, the real-estate bubble was collapsed resulting great amount of discarded land. Those issues have been impacting the city for last 3 decades. The project aims to reverse the descending by providing a feasible development mode for next decades. The research proposes integrated methods for urban and rural, environmental-friendly and social-friendly combination as a means to reconnecting the nature, city and people while reducing the ongoing tense issues of the city. The method suggests applying urban fabric onto a well organized site which has ecological infrastructure for the potential of preventing flooding and promoting urban agriculture. The site is divided into 3 parts, productive urban area, productive orchards and green aquaculture which also have the ability to differently remediate water respectively on the site. The new mode not only booming the economy and remediate natural environment, but gives the city a platform to upgrade the relationship between urban and rural area providing decent job, education, entertainment and living environment for the growing population of urbanization.

The urban form is generated by understanding how the natural landscape works. Through analyzing the topography of the site, a speculated runoff watershed was mapped out. Overlaying the topography to determine where the water catchment and potential farmland is located. A treatment system will combine these existing hydrologic systems. New buildings will keep adjacent to boi-swale which distributes to pocket wetland around the town. Pocket wetland will purify runoff water to irrigate proposed urban farmland. The forming of canals creates regional scale clusters that are defined by their different production and access to water. Clusters connect to the ecological infrastructure which will help to enhance the capability of decreasing flooding impact to the urban area.

Integrate topography and water treatment process into ecology infrastructure to explore land use potential of terrace zone. The flat zone is surround by the terrace zone makes rain water flowing faster through the site. The terrace divided into three type’s base on its slope ratio. The deeper gradient is good for sediment collection by constructed wall, and creates a buffer to slow the runoff speed. Medium slope is suitable to grow sugarcane due to its growing favor. Flat area is better to form shallow wetlands for the purpose of vegetation water treatment.

To convert abandon ponds close to the terrace, for the use of clean water collection ponds, and storm water management ponds when it’s flooding season. The central ponds will convert to eco tourism fishery. The clean water will supply the eco fish ponds. A continues production route is introduced to increase the accessibility and activities of the fish ponds, and also connect the production nodes of sink zone to the urban area production chain.

RESIDENTIAL DESIGN

VISION TIMES PROPERTY

This project has lasted 1 year long with couples of other project I have worked with, and is the first project that I played the main role of a landscape project. From design concept, liaising client to the end of the construction drawing, I have learned the way how to operate a real project and developed skills of planting design, detail drawing etc. The landscape conception derives from the traditional Beijingers' Hutong landscape. The Hutong ways of living has been far-reaching influencing on modern people’s living psychology. It is the main identification of this project from others around the area. The use of landscape hard materials are according to that of architecture of this project; however, the sense of the familiar living public space still gives residents various experiences. The combination of modern and classical culture in landscape design shapes the characteristic of this project.

PHOTOGRAPHY This photos project my landscape related skill that I learned when I devoted to landscape industry. I like travelling around and especially appreciate the landscape in every place. Photography is a good way for training me to pay attention to surrounding through special angles. It makes my perspective of view unique from others which also help me improving the sense of aesthetic, and I believe I can use it in landscape design.
