Flooding The Blue Valley
Due to the fact that the site is located on the former hill of a flooded valley, it only made sense to continue this artificial flooding from the lake into the site. Creating a bio swell out of the lower section of the site, then allowed the Yacht Club to become a bridge across the landscape. Along with this, the complex would also have greater control amid increasingly volatile lake levels, that tend to flood shallow areas of the site during rainy season.

Timber & Stone
A organized column and bean system allows for open air spaces without complex structural systems needed. Along with this, light and circulation are controlled through a layered approach. This consists of recessed entries and a layered facade featuring a thin wood clad and glass windows attached to timber beams. Materials in the site consist of timber and steel facade throughout.

Making a Connection
The purpose of this new stair is to provide a better connection with the building’s upper and lower level spaces, while also creating a stronger interaction with the outside streetscape. This is achieved through a mass that allows the functions of the stair, circulation, and entry points, to be concealed by thin panels of steel. With the stairs tucked away, the reading room can become an area of focus and quiet.

“The Frank Lloyd Wright of Kansas City”
Curtiss’ works helped shape the Kansas City we know today. His buildings consist of prairie, art nouveau, and southwestern styles. Often called the Frank Lloyd Wright of Kansas City, Curtiss was influential in helping deliver Kansas City its own unique style in the early 20th century during the city’s period of rapid growth. His influence is most notable with his work on the Country Club Plaza and The Boley Building, which claims itself to be one of the first curtain wall (glass facade) buildings in the United States.
