Fall 2018 3rd Year Studio To create a Yacht Club on Tuttle Creek Lake, a man-made body of water in a former valley, maintained by the U.S. Army Corps.

Blue Valley Yacht Club 6

Site Plan

7

Flooding The Blue Valley Due to the fact that the site is located on the former hill of a flooded valley, it only made sense to continue this artificial flooding from the lake into the site. Creating a bio swell out of the lower section of the site, then allowed the Yacht Club to become a bridge across the landscape. Along with this, the complex would also have greater control amid increasingly volatile lake levels, that tend to flood shallow areas of the site during rainy season.

Roof Plan & Site Plan

Timber and Stone An organized column and beam system allows for open air spaces without complex structural systems needed. Along with this, light and circulation are controlled through a layered approach. This consists of recessed entries and a layered facade featuring a thin wood clad and glass windows attached to timber beams. Materials in the site consist of timber and steel facade throughout.

Downtown Marquee Located in downtown Overland Park, this site is a blend of new and old development consisting of mid-size buildings that encourage bringing the suburban community together. It achieves this through forming spaces such as the local farmers market and community center. This dance center bisects these community spaces and is inspired by them to play a part in the growth of the community’s development.

Urban-Rural Studies Through these projects, the studio endeavoured to discover how the urban-rural interface could not only create a dynamic connection between communities at a local level, but how this could create an international interface where urban and rural communities can coexist. In conjunction with this, the studio produced a 355 page book documenting research, proposals and mid-year findings. In this process I was in charge of graphic standards which helped bring three groups of design teams together under a singular distinct style.
