L E AT H E R C O L L E C T I O N GLO S S A R Y

Aniline Dye

A transparent, water-based dye that is used to color the leather. The aniline is dyed all the way through the hide as to preserve all of the natural characteristics.

Blue or Wet-Blue

The raw material having been preserved in salts but not yet finished into leather.

Buffed Leather

Leather in which the surface top grain has been sanded down to reveal the nap.

Chrome Tannage

Process of preserving leather in chromium salts and turning them from raw material to leather. Also makes the leather very receptive to coloring and finishing.

Embossed Leather

Leather embossed with a pattern etched into either a plate or a cylinder.

Enhanced Grain

A leather whose surface has been buffed down to remove inconsistencies and then built back up with pigments, finishes, and embossments.

Finishing The final part of the leather making process where color, sheen, and protective agents are applied. Grain

The surface of the hide after the hair has been removed.

Hand-Painted

Artists treat the hide as a canvas before the finishing process to add color and movement.

Nude Leather Leathers such as the Arden collection which have been Aniline dyed but relatively untouched by chemicals. These are not protected against water or stains but have a very supple hand. Nubuck Full grain, aniline-dyed leather which has been buffed down to create a velvet-like surface. Patina

The natural luster of a leather begins to wear away and change beautifully with the passing of time.

Pigment

Semi-Aniline

Skiving

Coloration applied to the surface of the leather. Usually opaque and containing protective qualities as in Perth and Iona. Leather which has been aniline dyed but with a small amount of pigment to increase the durability and strength of color to the top grain. The process of thinning the leather to a much lighter weight.

Splitting The process of cutting the original hide into three layers. The top (grain) layer is what is found in this collection. The middle and bottom layers are used for suede or accessories. Tanning The process of turning raw material into useable leather for upholstery, apparel, accessories. Tipping The process of rolling out a contrasting layer of paint to the pebble grain texture of the leather. As seen in the Tempest collection. Vegetable Tanning The conversion of raw material to leather using tannins taken from plants or trees. The result is a firmer body than that of Chrome Tannage. 66

THINGS

TO

KNOW

Leather is a natural product and hides will vary in size and shape. Although Holland & Sherry sources only the best hides, small variations are a part of the inherent nature of the product. In order to convert COM to COL please remember that 1 yard of fabric at 54” = 18 square feet Cuttings for Approval are available when requested and ship within 2-3 business days. Please note that texture is not always consistent with the full hide as the CFA is taken from edge. Reserves are honored for a period of ten days. Actual square footage is always quoted with any blemishes larger than 1 cm in diameter removed from the hide size. Holland & Sherry recommends ordering 10% overage for any loss incurred at the workroom. The average size of the main cutting area is 65” W x 75” H. No allowances or claims will be allowed after ten days of receipt. Absolutely no allowances will be made for material that has been cut or altered. Absolutely no claims for labor. Returns are subject to a 25% restocking fee and must be returned in the original packing material and condition. The following leathers can be used for embossing: Arden, Braemar, Haven, and Inverness. The following leathers can be thinned (skiving) to an average of .3mm: Perth, Iona, Braemar, Inverness, Arden, and Haven. Lead time is 4-6 weeks and incurs a cost of $5.00 / square foot. 1/2 hides only.
