DESIGN BRIEF OVERVIEW
“…HALF OF THE WORLD'S NEW BUILDING CONSTRUCTION WILL TAKE PLACE IN CHINA BETWEEN NOW (2010) AND 2015… DRIVING A SIGNIFICANT PART OF THIS UNPRECEDENTED GROWTH IRONICALLY IS A SEGMENT OF THE POPULATION NOT OFFICIALLY RECOGNIZED AS RESIDENTS OF THE CITY ITSELF. RURAL MIGRANT WORKERS, ACCOUNTING FOR 17% OF SHANGHAI’S POPULATION, A FIGURE GROWING ANNUALLY… NOT SURPRISINGLY, THE ENORMITY OF THE MIGRANT POPULATION PUTS HUGE STRAINS ON INFRASTRUCTURE, RESOURCES AND EXACERBATES A WIDENING SOCIAL DIVIDE ROOTED IN DIALECT, EDUCATION AND WEALTH...
… INNER-CITY SLUMS ARE A MAJOR RECEPTOR OF NEW MIGRANTS KNOWN AS BRIDGEHEADERS WHO CONSIDER PROXIMITY TO EMPLOYMENT THEIR HIGHEST PRIORITY, EVEN AT THE EXPENSE OF QUALITY OF HOUSING. URBAN ENTERPRISES RECOGNIZING THIS OPPORTUNITY OPTED TO PROVIDE HOUSING FOR RURAL MIGRANTS TO LIVE IN. CURRENTLY, AN ESTIMATED TWO-THIRDS OF MIGRANTS LIVE ON THE CONSTRUCTION SITES THEY WORK ON.” STEPHEN ALTON, CONSTRUCTION WORKER HOUSING IN SHANGHAI INVESTIGATIONS OF URBAN MOBILITY, PART 1-2.
THIS PROJECT LOOKS TO ADDRESS THESE ISSUES AND PROVIDE A TEMPORARY SETTLEMENT FOR THE MIGRANT CONSTRUCTION WORKER.

SOCIAL FABRIC RESEARCH
HUTONGS:
ARE THE ALLEYWAYS RUNNING THROUGH THE HOUSING. THE COMMUNITY USE THE HUTONG AS THEIR MAIN SOCIAL SPACE. THE LIVING IS DONE OUT DOORS IN THE HUTONG WHERE MOST ACTIVITIES ARE TAKEN PLACE. RESIDENCE LOUNGE IN THE STREETS NOT INSIDE THERE HOMES.
HUKOU:
EACH TOWN AND CITY ISSUED ITS OWN DOMESTIC PASSPORT OR HUKOU, WHICH GAVE RESIDENTS ACCESS TO SOCIAL WELFARE SERVICES IN THAT JURISDICTION. INTRODUCED BY THE COMMUNIST GOVERNMENT IN 1958 AND WAS DESIGNED TO FACILITATE THREE MAIN PROGRAMS: GOVERNMENT WELFARE AND RESOURCE DISTRIBUTION, INTERNAL MIGRATION CONTROL, AND CRIMINAL SURVEILLANCE.
PAGE 2
FAMILY LIFE & COMMUNICATION:
DUE TO THE HUKOU CHILDREN CAN BE SEPARATED FROM THEIR PARENTS FOR YEARS ON END DUE TO THIS. LACKING A FORM OF COMMUNICATION TO REACH THEIR FAMILY’S ALSO LEADS TO A GREATER SENSE OF DISTANCE.
HEALTH CARE:
FOR MIGRANT FAMILIES ON A LOW INCOME, THE COST OF SEEING A DOCTOR IN CHINA’S COMMERCIALIZED HEALTH CARE SYSTEM CAN BE EXCESSIVELY EXPENSIVE.
MENTAL HEALTH:
LONG TERM SEPARATION FROM THEIR FAMILY CAN LEAD TO MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES. THE LIVING CONDITIONS ON SITE CAN ALSO LEAD TO THE WORKERS LOOSING A SENSE OF BELONGING.
EDUCATION:
CHILDREN THAT DO COME TO THE CITY ARE VERY RESTRICTED OR UNABLE TO ATTEND SCHOOLING DUE TO THE HUKOU. EDUCATION CAN ALSO BECOME VERY EXPENSE WITH A LACK GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE.

LAYERS OF USE IN HUTONGS:
THE PRIVATE SPACES (FIGURE) ARE THE MOST DOMINATE, BUT HOLD THE LEAST USE AND MINIMAL TIME IS SPENT IN THEM. PRIVATE SPACE COMMUNAL SPACE
THE HOUSING NOW TAKES ON THE SKINNY FORM OF THE HUTONG, AND THE COMMUNAL SPACE NOW BECOMES MORE OPEN, AND CREATES POSSIBILITIES FOR LARGER SCALE ACTIVITIES

ACTIVITIES AND SPACES
CONNECTION:
THE ACTIVITIES THAT THE WORKERS UNDERTAKE, HELP SHAPE THE TYPES OF SPACE THAT WILL BE SUITED TO THE SETTLEMENT. THE SOCIAL ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN CAN BE LOOKED AT AS FORMS OF CREATING CONNECTION. TO FAMILY, TO THE SURROUNDINGS, AND TO EACH OTHER. THESE THEMES OF CONNECTION DEFINED THE TYPES OF SPACES THAT CAN CREATE A SENSE OF COMMUNITY WITHIN THE SETTLEMENT.

SETTLEMENT TEMPORALITY STAGE 3 - 75% CAPACITY 1:500
SETTLEMENT TEMPORALITY STAGE 4 - 100% CAPACITY 1:500
THE SETTLEMENT BOUNDARIES ARE PUSHED TO THE EDGES OF THE SITE WITH THE HUTONG MEETING THEM. WITH A LARGER NUMBER OF OCCUPANTS AND OPEN SPACE AT GROUND LEVEL ALMOST FILLED, A SMALL SPORTING FIELD IS LAYERED ON TOP OF A BLOCK OF LEISURE UNITS TO PROVIDES SPACE FOR ACTIVITIES.
WITH HIGH NUMBERS OF WORKERS NEEDED DURING THE FITTING OUT STAGES OF THE BUILD, THE RESIDENTIAL STRING IS DEVELOPED TO BE DOUBLE SIDED TO ACCOMMODATE THE INFLUX IN WORKERS.
