LORNE NIGHTINGALE
Masters Thesis -
Individual Project loading bay
The Community Hospital is a vital employer of the town of Lorne. Currently, only three 3 of 97 staff live & work in the area leaving the remainder to travel for work & give patients their care. By developing upon the under-utilised car park of their current site, a Nightingale model has been envisioned to cater for the hospital staff & community key service workers in a coastal setting. Consolidation of assets and building on owned land reduces immediate costs. By prioritizing key service workers and agreeing on employee subsidies, the target industries greatly benefit in affordability. The ground floor plan provides access to the rear of the block along a large causeway. At the central common zone there is a screened outdoor setting, beach shower facilities, a swap and share activity store, and a large common green for residents and guests. Detail at the pedestrian scale capitalizes on the warm material palate. Sugar gum timber integrates with larger structural members to provide a seamless transition as a visual collective whilst the textured masonry provides weight and gravity. External detail continues the vertical integration of the heavy class 1 timbers with finer installments of meshed flora trellises. Powder coated steel paired with glazing reflects, and delicately breaks, the internal / external transition.

Individual Project
The structural parti for the Exhibition St tower is built upon the notion of shedding vertical load as the requirement for structure decreases. This produces a pure relationship with the overall form by disregarding unnecessary ornamental additions in replacement of tectonic strategies. 1. Core Decreasing in intervals along each typology strata of the tower, the in situ core begins at 600mm at it’s base and returns to 250mm at the capping of services in the crown area. As the necessity for lifts drop the tower respectively leans in to accommodate for the loss of structure giving the tower its distinctive form.

2. Column Framing Mega columns constructed of WC members and encased in concrete are located at equal spacing along each elevation. At intermediate spaces, secondary columns continue the structure along the grid spacing. These are of similar construction to the mega columns however are smaller in nature. Intersections of these columns with the remaining structure rely on bolted connections to disperse vertical and lateral loads.

3. Typical Beams Typical floor support is through a designed network of steel beams spaced efficiently to cater for each span. Spans on the eastern and western facades are standardised throughout the building however spans along the north and south vary as the form reacts to the structure. These beams vary from floor to floor and cross larger distances requiring them to be greater sizes and accurately cut for installation.

4. Outriggers and Lateral Load Wind loads are greatly reduced as the northern facade leans away from the prevailing annual winds. This in addition with the slenderness of the tower means that it is greatly suited to the context. Belt trusses and a fixed outrigger system accommodate further lateral loads at all mechanical levels. These are tied to central points along the structural grid with the outriggers being consistently placed within the vertical axis.

5. Crown Cage As the crown is constructed of a lightweight polycarbonate sheeting with no pressurisation requirements the structure consists of a simple bolted and welded steel framing system that is adequate to fix the panels in place. The frame also carries the BMU and access walks for the building. This is largely taken through a central column that is then aligned to the vertical structure of the core.

Following the success of the Kathmandu Playboy Disco I was contracted to redesign a hotel bar in Chitwan - near the Indian border. The initial concept emphasised the open and tropical location of the site. Native timbers and bright, glossy materials create a light and playful pallette, suitable for diurnal and nocturnal uses. The feedback from the client was that he preffered a more grunge, pop, international style for the lounge though maintaining the proposed layout. Materials and arrangements were then altered to suit a reflective, loud, and poppy composition. Verticality is enhanced through the projection of the lit structure and finer brass elements. The function space is in full contrast with heavy, massed, and textured surface finishes with large projecting back lit blades concentric to the heart of the hotel complex. GSEducationalVersion

LIGHTING UP THE GASWORKS
3rd Year Design -
Individual Project
Tasked with strict constraints of built volume and budget requirements the task was to develop a social housing development within Brisbane’s inner north. A parti was developed by overlaying site opportunities and constraints across a concentric pattern. This then created the ability to explore uses for niche pockets within the structural grid that provided the community with facilities throughout. Safety for residents was one of the key aspects considering the traditional demographic for social housing schemes. The design centres on an open series of networks and ‘eddies’ to encourage community interaction and ensure passive surveillance throughout the complex. Rotated aluminium screening on the facade ensures privacy within each unit. Communal areas are located on each level for occupants. They include services to assist in daily activity such as wi-fi, outdoor spaces, entertainment areas, and a BBQ.
This project provided a fortunate experience to visit both Brisbane and Melbourne social housing projects as well as lectures by their various designers and operating staff. The criteria provided an opportunity to align both a realistic budget and the need to address the immediate urban context on a social level.

PRESERVING THE HMAS DIAMANTINA
3rd Year Design -
Individual Project
Drawing inspiration from the organic forms of reef coral, the proposed Maritime Museum was designed to be a cultural bookend to Brisbane’s Southbank precinct. The brief proposed a mid-sized complex with the ability to host flexible exhibitions while providing shelter to all existing exhibits. A monumental scale was required in order to wrap and preserve the exposed HMAS Diamantina and extend the existing displays across an adjacent scrapyard. This form is projected through two hollowed elements that converge at the entrance and drape the site from end to end. The visitors are directed through a series of varying spaces that display the nautical wealth of Australia. At the halfway point patrons have the opportunity to explore the seasonal exhibits and relax on the landscaped riverside park. The final stage takes the visitors through the HMAS Diamantina as well as through the depths of the heritage dry dock that it resides in.
This project provided the challenge of combining separate digital programs into a single output. Once refined, the ‘shell’ and involved structure were constructed in Rhinoceros and Grasshopper before being combined with the site survey in Sketchup and finally into the internal plans in Revit. There were many challenges in combining such large and complex files, however, it was certainly a valuable exercise in learning an array of digital design program outputs.

The proposed design consisted of a convex, terracotta screening system on the eastern and western facades and a pre-cast, tartan brise soleil at the northern end. Through analysing horizontal elements and solar activity the two resulting facade systems allowed seasonal access or blocking of solar heat without any physical manipulation of the facade (see bottom right figures of summer and winter solstices at 12pm). A full documentation package was required of the building including both sectionals and plan details.

DESIGN STATEMENT The design of the gymnasium is made up of a kit of parts of robust and simple elements used to express an industrial style of building. The primary structural elements that hold up the building also become aesthetic components creating a deliberate rhythm and scale within the building. The cladding elements reveal this underlying primary steel skeleton as well as secondary framing elements by being of a translucent nature, and having large openable windows to the outside. When the openings are closed, the building feels like a lightweight framed container that allows silhouettes of activities to appear. When open, the large, variable scale openings on all levels reveal the uses and allow visual connection to the pool and playing grounds beyond. At night time, the building glows on all faces and becomes a lantern-like feature in the grounds of the Clem Jones Centre. The openess of the spaces have been carefully considered to create spaces that connect well with each other, as well as allowing natural breezes to flow throughout the whole building, negating the requirement for air conditioning. The central atrium is the common circulation space that allows vertical and horizontal connection within the building. It features a double height space with peripheral corridor areas and featured landscape and meeting room pods on the ground floor. This space is also the lung of the building as it allows each wing to have cross ventilation through the ventilation louvres high in the ceiling expelling the rising warm air from internal spaces.
GYYMNASIUM FOR CLEM JONES
Post Graduation -
ML Design
Designed to replace the existing Clem Jones Gym Centre, this project promotes an industrial aesthetic with a combination of unique design features that define how future buildings in the complex may be created. The underlying steel skeleton of the building has been left exposed to create a unique interior feel to the space. It also includes internal landscaped gardens and meeting pods to extend the functionality of the building. Wrapped in a translucent cladding, the envelope of the building almost completely opens up to allow a visual connection to the pool and playing grounds beyond as well as serve as a beacon of motion at night. The openness of the space has been carefully considered to create a cohesive design that is well-connected and well ventilated. The design allows for natural breezes to flow throughout the whole building. The central double-height atrium acts as the lungs: encouraging cross ventilation and expelling warm air through the ventilation louvers high in the ceiling.
I completed all DA documentation under the design lead’s supervision. It was a unique introduction into professional work that allowed me to be wholly involved from concept design and client consultation, to just recently beginning construction documentation.

The cinema form came about through the manipulation and play of scale in order to form a hierarchy of feature panels, lighting, and attractions. The facade materials are kept simple to keep emphasise on the undulating volumes so that these become the dominant form whilst the existing cinema complex was kept as a background element. The new cinema boxes are highlighted as a signature element to be viewed both from within the site and beyond. Expressed coloured lightweight panels are articulated with vertical lighting components to break the larger massing components and hint at the entertainment within.

Design was completed by studio leads. All architectural modeling and documentation provided to the client were completed by myself. I was able to provide initiative in structure, details, and materiality. The most valuable exercise involved in delivering of this project was maintaining a flexible modeling system whilst working with a constantly evolving master plan. Car parking numbers and internal facility space were consistently shifting to allow for staging and lot boundary alterations within the overall development plan.

Over the course of 2016 I have been assisting the team from marketing and basement plans to joinery details across the build. It has been an enriching project as coming into the later stages the environmental and opulent subtleties of the design were revealed through details I have been working with and through.

472 apartments catered across two 30 storey towers provide Brisbane with the refined design initiatives that are required in it’s sub-tropical climate. Placing an emphasis on local, tropical flora, the towers ensure a fresh and open design for all residents. Reinforcing climate sensitive techniques is an attempt to stand apart from the over-glazed product that has been creeping into the Queensland capital.

I was also heavily involved in interior joinery documentation and CAD file management. All custom joinery units as well five flexible room options, common area, and roof deck elements were documented through Archicad.

My role was in the delivery of town planning documentation with screen studies on the most suitable design for overlooking. This was done through 3D modeling scenario exercises that satisfied planning by proving limited view, despite a more permeable outcome.

The Brighton 6-pack emphasised light and space by infusing the local, ocean side context with high-end detailing. Large, open-plan living with selected flexible room options produced a product that catered for the needs of a range of individual down-sizers.

RURAL COLLECTION
Post Graduation -
Jost Architects
This project was based on the extension and upgrade of a typical, rural shed to house a vintage car collection, agricultural service equipment, and a self-contained residence. Doubling the floor area and including large, operable screening provided a space that was adaptable as it was securable.
My role was in the documentation of the existing shed and property as well as model the extension for town planning submission. This was a particularly interesting challenge - modeling all structural work parallel to the engineered plans of the 20yr old building. This project was also used for a rendering styling exercise in an attempt to take the firm’s marketing to a higher level.

Following the workshop there have been countless design revisions and consultation sessions that have refined and maximised yield for the master plan. Running alongside the urban development team I have been able to assist in site and built form modeling, client consultation, and marketing exercises. Remaining with the project allowed me to experience the natural evolution and design input that has resulted in the most current and final edition of the project (bottom right image).

ML Design
Located on the 200ha former Paper Mill site, ML Design worked in close partnership with Moreton Bay Regional Council and the University of the Sunshine Coast to develop the Concept Plan for the new University Precinct at Petrie. Anchored by the University of the Sunshine Coast, MBRC’s Vision for the site was to create a destination that attracts students, residents and visitors who enjoy globally recognised and multi-award winning educational and community facilities that embrace its natural environmental surrounds. The scheme carrys through from this proposal and incorporates the development of several residential precincts as well as mixeduse, sporting, and ecological opportunities. Another planning project that I have been fortunate enough to work alongside, it has been an enriching experience to follow and understand the processes in which the master plan has developed. In modeling and drafting the scheme as it evolves I have been mentored in the decision making and justification of each alteration.
BARE DISEÑO
All furniture designed and built by AM
Bare Diseño is small-scale side project influenced by minimalist, Chilean furniture. All pieces are designed within tight principles of scale and proportion - manipulating steel and pine into a modest composition. I initially undertook the works in order to further develop an understanding of detail and construction at a more intimate scale.
Péndulo - display shelf built in square proportions disected with three plains
Eje - coffee table with concealed fixings and a non-intersecting support frame
Alto - bar stool designed within specific ergonomic proportions
MISTR
Refillable cologne vessel
Over the course of 18 months myself and two friends produced a product that resulted in a humbly refined outcome to an enormously positive market reaction. The cologne vessel design is based from the dimensions of a standard credit card, tapering from 1-7mm with a capacity of 9ml (80 sprays) and entirely refillable. I undertook all design, graphics, and consultation with manufacturers whilst my two partners focused on business and administrative roles. themistr.com

BOWER STUDIO
During the first half of 2017 I was involved with a team from the University of Melbourne that designed and built a community media centre for a remote aboriginal town in the Northern Territory.
The media centre housed projection facilities as well as safely secure all archival information in a cyclone proof shelter. An integrated urban space connects the zone whilst also providing foundation for services. It was an incredible experience working alongside a community that were so open to sharing culture and experience.
OUTDOORS After being in Melbourne for just over a year I’ve found the best way to get to know the region is to go out and experience it. Between work and university commitments I try to squeeze in as much camping and adventures as possible. It has been a great way to meet new people and see a side of the country I had never had the opportunity to until now.
PHOTOGRAPHY I was fortunate enough to travel through South America at the end of 2016 and purchased my first camera along the way. It certainly opened my eyes to details I would have previously overlooked in the attempts to capture the richness of the places I was able to see. It made for a much more intimate experience with the palate of built environment and landscape around. These are selected photos from the trip.
