The proposed building neatly sits in the leafy, low-rise street that consists mainly of single residential dwellings presenting typically as single storey semi detached houses with a number of them having two storey rear extensions. The design intent is simple in using a locally identifiable material of face brickwork at street level as a solid base and which is visually apparent to both adjoining properties. The upper level form is of lightweight structure and lined with a profiled cladding which references the detail of the constrating material applied to the gables found above the brick bases of the majority of the dwellings along the street. The forms are further articulated to create entries at the ground floor, secluded private open space to the rear, and to apply the consistent upper level setback found to the properties to the south. Finally, the built form to the front of the existing properties is replicated while the upper levels have adopted a roof profile with a similar pitch used on the existing dwelling as well as the original areas of the adjoining properties. It is a contemporary design that integrates itself neatly into the fabric of it's surrounds without trying to loose its identity.

By extruding the silhouette of the traditional Victorian cottage for the length of the sloping block, the architects created a split-level home that meets all of the owners' needs while still feeling at home in its surroundings. The other benefit is this silhouette fits within the required boundary setbacks to maintain light and air to the neighbours." - FIGR

HAROLD STREET RESIDENCE - JCB THE FORM SCULPTURED TO FURTHER RESPOND THE COMMON PITCHED ROOF FORM FOUND ALONG THE STREETSCAPE WITH A SUBTLE COLOUR CHANGES TO DENOTE THE INDIVIDUAL DWELLINGS.

PHOTO BY TOM BLACHFORD "The resulting residence engages with the site’s predominantly single storey Victorian terrace context, through its form and detailing, while exploring the public/private nature of the corner site. The pressed red brickwork and sweeping roof form pick up and reinterpret elements of the surrounding built fabric. The brickwork is further articulated by a section of honeycomb brickwork and steel grid screening, providing a perforated layer between street and the internal spaces." - JCB
