01 A three week project that I completed while studying abroad at French Design Instution, ENSCI - Les Ateliers. The objective was to consider opportunities in repurposing the components of an empty water bottle, restoring value and purpose. The focus of this project was sustainability

In my design process I used plastic-form studies in parallel with traditional sketching to enhance quick understanding through ideation. I determined that modern wrist watches can be fabricated from the plastic caps and transparent walls of a water bottle.

DETAIL REFINEMENT Numerous iterations were made using flat-wall plastic bottles and an industrial laser cutter. I experimented with different patterns and fastening techniques for watch band. Found: Post cut bands yielded enhanced durability. Best fastening method: interlacing bands

02 During this six month project, I explored the redesign of a common househeld powertool. In the redesign my focus was in creating a power tool for the novice Do-It-Yourself user. Design a new generation nail gun for the DIY user

Through market research, user anlysis, two and t h r e e dimensional ideation and weekly design reviews from peers and professors, my design developed.

I determined that a power tool can be; less intimidating, more intuitive and iconic by design.

Kathryn is a self employed urban resident and new business owner of her retail thrift store in downtown Pasadena. As a recent college graduate, she is renovating her new store with the help of friends and family members to save money.

This is Kathryn’s first DIY project. She wants a set of tools that look nice, feel comfortable and are within her budget.

PURPOSE The Diamant Pneumatic nail gun is designed for the hobbyist approaching DIY projects. The modern aesthetic encourages its user to store the nailer in the open, creating a positive connection to a product intended for do-it-yourself tasks.

03 Many tools are purposed for extened use and can quickly become uncomfortable. This issue can detract from task efficiency and enjoyment.

Study of ergonomics applied to the soldering iron

For more accurate insight, I worked with an avid solderer, Leroy, familiar with the uses of a soldering iron and how it can be improved for his hobby with model trains. Interviewing the user and understanding the tasks associated with soldering, my design process began.

MARKET RESEARCH Soldering irons on the market cater to a wide range of users with the exception of model train hobbyists. There is opportunity for an ergonomic home based Soldering iron.


INTERVIEW LEROY age 53 model train enthusiast San Diego, California Leroy uses a single tip linear iron. Its narrow diameter causes discomfort in precise and lengthy operations. His corded iron makes repairs around the track more challenging. Intricate soldering tasks are difficult to see when the iron casts a shadow on the part he is working with. 028

I explored many forms of existing soldering irons and selected the ones which addressed the concerns of my persona. Moving from ideation to inital concepts, constant user-testing and feedback were necessary. Through sketching and making mock ups, words such as; function, comfort and efficiency were kept in mind.

04 A three week project that I completed while studying abroad at French Design Instution, ENSCI - Les Ateliers. The objective was to learn from the efficiency of nature and reproduce its engineering to capture and store energy. Study of biomimicry applied to the collection of energy.

I decided to approach this project with the idea of personal energy collection for a user on the go.

I envision this product suited for campers and urban dwellers to collect energy for powering small electronics.

THE CONCEPT I decided to design a portable turbine storable in the base of an average sized backpack. I designed the turbine with intent to explore backpack integration during future semesters.

EXPLORE AND REFINE After exploring forms of the base and wind collectors, I discovered that less material is best. This allows for easy storage and less added weight to a backpack.

06 A semester project themed around softgoods product knowledge; from designing it to sewing it. The course objective was to design a product which encourages a healthier lifestyle for families with children. Design a softgood promoting healthy living for familiies

In initial stages of design process I worked in a team of four designers to collect research and interview young families within the Bay Area. Asking about “family routines“ and understanding areas for improving family engagement, my design process began.

PROBLEM Information collected from www.cdc.gov shares statistics of children’s eating habits in grades K-12, from the United States. How can healthier eating habits be encouraged through family and peer-to-peer interaction; making the idea of packing lunch, “cool” for young students ?

MARKET RESEARCH Comparing existing lunch boxes, most are generic with little room for pre-customization. There is market opportunity for mid-priced and customizable lunch boxes for children.

Through sketching, I explored solutions encouraging kids to pack their lunch and not leave it behind. My ideation led to the concept of treating your lunch box like a pet; from picking it out, to taking care of it, there should be an emotional connection.

07 The objective of this project was to design a flat-packing piece of furniture which fastens together without additional hardware. All furniture components were to be cut from a single piece of 2.5’ x 5’ Plywood. The focus of this project was in woodwork and joinery

In my design process I used foam core mock ups to study interlocking forms and their ability to be cut from a single sheet of material.

10 For this foundation project I designed a soap bar, fit for every contour of the body. In my design I included two colinear draft angles, allowing a two part mold to be made from it. The project focus was to learn and use draft angles.

I e n j o y t h e t h r i l l o f traveling, beauty of automotive design and any opportunity I have to give back to my commmunities. A whole is the sum of its parts and these are a few of the things that make me, me.

When I am not in the studio, you will likely find me photographing new sights, visiting design exhibits or trying different foods I have yet to taste. In all, I remain inspired by the world around me and my ability to positively impact its future, through design.
