Local Cultural Elements

Yilan, a city on the east coast of Taiwan, has many farm ďŹ elds. Agriculture used to be one of the main industries in Taiwan before the 60’s; however, it is still considered an important sector in Yilan Taiwan. For instance, farming, beekeeping, etc. This explains why we still can see many beautiful landscapes in Yilan nowadays because the locals still strive to maintain and respect the land of their own. Besides having beautiful landscapes or some concrete specialty, I want to express their spirit of agriculture.

Concept

The only bee museum in Taiwan is in Yilan called“Bee Farmer”.The local residents take resource from bees properly rather just exploiting them and nature. They get along with bees, the land, and nature respectfully, which reflects their attitude towards farm. The spirit of finding a balance to live with animals and nature respectfully is a treasure which needs to be inherited.

“Hive Fun”is like a big honeycomb which can be used for children to sit on. There are 6 magnets between the two layers that are used for attaching the layers. The construction is rigid, and there are two ways to pile the layers up ‒ with or without space between them. Users can customize the height and the piling-way. When children grow up, they can change the height of the stool, which is just like“building a Hive”and symbolizes that the stool grows up with the child.

There is some space for store, and kids can play with the little bee dolls ─“Bee Ball”made of socks and cotton who lives in “Hive Fun”, which has “hive” image. The shape with holes also has the affordance to indicate children to put those ball toys back. (Photos by Cultural Affairs Bureau Yilan County)

Originally I planned to bend the plywood to make the curvature of each layer between the seat part and the legs. But a carpenter who is professional in furniture suggested that it need make mold, which spends a lot of money and would be better if this is mass production. So ďŹ nally we use CNC to make the shape, but even that, we still discussed and tested many times because of its thickness. The thickness should be enough thick to be strong to support weight of users. After CNC, we used grinder to make radius by hand, and sprayed paint on each part, and set magnets on each layer.

Phase 01 HIWIN’s corporate values

constantly seeks breakthroughs, strategizing capability, proactive in leadership, high attention to details, capacity for generosity, empathy, approachable character in order to help its partners to success.

Story Creation

SCID team transforms these sentimental elements from the stories and values of those interviwees into a meaningful story that represents HIWIN’s values .

Roles who represent the same values as HIWIN’s

SCID team searched for some individuals of various roles who represent values that overlap with HIWIN’s core values.

Phase 02 1. Main Character Attributes

Capturing the first impression. SCID team accumulated a large quantity of concepts exploring all potential directions to aid e ec-tive categorization of designs. Directions for further development were then chosen through team discussion.

2. Design Details & Execution All details including character’s mission, require actions and emotional expression etc. 3D CAD is used to have the most accurate representation of design concepts, including surface and material quality, inter-action possibilities andmechanical details.

Deciding the three themes Based on the previous three proposed themes, the team accumu-lated various existing characters and classiďŹ ed them according to the attributes that they represent. This helps to form a clearer picture of the kind of character our target should resonate with, and allows the team to form the three proposal themes for the design of the character.

Proposal 1 The Flying Bot Playful, energetic, let technology take you to the future! Inspired by aircraft jet engines, the proportion of the character is round and tetonic, giving it a humble yet energetic characteristic. Its ying capability signiďŹ es its courage for challenges and break throughs.

Magni cantly adorable, energetically humble

Its simple round silhouette tries to create a proportion of timeless design. The industrial elements signi es playful yet humble and practical characteristic of The Flying Bot

Proposal 2 The Hero Presenter Mysterious warrior and its in uencial technology

The mysterious warriors in Chinese classic novels are often not to be underestimated for both their strength and skills. However the most signi cant attribute of these warriors are what they represent in the ancient society - a bench mark for many to follow.

Firm leadership and setting the bar for the industry

The Hero Presenter borrows classic elements from ancient warriors with contemperory design treatment to express the leadership role of HIWIN in the industry worldwide.

Proposal 3 Courageous Companion Upgrade of the quality of life through technology Every craft is a martial art. The Courageous Companion never shys from any challenge and always on your side when in need. Through caring, he helps you in your life endeavors, and co-exist harmoniously with its approachable aesthetics.

Modularity in design, no compromise in professionality

The Courageous Companion’s core proposition is in its modularity design that allows it to perform any task with absolute professionalism as needed by its human users. This concept emphasizes the focus that the goal of technology is not about replacement the roles of humans, but to help them achieve better quality of life. Therefore the types of missions that have been chosen for The Courageous Partner are assistant in nature, such as safety guide in schools, reghters, disaster rescuers, hospital guides etc.

Final Desicion :

Courageous Companion Final Design Direction

HIWIN team decided to move on with“The Courageous Companion”as the final design direction on April 15th 2016. SCID team provided a second revision of the design on April 19th as the final conformation of design.

Phase 3 Turning Design Concept into Reality

The exterior design as well as motion of The Courageous Bot was decided in Phase 02. Integration and realization is the main goal in Phase 03. These details include body shell parting design and assembly methods, interior structural design, integration of robotic arm while designing assembly tolerance into the structure, facial expression design and method of display, over all base, how it houses the controllers while considering the over all model’s transportation requirements. SCID team also worked to provide the nalized color, material and nish proposal. During this process, all of the details endured rounds of revisions, while SCID HIWIN and San Yuan Advance Technology worked together intensively to nalize and integrate all components of the design to make sure that the design complies with the requirements of the prototyping process.

Balanced dieting is an important habit for health, especially for elderly and those who have chronic diseases. To maintain balanced dieting, two key points related to cook must be considered, the choice of ingredients and the amount of seasoning. Food is classiďŹ ed to 6 types: Grain products, Fruits, Vegetables, Dairy products, Meats and Protein, Fats, and Oils and Sugars. Through weight Conversion to nutrition unit, we can get the information about our diet situation.

Design Opportunity

What should children learn? Most parents in Asia hope they are good at studying; however, something related to our life seem to be more important.

Children usually absorb knowledge from different aspects through their strong curiosity. Every object in our life in different countries has their own background and story. When seeing those concrete things, it might trigger curiosity of children to ask more questions behind those objects.

Therefore, I try to combine those features about education of children: culture communication, knowledge and stories and backgrounds behind different cultures, and curiosity of children to find some design opportunities to help children improve their social ability.

How to Share the

Objects with other children

Through taking pictures of objects at hand to share with other children from different countries, they also can see different things shared by other kids in different cultures. Children even might talk with each other about their own stories behind the objects, which improves their story telling ability. Since pad has camera, I Aplanned to design am APP about this concept, instead of any hardware.

About NetDragon

Established in 1999 and headquartered in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, China, is the world’s leading creator of online community. NetDragon is a prominent developer, operator and publisher of online games in China, and also the first Chinese game company that successfully expanded into overseas markets.

101 Pad for Student

The world’s first K12 education tablet. By integrating open educational cloud platform and worldwide educational resources, the Company developed“101 Smart Classroom” which provides overall intelligent teaching and learning solutions exclusive for K12 education, and“101 Education PPT”for more convenient planning and teaching of lessons.

Our Mission

The intern-students had to design the adaptor and stylus for the 101 Pad. Considering that the Pad is for education and the students, we had to add some elements to those accessories.

Stakeholders Analysis

We categorized students and teachers as ďŹ rst stakeholders, and parents of students as the secondary.

Target User

Students and teachers are our target users. After that, we did the two personas, including their personalities, hobbits, any detail about them.

Competitive Product

We categorized the products on market as dierent features, such as with stylus with microphone, light sensor and so on.

Scenario

Function Define

Based on the scenario, we could find some problem or design opportunities the users might face. And according to those points, we tried to figure out the functions for the products.

According to the main target users- students we had set before, we thought about their daily journey from morning when they wake up to the end of a day and fabricated the scenario.

Idea Sketch

Before the sketch phrase, we did brain storming with other groups, to choose the main functions from last step. We did sketch steps and discussed with supervisors and colleagues many times until we had some good and practical ideas.

The Plight of Holemess

About 70% of the homeless do drudges in Taiwan, but stereotyping is so negative that many homeless have experienced verbal and physical bulling; Because of those label, people don’t accommodate them easily, which makes them have fewer employment opportunities than others.

Personal

Society Our direction:

reverse people’s view to

homeless

A main problem of the homeless issue is discriminatory labeling which potentially leads to both physical and mental harm to the homeless. To improve this situation, we hope to spread goodwill and raise social awareness, through the symbol we designed to represent the idea of“friendliness to the homeless”. Through making these symbols become a creative compound which welcomes any institution or anyone to use, it makes the spread more easily.

Signs from Social Issues

Some People who are more empathic choose to remain silent because they don't have ways to express their support to homeless. Some issues in the past such as LGBT and No Nukes have their own sign to expand and promote efficiently. Therefore, our first step is to design a symbol to spread“homeless Friendly”.

No Nukes

Homeless Friendly

Symbol Building and Development

Homeless often lack some respects and even basic human right. They might be repelled by water when sleeping on the street because they affect cityscape, be attacked by people just because people don’t like them, be exploited by employers because they have no choice. Therefore, we hope the sign we designed also can express what they need concretely. Therefore, we specified the sign with four core concepts and be represented by 4 colors.

Empathy

Say no to bullying

Put you in their shoes instead of simply being sympathetic

Do not treat the homeless wirh verbal and physical violence

Treat the homeless equally

Let the homeless use public space

Same work, same wage

Friendly space

Homeless Friendly

Ultimately we hope this symbol become Creative Commons license for everyone to use, spread and copy.

How to extend it ?

After the symbol was finished, at first we tried to introduce it and extend the Homeless Friendly ideal symbolized by this sign through the event including parade and exhibition. And then, we hoped this sign can have a root to be connected to some place, as if any sing has their own history and start line. We finally collaborated with a tavern located in Dadaocheng.

There are many important events happening in taverns in history, such as Stonewall riots in Stonewall tavern about homosexial movement, Taiwan labor movement in Penglai Ge. Like those history event, We cooperate with “Le Zin 洛”tavern, located at Tua-Tiu-Tiann. Through selling beer named “City Habitant Beer ”to extend homeless Friendly goodwill. In addition, the tavern will donor 10% of the incomes from this beer to Homeless Taiwan Organization. We also made some coasters for the Beer which can be used by consumers.

Workshop Designing an Encyclopedia of Unique Objects

Creative Design 2016

Boisbuchet Workshop Katharina Mischer Thomas Traxle Designer:

Mao Jun Ren Amy Tseng

Elisservet Geece Cristina Lara

AH. Padierna

Georcic Eiienne Through practical assignments and experiments, Katharina and Thomas contucted us to define and translate, make, test and explore. Directions to consider varied from logic and meaningful solutions to poetic and lively proposals up to amusing absurdity. At the end of the week we had a collection of products, furniture, objects or even installations that form a surprising three-dimensional‘encyclopedia’of unique things.

Domaine de Boisbuchet

Located in the south of France countryside, a unique, o-the-wall design destination established a non-proďŹ t center for design education. Those architectures, artwork left by designers and natural environment there inspires people to create and design. Boisbuchet is a manor and famous for its design and architecture workshops, exhibitions and events.

Mischer’Traxler

Found by Katharina Mischer(1982) and Thomas Traxle(1981) and based in Vienna they develop and design products, furniture, installations and more, with a focus on experiments, context and conceptual thinking. Balancing between handcraft and technology, they envision whole systems, processes and new production methods that indicate sustainability and the relevance of nature.

Inspiration

Our tutors Katharina and Thomas gave us 26 words whose prefixes are from A to Z to define and create objects for their meanings:

We defined them according to their pronunciation, meanings, imagination or such. It sounds not be very logical, because pronunciations in different countries are different. But sometimes it was related to semantics, since people might have the same feeling to some kinds of pronunciation or such. Anyway, it doesn’t need to be very strict; it’s just a way to help us to find some ideas to create.

Material Test

We could use all of the material in the workshop such as paper, clothes, leather, cable, wood, bamboo and so on. We even could use food or any material there as possible as we could figure out. The most interesting and exciting is that sometimes we had to use some material to substitute for those which we couldn’t find there. Since there was no gypsum, we used paper tissues to do the molds of the people’s noses.

Process

Those 26 words from different languages were as follows:

Anopisthograph, Bolus, Chanticleer, Diazingiber, Effluvium, Facula, Gnomon, Hibernacle, Isalloba, Jirble, Krobylos, Labarum, Monoculus, Nychtemeron, Octiron、Pyroleter, Quaterviois, Rhinarium, Scandiscope, Thaumatrope, Umtagati, Vellicle、 Winklepicker, Xylopyrography, Ysel, Ziraleet. After discussing with Katharine, I used the thorns from plants I captured in the garden and leather to make the“Isalloba”(upper left in left page), which has aggressive pronunciation to trigger us to make a weapon for it.

Presentation & Exhibition

Every team conducted by dierent designers had to present the works in the last day. After the discussion, we decided to hold a special exhibition. It was also like an auction. As if those objects were precious artworks in museum, all of us wore pairs of gloves to take our objects one by one after our host read the introduction about them.

Follow up

Cultural Communication

We lived and worked together for seven days, it was very interesting to observe and understand people from dierent countries, our life habits, our opinions, our backgrounds and so on. Sometime it might be hard to communicate with others because of language, culture, but it is really a good opportunity to leave comfort zone, and widen my view. I even made a good friend from Mexico in Boisbuchet and traveled together after the workshop.

Edible Tale

Edible Tale

Little Red Riding Hood Once upon a time, there was a little girl. Her grandmother gave her a red riding hood, and the girl loves it so much she wears it all the time. So everybody started to call her Little Red Riding Hood. One day mother told the girl her grandmother fell ill. Because she lived alone deep in the wood, she would probably be happy to get some food.
