ALEX WOMACK photographic explorations

The journey within this book is a personal story of self discovery. Before I began capturing this collection of photographs I was very cynical about the photographic medium. I never saw photos amounting to anything other than commercial or purely artistic work. I admit now that was a completely wrong assumption to make. When I began taking these photos I had no idea how to observe or what to make of them. It took three months of collecting them until I could start to build any sort of narrative. During this process I was keeping in mind the idea of typology or comparing two or more photos from different times and locations. The photographic works of Hilla and Bernd Becher as well as works of Jeff Brouws had a little influence on this work. Looking at groupings of objects, people and architecture has a sort of forensic quality to it and attaches a broader message to the work. Though I enjoy the idea of a narrative entirely based upon comparison I could not let go of the subtleties of the life around me here in Kansas. Whether I was

around friends or out by myself driving around it felt important to capture certain moments of that to hold onto so I could enjoy them indefinitely. This is a collection of photographic work that I am proud to say I captured and arranged. This project taught me a lot about what photography means to me. There are hidden depths about yourself that you discover when you choose to save certain things in life and discard others. This work would not have been as spontanious had I preconcieved any book orientation before collecting them. It was better this way and allowed me to collect all my thoughts about the individual photographs. No longer do I view photography with such cynicism. This process has taught me to look deeply into other photographers work and see what they want me to see and seek out the messages behind that work. Photographers have various destinct styles and things they have learned about the world around them. I hope you enjoy my first photographic explorations.
