Mastre thesis -summer semester 2019-20

Site:

Nadrazi Holeshovice metro, Prague

Studio:

Jaroslav Wertig and Jakub Kopecky

Project introduction:

Knowledge Incubator is a mixed program project combining Project – Based Learning high school and Research Centre. The site is part of an approved master plan for Bubny-Zatory district. The thesis seeks for a creation of a “high school for the future” that gives importance to personal interest and aspiration of the students and make them part of the community. At the same time, due to the underuse of the school and cultural facilities in the city, the topic of maximizing space usage and creating flexible yet personalized spaces is explored. The design concept of the building was based on the creation of a library integrated into the main circulation of the building, uniting a diverse multilevel program and providing a space for communication between different users.

The educational hub Semester:

Summer semester 2018 - bachelor diploma

Site:

Ortenovo Square, Prague

Studio:

Jaroslav Wertig and David Neuhausl

Brief:

To design a structure whose main functions are providing educational opportunities and being a safe place for the self-development of young people between 10 and 23 years old and providing public space for the neighborhood.

Project introduction:

The educational center has 4 main interconnected programs: “research cluster” with library, reading rooms and study booths; “discussion hub“ with forum, lecture rooms, community theater and youth center; “production hub” with laboratories, workshops and studios for different fields; and sports center with facilities for different physical activities (swimming pool, gym, dancing/yoga/martial arts studios, basketball, etc). Whole project is disabled-accessible. On the exterior the project is following urban grid and creates an additional face to the square, while the courtyards consisting of terraces, stairs and bridges createsphysical and visual connection between the 4 programs/ spheres and provides active and diverse public space for the neighborhood. 9

Semester:

Winter semester 2018-19

Site:

Pohorelec Square, Prague

Studio:

Jaroslav Wertig and Jakub Kopecky

Brief:

To design a building which will be on a plot bounded by 3 streets and a grammar school, and to consider in the project current changing space requirements and building a relationship with the surroundings.

Project introduction:

It is a co-living mixed-function project focused on creating a community for the young generation. 5 different privacy levels vary from fully public zones to the ones accessible only for residents. Each person would have a bedroom with private bathroom and would share the kitchen and living room with a small group of others. The complex has 16 such communities/clusters, which are connected with outside corridors / “streets“ which also work as functional communicative spaces, where people can chat, play, dance or do barbecue. Below the residential clusters 6 common spaces are located: library, grow room, dining hall, gym, DIY studio and coworking. The non-orthogonal shape and placement of the clusters / residential blocks creates a feeling of the city within the city and its centralized multileveled circulation takes people on the journey, encouraging them to meet and interact.

Footprints of the Silent Past Semester:

Winter semester 2019-20

Site:

Lety Memorial Site

Studio:

Jaroslav Wertig and Jakub Kopecky

Brief:

To design a memorial for the Roma people who passed through Lety concetration camp.

Project introduction:

As the camp was burned and its traces were erased, the main concept of the project is to bring back its existence to the visitor through series of experiences connected to what the Roma population experienced at the time. By leaving the outside physical condition of the site untouched and going underground in the footprints of the camp the memorial highlights the fact that the truth was hidden for such a long time. In other words, creating scars in the ground, which would stay as a permanent reminder of what has been done to the Roma people. The project consists of several parts, each of which carries a different function and relates to the different experiences which prisoners went through in the camp.

1. Trenches filled with raw granite rocks in the footprints of the prisoners’ jails, which represent the congestion in which prisoners lived in; 2. Two exhibition halls filled with artificial fog under the former barracks, which represent the loss of identity and disconnection which prisoners went through in Lety;

3. Ceremonial space in the footprint of the biggest barrack with prisoners names on the walls and paths in the directions of Hodonin, Auschwitz and Lety mass graveyard. 4. Contemplation space to mourn those who died in the camp from typhoid and violence.

Site:

Curators:

Brief:

The goal of the project was to create a pavilion in the discarded space in an airport, to create an attraction for people waiting for check in, as well as to solve such problems as – a unequal distribution of light and peoples’ circulation.

Project introduction:

20

The research part of the project was based on analyses of the Mimosa Pudica plant and the methods in which we can use natural technologies to solve site problems. We applied our discoveries of the plants’ nature as an inspiration for component creation [2] and cluster behavior. [1,3] The whole pavilion works like mirrored labyrinth, which activates when people come to it and it directs them to different “pockets of destination“ to help them change their perception of the space and to get new experiences while waiting for their flight.
