Top Songs of the Week includes The Weekend, Lady Gaga, and Twenty One Pilots Sometimes, one of the best things to get you through the week is some new music. Luckily for us, some of the hottest artists of the year have released new music this week. This week’s best new songs include music from The Weeknd, Lady Gaga, and Twenty One Pilots. Abel Tesfaye, otherwise known as The Weeknd, returned recently with his debut of new song “Starboy.” “Starboy” features the musical stylings of Daft Punk with the Weeknd’s vocals in an enticing and unique collaboration on this track. Shortly after the release of the single, The Weeknd released a music video for the song, starring himself as he tears apart a house and destroys past versions of himself, singing “Switch up my style, I take any lane / I switch up my cup, I kill any pain.” “Starboy” proves yet again that Tesfaye is able to quickly top the charts and alter his style in an appealing way, making this track one of the top songs of the week.
Current queen of pop, Lady Gaga returns in anticipation of her new album Joanne with top song of the week, “Perfect Illusion.” For her fifth studio album, Lady Gaga takes on a newer, more country sound as opposed to her electric pop past. As opposed to putting on a grand pop theme with dance anthems upon dance anthems, Gaga tones it down with a sound that crosses labels and genres, giving listeners a side of her music not brought to light before. This track’s collaboration with Tame Impala frontman Kevin Parker marks a catchy pop-rock anthem that will outlast time, just as Gaga has done before. It has been more than a year since genre-bending duo Twenty One Pilots released their most recent album Blurryface, but that does not stop fans and music lovers from constantly pushing the band’s songs back up on the charts. Their song “Ride” is a testament to the duo’s genre bending musical style, combining alternative rock with an almost reggae-style beat, making it difficult to not buy into this catchy track. Frontman Tyler Joseph sings “I just want to stay in the
sun where I find / I know it’s hard sometimes / pieces of peace in the sun’s peace of mind,” lyrics that are emotional yet relatable on a deeper level not heard on the surface level of the song, making “Ride” a top song of the week once again. The top songs of the week prove once again that pop music is in a state of true variation, and no two pop songs are exactly the same. Why not relish in the awesome state that pop music is in today?
