ANNIVERSARY YEAR ANNIVERSARY
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to a special edition of our flagship magazine Academia,
celebrating the 15th year anniversary of Alfaisal University! As one of the founding members of this
university, it has been truly remarkable to be a part of this story for the past decade and a half. I have witnessed how countless ideas and dreams become realities, how collaborations and partnerships equip our faculty and student with research opportunities and industry insights, watched 12
graduating cohorts unlock their potential and cross over into their future full of promise, empowered by the guidance, skills and opportunities provided by this institution.
Reflecting on the original mission laid out for the university in its early days compared to where we
are today, it is notable how we've stayed committed to our goal- building national and international relationships that cultivate opportunities, expertise and cutting-edge research and therefore developing our students into being the leaders of tomorrow.
Having achieved. so much as a young university we continue to move forward with high ambitions.
Universities are major drivers of social change. Through our commitment and impact, we hope to contribute towards realizing Vision 2030, in contributing to a knowledge-based economy, just like the dreams of our past are the reality of today.
Our students are the future of this great nation, and we continue to ensure that we remain a future example of where education is headed in Saudi Arabia.

This year, the focus has been to discover ways for universities to bridge current or future skill gaps and facilitate the shift towards a sustainable, knowledge-based economy using new educationalmodels such as micro-credentialing and lifelong learning. Our Vice President of External Relations & Advancement HRH Dr. Maha bint Mishari Al Saud was invited to share her expertise at the summit. In a panel discussion titled “Leadership Reflections: How can we successfully bridge the gap between policy, institutions and industry?”, she shared the stage with key policymakers and pioneers in the MENA higher-education sector. She highlighted cross-sector collaborations, using unique case studies from Alfaisal to illustrate how they provide greater opportunities. Alfaisal University has been able to integrate sustainable development values in their curriculum, research, operations and community outreach due to our relationships with our Cofounders and Board of Trustees. Going forward, eminence in research shall be an integral tool for Alfaisal: to keep pace with the fourth industrial revolution, to support the achievement of Vision 2030 and to become a model institution in the region. The panel concluded with an emphasis on how a transformational approach can offer long-term resilience and flexibility while helping institutions emerge from challenges on a firmer footing. Alfaisal University Enrichment Programs Alfaisal University Enrichment Programs (AUEP) are a set of dynamic courses that target high school students and aim to bridge the gap between secondary and undergraduate education in terms of skills and knowledge. AUEP started in January 2020, and the program delivers fundamental knowledge in a challenging and interactive manner. The AUEP’s most recent achievement was conducting seven enrichment programs in the summer of 2022 across different fields, including medicine, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, finance, the stock market, gaming, project management, research methodology, English education, and others. More than 270 students enrolled in different programs, with more than 50 students joining Alfaisal University as freshmen/UPP students. In the summer of 2022, AUEP students across different programs worked on final projects that aligned with their course content to utilize their skills and present the newly learned knowledge to their friends and families. Their work included scientific posters, creative films, product prototypes, and live demonstrations.
Leading the Way in Healthcare Simulation Education in Saudi Arabia
14
Alfaisal University College of Medicine has developed an international partnership with the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions (MGH IHP) with the launch of its master’s degree in Health Professions Education Simulation track. MGH IHP faculty will teach in person at the Riyadh campus. The program is the first of its kind in the region and promises to expand health professions simulation education in the Middle East.
Led by Dr. Janice Palaganas, the department’s associate chair, the Institute will offer its Master of Health Professions Education (MS-HPEd) in Simulation at Alfaisal University. While current students in the HPEd master’s (and doctoral) programs take classes online, students in the MGH IHP Alfaisal program will attend the courses on campus to meet the region’s preference of providing in-person education. “Our partnership fits the needs of the region in that exclusive online programs are not recognized,” said Palaganas. “Although this in-person requirement is not unique to Middle Eastern countries, we are happy that we can meet the needs of those who work in these cultures.” According to Dr. Khaled Al-Kattan, Dean of Alfaisal College of Medicine, the partnership will go a long way towards the university’s goals of being the region’s leader in the field. "The agreement with the MGH Institute enables better access for improving health professions simulation education faculty in the Middle East,” he said. “It is aligned with Alfaisal mission of leadership to advance the skills of educators in the region." Palaganas has developed connections with Alfaisal and other Middle Eastern universities over the past several years, thanks to having given several keynotes and guest lectures at simulation conferences. An expert on simulation education – in addition to her work at the IHP, she also maintains her position as a faculty member at the Center for Medical Simulation – she recognized a growing need to provide faculty in the region with the skills to improve healthcare education.

The new program’s students will be integrated into the part-time, two-year program with other international and U.S.- based students. They will choose between two tracks within the MS-HPEd: Simulation-Based Education (SBE) to improve their teaching skills in healthcare simulation and Simulation Operations for administrators, directors, and technical specialists looking to acquire skills in simulation program administration, leadership, and management of simulation technologies to support simulation-based education. “They wanted to import the best of our teaching modalities and scholarship into the Middle East,” said Dr. Roger Edwards, Chair of the MGH Institute’s Department of Health Professions Education. “Improved training of health professions education faculty will have domino effects on the educational outcomes of students across the health professions.” Edwards noted that the focus on simulationbased education enables a wide spectrum of tools to be more effectively deployed. MGH IHP faculty will teach the program’s courses on campus, including Dr. Janice Palaganas as well as Dr. Cynthia Mosher, Assistant Director in the Department of Clinical Skills Simulation Center at Alfaisal. This spring Dr. Mosher became one of the first four graduates of the Institute’s Ph.D. in Health Professions Education program. She also holds a Master of Science in Healthcare Simulation. “There are a lot of simulation efforts and amazing simulationists in the Middle East,” said Palaganas. “I'm excited to support and further the region's growth in healthcare simulation knowledge.”

Alfaisal University Sends Medical Volunteers to Hajj 1443 AH
1443 AH
1 million pilgrims
20
The pilgrimage of Hajj is one of the largest annual mass gathering events on Earth. This year, 1443 AH, a total of 1 million pilgrims performed Hajj, making it one of the most ethnically, demographically, and clinically diverse assemblies once again. Every year, an increasing number of Hajj volunteers sign up to serve the pilgrims, offering their services at key landmarks of the pilgrimage.
The Saudi Vision 2030 aspires to encourage a culture of volunteering, especially among students. Community service gives medical students a chance to better understand the community, practice their clinical skills and solve problems. Through service to humanity, old clinical interests are confirmed, and new passions are identified. Communication, teamwork, and time management skills are cultivated, which are essential for these future healthcare professionals. This year, for the first time, Alfaisal medical students had the honor of participating in the Hajj volunteering program. our university has a diverse student body from more than 44 countries. The initiative was the brainchild of Dr. Haroon Ahmed Javaid, a current medical intern at the university. Under the supervision of Dr. Dana Bakheet and the comradery of a team of hardworking members, the Alfaisal Hajj Initiative was born. A collaboration with Umm Al-Qura University (UQU) was paramount to the success of this initiative. A total of 14 Alfaisal medical students from Year 5 and internship year participated as volunteers. With the travel expenses covered by Alfaisal University and the food/accommodation taken care of by Umm AlQura University, the volunteers were well cared for. The volunteers were posted at Mashaer hospitals and on the field. Volunteers at hospitals were responsible for assessing and stabilizing patients. They also assisted in procedures and documented clinical notes. As for the volunteers on the field, they were tasked with assessing vital signs, performing emergency resuscitative procedures, and educating the pilgrims about hand hygiene and other healthy habits. This program comes as part of Alfaisal’s social responsibility towards the community and an opportunity to foster fruitful collaborations between academic institutes and other governmental entities dedicated to the service of the “Guests of the Merciful”.

For the Students, By the Students
The Medical Students' Association (MSA) is a student-led, volunteer-based organization at the Alfaisal College of Medicine. Its motto is: for the students, by the students. They are committed to improving academics, offering opportunities, and arranging social activities to improve the lives of Alfaisal University's medical students. Nine teams of 600 students work together to create the MSA we know today. These groups encompass all elements of a student's academic and extracurricular life.
Growth & Development aims to give students chances to improve their connections with doctors and help them withstand the hard lifestyle of medical school. GnD is best known for its popular Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) Program. This student-led initiative assists students struggling with challenging lectures across all subjects, and it exemplifies MSA's motto. GnD is well-known for its highly anticipated talks, such as the Hot Seat.
The MSA's foreign relations are overseen and managed by the International Office. Throughout the year, they look for attractive research initiatives for our students to assist them in residency programs.
Green Team's mission is to inspire the medical community to raise awareness about climate change and global warming and to take longterm action to address these challenges. Climate change is an environmental concern and a threat to human health. The Green Team is instrumental in making Alfaisal University a greener place.
Electives are another duty that IO secures. By contacting programs at over 50 hospitals in the United States, students may apply to a diverse range of institutions and acquire clinical exposure from the top physicians. In addition, they hold workshops, seminars, journal clubs, and research courses in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to assist students in their professional growth in the near future.

Progress in Pharmaceutical Field Lecture by Dr. Mohammed Albati Jan 16th, 2023 As the College of Pharmacy at Alfaisal University strives to contribute to its students’ academic and professional development, they invited Dr. Mohammed Albati, a Product Specialist at Sandoz and a graduate of Doctor of Pharmacy from AlQassim University with a Digital Marketing Diploma, to present a lecture on the Progress in Pharmaceutical Field to Alfasial students. In his presentation, Dr. Albati discussed how to obtain a job, application requirements, the function of a pharmacist in pharmaceutical businesses, problems, required skills, and work progress. In order to practice, a graduate must have the SCFHS License in addition to a bachelor’s degree in Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm B or Pharm D). Other credentials would be advantageous, such as sales certificates (LinkedIn Learning), PMP, and marketing.
38
Dr. Albati emphasised on a wide range of skills, including outstanding communication skills, adaptability, resilience, development abilities, time management, accountability, emotional intelligence, and selfawareness, as the primary instruments for addressing the obstacles he highlighted in this industry, such as working in a highly dynamic environment, traveling to cover remote areas, meeting sales targets, and performing non-routine tasks. To guarantee the highest quality work and credentials, the employee must constantly prepare for the following position, volunteer or stretch assignment in the preferred role, self-branding, keep learning, step out of the comfort zone, and establish connections in their network. Dr. Albati ended the lecture with a Q&A session to receive the attendees’ inquiries and provide them with the most professional answers.

Message From the Dean College of Bussiness to the 15 th Year Anniversary of Alfaisal U niversity
42
Dr. Bajis Dodin
Professor and Dean, College of Business The College of Business opened its doors for admission of its first batch of students in the Fall of 2008 as one of Alfaisal University (AU) four colleges: College of Business (CoB), College of Engineering, College of Medicine and College of Science. Up to 25% of AU real estate was devoted to CoB; this consists of the section developed by a donation from a prominent Saudi developer, the late Sheikh Saleh Kamel. The 2022-2023 academic year marks the celebration of AU and CoB’s 15th anniversary where both have many achievements to celebrate. Within these brief fifteen years, AU grew from the infancy stage to be a first-place academic institution among the Saudi and Arab universities. This is a remarkable and unique achievement. For instance, The Times Higher Education Young Universities Rankings 2022 placed AU 1st in Saudi Arabia, 1st in the Arab World and 36th globally. The Young University Rankings list the world’s best universities that are under 50 years old. In addition, Times Higher Education has revealed the best small universities (i.e., have fewer than 5,000 students) across the globe, and AU is placed 8th in ”The World’s Best Small Universities 2022”. These ratings came as a natural result of the unique multi-dimensional continuous growth that characterized the last 15 years. The growth covers AU colleges, programs, students, faculty, visibility, and community engagement. Its contribution has been timely in serving the needs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) and its Vision 2030. Academia 2023 | 42
I am delighted to have played a pivotal role in the growth of CoB. I am fortunate to serve the post of its dean for the latest ten years. Within this period the lion share of its growth took place: - Its faculty grew in quantity, quality, and impact from 12 in Fall 2013 to over 35 in the Spring of 2023. - Its graduate students’ enrolment grew from 71 in Fall of 2013 to over 220 in Fall of 2022. - Its undergraduate enrolment grew from 136 in fall 2013 to over 900 in fall 2022. - Its MBA program grew from one generic track to six where most are designed to serve the dynamic change sweeping KSA. - Similarly, its undergraduate majors grew from one generic bachelor’s degree to six majors. - The undergraduate coop program expanded from 6 summer weeks to at least one full semester performed in high quality companies or governmental agencies. - Executive Lecture series expanded from 4 lectures to over 10 per semester. - Executive Education expanded its menu and the enrolment of its offering, similarly for research and consulting grants. - The quality of the programs and their delivery has also strengthened significantly, which is reflected in the high demand for the college graduates. - As the Universities Council in MoE updated and liberalized some of the higher education guidelines, CoB is in the process of finalizing its proposal for a Ph.D. degree in different functional areas of business (such as Accounting, Finance, Marketing, ….). AU and CoB are fortunate to be residing in the city of Riyadh which is the epicenter of wealth, business, and politics of the Middle East. These factors allowed us to build and operate a state-of-theart college of business administration that responds to the growing needs of the business community in managing the growth that continues to sweep the Kingdom. Many of the above developments in CoB emanate from this growth in the Kingdom which requires business graduates who are able to manage the growth as business leaders. The mission of CoB, as stated in its Strategic Plan, reflects the above needs. It calls for ”developing business leaders through quality education, research excellence, and fostering partnerships with local and international stakeholders.” Indeed, CoB has established programs that fulfill this mission. These include all of the above programs: Graduate and Undergraduate degree programs, Executive Education programs and Management centers. Successful implementation of the above programs cannot be realized without the hiring and deployment of the required qualified faculty. This has been a harder challenge than the establishment of our programs. CoB developed recruitment plans and packages to search for and attract qualified faculty worldwide. I am happy to report that CoB succeeded in attracting very good faculty that is second to none among business schools/colleges within the GCC region. Most faculty members are graduates of very good Western universities, with different nationalities, and bring with them the philosophies of different educational systems. After proper orientations and a short adjustment period they work as a team and benefit from CoB strong culture that brings out the best in its people. They pursue their research agendas and consulting projects, with their students’ participation, dealing with contemporary issues sponsored by governmental agencies like the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Health, Capital Market Authority, the Saudi Income and Zakat Agency, and private organizations like King Faisal Specialty Hospital among others. CoB programs have made a difference within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It has already graduated twelve cohorts of leaders. You find our graduates in private and public organizations leading the growth that continues to attract many of the planners and investors to the Kingdom. We believe these graduates are authentic leaders who work with and through others to create solutions to the Kingdom’s emerging problems and invent business models that drive economic growth. They are ahead of the curve in operationalizing the related aspires of the Saudi 2030 Vision.

Nov 9th, 2022: Ready for Media? Mr. Ahmed Dahduli - Chief Marketing & Communications Officer in Saudi Credit Bureau – (SIMAH)
The lecture titled “Ready for Media?” was presented to the audience and College of Business students. It took place on Wednesday, November 9, 2022, in the Female Lecture Theatre (LT.001) from 12:00 - 1:00 PM. Mr. Ahmed started the lecture by mentioning that the Media is a double-edged sword. He gave an example of the drone attack on Aramco. Aramco dealt with the situation with complete transparency. They called for the media and stated exactly what happened to them. This step was necessary to avoid any kind of rumor or overstatement from any other party. Then he discussed the media landscape and the effect of technology on the media. Media can be the perfect place to share your story before someone else does. After the lecture, he met with many business students to answer their questions and provide them with links to more information.
Oct 12th, 2022: Awareness of Facing Financial Fraud Invited Guest Mr. Ahmed Alsulaimani - Group Risk Director/Acting Compliance Officer in TAQA (Industrialization & Energy Services Company).
Mr. Ahmed started the lecture by distinguishing between Fraud and Corruption, where Fraud is a “false representation of facts”, while Corruption is an “intentional misuse of power or position.”. For management to avoid fraud in the organization, they need to know the fraud triangle (rationalization, pressure, and opportunity). Therefore, the first line of defense against fraud is the management, compliance and risk, then the internal audit. Fraud includes fabrication, money laundering, misuse of funds, intentional errors, and increasing profit to get extra bonuses or decreasing it to avoid paying taxes.
Oct 5th, 2022: Professional Personality at Work Mr. Turki Alnagaidan - Chief Human Officer in Saudi Capital Bureau (SIMAH)
Mr. Turki Alngaidan focused on how to gain a professional personality. The lecture was split into 6 subtopics. It was explained to the students how critical soft skills in the professional world are. He also discussed the importance of knowledge, skills, and attitude in the workplace. He explained the concept by showing a visual example of the “Triangle of Success” that represents the above three keys to success. The lecture was insightful, and it showed CoB students how to improve one’s professional personality.

MBA Book Discussion Series The debate is expected to help
participants to deeply reflect on their reading while nudging the listeners to appreciate the importance of reading for their intellectual and professional development.
"All human beings by nature desire to know," said Aristotle almost 2500 years ago. We think reading is a great way to pursue the desire of knowing. Therefore, we established a book club to read and discuss one book every month. Selected books will be assigned to book lovers to read and write a review. Then, we organize a one-hour moderated debate to discuss the book of the month. The debate is expected to help participants to deeply reflect on their reading while nudging the listeners to appreciate the importance of reading for their intellectual and professional development. The debate is open to everyone. However, student must volunteer to read the book of the month and write a brief review to be among the discussants. We hope to plant the seed of book reading habits and lifelong learning through MBA Book Club activities.

YEAR ANNIVERSARY
Message From the Dean
College of Science to the 15 th Year Anniversary of Alfaisal U niversity
Dr. Hassan Sami Shaibah
Associate Professor of Clinical Anatomy & Dean, College of Science & General Studies The faculty, staff and students in the College of Science & General Studies are delighted to be able to take part in Alfaisal University’s 15th Year Anniversary Celebration. There were several major achievements in the College over the past year. The main accomplishment was the accreditation of the undergraduate Life Sciences Program by the prestigious US based Applied Natural Science Accreditation Commission (ANSAC) of ABET. This could not have been achieved without the concerted efforts of the faculty, staff, and students in the College as well as the input of college alumni and the Advisory Board members. They were crucial in this success. Furthermore, four COSGS faculty were named in the “Stanford University’s Fourth Annual World’s Top 2% Scientists List” which was released in 2022. This was a significant achievement and is an indication of the high-quality faculty in the college. The College is renowned for its research with over a dozen patents by its faculty, staff, and students. In his welcoming remarks on the Alfaisal University website, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees HRH Prince Khalid Al Faisal bin Abdulaziz noted that the University is committed to building future generations of youth and citizens of the country and the world by providing the labor market with quality candidates to meet the needs of the Kingdom in accordance with Vision 2030. As an example of the success of this mission, life science graduates from Alfaisal University have gone on to work in numerous fields, including medical research centers, management laboratories and biotech start-ups. Students have also been accepted to top level Ivy league universities in the US and the UK. Graduates have likewise ended up working in government ministries, consulting companies, renewable energy firms, and the food industry. Final-year Life Sciences students at Alfaisal University gain hands-on research opportunities and have the chance to publish scientific papers and be awarded patents with faculty members. For more information, please see sponsored research articles. The life sciences scene is continually evolving thanks to advances in technology, and so there are opportunities to specialize and take on roles as varied as quality assurance for food and drink companies, to clinical support in medical health centers, technical support in pharmaceutical and biotech companies, as well as research development in government test centers. The College has introduced two new undergraduate Life Sciences tracks: Environmental Science & Sustainability, and Biological Sciences & Nanotechnology. The former track was based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). At the graduate level students can go on to do a Master of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. Likewise senior life science undergraduate students also have the opportunity do an Accelerated Master Program at the world-renowned King Abdullah University of Science & Technology (KAUST), starting in their final year at Alfaisal. As a performance indicator, Alfaisal University was ranked 1st in Saudi Arabia, 1st in the Arab Region, and 36th globally by THE Young Universities Ranking 2022. In addition, Times Higher Education has once again revealed the best small universities across the globe, from the US, China and South Korea to India, Japan, and France. Alfaisal University ranked 8th globally by The “World’s Best Small Universities 2022”. This was an improvement from 9th place in the previous year. Whether international trade can contribute to sustainability is a novel, timely, and important question that will most likely grow in importance over time and addresses a planetary challenge. We argue in the book that trade agreements have the potential to protect the climate nature, and therefore can foster sustainability. In other words, trade is a means to reach an end, namely protecting and preserving the planet.

An introspective analysis of EU trade law and policy is presented that highlights the complex issue of EU unity. A particular focus is given to the Doha Round and the General Agreement on Trade in Services, with empirical analysis placing the negotiations not just within the context of international trade law, but also within broader social and political contexts.

Alfaisal University Research Themes
90
Research themes are broad areas of focus that guide research efforts within a particular field or discipline. They are used to define the scope of research and to identify the key questions and issues that researchers aim to address. Research themes can be broad and encompass many different subtopics, or they can be more specific and focused on a particular aspect of a discipline.
Energy Systems
Digital Technologies Advanced Manufacturing
Human Capital
Food & Environment
Urban & Logistics Health & Pharmaceuticals
Economy & Privatization
Research themes are important because they help to structure and focus research efforts, and they provide a framework for understanding and interpreting the results of research studies. By identifying key themes and issues in a discipline, researchers can better understand the relationships between different research questions and ideas, and they can develop more comprehensive and coherent approaches to tackling complex research problems.
Consultation Alfaisal Corporate Governance Center Under consultation, the Corporate Governance Center (CGC) at the Alfaisal Center for Research and Consultancy was established in 2016 to monitor and promote good governance practices in Saudi Arabia. A team from Alfaisal University developed the Corporate Governance Index (CGI) in collaboration with consultants and with partial financial support from the former Saudi Arabia General Investment Authority (SAGIA), currently the Ministry of Investment. CGI is an evidence-based index to measure the performance of companies across multiple dimensions of corporate governance that affect their competitiveness. The index helps companies gauge their corporate governance performance and identify areas of potential improvement. Most incredibly, this index is the only one in the GCC region. This index is making it easier for companies to measure their progress on corporate governance. It is based solely on good corporate governance principles set by the CMA, SAMA and the OECD. The index consists of four key areas of measurement, including Board of Directors, Shareholder Rights, Stakeholder Relations, and Public Disclosure and Transparency.
Board of Directors
Shareholder Rights
The concept of corporate governance—the internal policies, procedures, and systems a company uses to manage its operations—is vital to creating a successful, competitive business. Corporate governance has become increasingly important in recent years, as companies look to optimize their business performance, maintain a high degree of financial transparency, and ensure that their stakeholders’ interests are aligned, especially in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Transparency
CGC also hosts conferences, forums and webinars related to important global topics of interest. In February 2021, the CGC offered a successful international corporate governance conference entitled “Investing in ESG”. Shortly after, in December 2021, the CGC ran another successful conference entitled “Effective Corporate Governance & the Independence of the Board Audit Committee.” The Center plans to run its next webinar and conference in Feb/March 2023.

A Word from the Senior Manager of the Facility Department

Eng. Malek Almobarek It is a wonderful feeling every time I write for ACADEMIA. It has become a platform where I share with you any important developments that have taken place recently in my department, whom I call my family, and how we as a team are supporting the university in achieving academic excellence and in bettering its ranking with each passing year. I visualize the facility department as a house standing on four pillars, namely Operations and Maintenance, Safety and Security, Procurement and Inventory, and Logistics. Every pillar or functional unit has its uniquely defined roles and responsibilities, and all four of them act in unison to fulfill or meet the needs of all at Alfaisal- be it students, faculty, staff, or visitors.
