Trade Committee Meeting Announced Date: Thursday 18th January 2024 Time: 10.00am Venue: Microsoft Teams (A link will be circulated prior to the meeting) The aim of the meeting is to develop our own trade committee that can understand and develop policy to influence stakeholders including government departments for the benefit of the UK Aluminium sector. The scope and terms of reference of the trade committee will be established at the first meeting. *Please note – We hope to hold future in-person meetings in London on occasion, to help boost the interactivity of the meetings and help drive the committee forwards.

New UK levy to level carbon pricing announced The UK is to implement a new import carbon pricing mechanism by 2027 to support the decarbonisation drive. • Imports of iron, steel, aluminium, ceramics and cement from overseas will face a comparable carbon price to those goods produced in the UK • Reduces the risk of ‘carbon leakage’, avoiding emissions being displaced to other countries because they have a lower or no carbon price Goods imported into the UK from countries with a lower or no carbon price will have to pay a levy by 2027, ensuring products from overseas face a comparable carbon price to those produced in the UK. Full story here: https://alfed.org.uk/new-uk-levy-to-level-carbon-pricing/

ALFED’s response to CBAM announcement (Sent to Department for Business and Trade) "ALFED welcomes the UK’s carbon border adjustment mechanism for levelling the playing field between the UK aluminium industry and international competition. With its infinitely recyclable properties and indispensable use in clean technology, aluminium is essential for industry-wide decarbonisation and the shift towards a green economy, and CBAM will help strengthen the UK aluminium industry’s position as being at the forefront of this global transition. ALFED looks forward to collaborating and engaging with the UK government on the finer details, ensuring it is a burden free process and understanding the impact on the UK aluminium sector and our biggest trade partner, the European Union." ALFED has also provided details of the announcement and a CBAM factsheet for all members on the website and will be following any developments and further announcements closely. https://alfed.org.uk/new-uk-levy-to-level-carbon-pricing/
