ALFED Reports: Impact of global conflicts ALFED, the aluminium federation, launched a new report examining the impact of the Russia/Ukraine war on the UK aluminium industry. Developed in partnership with CRU International Ltd, the document explores the short, medium and long-term consequences of government import sanctions, as well as suggesting alternative future options to maintain primary aluminium supply. With the objective of protecting the UK’s thriving aluminium supply chain, supporting domestic production and minimising the effects of geopolitical issues, the report considers how removing Russian material from imports will directly impact UK businesses, as well as how changing market dynamics will likely hit future export demand. The opportunities to increase uptake of recycled content and reduce the industry’s carbon footprint are also covered in detail, alongside the wider supply chain issues presented by a weakening global forecast. Tom Jones, chief executive officer of ALFED, commented: “Politically, and morally, pressure is increasing to ensure that all materials used within the UK have a clear path of origin and do not – in any way – support the Russian state. While Russian-sourced aluminium was only ever responsible for a small fraction of the import market, it is still important to consider the longer-term picture to ensure minimal disruption to the supply chain. “Our latest report investigates the widespread impact of global conflict, identifying both challenges and opportunities, but also raising a number of highly pertinent questions. Firstly, what does a viable future solution for material sourcing look like? Secondly, what support should the UK government offer to support the wider agenda? And, finally, what are the immediate priorities that we – as an industry – must be tackling to maintain global competitiveness? “It’s fair to suggest that this report is a hugely important resource for any business involved in the UK aluminium supply chain and I’d implore industry professionals to take the time to read it in further detail.” “Impacts to UK aluminium industry following Russia/Ukraine war” is available for members to download.

ALFED Reports: Impact of international conflict on the UK extrusions market ALFED, the aluminium federation, has launched the second report in a series of research papers analysing the impact of international conflict on the UK aluminium industry. Developed in partnership with CRU International Ltd, the document specifically explores aluminium extrusions and the changing face of the import market. With the objective of protecting the UK’s thriving aluminium supply chain, supporting domestic production and minimising the effects of geopolitical issues, the report provides extensive analysis into themes including post-COVID market recovery, the reasoning behind weakening industrial activity and the continued implications of the Russia/Ukraine war. Alongside analysing changing market trends, the document breaks down the past four years of extrusion import volume data by month, as well as detailing the rapid rise of imports from ‘Group A’ countries Vs. material from China. Tom Jones, chief executive officer of ALFED, commented: “Following the initial shock of COVID-19 on aluminium extrusion imports, the market is indeed recovering but is still yet to return to pre-2020 levels. During this time, the origins of material destined for UK shores have changed significantly. “Previously, China was the number one exporter to the UK market but, in recent times, volumes from other countries have risen fast. This trend has been further accelerated by the impacts of global conflict, with territories including Spain, Malaysia, Poland, Greece, India and Romania now comprising the lion’s share. “Our latest report investigates the changing face of the import market, analysing trends, challenges and opportunities. It’s fair to suggest that this report is a hugely important resource for any business involved in the UK aluminium supply chain and I’d implore industry professionals to take the time to read it in further detail.” “Impacts to UK aluminium extrusion imports following Russia/Ukraine war” is available for members to download via the ALFED website.

Events and Training The ALFED Aluminium Light training course was held with six delegates in attendance at Bragborough Hall on 17th October, 2023. November will see the World of Aluminium training course welcome up to 10 more members, as well as a trip for 28 members to visit the LME trading ring. All final Sector Group meetings for 2023 will also be held in November.

Annual Dinner Charity At this year's ALFED Annual Business Briefing and Dinner, we will be raising money for Children with Cancer UK. This incredible and important charity will be the key theme of the post-dinner entertainment casino, sponsored by ALFED members, Thermserve. Social Media Social media has become an integral part of modern-day communication, entertainment, and business. At the Aluminium Federation (ALFED), we use social media as an important way of engaging with our members through not only informing them of the benefits, training and networking opportunities they have access to as part of their membership, but also to give them a platform to shout about the projects and events they are getting involved in. Giving them a unique voice to share their hard work and dedication to creating a positive impact in the UK aluminium industry and the sectors move towards net zero.
