pachydermata studio New world design. Old world perfection. Pachydermata Studio is a young architecture & design studio originally founded in Mexico City in 2011 by Alfonso Bonilla BArch, now operating from Vancouver, Canada. Fellow Architect Rob Curley BSc joined in 2014, enabling our satellite operations in Dublin, Ireland. Pachydermata is a systematic term once used to describe a mammal order, from the Greek words: παχύς pachys, “thick” and δερμα derma, “skin”, meaning ‘thick skin’. From an architectural perspective the idea of skin refers to the edge of any spatial envelope. The thickness of this skin comes from a conceptual density of ideas, development and informed research that goes into each project. The usage of systematics and taxonomic terminology attempts to inform relationships between concepts. As young designers in the digital economy we believe it is essential to apply our architectural education to a variety of products at a variety of scales, that rational, aesthetic architectural design can reach as wide an audience as possible. We believe architecture & design should be affordable, sustainable and meaningful. Part of the collaborative design process in the studio leads to product research and development. The Voronoi series, now in its third iteration in as many years, is one example of Pachydermata Studio’s commitment to design excellence using 21st century methods.

VR 120-14 is a highly differentiated structure designed using the principles of Biomimicry by emulating models & systems of nature to solve complex challenges.
Region detail - Wine bottle chamber.
Voronoi A Voronoi diagram is a set of cells (regions) around points that are shaped so that the boundaries of these regions are equidistant from the center of the two nearest points. VR 120-14 starts with a material-efficient dimension of 160 x 60cm as the maximum coverage area. A rationalized number of wine bottles was determined considering the weight of the winerack, its structure efficiency and the aesthetic qualities of the piece.

1. 3/4 plywood (1st layer) 2. 3/4 plywood (2nd layer) 3. 25mm screw for interior layers 4. 25mm inverse screw for front face
The assembly of the VR 120-14 consists oF twelve staggered layers of 3/4 plywood sheets nested through digital fabrication. Each face is carefully inspected to guarantee all properties of the material are visible while holding the structural integrity of the piece. The metal components of the structure are concealed by staggering the wood in such a way that the VR 120-14 preserves intact aesthetics. At 21.5cm in thickness, VR 120-14 holds and protects a complete wine collection but remains light enough to be brought into your wine cellar.

Tailored VR 120-14 is made with plywood; an organic material capable of expressing the characteristics of wood. Finishes that range from natural color to a variety of stains and varnished coatings are available.
