COMPOSER FEATURE
Graeme Koehne – As Prolific As Ever Photo: Melinda Parent Creative
One of Australia’s most performed composers, Graeme Koehne is showing no signs of slowing down. His innovative new theatre work Shadow Dreams, a collaboration between Terrapin Puppet Theatre and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, is designed to be performed in two cities simultaneously with the performance, linked by high-speed broadband. See an excerpt here http://www.terrapin.org.au/project/shadowdreams/ From Shadow Dreams two excerpts have been included in the recording The Magic Island, the latest recording from the deservedly famous children’s charity project Hush Foundation. http://hush.org.au/collection/volume/13/magicisland Graeme’s trumpet concerto High Art is receiving numerous performances due to championship by soloist James Morrison, including an upcoming performance 6 February 2014 at Adelaide Town Hall by the Australian Youth Orchestra conducted by James Judd.
Lastly, listen to this immensely enjoyable recording of Forty Reasons to be Cheerful. It was written for the 40th anniversary this year of the Adelaide Festival Centre, and performed here by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and Arvo Volmer. This 7-min work is scored for a classical-size orchestra, and is available for hire immediately. Perfect as a concert opener for any occasion, and guaranteed to bring a smile to the audience! https://soundcloud.com/musicsales-australia/ forty-reasons-to-be-cheerful See Graeme Koehne’s complete works here www.graemekoehne.com/music
http://www.ayo.com.au/content/australianyouth-orchestra-with-james-morrison/gjgdxj Graeme has recently been commissioned to write a major new children’s theatre work for Theatre of Image based on David Malouf’s The Empty Lunch Tin, for premiere in 2015. He’s writing a work for oboe and strings to remember Guy Henderson, the former longtime principal oboe of Sydney Symphony Orchestra, which has been commissioned by oboist David Nuttall to premiere with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra in 2014.

Nico Muhly In September, Nico Muhly had no fewer than 5 major premieres! The Metropolitan Opera gave the US premiere of his opera Two Boys. The New York City Ballet Fall Gala featured the world premiere of Neverwhere choreographed by Muhly’s frequent collaborator Benjamin Millepied to his moody piece Drones and Viola. The Philadelphia Orchestra and The Westminster Symphonic Choir premiere a newly commissioned orchestral version of Muhly’s Bright Mass with Canons conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin and featuring the Fred J. Cooper Memorial Organ. His original music is featured in the new Broadway revival of Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie, starring Cherry Jones and directed by John Tiffany. And he wrote the soundtrack music for Kill Your Darlings, a movie about the early Beat Generation in which a young Allen Ginsberg (Daniel Radcliffe) and William S. Burroughs (Ben Foster) are entangled in the murder of Burroughs’ friend David Kammerer. Keep up to date with Nico Muhly’s compositions here: Photo: Matthew Murphy

Bryce Dessner Composer Bryce Dessner is better known to some as the guitarist from The National and Clogs who has also collaborated with Steve Reich, Philip Glass, David Lang, Sufjan Stevens and many others. If you’re enjoying Bryce Dessner’s new album from the legendary Kronos Quartet, then know our very own ACO Quartet is championing Bryce’s music in Australia. ACO Quartet recently performed at MONA FOMA in Hobart. http://mofo.net.au/events/mofo-eastern-sho/aco-quartet/ Check out Bryce’s entire catalog here: http://www.musicsalesclassical.com/composer/works/Bryce-Dessner
Red Poppy Music One of the boutique publishers represented by Music Sales Group is the daring Red Poppy, who issue the music of the famous Bang On A Can composers – David Lang, Julia Wolfe and Michael Gordon. In the past 30 years, they have gone from being brash young composers to widely recognized leaders of American music today, all the while sticking to their fascinating East Coast style. There’s lots of news about them here (check out Michael Gordon’s Timber, especially): http://redpoppymusic.com/ The Green Room

Bärenreiter Opera Editions OPERA: Spectrum of European Music Theatre in Separate Editions is dedicated to critical editions of outstanding works of European music theatre from the 17th to the 20th centuries. A total of 21 compositions of French, Italian, German, English, Scandinavian and Slavic origin is being edited. These include specific genres which have seldom been given attention in editorial undertakings until now and which present their own editorial problems, such as ballet, theatre music, melodrama or operetta. A new feature is the form of the presentation in so-called hybrid editions. While the scores appear in traditional clothbound volumes, the musical and textual sources, the editions of the dramatic texts, as well as the critical commentaries are prepared and presented on an electronic platform (Edirom). Thanks to this ability to access the underlying sources, the editorial decisions are completely transparent to the user. This special editorial access being implemented by OPERA’seditions uses the software Edirom, which was developed in a project of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation) based at the University of Paderborn. All components of the electronic part are encoded according to the modern standard of XML. The text components follow the standard of the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI).
From Source to Edition With each volume there is a data carrier containing the edition of the text, the critical report, digital scans of the relevant sources, as well as a digitized copy of the score. All of these elements are linked with one another in many ways with the help of the Edirom software, which is provided. This allows the user, for example, to follow in detail the path taken by the editor “from source to edition” or conveniently compare the score, the libretto and the sources.
