The Newark Graduate Housing was a third year studio project to put in practice teamwork skills. Teams were assembled in order to address the requirements of this large scale project. The proposed site is a 40 000 sf block located in University Heights Newark, NJ. The program consists of 250+ units for students of nearby campuses, storefronts, community space, underground parking, daycare, other amenities, etc.

The team strategy is the result of the analysis of traffic and access patterns into the site to respond efficiently to student traffic and provide services to the community. Once the strategy was in place, each member selected a section of the project for own development following a common language. Promenade Portal is facing the south end of the block, therefore it had to address different features that employed sunlight in an effective way.

UNIT DESIGN HAVING TO ADDRESS THREE DORMITORY TYPOLOGIES, THE NEWARK GRADUATE HOUSING COMPLEX OFFERS STUDIOS, 2 BEDROOM UNITS FOR FAMILIES AND A QUAD UNIT FOR FOUR RESIDENTS. EACH TYPOLOGY RESPONDS TO AN AGGREGATION STRATEGY TO PROMOTE COMMUNITY INTERACTION.

INNER COURT: THE HIGH DENSITY OF THE QUAD UNITS HAS A SMALL FOOTPRINT, THIS CREATES BIGGER COMMUNITY SPACES.

EDGE TERRACE: FAMILY UNITS REQUIRE A DIFFERENT LEVEL OF PRIVACY, THEREFORE, A SEMI PRIVATE TERRACE MAKES A PRIVATE AND SHARED SPACE. INNER COURT VIEW

The Newark Scholar Housing is a mid-rise six unit mixed-use facility located in University Heights Newark, NJ with the objective of creating a social learning environment. Here at the Collegiate Residence, students have the chance to collaborate with other residents or to have exhibits open to the public or colleagues. As a mixed-use facility, exposure of private areas must be controlled to ensure comfort to the residents. The exposure is controlled by the resident based on the unit typology.

U R B A N N E X U S : T HE HIG H L INE FALL 2013 // SOFTWARE: AUTOCAD, RHINO, V-RAY, PHOTOSHOP AND ILLUSTRATOR A nexus is a mean of connection; therefore, this project aims to create a modern connection between the High Line in the district of Chelsea (NYC) and the visitors of the area. The “Under Line” provides an early experience of the High Line which most times is not fully explored due to its large span across the city. To attract the public, this project offers a summarized experience of this famous New York landmark. Also as a “nexus”, a TKTS booth is located in the project to promote other attractions that the city has to offer.

C AS E S T U D Y : C H AP EL O F ST. IG NATIU S This project is an exercise for first year students to learn how architecture is documented and the variety of media one can use to present a project. Starting with the plans, sections and elevation, we used AutoCAD and have from there a starting point for our 3D models on Rhinoceros. From there, we were to render an interior shot of the building. This rendering would later be the goal of our physical model. By the end of this project, we were able to asses our own skills and recognize what areas needed to be reinforced for the upcoming challenges of second year.
