Algeria Model United Nations 2014Â : ( Three days journey, lifelong impact! )

Each year over 400.000 students from primary school to university worldwide take part in Model United Nations conferences. These latter are extra-curricular activities that can last from few hours to one week. MUN is a simulation of the different United Nations organs and other forums of international relations.

The first Algerian Model United Nations came to its accumulation through the hard work of nine secretariat members, 90 delegates from 21 wilayas, 12 DAIS, and 8 clerks. The conference theme revolved around “Youth Empowerment as it aimed at empowering youth through giving them room to voice out their thoughts, learn about diplomacy, policy making, collaboration, and enhance their understanding about international relations.

04

The conference took place in Algiers at the higher school of Algerian Affairs (ESAA) from December 21st till the 23rd,2015.Four UN organs were simulated in Algeria Model United Nations (AMUN) including United Nations Security Council (UNSC) , Economic and Social Committee (ECOSOC), Disarmament and International Security Council (DIESEC), and also the Social Cultural and Humanitarian Committee (SOCHUM). The Algerian Affairs Committee was a team added innovative idea established to discuss Algerian youth emancipation .

Participants took role of ambassadors to the UN and each delegate represented the viewpoint of a single member state of the UN, researched that country’s policy and advocated his view points to other delegates. Taking roles of nations’ delegates, participants experience the complexities of policy making and negotiation, and familiarize themselves with state policy, ideologies, and cultures different from their own. Youth participants worked intensively for three consecutive days to find solutions to international challenges, acquire new knowledge and skills, and build relationships that cross borders of background or culture. Five different resolution papers were the fruit on intensive debate and collaboration, and five delegated (one per committee) were awarded the best delegate award for their active engagement, respect of the rules, as well as great negotiation and public speaking skills. The aim of AMUN is to build an understanding of global challenges amongst young promising individuals. Using both the knowledge, experiences, and relationship they form through AMUN, it is hoped that the next generation of leaders and thinkers will be able to work in an effective way to find solutions to future global issues that are compatible with the aims and principles of the UN and promotes the spirit of cooperation .

IN SEOUL, UN Secretary General spotlights role of young people and technology in future development agenda

20 May 2015 – Continuing his official visit to Republic of Korea, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon highlighted the importance of youth, education and information communication technologies (ICTs) in shaping the future sustainable development agenda. “Data is the new oil. Data centres are the factories of the 21st century. Data is the lifeblood of decision-making. It provides the raw material for accountability,” Mr. Ban said in his remarks at the Seoul Digital Forum. He further claimed “Today, we are reaching out to the world to hear what people want for their future.”

11

Globally, six out of every seven people on earth have a mobile phone. There are three billion Internet users – and that number is increasing fast. In Africa, mobile broad-band penetration jumped from 2 percent in 2010 to 20 percent last year. Mr. Ban called for social networks that work for social inclusion and unity – around a common, global vision for a future of dignity and peace for all people. “Inspired by this vision, let us harness the power of ICTs to create a new era of sustainable development,” he emphasized. The Secretary General highlighted ,at the opening of Academic Impact Forum, the fact that this is a very powerful era for youth. “When I look at youth, I don’t see peril – I see potential. I see hope,” Mr. Ban said, calling on young people to raise their voices for peace. “I ask them often why you don’t challenge your leaders, your professors, your congressmen and CEOs. Make this world sustainable. This is the world I will have to leave. Make this situation sustainable. And I am insisting that governments start to listen to the world’s youth – including giving them a place at the negotiating table,” he said. What the terrorists fear most is not a weapon – what they fear most is young people with textbooks..

As the world prepares to adopt a bold new vision for sustainable development, Mr. Ban warned against there being too much emphasis on transferring knowledge without wisdom. Young people should challenge injustice. They should speak out for what they know is right. “When you navigate down that difficult road and find your own way, you can open up a better future for all people,” he said.

Progress on Sustainable energy improving, but 'world must move faster'

Renewable energy generation and energy efficiency improvements will need to accelerate dramatically if the world is to achieve universal access to sustainable energy by 2030, according to a United Nations-backed report

The world is heading in the right direction under the Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) initiative, the Progress Toward Sustainable Energy: Global Tracking Framework 2015 report says, but it must move faster. According to the report, some 1.1 billion people in the world still live without electricity and almost 3 billion still cook using polluting fuels.

13

In the report’s tracking period – from 2010 to 2012 – the share of modern renewable energy in the global energy mix grew rapidly at 4 per cent a year, making up 8.8 per cent of total, but to meet the 2030 SE4All objective, the annual growth rate for renewables needs to be closer to 7.5 per cent. Other areas also saw a pick-up in pace, though not enough to meet the three goals of SE4All, which are universal energy access, a doubling in the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency, and a doubling in the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix – all by 2030. The number of people without access to electricity and the number of people still cooking using polluting fuels like kerosene, wood, charcoal and dung reduced at a faster rate over the two years tracked compared to the previous 20 years, though progress on the latter was slower. Renewable energy generation and energy efficiency improvements also picked up steam but will need even more dramatic accelerations, the report says.

To help close the gap the report recommends global policy makers work to triple energy investments from the current level of roughly $400 billion to $1.25 trillion and to adopt modern methods of measuring energy access to replace more traditional measures, such as presence of a household electricity connection, which mask vast differences in the quality of energy services The report, compiled by the World Bank, also calls for transfer of knowledge and technology for sustainable energy and for increased effort to address the linkages between energy and other development sectors, including water, agriculture, gender and health. Better understanding those linkages will be critical to achieving SE4All and other development goals.
