A Guide to the Best Men’s Style, Grooming, And Etiquette Information on the Web

A

s a man whose business is menswear and style, I spend a lot of time researching blogs and forums on the web; this article is intended to bring you the best of what I have found. In my opinion, interaction is key to a strong forum; it leads to a deeper understanding and better questions. So without further ado here are some sites that offer the best in men’s style, grooming and etiquette information. Short Shrifted. A clothing and style resource for short men, Josh has authored the internets most thorough blog covering the issues facing men 5’8″ and under. A New Yorker, he routinely reviews local clothing stores and service establishments in search of deals and cuts that suit the smaller male demographic. He has a solid grasp of men’s classic style, and I especially like how he scours forums for threads pertaining to his readers in his “link round-ups.” The Houndstooth Kid. Will, The Houndstooth Kid, states: “The purpose of this blog is to point out both the common and obscure aspects of 1930s-1950s men’s style and how it affects us today. Vintage style has and is still influencing the way we dress and generally live our lives.” Think you know older fabrics – try passing his Atomic Fleck quiz! An Affordable Wardrobe. – The site’s author sums it up best:

6

TrafficMagazine/ Spring, 2014

“Searching for a cure to the current epidemic of ‘Eternal TeenAger Syndrome’ which has stricken the vast majority of American males. Enough with the flip flops and short pants. Let’s start dressing like grown men.” Clothes, Music, Accouterments, all Cheap. The Gentlemen’s Standard. Seeks to redefine how men of color approach life and style – I’ve personally talked at length with the founder, Glen Palmer, and can say with confidence that he is dedicated to his mission. A contributor to the Detroit Fashion Pages, Glen is a dedicated blogger who posts daily (340 posts last year!) and continues to produce quality content. His observations are timeless and his advice is rock solid for any discerning gentleman. Manner of Man. Manner of Man’s author, Nicola Linza, focuses on timeless fashion, art, architecture, and all things Italian. In his own words “After reading this blog, it is my hope that you will view your clothing, accessories, and the services presented to you in a new light, then seek out the finest for yourself, your lifestyle, and develop your individual character and personal style.” A great resource with excellent writing and clear thought.

style guide Social Primer . K. Cooper Ray has taken a fresh take on the age old art of proper manners. In a world where etiquette has fallen to the wayside, Social Primer is a beacon in the darkness as it discusses how to deal with the loud cell phone talker and the rules of shaking hands & chivalry in the modern age. Online forums are an amazing tool; you can ask a very pointed question and have it answered by someone on the other side of the globe within minutes. Novices, amateurs, and experts interact in a colorful conversation that continues as long as the thread that spawned it remains active. However, forums do pose risks to those without a foundation in classic men’s style. There is quite a bit of bad advice out there; a poster with 40 minutes of tailoring experience is given the same pulpit to preach as a tailor with 40 years under his belt. And do not be swayed by those with a large number of posts; look for quality over quantity. My advice? Build a solid foundation in understanding men’s style and take what you read in forums with a grain of salt; look to forums to supplement an education, not to fully sustain one.

7BASIC RULES for healthy and perfect skin

T

he term “men’s skincare” is a turn off for many. We understand it just doesn’t sound that manly. It’s always been a little better received when referred to as “taking care of your face” or “making sure your face doesn’t look like crap.” In the end, we really don’t care what gents call it, as long as they “do it” and reap the benefits, which include better daily shaves, more comfortable skin and a more-handsome look. - See more at: http://www.groominglounge.com/ blog/embarrassing-issues/7-tips-for-taking-care-of-your-face/#sthash.MveiqYvL. dpuf

Men Have 1/3 Thicker Skin Than Women. What this should mean is that guys don’t wrinkle as fast as the ladies, but since men tend to take less care of their skin than the fairer sex, the opposite is usually true.

8

TrafficMagazine/ Spring, 2014

Washing Your Face At Night Is More Important Than Washing It In The Morning. Think about it… during the day you are exposed to the environment, other people (hugs, kisses, phones, etc.) and during the night it’s usually just you, a pillow and if you’re lucky, one clean person with whom you are pretty sure of their solid hygiene habits. If you’re shaving in the AM though, cleaning your face again is recommended. Men Have 1/3 Thicker Skin Than Women. What this should mean is that guys don’t wrinkle as fast as the ladies, but since men tend to take less care of their skin than the fairer sex, the opposite is usually true. Men can take advantage of their genetic predisposition by using a moisturizer regularly, getting facials, etc. Wash Your Face Last In The Shower. Doing so before washing and conditioning your hair could lead to some zany shampoo particles setting up shop on your face. Avoid that by saving face cleansing for the grand finale.

1

SKIRNE CA

Keep It Clean

Your skin is exposed to a lot during the day—pollution, UV rays, etc.—so, for the clearest results, you have to make sure that it’s optimally clean. Rather than a drying soap, use a gel-based product like Boscia Detoxifying Black Cleanser ($28; sephora. com), which warms upon contact with skin to open pores and remove impurities. Morning and night use will ensure brighter skin and smaller pores.

2

Thirsty Surface

Some of my male clients think because African American skin is characteristically oily moisturizing isn’t necessary. No sir! When properly hydrated, skin is less prone to blemishes, ruddiness and other skin concerns. And Malin + Goetz Vitamin E Moisturizer ($45; malinandgoetz.com) is one of my faves. It contains calming chamomile to combat any redness from shaving and essential fatty acids to nourish skin. Plus, the oil-free formula won’t clog pores.

3

Shed Some Skin

After cleansing, it’s important to exfoliate any dead skin cells. I love the drugstore product Black Opal Anti-Bump Cleanser ($7; blackopalbeauty.com). As a preshave treatment, it helps discourage ingrown hairs; and with vitamins A, C and E, it also nourishes and calms the skin. Hasta la vista, irritating razor bumps!

4

Air Balanced

Most men believe toning their skin is an avoidable “extra step” in their daily routine. Not true. It helps restore natural oils that aren’t always replenished after washing. I suggest the multitasking Murad Essential-C Toner ($28; sephora. com), which contains vitamin C—a powerful antioxidant and skin discoloration corrector. Spritz over the entire face after cleansing, instead of wiping on with a cotton pad, for a wonderful, refreshing sensation that you won’t wish to avoid going forward.

5

Picture Perfect

Have you ever spotted a celebrity out and about and thought their skin looked like Instagram come to life? Well, it’s likely a result of using Talika Skin Retouch ($50; nordstrom.com). It is a secret weapon that I swear by for my male clients. It creates a filter effect on the skin that helps even tone and erase the appearance of pores, fine lines and wrinkles. With this secret gem, achieving that flawless look has never been easier.

6 Curly or Kinky Hair Razor

Opt for a traditional razor to get a close shave, which helps prevent hair from curling back into the skin when it grows back. Always use fresh, clean blades.

7

Straight or C Curl Razor

Use either an electric or traditional razor, depending on how close you want the shave. Whichever razor you opt for, make sure to keep your skin exfoliated and moisturized to prevent blemishes.

iROCK TOM FORD

Ford dropped out of NYU after only a year, preferring to concentrate on acting in television commercials; at one time, he was in 12 national advertising campaigns simultaneously.

T

om Ford was born August 27, 1961, in Austin, Texas, to realtors Tom Ford and Shirley Burton. He spent his early life in the suburbs of Houston, Texas, and in San Marcos, outside Austin; his family moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, when he was 11. In Santa Fe, he entered St. Michael’s High School and later moved to Santa Fe Preparatory School, from which he graduated in 1979. Ford left Santa Fe at age 16, when he enrolled at Bard College at Simon’s Rock, but quickly dropped out.[citation needed] He then moved to New York City to study art history at New York University. Ford dropped out of NYU after only a year, preferring to concentrate on acting in television commercials; at one time, he was in 12 national advertising campaigns simultaneously. Ford then began studying interior architecture at The New School’s famous art and design college, Parsons The New School for Design. During his time in New York, Ford became a fixture at the legendary nightclub Studio 54, where he realized he was gay. The club’s disco-era glamor would be a major influence on his later designs. Before his last year at New School, Ford spent a year and a half in Paris, where he worked as an intern in Chloé’s press office. Though his work primarily involved sending clothes out on photo shoots, it triggered his love of fashion. He spent his final year at The New School studying fashion, but

10 TrafficMagazine/ Spring, 2014

nonetheless graduated with a degree in architecture. When interviewing for jobs after graduation, he said that he had attended The New School’s Parsons division, but concealed that he graduated in architecture,[3] and that his work at Chloe was a low-level public relations position. Despite his lack of experience, Ford called American designer Cathy Hardwick every day for a month in hopes of securing a job at her mid-price sportswear company. Eventually, she agreed to see him. Hardwick later recalled the incident: “I had every intention of giving him no hope. I asked him who his favorite European designers were. He said, ‘Armani and Chanel.’ Months later I asked him why he said that, and he said, ‘Because you were wearing something Armani’. Is it any wonder he got the job?” Ford worked as a design assistant for Hardwick for two years. In 1988, Ford moved to Perry Ellis, where he knew both Robert McDonald, the company’s president, and Marc Jacobs, its designer, socially. He stayed at the company for two years, but grew tired of working in American fashion. In a later interview with the New York Times, he commented, “If I was ever going to become a good designer, I had to leave America. My own culture was inhibiting me. Too much style in America is tacky. It’s looked down upon to be too stylish.

Europeans, however, appreciate style.” Ford would soon have the opportunity to enter the world of European fashion; Gucci, a faltering luxury goods company, was seeking to strengthen its women’s ready-to-wear presence as a part of its brand overhaul. At the time, “no one would dream of wearing Gucci,” said Dawn Mello, then the company’s creative director. Mello hired Ford—then a nearunknown—as the brand’s chief women’s ready-to-wear designer in 1990. “I was talking to a lot of people, and most didn’t

want the job,” Mello said. “For an American designer to move to Italy to join a company that was far from being a brand would have been pretty risky.” Ford and his longtime partner, fashion journalist Richard Buckley, relocated to Milan that September. Ford’s role at Gucci rapidly expanded; he was designing menswear within six months, and shoes soon after that. When Richard Lambertson left as design director in 1992, Ford took over his posi-

tion, heading the brand’s ready-to-wear, fragrances, image, advertising, and store design. In 1993, when he was in charge of designing eleven product lines, Ford worked eighteen-hour days. During these years, there were creative tensions between Ford and Maurizio Gucci, the company’s chairman and 50% owner. According to Mello, “Maurizio always wanted everything to be round and brown, and Tom wanted to make it square and black.” Though Maurizio Gucci wanted to fire Ford, Domenico de Sole insisted

that he remain.[3] Nonetheless, Ford’s work during the early 1990s was primarily behind the scenes; his contributions to Gucci were overshadowed by those of Mello, who was the company’s public face. Ford launched a line of menswear, beauty, eyewear, and accessories in 2006. Dominico De Sole became chairman of the Tom Ford label.

stamina the strength

to survive by Adrianne Mickens

”I never gave up on being the BEST at whatever I tried to do, or be. I had to overcome family issues, homelessness, my environment, and my own personal decisions, but I NEVER STOPPED BELIEVING IN MYSELF! “

We recently had an inspiring conversation with Derek L. Anderson about his new book and future ventures. His many accomplishments include being a NCAA, Olympic & NBA champion. He won the 1996 NCAA Championship with the University of Kentucky and the 2006 NBA Championship with the Miami Heat. DA retired after 11 years in the NBA and is successfully running several businesses. As an entrepreneur and motivational speaker, he is an advocate for empowering young men in the Black community.

M

r. Anderson published his riveting autobiography last year entitled, “STAMINA: Don’t Run Out of Breath Before You Win.” In this book we learn about a man who overcame being homeless and abandoned by his mother at the age of eleven. During the three months it took him to write his book, Anderson admitted that revisiting these events in his life brought back the anger, frustration and sadness he once felt as a child. What I found even more compelling was his story of forgiveness and perseverance. He discussed with me his three biggest life accomplishments: graduating from high school, finding his parents and forgiving the both of them & giving his life to God. Beginning at the age of eleven, from day to day Anderson did not know whether he had a place to sleep or food to eat. He

22 TrafficMagazine/ Spring, 2014

was left to do his homework by candlelight and find odd jobs to buy food; however, he did not use his situation as an excuse. He still committed himself to graduating from high school and college. In recent years, he had an open and candid conversation with his mother that would bring them back together and give them a second chance at building their relationship. Anderson credits all of his success to his faith in God. ”I never gave up on being the BEST at whatever I tried to do, or be. I had to overcome family issues, homelessness, my environment, and my own personal decisions, but I NEVER STOPPED BELIEVING IN MYSELF! My life is what I make it, and NOT what other people say or think of me because I am responsible for my own actions and my own success!”

Derek L. Anderson

He is currently working on turning his life story into a motion picture and hopes it will serve as an inspiration for others. The movie, “STAMINA, will depict his life from childhood through his basketball career and present-day life. Anderson also founded the Derek Anderson Foundation which assists abused, battered women and children. He takes a hands on approach with counseling young men and watching their growth through adulthood. To learn more about the foundation visit: www.derekandersonfoundation.com. Maybach excelero

T

he Maybach Exelero is a high-performance unique sports car. It’s Maybach’s most expensive car with the price of about $8 million. The 700 hp (522 kW) two-seater with a twin turbo V12 engine is a one-off design built on request for Fulda Tires.Mogul Arnaud Massartic was the owner until rapper Birdman bought it Fulda is using this car as a reference vehicle to test a new generation of wide tires. The German luxury car manufacturer created the model as a modern interpretation of its legendary streamlined sportscar from the 1930s. There are various allusions to the historical predecessor, which was likewise based on a powerful Maybach automobile. In this case, the Maybach SW 38 was also used by Fulda for tire testing. The car is also famous for being portrayed in one of the episodes of long-running German show; Cobra 11. Rappers tend to have some of the biggest paychecks known to

man. Even “Birdman” who may not be the most recognized or the most talented rapper has enough money to splurge now and again. Keeping that in mind, it’s no wonder that he recently became the owner of a Maybach Exelero for which he paid an incredible $8 million. Considering Forbes lists him as the fourth wealthiest rapper and he is also the proud owner of a Bugatti Veyron and a Maybach Landaulet , this latest purchase shouldn’t astound anyone. “They got this new Maybach that I want that costs $8 million, I gotta have it,” he said in a recent interview, and why shouldn’t he when his net worth is estimated to be $100 million? Either Birdman has changed his mind or the money from his old CDs isn’t coming in as fast as he would like it to because the rapper has yet to pay for his expensive new ride. According to a representative of European entrepreneur, Arnaud Massartic (the

current owner of the Exelero), Birdman has yet to pay for the Maybach. All this means is that anyone with a spare $8 million can still snag the vehicle and pull a Jay-Z/Kanye makeover.

go ahead throw on a tie Feel the difference? It’s a small thing, but small things are the point. When you’re sporting a tie, you can pretty much stroll in anywhere you want; it’s like an Admirals Club card that you wear on the outside. Whether you’re suiting up for the office or laying out a look for the evening, a tie allows you to pull together the disparate elements of your wardrobe with a touch of texture or complementary color.

1st Thing People Notice “Nice tie!” That’s always what people say. Their eyes can’t help but go there. So while you do want a tie that looks great all on its own, remember, it shouldn’t be a novelty piece. It’s meant to speak to the rest of your outfit, not stand apart from or clash with it.

50 TrafficMagazine/ Spring, 2014

Length Matters

Width Too

Whether you’re six feet four or five feet six, the tip of the tie should hit right at your beltline— not three inches below it, not two inches above it. That is, unless you’re doing the whole short-suit thing. And then, yes, let the tie hang tight above the navel.

we like a narrow— but not superskinny—tie, about two and a quarter to two and three-quarter inches at its widest point. Much wider than that and you start to look like a congressman. This thinner width works both at the office and on the town, syncing up with any modern-cut suit.

The Knot

Keep It Solid

No Fat Wide Ties

You really need to know only one knot—the four-in-hand. It’s neither too big nor too small nor too perfectly triangular. It’s natural and elegant, and it works with every collar, from a spread to a point. Learn it, never forget it, always use it.

We almost always find ourselves reaching for solid or subtly patterned ties. They ground a busy shirt like a plaid or a gingham, and they stand strong against a crisp white or pale pink. They’re fail-safe.

“A skinnier tie just feels of-themoment right now. It’s not too mainstream and not too traditional. And there’s less material, so there’s less potential for a color or pattern to feel garish or offensive.

Rock A Bow Tie

Tie Bar Clips

TieBar

there’s a new breed of bow tie— by labels like Band of Outsiders, Black Fleece by Brooks Brothers, and Alexander Olch—that’s much more versatile, much more...wearable. Trim yet dashing, it’s the dapper man’s version of the skinny straight tie.

“It may sound obvious, but a tie bar doesn’t just clip the front end of your tie to the back end. It fastens both ends to the placket of your shirt.”

“Finally, never wear a tie bar that’s wider than your tie. That’s the worst! Keep things narrow.”

HOW TO DATE A FRIEND No one wants drama. But you have only yourself to blame if you wanted something casual and she’s seeing wedding bells the next morning. If you’re just looking for fun (we’ll cover more serious relationships in a second), communicate this before you hook up. But how? You’ll insult her, and kill your chances, with something like, “You know this is only for tonight, right?”–even if she wants something casual, too. (If you want something casual) DO show her that you can be discreet No woman wants to get a reputation, especially among her friends. Reassure her that you’re not a blabbermouth. But just as in the last example, you can’t just say it directly. Try, “By the way, if we hook up later, I’m not going to tell anyone.” Instead of teasing, we’ll use storytelling in this example. Tell her about a friend of yours who hooked up with someone and then told everyone. Say how lame you thought that was, and how you value discretion and privacy.

A side benefit is you’re subtly setting expectations that you expect her to be discreet as well. (If you want a relationship) DO get physical Have you ever been told that if you want a relationship with a woman, that you shouldn’t try to take things physical too early? My guess is that you’ve heard this mostly from women, and it’s bad, bad advice. In reality, the man who is boning a woman has a much better chance of becoming her boyfriend, if that’s what he wants and he knows what he’s doing, than the guy who is “dating and waiting.” DON’T act differently toward her in public Whether you’re friends with benefits or a committed couple, it’s not going to last long if you get jealous when you go out, and she’s her usual friendly self with

other guys in your circle of friends. If you start acting controlling or less fun, or make her less fun, then all of her friends are going to work to sabotage whatever is going on with you two. You really don’t want to be up against that. DO start at the top I fully realize that this is obnoxious, but I’m going to say it anyway. Most circles of single friends have an informal social hierarchy, and with women it’s often correlated with attractiveness. If the woman who catches your eye is a potential soul mate, go for it no matter who she is. But if you’re attracted to a couple of different women in your social circle, go for the hottest one first.

Ell cosme Ell Cosme! Bringing His Cabo Verdean Flavor To America By Anthony Davis At 24, Ell Cosme is young, full of energy and ready for global stardom. Hailing from the beautiful islands of Cape Verde, Ell Cosme is a DJ, songwriter and performer who has just released his first single, Koza Sab,” which exploded on Cabo Verdean radio in a matter of days of its release. The song, about a potential love that is so alluring it is incredibly delicious (koza sab), is now making some motion here in the States. “Koza Sab,” produced by Lil Mario Studio and written by Ell Cosme featuring a rap break by childhood friend artist Matchu. This type of collaboration fits right into his philosophy of creating music. “Everything is an inspiration,” says Ell Cosme. “It just has to be the right time, the right moment, the right second. Music comes to me all the time. So when I want to write a song, I put down the beat, and with the rest of the song I know exactly what to do. I just listen to the beat, and the beat guides me.” And the beat has been the guiding force in his life. Music has always been his constant companion. Everywhere he went there was music, “When growing up, we had a radio in our home and I would listen to the music all the time,” says Ell Cosme. “I would sing along and also with my friends. I had one friend that I would always sing together with. Music always meant something to me. And when I grew up, music grew up with me. I decided to make my own songs and here I

am.” Although “Koza Sab” can be described as RNZouck—a combination of American R&B and a West African musical form, he says that his version of Zouck music is an “evolution” of sorts, a mixture of the many kinds of music that moves his soul--Hip Hop, R&B and House music. One would think that being on the tiny islands such as Cabo Verde would limit one to being exposed to the global cornucopia of music, but it’s quite the opposite. “Cabo Verde is a group of 10 Islands and we have access to the whole world of music. We’re connected to the world, so we’ve hear music from all over. So I was exposed to all kinds of music, Chinese, African, American, all kinds.” As for the future, he is focusing on the next single “Amore In The Club (Love In The Club),” which he promises will be just as infectious as “Koza Sab.” He’s also enjoying the success of his first music video--”Koza Sab”--which has become incredibly popular on the Internet and Cabo Verdean television. And he’s looking on doing appearances to promote the singles and the upcoming album which will be released later this year. Be on the lookout and keep your ears open for this talented musician-Ell Cosme!

palm oil to kill for Once planted, the tropical tree can produce fruit for more than 30 years, providing much-needed employment for poor rural communities.

T

he benefits of the oil palm are difficult for Indonesia to ignore.

Once planted, the tropical tree can produce fruit for more than 30 years, providing much-needed employment for poor rural communities. And its oil is highly lucrative, due largely to the fact that the plant yields more oil per hectare than any major oilseed crop. Indonesia is now the leading supplier for a global market that demands more of the tree’s versatile oil for cooking, cosmetics, and biofuel. But palm oil’s appeal comes with significant costs. Oil palm plantations often replace tropical forests,

killing endangered species, uprooting local communities, and contributing to the release of climate-warming gases. Due mostly to oil palm production, Indonesia emits more greenhouse gases than any country besides China and the United States.

Like most crop-based commodities, Indonesian palm oil benefited mightily from the 2008 food crisis, as the price of the oil rose above $1,000 a ton last spring. After dropping 56 percent in value by year’s end, the price has since settled at around $555 a ton as of last month.

The Center for Orangutan Protection warned last year that the great ape may become extinct in Central Kalimantan, a region of the rapidly developing island of Borneo, if the rate of plantation growth continues for another two or three years.

PALM OIL THE PRICE DROP/BIOFUEL The price drop has put a significant dent in the palm oil industry. Yet observers are confident that international buyers, especially in China, India, and the Middle East, will continue to buy more palm oil, regardless of the commodity’s environmental or social effects. “Palm oil has become the edible oil of choice, if you will, for much of the world,” said Michael Shean, a global crop analyst with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). “More land will have to come into line to meet that demand.”

62 TrafficMagazine/ Spring, 2014

PALM OIL DEFORESTATION The worldwide recession has led many producers to cancel their seed orders and scale back expansions, according to a USDA Foreign Agriculture Service report released last month, which said that new plantations would slow - possibly into 2010. The analysis expects global demand to then return to earlier levels of 2.2 million tons per year. “Prices will go up. This is a short-term phenomenon,” said Tim Killeen, who represents the conservation organization Conservation International on the Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), a multi-stakeholder effort to form sustainable standards for palm oil production. “I know there is a lot of interest among energy companies with large European markets.” In the meantime, industry leaders are asking the Indonesian government to stimulate the palm oil market. “If Indonesia and Malaysia want to see a fair demand for palm oil and avoid all this fluctuation in prices, you have to create domestic demand,” said M.R. Chandran, an RSPO advisor and industry consultant, according to AFP news agency last month. In an effort to stimulate demand, Indonesia passed biofuel mandates last year that require the country’s cars and trucks to include either ethanol or palm-oil biodiesel in their fuel mix.

From 2000-2009, Indonesia supplied more than half of the global palm oil market, eclipsing Malaysia’s production in 2006 to become the world leader. Indonesia’s palm oil exports increased nearly 11 million tons over the decade, or about 27 percent per year. This expansion came at an annual expense of some 340,000 hectares of Indonesian countryside, mostly tropical lowland forests. The government plans to establish about 1.4 million hectares of new plantations by 2010, according to the Indonesian Palm Oil Commission. The industry group estimates that more than 7 million hectares of plantations have been established, leaving an additional 24.5 million hectares available for future expansion.

Such expansion, however, could wipe out the remaining natural habitat of several endangered species. The Center for Orangutan Protection warned last year that the great ape may become extinct in Central Kalimantan, a region of the rapidly developing island of Borneo, if the rate of plantation growth continues for another two or three years.

DR PARAG P PATEL “You can’t enjoy good food with out your teeth.”

Hello Dr. Patel, I see you have your own practice in New York. Could you tell me about yourself, your background and how long you have been practicing?

Dr. Patel: I’ve been practicing since 1999 so it been almost 15 years. After I graduated I worked in New York at Flushing Hospital doing a general practice residency for one (1) year. Then I passed the California State Board and moved to Los Angeles. I practiced in LA for four (4) years and while I was out there, I decided to check out Arizona because the economy in California got hit pretty badly after Enron. I got my license for Arizona and pracVestibulum elit ticed in Scottsdale. He asked me to dictum rutrum. do a favor because it was his only J.W. source of income so I came back to NY. I ran his clinic for about seven (7) years and then I moved over to a more high-end neighborhood.

life span, I have had a license in five (5) states. AM: I don’t think I know any doctors with (5) licenses. DP: I actually have met; I guess you can call him the world’s most respected dentist. His name is Gordon Christensen and I think he has held a license in almost every state. Which tough because in his time, you had to take a test for many regions, but now with certain states if you have been practicing for a certain number of years all you have to take is a written test. You do not have to actually work on real patients. AM: Where did you do for dental school? DP: I went to Boston University for dental school and I went to Lehigh University for my undergraduate. I was the Vice President of the student body for two of my four years there. AM: What made you pursue a career in dentistry?

In the Bronx, I only saw patients that mostly had Medicaid and was very limited as to what I could do. There was no comprehensive care; it’s just whatever they say the patients are covered for. So, after about seven (7) years it was time to move. So now I am in a Central Park South location and it’s been about a year and a half for us now. Everything is going great!

DP: Basically, my father. To be blatantly honest, if you are Indian and your father is a doctor, that’s what you’re going to be doing.

So now that we are back in Manhattan, we have the resources to send out our message about the importance of oral health as it relates to your overall wellness. I am also licensed in New Jersey because I thought that I might want to buy a practice in New Jersey. So in my

I just like working with my hands. I always like to draw. So that’s why I chose to become a dentist more because you work with your hands all day, everyday.

AM: Right. DP: I have a twin brother and he is a physician. So we have one doctor and one dentist in the family as requested. *laughing

Everyone in my parents’ social circle are all doctors. They all immigrated together

and a lot of their children have followed in their footsteps. AM: Could you explain the overall importance of oral health? DP: It covers the whole spectrum. The most important point is the mortality rates. The state of your gums reflects the state of you heart. Studies have shown us this over the past 20 years and I don’t have to go any further that my family to see that it is true. My father was a farmer before he was a dentist, so he never got any care and he was toothless by the age of 45. At 65 he had to get a triple bypass. My mother who is in her 6o’s just lost her first tooth last year and he has never been in the hospital ever. I have a patient now. She is 90 years old and she has all of her teeth. So that is on one side of the spectrum. On the other side, its as simple as having bad breath… Halitosis. Our driving force and motto at the office: Your smile is your attitude, your attitude drives your optimism & your optimism fuels your potential. No one wants to go to a job interview if you’re missing a front tooth. Social or professional life and overall health.

media do to educate people? DP: I think most people who aren’t going to the dentist regularly, 90% of them don’t go because of childhood traumatic experiences. As soon as someone opens their mouth or I look at their x-rays, I can tell right then and there that this person has never gone to the dentist. It could be because of the access too. Depending on where someone grows up, there could possibly be one dentist in a 60-mile radius. In large cities where there are dentists everywhere, most of the people who have not been it’s because of fear. Fears can slowly be alleviated. I have many patients who were so scared, but with education, show-n-tell and baby steps, we can change their minds moving forward. All dentists want to do is say, “Here is the problem,” (diagnosis) then you make a customized treatment plan for that patient. Once you finish that plan, everything is just maintenance. The patient just needs to come twice a year and you will never have any major problems. That can last you for the rest of your life.

since 1999. Those brushes are just more efficient with plaque control. It’s set on a 2-minute timer so you know that you are brushing your teeth for at least 2-4 minutes everyday. The one-handed flossers make it so easy to floss with just one hand. I can floss my whole mouth in less than a minute. AM: Can you elaborate more on how oral health affects your lifestyle? DP: It covers everything from your cardiac health to bad breath. Just by changing your eating habits and cleaning your teeth/gums, you increase your cardiac health. This is no-brainer to me. 25% of the people over the age of 65 have lost all of their teeth. Moving forward that number can be zero. Most people can die with all of their teeth and chances are they are going to live a longer/healthier life.

You just want to setup good habits. For instance, change your toothbrush to an electric toothbrush. I’ve been using mine since 1999 and I haven’t had a problem

AM: Do you think people take oral health and diseases as seriously as other medical issues? DP: No, they do not because of education. Most people just don’t know until they have a reason to go to the dentist, they don’t really go. But at that point the treatment needed is a lot more aggressive and the prognosis isn’t as good. For example, if you have a small cavity and a small filling, its going to last you forever. On the other hand, if you have a large cavity with a large filling is not going to last you that long. You’re going to have to get it retreated and replaced. So we emphasize everything is about prevention, prevention, prevention and minimally invasive dentistry. With lasers now, I don’t have to use the drill sometimes and those restorations can last 20+ years. AM: What can our communities and the
