Social Primer . K. Cooper Ray has taken a fresh take on the age old art of proper manners. In a world where etiquette has fallen to the wayside, Social Primer is a beacon in the darkness as it discusses how to deal with the loud cell phone talker and the rules of shaking hands & chivalry in the modern age. Online forums are an amazing tool; you can ask a very pointed question and have it answered by someone on the other side of the globe within minutes. Novices, amateurs, and experts interact in a colorful conversation that continues as long as the thread that spawned it remains active. However, forums do pose risks to those without a foundation in classic men’s style. There is quite a bit of bad advice out there; a poster with 40 minutes of tailoring experience is given the same pulpit to preach as a tailor with 40 years under his belt. And do not be swayed by those with a large number of posts; look for quality over quantity. My advice? Build a solid foundation in understanding men’s style and take what you read in forums with a grain of salt; look to forums to supplement an education, not to fully sustain one.

Grooming tips

to look good.

I

f you find yourself reaching for your wallet to buy a new suit or pair of jeans, hold off. You'd be surprised by how much grooming can change your appearance. Managing your body hair or changing you hairstyle will actually breathe new life into your existing wardrobe and impart a newfound confidence. Here, we present you with some essential grooming tips that'll help you put your best foot forward -- things every stylish and successful man has been doing for years.

Wash Your Face Last In The Shower. Doing so before washing and conditioning your hair could lead to some zany shampoo particles setting up shop on your face.

Washing Your Face At Night Is More Important Than Washing It In The Morning. Think about it… during the day you are exposed to the environment, other people (hugs, kisses, phones, etc.) and during the night it’s usually just you, a pillow and if you’re lucky, one clean person with whom you are pretty sure of their solid hygiene habits. If you’re shaving in the AM though, cleaning your face again is recommended. Wash Your Face Last In The Shower. Doing so before washing and conditioning your hair could lead to some zany shampoo particles setting up shop on your face. Avoid that by saving face cleansing for the grand finale.

1

Trim The Nose Hairs

This is something very basic that makes a world of difference. Many companies make nose hair clippers for a moderate price (Panasonic Nose Clipper, 101Shavers.com, $8.99). Believe me when I tell you this is something that people do notice.

2 3

Trim The Eyebrows

I actually even recommend getting them professionally cleaned (not shaped) to open up the eyes. Remember to brush them up before you leave for the day (Damone Roberts Brow Gel, DamoneRoberts.com, $20), as this opens up the eye, keeping the face more alert.

4

Fingernails Short/Clean

Dirty, long fingernails require no explanation as to why they don't work. If your budget or schedule permits, try a monthly manicure/pedicure to have someone take care of this for you. I also recommend buffing your nails as a way to keep the healthy shine without looking artificial.

6 8

Clean Ears and Neck of Hair

This is something your barber can do for you monthly that gives the appearance of good grooming. The sight of long ear hairs, or neck hair going into the collar of your shirt, is never appealing.

8

TrafficMagazine/ Summer 2014

9

Tailor Your Clothes

This is a big one, as no matter what your shape is, the right fit makes everything look so much better.

Clean Your Face Daily

5

I've always believed that it doesn't matter if your teeth are not perfectly straight and white, but please keep them clean. It is rather unappealing to talk to someone and see built up plaque or food stuck between their teeth. I know this one seems simple, but trust me when I tell you to take nothing for granted.

7 10

I have so many male friends who use the same soap on their body that they use on their face. Most body soaps are too strong for the face. You must invest in a cleanser that is just for the face (Zirh Clean Tube, HighlandMenscare.com, $15), as the facial skin is much more sensitive than the skin on the body.

Fragrance

Brush/Floss Daily

It's all right to smell good, but everyone doesn't have to smell it. Fragrance is such a personal preference, and you really must find the one that works best for you. Just remember not to bathe in it.

Stand Up Straight

Mom always told us that posture was important, and she was right. You create a sense of confidence and pride when standing tall, showing everyone you are secure in the man you are.

Match Your Belt and Shoes This one is really simple and makes a world of difference. If you are wearing black shoes, you don't wear a brown belt. I'm not saying you need to be a fashion plate, but this basic tip makes everything you wear look that much better.

W

hile it may not be traded on Wall Street any time soon, marijuana has become a booming cash crop. Traffic Magazine for Men goes behind the scenes to explore the inner workings of this secretive industry, focusing on Northern California's "Emerald Triangle," now the marijuana capital of the U.S. In this scenic pocket of America, the pot business, much of it legal under state law, now makes up as much as two-thirds of the local economy. THE ORIGINS OF CANNABIS The oldest known written record on cannabis use comes from the Chinese Emperor Shen Nung in 2727 B.C. Ancient Greeks and Romans were also familiar with cannabis, while in the Middle East, use spread throughout the Islamic empire to North Africa. In 1545 cannabis spread to the western hemisphere where Spaniards imported it to Chile for its use as fiber. In North America cannabis, in the form of hemp, was grown on many plantations for use in rope, clothing and paper.

as separate male and female plants. Male plants are taller and thinner and have flower like pods which contain the fertilizing, pollen-generating anthers. The female plant is darker and shorter and has short hairs protruding at the end of the bracteole pods. MEDICAL USE The topic of legalizing marijuana for medical use is a controversial issue since the therapeutic properties of marijuana are presently at question when claiming medicinal purpose. The impairment of cognitive abilities when under the influence of cannabis or THC and the short term effects of marijuana use can include problems with memory and learning, distorted perception, coordination and increased heart rate. Cannabis: A Schedule I Substance Having no current accepted medical use in the United States and a high potential for abuse, cannabis is a Schedule I controlled substance.

tery... The first major work to lay out the uses of cannabis in [Indian] medicine was the Ayurvedic [a system of Indian medicine] treatise of Sushruta Samhita written in 600 BC... Within the Sushrita, cannabis is cited as an anti-phlegmatic and a cure for leprosy." 200 BC - Medical Cannabis Used in Ancient Greece In ancient Greece, cannabis is used as a remedy for earache, edema, and inflammation. 1 AD - Ancient Chinese Text Recommends Marijuana for More Than 100 Ailments Chinese ideogram for marijuana ("ma") "In a compendium of drug recipes compiled in 1 AD [Pen Ts'ao Ching], based on traditions from the time of Shen Nung, marijuana is depicted as an ideogram [pictorial symbol] of plants drying in a shed. This ancient text... recommends marijuana for more than 100 ailments, including gout, rheumatism, malaria, and absentmindedness." 30 - Jesus Allegedly Uses Anointing Oil Made with Cannabis "In the Bible’s New Testament, Jesus... anointed [his disciples] with [a] potent entheogenic [psychoactive substance] oil, sending out the 12 apostles to do the same [around the year 30 AD]... Likewise, after Jesus' passing, James suggests that anyone of the Christian community who was sick should call to the elders to anoint him with oil in the name of Jesus..." "So, did Jesus use cannabis? I think so. The word Christ does mean 'the anointed one' and Bennett contends that Christ was anointed with chrism, a cannabis-based oil, that caused his spiritual visions. The ancient recipe for this oil, recorded in Exodus, included over 9lb of flowering cannabis tops (known as kaneh-bosem in Hebrew), extracted into a hin (about 11? pints) of olive oil, with a variety of other herbs and spices. The mixture was used in anointing and fumigations that, significantly, allowed the priests and prophets to see and speak with Yahweh.

Residues of cannabis, moreover, have been detected in vessels from Judea and Egypt in a context indicating its medicinal, as well as visionary, use. Jesus is described by the apostle Mark as casting out demons and healing by the use of this holy chrism. Earlier, from the time of Moses until the later prophet Samuel, holy anointing oil was used by the shamanic Levite priesthood to receive the 'revelations of the Lord'. The chosen ones were drenched in this potent cannabis oil."

800-900 - Cannabis Used as Medicine in Arabic World by Some, Labeled "Lethal Poison" by Others

Burton suggests cannabis as a treatment for depression in his influential and still popular 1621 book The Anatomy of Melancholy.

"Cannabis was used medicinally across the Arabic world in Roman times, applied to a wide variety of ailments (from migraines to syphilis) and as an analgesic and anaesthetic. The great ninth-century Islamic physician Rhazès... prescribed it widely; a contemporary, the Arab physician Ibn Wahshiyah, warned of the potential effects of hashish which he wrote was a lethal poison."

1652 - Herbalist Nicholas Culpeper Writes about Medical Uses for Hemp

70 - Roman Medical Text Cites Cannabis to Treat Earaches and Suppress Sexual Longing

1500 - Muslim Doctors Use Marijuana to Reduce Sexuality

"Pedanius Dioscorides (circa AD 4090), a Greek physician who was a Roman army doctor and traveled widely on campaigns throughout the Roman empire, studied many plants, gathering his knowledge into a book he titled De Materia Medica (On Medical Matters). Published about AD 70 it became the most important medical tome of the next 1500 years. Irrefutably included in it was cannabis, both kannabis emeros and kannabis agria, the male and female respectively. Dioscorides stated bluntly that the plant which was used in the making of rope also produced a juice that was used to treat earache and suppress sexual longing." 79 - Pliny the Elder Writes about Medicinal Properties of Cannabis Plant "Pliny the Elder, an ancient Roman nobleman, scientist, and historian, author of Naturalis Historia (79 AD), [writes] that 'The roots [of the cannabis plant] boiled in water ease cramped joints, gout too and similar violent pain.'" 200 - Chinese Surgeon Hua T'o Uses Cannabis Resin and Wine as Anesthetic Chinese surgeon Hua T'o performed surgeries such as "organ grafts, resectioning of intestines, laparotomies (incisions into the loin), and thoracotomies (incisions into the chest)... rendered painless by means of ma-yo, an anaesthetic made from cannabis resin and wine."

"After the 1500s, once Islam spread to India, Moslem doctors used the Persian theories to guide their use of cannabis. Their applications tended to stress the late effects, rather than the early ones, so they used it, for instance, as a means of reducing sexuality rather than increasing it." 1538 - Hemp Used During Middle Ages "During the Middle Ages, hemp was central to any herbalist's medicine cabinet. William Turner, the naturalist considered the first English botanist, praises it in his New Herball, published in 1538." 1578 - Chinese Medical Text Describes Medical Uses for Marijuana "A Chinese medical text (1578 AD) [Bencao Gangmu Materia Medica, by Li Shizhen] describes the use of marijuana to treat vomiting, parasitic infections, and hemorrhage. Marijuana continues to be used in China as a folk remedy for diarrhea and dysentery and to stimulate to appetite." 1611-1762 - Jamestown Settlers Bring Marijuana to North America "The Jamestown settlers brought the marijuana plant, commonly known as hemp, to North America in 1611, and throughout the colonial period, hemp fiber was an important export. Indeed, in 1762, 'Virginia awarded bounties for hemp culture and manufacture, and imposed penalties on those who did not produce it.'" 1621 - Popular English Mental Health Book Recommends Cannabis to Treat Depression English Clergyman and Oxford scholar Robert

Kingdom via William O'Shaughnessy and Reportedly Used by Queen Victoria for Menstrual Cramps

"[George] Washington's diary entries indicate that he grew hemp at Mount Vernon, his plantation, for about 30 years [approximately 17451775]. According to his agricultural ledgers, he had a particular interest in the medicinal use of Cannabis, and several of his diary entries indicate that he indeed was growing Cannabis with a high Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content marijuana."

"Cannabis was reintroduced into British medicine in 1842 by Dr. W[illiam] O'Shaughnessy, an army surgeon who had served in India. In Victorian times it was widely used for a variety of ailments, including muscle spasms, menstrual cramps, rheumatism, and the convulsions of tetanus, rabies and epilepsy; it was also used to promote uterine contractions in childbirth, and as a sedative to induce sleep. It is said to have been used by Queen Victoria against period pains: there is no actual proof of this at all, but Sir Robert Russell, for many years her personal physician, wrote extensively on cannabis, recommending it for use in dysmenorrhoea [menstrual cramps]. It was administered by mouth, not by smoking, but usually in the form of a tincture (an extract in alcohol). Cannabis extracts were also incorporated in many different proprietary medicines."

1774-1824 - Thomas Jefferson Grows Hemp at Monticello

1840s - Marijuana Becomes Mainstream Medicine in the West

"Thomas Jefferson did grow hemp [as noted in his farming diaries from 1774-1824], but there is no evidence to suggest that Jefferson was a habitual smoker of hemp, tobacco, or any other substance. Some have pointed to a supposed reference in Jefferson's Farm Book to separating male and female hemp plants as evidence that he was cultivating it for purposes of recreational smoking; no such reference exists in Jefferson's Farm Book or any other document, although George Washington did record such a thing in his own diary..."

"In the 19th Century, marijuana emerged as a mainstream medicine in the West. Studies in the 1840s by a French doctor by the name of JacquesJoseph Moreau [a French psychiatrist] found that marijuana suppressed headaches, increased appetites, and aided people to sleep."

"The great British herbalist Nicholas Culpeper (1616–1654) wrote in his [1652] The English Physitian (sic) that hemp extract 'allayeth Inflammations in the Head … eases the pains of the Gout … Knots in the Joynts, [and] the pains of the Sinews and Hips'. Culpeper's preparation probably had little psychoactivity as native cannabis grown in northern latitudes has relatively low tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content." 1745-1775 - George Washington Grows Hemp

1799 - Napoleon's Forces Bring Marijuana from Egypt to France Napoleon invades Egypt with forces that include a scientific expedition team. In addition to discovering the Rosetta Stone, the team brings cannabis back to France in 1799. The cannabis was investigated for its pain relieving and sedative effects in Europe and became more widely accepted in Western medicine. 1840 - Medical Marijuana Comes to United

1850 - Marijuana Added to US Pharmacopeia "By 1850, marijuana had made its way into the United States Pharmacopeia [an official public standards-setting authority for all prescription and overthe counter medicines], which listed marijuana as treatment for numerous afflictions, including: neuralgia, tetanus, typhus, cholera, rabies, dysentery, alcoholism, opiate addiction, anthrax, leprosy, incontinence, gout, convulsive disorders, tonsillitis, insanity, excessive

menstrual bleeding, and uterine bleeding, among others. Patented marijuana tinctures were sold..." 1889 - Article in The Lancet Outlines Use of Cannabis for Opium Withdrawal "In 1889, an article by Dr. E. A. Birch in The Lancet, then as now one of the world's leading medical journals, outlined the application of cannabis for the treatment of opium and chloral hydrate withdrawal symptoms: the mixture reduced the opium craving and acted as an anti-emetic [drug that is effective against vomiting and nausea]." 1893-1894 - Indian Hemp Commission Mentions Several Medical Uses of Cannabis "Concern about cannabis as an intoxicant leads the government of India to establish the Indian Hemp Commission of 1893-1894 to examine the question of cannabis use in India." The report mentions the use of cannabis as an "analgesic, a restorer of energy, a hemostat, an ecbolic [to induce contractions], and an antidiaretic." Cannabis is also "mentioned as an aid in treating hay fever, cholera, dysentery, gonorrhea, diabetes, impotence, urinary incontinence, swelling of the testicles, granulation of open sores, and chronic ulcers. Other beneficial effects attributed to cannabis are prevention of insomnia, relief of anxiety, protection against cholera, alleviation of hunger and as an aid to concentration of attention." 1900 - Cannabis Used for Asthma, Bronchitis, and Loss of Appetite in South Asia "Cannabis was one of the more important drugs in the Indian Materia Medica at the turn of the century. It was, and still is, widely used in rural areas of the Indian subcontinent [South Asia] for asthma, bronchitis and loss of appetite." 1906 - Pure Food and Drugs Act Requires Labeling of Medicine, Including Cannabis Label for Piso's Cure, a cannabis-based medicine, after the passage of the 1906 Pure Food and Drug Act Label for Piso's Cure, a cannabis-based medicine, after the passage of the 1906 Pure Food and Drug Act Source: antiquecannabisbook.com (accessed Dec. 12, 2011) "[O]n 30 June 1906 President Roosevelt signed the Food and Drugs Act, known simply as the Wiley Act... The basis of the law rested on the regulation of product labeling rather than pre-market approval." "An Act for preventing the manufacture, sale, or transportation of adulterated or misbranded or poisonous or deleterious foods, drugs, medicines, and liquors, and for regulating traffic therein, and for other purposes...

That for the purposes of this Act an article shall also be deemed to be misbranded... if the package fail to bear a statement on the label of the quantity or proportion of any alcohol, morphine, opium, cocaine, heroin, alpha or beta eucaine, chloroform, cannabis indica, chloral hydrate, or acetanilide, or any derivative or preparation of any such substances contained therein." 1911 - Massachusetts Becomes First State to Outlaw Cannabis "Bolstered by Progressive Era faith in big government, the 1910s marked a high tide of prohibitionist sentiment in America. In 1914 and 1916, alcohol prohibition initiatives would make the state ballot. Meanwhile, the legislature was tackling such morals issues as prostitution, racetrack gambling, prizefighting, liquor, and oral sex. Amidst this profusion of vices, Indian hemp [aka cannabis] was but a minor afterthought‌ states banned cannabis in the 1910s: Massachusetts in 1911 (150 KB); Maine, Wyoming and Indiana in 1913; New York City in 1914; Utah and Vermont in 1915; Colorado and Nevada in 1917. As in California, these laws were passed not due to any widespread use or concern about cannabis, but as regulatory initiatives to discourage future use." Jan. 1915 - President Wilson Signs Harrison Act, the Model for Future Drug Regulation Legislation "Representative Francis B. Harrison (D-NY) introduced three bills in 1913 to remedy the [drug] problem by controlling the domestic manufacture of opium and by regulating the international opium trade. According to his bills, opium could be imported or exported only for medicinal purposes. Harrison also proposed that the government '...impose a special tax upon all persons who... sell, distribute or give away opium or coca leaves...' President Woodrow Wilson signed all three of Harrison's measures into law by Jan. 1915. The Harrison Act, as the final proposal was known, required every physician who prescribed opium or any of its derivatives to put a serial number, which could only be obtained from the Internal Revenue Department, on each prescription... Every doctor who wished to prescribe narcotics was required to register annually with the federal government."

Although it does not apply to marijuana, the Harrison Act becomes the model for drug regulation on the federal level and is considered the basis for the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937. 1915-1927 - 10 States Pass Marijuana Prohibition Laws "[In 1915] Utah passes state anti-marijuana law... Other states quickly followed suit with marijuana prohibition laws, including Wyoming (1915), Texas (1919), Iowa (1923), Nevada (1923), Oregon (1923), Washington (1923), Arkansas (1923), and Nebraska (1927)." The state of New York outlaws cannabis in 1927. 1918 - US Pharmaceutical Farms Grow 60,000 Pounds of Cannabis Annually "Up to World War I, pharmaceutical supplies of cannabis indica were entirely imported from India (and occasionally Madagascar), in accordance with the U.S. Pharmacopoeia, which specified that it come from flowering tops of the Indian variety... Finally, in 1913, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Bureau of Plant Industry announced it had succeeded in growing domestic cannabis of equal quality to the Indian. When foreign supplies were interrupted by World War I, the United States became self-sufficient in cannabis. By 1918, some 60,000 pounds were being produced annually, all from pharmaceutical farms east of the Mississippi." Feb. 19, 1925 - League of Nations Sign Multilateral Treaty Restricting Cannabis Use to Scientific and Medical Only At the Second Opium Conference and the International Opium Convention, sponsored by the League of Nations and signed in Geneva on Feb. 19, 1925, Egypt proposes that hashish (cannabis resin) be added to the list of narcotics covered by the convention. The convention authorizes the use of "Indian hemp" (cannabis) only for scientific and medical purposes. Restrictions on importing and exporting cannabis resin are put into place.

This convention is the first multilateral treaty that deals with cannabis. United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) "The Cannabis Problem: A Note on the

This convention is the first multilateral treaty that deals with cannabis. United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) "The Cannabis Problem: A Note on the Problem and the History of International Action," UNODC website, Jan. 1, 1962 1928 - Cannabis Added to the UK's "Dangerous Drugs Act" Cannabis is added to the list of prohibited drugs in the UK's "Dangerous Drugs Act in 1928." Cocaine was added in 1920. 1930s - Use of the Word "Marijuana" Increases in the US "The currency of the word [marijuana] increased greatly in the United States in the 1930s in the context of the debate over the use of the drug, the term being preferred as a more exotic alternative to the familiar words hemp and cannabis... Influence of a folk etymology from the Spanish personal name María-Juana or its familiar form Mari-Juana has frequently been suggested; if so this would appear to have occurred within English." 1930s - American Pharmaceutical Firms Sell Extracts of Marijuana as Medicines "As demand for marijuana-based medications accelerated, pharmaceutical firms attempted to produce consistently potent and reliable drugs from hemp. By the 1930s at least two American companies – Parke-Davis and Eli Lily – were selling standardized extracts of marijuana for use as an analgesic, an antispasmodic and sedative. Another manufacturer, Grimault & Company, marketed marijuana cigarettes as a remedy for asthma."

1930 - Harry J. Anslinger Appointed Commissioner of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics "Harry Anslinger emerges as the pivot around whom marihuana legislation swings. He represents the most extreme reaction against marihuana use... Anslinger joined the Treasury Department in 1926 and by 1929 was Assistant Commissioner of Prohibition... [He was promoted] to the head of the Narcotics Bureau in 1930..." 1933 - William Randolph Hearst Plays Role in Denouncing Marijuana "[I]n 1933, marijuana became the target of government control. Sensationalistic stories linked violent acts to cannabis consumption... Many of the most outlandish stories appeared in newspapers published by William Randolph Hearst. Hearst reportedly had financial interests in the lum-

ber and paper industries. He may have sought to eliminate competition from hemp." "The first laws against cannabis in the United States were passed in border towns with Mexico... William Randolph Hearst was an up-and-coming newspaper tycoon, owning twenty-eight newspapers by the mid-1920s... Hearst then dropped the words cannabis and hemp from his newspapers and began a propaganda campaign against 'marijuana,' (following in Anslinger's footsteps)..." 1936 - Bureau of Narcotics Urges Federal Action to Control Marijuana "It is difficuly to know precisely the extent of marihuana use in the 1930s. The Narcotics Bureau itself never provided any official estimate. The Bureau spoke only of 'widespread use...' [Commissioner Harry] Anslinger maintained that all drug use was a plot of 'civic corruption,' a public enemy seeking to destroy the community... During 1936 the Bureau headlined the marihuana danger in its report ["Traffic in Opium and Other Dangerous Drugs," 1936]. For the first time it urged federal controls and presented a description of the vice, describing dire mental and moral changes among users." 1936 - New Medications Supplant Marijuana as Treatment for Pain "By the end of 1936... all 48 states had enacted laws to regulate marijuana. Its decline in medicine was hastened by the development of aspirin, morphine, and then other opium-derived drugs, all of which helped to replace marijuana in the treatment of pain and other medical conditions in Western medicine." 1936 - Reefer Madness Film Cautions Against Marijuana "Reefer Madness is a morality tale of how Reefer Addiction ruins the life of its young protagonist and gets a lot of other people killed, sexually compromised and committed to lunatic asylums... Reefer Madness began its cinematic life as a 1936 cautionary film entitled Tell Your Children. It was financed by a small church group, and was intended to scare the living bejeezus out of every parent who viewed it. Soon after the film was shot, however, it was purchased by the notorious exploitation film maestro Dwain Esper (Narcotic,

Marihuana, Maniac), who took the liberty of cutting in salacious insert shots and slapping on the sexier title of Reefer Madness, before distributing it on the exploitation circuit... Today, the film is a cult phenomenon dwarfed only by The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and 'Reefer Madness' is a bona fide catch phrase." This film has been long in the making, but if anything Tupac is bigger than ever, based on his popularity and how well his music sells.

LT Hutton Traffic Magazine sat down with Producer, LT Hutton about his latest project; a Tupac biopic. Open Road Films has acquired U.S. rights to Tupac, the long-awaited and highly anticipated feature on the life of Tupac Shakur directed by John Singleton. Scripted by Jeremy Haft & Ed Gonzalez and Singleton, the film traces Shakur’s life from growing up in East Harlem the son of activist Black Panther Party members, to reaching superstardom as a songwriter, hip-hop and movie star, to his vocal position as a leader in the East Coast/West Coast rap war, to his death. Shakur, leaving a Mike Tyson fight at the MGM Grand In Las Vegas, was murdered in a drive by shooting, dying at age 25 in 1996. The film is being produced and financed by Morgan Creek Productions and Emmett/Furla/ Oasis Films. The deal was set by Open Road CEO Tom Ortenberg, Morgan Creek chairman and CEO James G. Robinson, Program Pictures’ L.T. Hutton and Emmtt/Furla/Oasis Films principals Randall Emmett and George Furla. It’s a reunion of sorts for Singleton and Shakur, as Singleton directed him as an actor in the 1993 film Poetic Justice. Open Road has committed to a wide-screen release of at least 2000 theaters. This film has been long in the making, but if anything Tupac is bigger than ever, based on his popularity and how well his music sells. Producers are Robinson, David Robinson, Hutton, Emmett, Furla and Singleton and the executive producers are Tupac’s mom Afeni Shakur, Ortenberg and Peter Lawson. The casting will start shortly, for a late summer production start in Atlanta, LA and New York. AM For our readers who are not familiar with you, could please give us some details about your background in the industry. LT I started off as a music producer, of course, with Deathrow Records, leading up to my own label at Universal and taking A&R job at Ruthless Records and multiple companies in the industry. In 1998, Johnny Morgan created Epic Films Company for development of urban mainstream films. This is the short version; the other version is pretty, pretty long. AM Was the idea to do a Tupac bio yours and or

someone pitched that idea to you? LT When I was at Deathrow Records and the event happened, everyone was kind of distraught and it was a scenario where we lost a great person. A few years later when I joined Morgan Creek I always thought about the one of greatest tribute that I can do to him was to capture his life on fill theatrically. That was in 1998 and I did not have the power that I obtained later to make the film correctly and the way it was suppose to or to go after it in the route that I wanted to go. So when I went after it again, in about 2008 or 2009, I was like it was still on the table and this was way before they decided to make "Notorious." I couldn't believe that it had not been made yet. It is such a great story. Like a lot of our great bio pics still have not been made. That is a good question that I have for Hollywood in general. They have made hundreds of other pictures that really had not warrant to be on the theatrical. You watch it just because it was made. You have some of these great stories that everybody wants to see in pop culture and they still have not been touched. So, I fortunate enough to go down the path and go for the film again and next thing you know we end up getting it and the ball started rolling from there. I always had the idea to do it; it was just about getting the company and the people to believe in making a project like this because like I said before, it is a serious investment and when you explain it to the studio that we want to make a picture about a "rapper" it is like they look at you like why would this particular rapper warrant a theatrical worthy film. Then you have to break it down like he is not just a rapper but a cultural icon. He was one of the greatest influential figures in the last 40 years of Hip Hop and culture in general. So, it something that you capture and he is like the black Elvis or even bigger because Elvis is cool but Tupac is still very, very relevant. A friend of my daughter came over to my house and she had a Tupac t-shirt on and said that this is my boyfriend; she was no more than 12 or 13 years old. She knew his history. I talk to white guys who are 60 years old or more and they are interested in the Tupac movie, saying that 25 years ago they were not 60 yrs old and I was listening to Tupac. The people that didn't know Tupac are intrigued and interested in his story and his past. It is a great film that needed to be made, not just a Hip Hop standpoint but for a cultural standpoint. Tupac was America's son at that time and people have to understand that he was like a freedom for what Hip Hop is today and if there wasn't no Tupac Shakur Hip Hop wouldn't even be excepted inthe mainstream that it is now. He was part that movement to express and open up to people that you don't have to be scared of this, things that they call "Thug Life." It is not what you think it is; there is a melting pot here.

He brought white people and black people together in one. You go to his different shows, you will see a difference in the audience versus some guy who only talk to black people and some who only talk to white people. It was a mixture with Tupac. So, when you saw him with Madonna it was like wow. This guy is really accepted in a higher and a different world; even Michael Jackson talked about Tupac; Michael Jackson had on a Tupac t-shirt. How big is that? AM You mentioned the movie "Notorious", and when that came out I was like wow, I thought that maybe there were some legal reasons why the Tupac movie has come out yet. I was expecting more from this movie than actually was. Do you feel the pressure to make the Tupac movie great? You expect this movie to be awesome. LT Here is the thing; some people kind of made that seem a little different than what I said. I wasn't saying it like that; from that film, and it didn't backfire on me because everybody wanted more from the picuture, so when they said that I said that the Tupac movie will be more realistic, that was not a diss, that was saying that there are not too many executives that look like me or have the background that I have to be able to make this type of film. I am here in the office, me and John Singleton. We are deep into the project; we are indebted to the project. There is no way we are not doing everything we can to make this the most authentic way that it could be. I knew Diddy and I respect those guys, and I just feel like you got Diddy in the movie, and they made him look goofy and that is one thing that he is not. He is a life style specialist that is the reason why he took Ciroc from what it was to almost a billion dollar in sales in a year because people follow him, that is the only clothing line that I wear is Sean John because it is quality. He is not some goofball just dancing around and I don't like it that they portray him like that. Notorious was a smooth, big charming dude one of his line is "black and ugliest ever, Gucci downed to the sock, tho, so big and fly, so don't get it twisted." They didn't portray that; they portrayed some marshmallow guy. I rocked with this dude; this dude is funny as I don't know what, very charming, super talented. He had swag. So for them to make him this, I just hate that they did that to the culture and that they robbed that imagery because we don't get round two, we don't get Notorious two or Tupac Two. We have one time to deliver this so I was saying is that we are doing everything in our power to give everybody all that we got. Me and John Singleton and our companies have been working, Morgan Creek has been working diligently to make sure that this thing is correct, and you have to take your hats off to Morgan Creek because we could shot the first script, but they said LT if it is not what we think it should be lets keep taking stabs at it and lets get it to where it needs to be. They did not have to do that, we could have ran out just with the first thing for monetary gain and people would show up at the theater but we are not going to do this. This thing is too important; this it not for monetary gain. This definitely is a passion project and you have to respect what this man did in his life. He fought and he died for what he believed

in which is principles and never back down from anything. He fought for keeping it real; he may have coined the statement, "Keeping it real" "Keep it one hundred." In his film, it has to be one hundred; it has to be real because that is what he wanted people to understand about him is this is not a picture show; this is my life. In the grand theme of things, it is not my story, not John Singleton's story, not Morgan Creek story; it is Tupac's story. In this film, we want you to get to know Tupac. What made him pound the pavement more than the other thousand of rappers out there. What was he grinding so hard for, what was he running from; he was running from poverty; he never wanted to go back to see the things that he saw as a kid. He never wanted to be hungry again; he never wanted his moms to have to want anything, nor his sister. He wanted to enlightened world on the messages that he learned. He had a method behind the madness; he had a mission. He was not just an MC he did have a higer intellect; he read constantly. He was preparing for war, mentally. AM Tupac was known world wide and is a cultural icon, by making the bio pic, you are giving all us a peek at him again. You are bringing him back to share with us in present day..... LT That is why when people talk about the amount of time is taking or took, you can't judge it like because you just hit the nail on the head, we are bring him back for people to share. Do you want a version of this and this experience to be watered down to the point where you don't even recognize the guy? When we bring this film, this is probably one of the most in depth insight that you will have on him different from the documentary because this thing is going to play out as if it is real life. It is entertainment that you are going to receive. One day out of his life could have been a full movie. We are taking 25 years and trying to put it into 2 hours and 30 minutes. It was a hard decision that we had to consult about of what pieces make it and what pieces don't because it is a very, very had thing to do. I wish I could make it a trilogy. I wish I had three different parts like the Godfather. I pitched that but I could not sell it. I tried to do three parts just to tell everything, but it didn't make business sense to some people. We only have one story to tell in 2 1/2 hours. We went with Tupac's narrative for this movie because no one can argue with what he said. You cannot argue with what Tupac said his life was, what he wanted, what he saw and the quotes. He wrote poems that could be films. When you follow the voice of the poems about how he was feeling in certain moments, he tells you exactly where he is at mentally, spiritually and emotionally from his words. That is why left

it behind for people to discover. He was an artist. We spend a lot of time developing the man, and we get into the fun stuff too but everyone has seen a lot of that stuff. So, we want to get into the meat and potatoes and the trial and tribulations and still let escalation of courage, power, pride and things that he had that he would never bend over. Then there are some times when he should have bent, but he still didn't. Those are lessons that he learned. Some of those mistakes, he was only 25 years old, some of those things he was figuring out. I am not the same guy I was at 25. As I Iook back on it, I said wow the vision that he had of what young black males would be in America and what he wanted to see. A kid from Chicago went through the same thing he went through, beyond poverty, lived through the worst parts, worked, came to California homeless, didn't have a place to stay, worked my way up to sell almost 50 million records. Then, to make the transition from music to film and television and end up making a picture about the guy who had the vision that inspired me. I am that kid. Young black executive dealing on a level where Tupac said this where he wants to see us. When making this film, I can't have it shallow; I did not want to see Notorious' film shallow. This is all I was saying about that. This one we will do everything in our power to give you what it is. Before I let Hollywood or anybody rush me, it is not going to happen, we will close the book, pack it up and let it go before we disrespect this vow or defame this picture. We just did the deal with Open Roads. AM You touched on before about having to pitch, from my prospective, did you really have to pitch that hard about a bio pic about Tupac and I guess you had to, so tell me about that journey to of getting people to open the doors and working with you on this project.... LT In Hollywood, the executives that you talk to, a lot of them don't know who Tupac is, it is not a bad thing; it is just reality. You have a hard time selling certain things to Foreign buyers because the buyers don't get it; they have no idea. There is a statue of Tupac in Germany in the middle of Germany; you will have a buyer that will tell you that the film won't play well here. Go to South Africa they have on Tuapc t-shirts on; go to Japan, there are Japanese Tupacs. It is like sometimes in this world people think that it is one thing, but your reality that you face is totally different. Even some of the black magazines, you would think that stories are being told by black people, but they still have to be approved by someone other than who we are. You go to most of these companies and say this black music or urban music, 9 out of 10 times that guy that is sitting in there is a white guy. Do you really know urban music, you are about 70 years old and is in charge of black music. We are not empowered in certain scenarios. To go and get a 25 million dollar budget and 20 million dollars in P&A (print & advertising) that is a 45 to 50 million dollar investment. Nobody is giving people 50 million dollars in

general, so for a project that some people may not understand or understand a little bit, that was a hard feat and that is why Spike and those guys always say you did something great that wasn't easy so good luck with the project. I got that from a lot of different people in Hollywood and Tupac is one so hopefully there will be more to come after that; our stories need to be told. When Open Roads came they were very excited to even give us a deal, better than a lot of deals that we had on the table for distribution. Those guys actually knew a lot about Tupac. They begin to learn a little bit more and look at the story that we were developing and they were just went berserk and gave us one of the best deals that we could have gotten. I like their passion; they honestly got it. That is what led me to go with the Open Roads scenario. Open Roads actually owns a lot of the theaters so their distribution company owns the movie houses that you go to watch the movie. That is what makes them such a powerhouse. AM When will production begins? LT We are casting now, and we should begin shooting at the end of July or the middle of August. AM Have you selected your Tupac? LT No. not all. We have some great candidates and some front runners. We have not made the final decision. We search the earth to find to find the candidates. AM How much of role does is mother or other family members play in the process of the project? LT We interviewed everyone and you corroborate just about every story with everybody, family, friends. It is not really any point of the film where you did not have someone there and the story wasn't corroborated by multiple people to make sure that it was authentic. I know that in this piece this person was there now we will corroborate it with the other person that was there. We corroborate stories multiple times. We put a lot of people in the same room at the same time so that everything stays authentic. His mother has approval over just about everything to make sure everything is smooth and her son has the right perception on the screen. AM Thank you for taking the time to speak with me today.

LIX 3D Printing Pen

$139.95

Humans are accustomed to drawing in the air. We gesture with our hands when talking and will try to illustrate charade secrets by "drawing" objects in space. 3D-printing pens takes those gestures, makes them tangible and, in the hands of an artists, beautiful. Recent 3D-printing pens have been cool, but clunky affairs.

51 TrafficMagazine/ Summer 2014

Measuring 6.45 inches long, 0.55 inch in diameter and weighing just 1.23 ounces, the aluminum 3D-printing pen (which also comes in black) really is pen sized. You hold it just like a pen, and plug a 3.5mm-like jack into the base and the other end of your cable into your computer. The juice allows LIX to heat to over 300-degrees Fahrenheit, though the plant-based PLA filament (it can also use the stronger ABS plastic) only needs to heat to 180-degrees to work. That filament is fed in through a hole in the base and emerges as a superheated liquid on the tip so you can start doodling in the air. Unlike 3D printers, there is no program guiding the printing tip. Instead, to create 3D objects, you simply start drawing in the air with the LIX Pen, moving slowly as the melted filament draws out. It cools quickly so that your structure remains rigid. Each filament rod is about 10 centimeters long

and should, according to the company, last for about two minutes of air-drawing. 3D pen printing works for everything from abstract sculpture to fine art and jewelry to Tshirt design. The only limit, it appears, is your skill level and ability to hold and move the pen very, very steadily. LIX co-founder Anton Suvorov, told Mashable the company's 3D-printing pen "has no concurrence on the market," and it should arrive in Kickstarter sometime around April 14, where the company will be taking pre-orders. The starting price, at least for the campaign, will be $139.95. LIX also sells, for $59.95, a ballpoint pen replica of LIX that is nothing more than a regular pen, but why would anyone want that? look good! years to develop.

2012 Tesla Model S The automotive press has unanimously endorsed the model S design as a winner. Any minor blemishes—for example, visibility is not great—can’t undermine the beauty of the Model S design, which succeeded in its mission to make a full-size all electric sedan as attractive as possible. In terms of looks, it arguably beats its gas-powered rivals, such as the BMW 7-Series and Audi A8, while trouncing those vehicles for efficiency.

CUFFLINK SEASON For centuries, cuff links have truly distinguished gentlemen. Anybody can button up a shirt and two cuffs, but it’s not just anybody who takes the time to go the extra mile. Cuff links are completely voluntary elements of style, and that’s what gives them such prominence. Sure, some see them as stuffy, unnecessary and bourgeois; they are those who never amount to much. Cuff links provide men the chance to refine their style.

how to be the man for your woman Make her feel as if you would do anything to make sure she is safe, but don't do the "Who did you see today, who did you talk to, where did you go?" kind of thing. If at any time you can somehow say the words "I just don't want you to get hurt," or something equally as caring/sweet, go for it. Be sweet, but also courageous. they love my manstyle

the way they should be.

Gender Differences m always curious about gender differences when it comes to design. Being a man, I’m particularly on the lookout for styles that appeal to masculine tastes. But basically it’s a means with no end, because it’s impossible — and impractical — to lump all men into a category of style. Everyone is different. But there are some similarities that tend to span the spectrum of what guys want — and that differ from women’s tastes — when it

comes to design. (These similarities are easier to spot with single guys, because the style is unadulterated by another person.) One is the way we talk about and describe design.

"There is an analogy between that and the Malaysian plane," he says. "In both cases, we were not able to find anything identifiable on satellite images. We do not have an observation system to track individual objects. This system needs to be built."

garbage patch kids Before Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 went missing, sea trash was not a global headliner. But as hundreds of objects sighted off the Australian coast as possible aircraft debris turn out to be discarded fishing equipment, cargo container parts, or plastic shopping bags, a new narrative is emerging in the hunt for the missing plane: There's more garbage out there than you think. Most of it is plastic. And marine life ingests it, with catastrophic consequences.

T

his is the first time the whole world is watching, and so it's a good time for people to understand that our oceans are garbage dumps," says Kathleen Dohan, a scientist at Earth and Space Research in Seattle, Washington, who maps ocean surface currents. "This is a problem in every ocean basin." Dohan plotted the movement of debris in a time-lapse video that shows where objects dropped into the ocean will end up in ten years. The objects migrate to regions known as garbage patches. The Pacific and Atlantic Oceans have two patches each, north and south. The Indian Ocean's garbage patch is centered roughly halfway between Africa and Australia. The term "patch" suggests this floating detritus is packed together in an oceanic version of a landfill. Instead, these "patches" are actually huge zones where debris accumulates but floats free, circulating continuously. So it's possible for sailing ships and other small boats to inadvertently sail into a garbage patch region and encounter rubbish.

ocean garbage patches

Although the formation of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch was predicted in the 1970s by scientists from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, it wasn't documented until 1999 by a sailor named Charles Moore, who competed in the Transpacific race. Plastics Ingested by Birds, Turtles, Whales About 90 percent of the debris in all five garbage patches is plastic, says Marcus Eriksen, a marine scientist and founder of the 5 Gyres Institute, which works to reduce pollution from disposable plastics. "This is relatively new if you think about plastic. Only since the 1950s [have] consumers [used] plastics. Now, a half-century later, we are seeing an abundant accumulation of microplastics from all single-use, throwaway plastics like bags, bottles, bottle caps, kitchen utensils. I have pulled cigarette lighters from hundreds of bird skeletons." He says sea turtles and California gray whales are also big unintentional consumers of plastic.

Great Pacific Garbage Patch the Largest That was the case in last summer's Transpacific Yacht Race from Los Angeles, California, to Honolulu, Hawaii, when logs, telephone poles, and other wood debris from the 2011 Japanese earthquake and tsunami drifted into the Texas-size Great Pacific Garbage Patch halfway between Hawaii and California. "There were a dozen or more reports about collisions, and some of the boats were damaged by this floating wood," says Nikolai Maximenko, an oceanographer at the International Pacific Research Center at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, who has been studying the earthquake debris' drift across the Pacific. Maximenko estimates that 100,000 to one million large wood objects, including timber and beams from houses, are still floating in the area.

"You can see fish bites, so gradually, the plastic breaks into smaller and smaller pieces," says Maximenko. "After it reaches certain sizes, it can be ingested and then it quickly disappears." The highest concentration of plastics can be found in the North Atlantic garbage patch, which receives most of its content from the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Europe. Indian Ocean Garbage Patch a Mystery Because of its remoteness, the Indian Ocean garbage patch remains more of a mystery. It was discovered in 2010 by Eriksen and his crew, who sailed west from Perth, Australia, toward Africa to document it. Eriksen says

59 TrafficMagazine/ Summer 2014

it comprises a massive area, at least two million square miles (about five million square kilometers) in size, but with no clear boundaries. "It's very fluid and changes with the season," Eriksen says. "You could drag nets in one spot and come back the next day and it's different." It also has gaps near Indonesia with very little debris. Maximenko theorizes that much of the marine debris generated by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami has been salvaged by people living along the Indonesian coastline. The contents of the garbage patch circulate constantly, riding the current known as the Indian Ocean gyre from the Australian side to the African side, down the African coast and back to Australia, Eriksen says. The full rotation takes about six years, unless the debris gets stuck in the center of the patch, where it could remain indefinitely. If the Malaysian Boeing 777 crashed into the zone off the west coast of Australia where searchers are now looking, and if some of that debris remains undiscovered, it is already on its journey west toward Madagascar to join the rest of the junk in the Indian Ocean garbage patch, arriving in about a year.

“5 WAYS TO REDUCE HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE”

If you've been diagnosed with high blood pressure (a systolic pressure — the top number — of 140 or above or a diastolic pressure — the bottom number — of 90 or above), you might be worried about taking medication to bring your numbers down. Lifestyle plays an important role in treating your high blood pressure. If you successfully control your blood pressure with a healthy lifestyle, you may avoid, delay or reduce the need for medication.

Here are 5 lifestyle changes you can make to lower your blood pressure and keep it down. 1. Lose extra pounds and watch your waistline

Blood pressure often increases as weight increases. Losing just 10 pounds (4.5 kilograms) can help reduce your blood pressure. In general, the more weight you lose, the lower your blood pressure. Losing weight also makes any blood pressure medications you're taking more effective. You and your doctor can determine your target weight and the best way to achieve it. Besides shedding pounds, you should also keep an eye on your waistline. Carrying too much weight around your waist can put you at greater risk of high blood pressure. In general: Men are at risk if their waist measurement is greater than 40 inches (102 centimeters, or cm). Women are at risk if their waist measurement is greater than 35 inches (89 cm). Asian men are at risk if their waist measurement is greater than 36 inches (91 cm). Asian women are at risk if their waist measurement is greater than 32 inches (81 cm).

2. Exercise regularly Regular physical activity — at least 30 to 60 minutes most days of the week — can lower your blood pressure by 4 to 9 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). And it doesn't take long to see a difference. If you haven't been active, increasing your exercise level can lower your blood pressure within just a few weeks. If you have prehypertension — systolic pressure between 120 and 139 or diastolic pressure between 80 and 89 — exercise can help you avoid developing full-blown hypertension. If you already have hypertension, regular physical activity can bring your blood pressure down to safer levels.

surprising light on your true eating habits. Monitor what you eat, how much, when and why. Consider boosting potassium. Potassium can lessen the effects of sodium on blood pressure. The best source of potassium is food, such as fruits and vegetables, rather than supplements. Talk to your doctor about the potassium level that's best for you. Be a smart shopper. Make a shopping list before heading to the supermarket to avoid picking up junk food. Read food labels when you shop and stick to your healthy-eating plan when you're dining out, too. Cut yourself some slack. Although the DASH diet is a lifelong eating guide, it doesn't mean you have to cut out all of the foods you love. It's OK to treat yourself occasionally to foods you wouldn't find on a DASH diet menu, such as a candy bar or mashed potatoes with gravy.

Talk to your doctor about developing an exercise program. Your doctor can help determine whether you need any exercise restrictions. Even moderate activity for 10 minutes at a time, such as walking and light strength training, can help.

4. Reduce sodium in your diet

But avoid being a "weekend warrior." Trying to squeeze all your exercise in on the weekends to make up for weekday inactivity isn't a good strategy. Those sudden bursts of activity could actually be risky.

Limit sodium to 2,300 milligrams (mg) a day or less. A lower sodium level — 1,500 mg a day or less — is appropriate for people 51 years of age or older, and individuals of any age who are African-American or who have high blood pressure, diabetes or chronic kidney disease. To decrease sodium in your diet, consider these tips:

3. Eat a healthy diet Eating a diet that is rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products and skimps on saturated fat and cholesterol can lower your blood pressure by up to 14 mm Hg. This eating plan is known as the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet. It isn't easy to change your eating habits, but with these tips, you can adopt a healthy diet: Keep a food diary. Writing down what you eat, even for just a week, can shed

Even a small reduction in the sodium in your diet can reduce blood pressure by 2 to 8 mm Hg. The recommendations for reducing sodium are:

Track how much salt is in your diet. Keep a food diary to estimate how much sodium is in what you eat and drink each day. Read food labels. If possible, choose low-sodium alternatives of the foods and beverages you normally buy. Eat fewer processed foods. Potato chips, frozen dinners, bacon and processed lunch meats are high in sodium. Don't add salt. Just 1 level teaspoon of salt has 2,300 mg of sodium. Use herbs

or spices, rather than salt, to add more flavor to your foods. Ease into it. If you don't feel like you can drastically reduce the sodium in your diet suddenly, cut back gradually. Your palate will adjust over time. 5. Limit the amount of alcohol you drink Alcohol can be both good and bad for your health. In small amounts, it can potentially lower your blood pressure by 2 to 4 mm Hg. But that protective effect is lost if you drink too much alcohol — generally more than one drink a day for women and men older than age 65, or more than two a day for men age 65 and younger. Also, if you don't normally drink alcohol, you shouldn't start drinking as a way to lower your blood pressure. There's more potential harm than benefit to drinking alcohol. If you drink more than moderate amounts of it, alcohol can actually raise blood pressure by several points. It can also reduce the effectiveness of high blood pressure medications. Track your drinking patterns. Along with your food diary, keep an alcohol diary to track your true drinking patterns. One drink equals 12 ounces (355 milliliters, or mL) of beer, 5 ounces of wine (148 mL) or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor (45 mL). If you're drinking more than the suggested amounts, cut back. Consider tapering off. If you're a heavy drinker, suddenly eliminating all alcohol can actually trigger severe high blood pressure for several days. So when you stop drinking, do it with the supervision of your doctor or taper off slowly, over one to two weeks. Don't binge. Binge drinking — having four or more drinks in a row — can cause large and sudden increases in blood pressure, in addition to other health problems.
