The LDHC Foundation’s Une Passion Pour Le Canotage Special Anniversary

On Saturday, June 22 the LDHC Foundation will host its annual Wine Tasting Event. This year marks the 10th Anniversary for the Foundation and there is so much to celebrate.

Cindy Jozin of Green Cabin Pottery has crafted beautiful wine goblets to help celebrate this special occasion. Each goblet is unique in its shape and colouring. Thank you Cindy for generously donating your time and expertise!

For the past decade, the Foundation has been raising funds for our local hospi-

tal. Over $400,000 in health care enhancements have been funded by many “Generous Hearts”. These donations support the Lady Dunn Health Centre in achieving its vision of “Excellent care for all, every day.”

Les élèves des cours d’éducation physique 9e et 10e et du cours plein air de l’École secondaire SaintJoseph, Wawa, ainsi que leurs enseignants, Mme Carole Bouffard, Mme Valérie Lévesque, M. Kevin Auger, M. Michel Lemoyne et M. Mark Szekely, ont participé à des sessions de certification en canotage la semaine du 3 juin. Pas aussi simple qu’on penserait de diriger un canot

et de le garder à flot dans les rapides. Les groupes ont appris comment embarquer, débarquer, garder l’équilibre du canot, sa propulsion, établir le centre de gravité (chargement), ont pratiqué des sauvetages et plus ! Nos rivières peuvent être capricieuses et en rapide il faut toujours être à genou dans le fond du canot! Malgré toutes les précautions et l’entraînement un chavirement est vite arrivé…

pas de panique, pensez à vous en premier, relevez les pieds et laissez le courant vous emmener en zone d’eau calme.

Ensuite récupérer le canot et le remettre à flot! Afin de mettre en application tous les acquis rien de tel qu’une descente de la rivière Magpie … avec un chavirement, et oui cela s’est produit! Merci à l’équipe de Naturally Superior Adventures pour la formation, ce fut des journées profitables !

BOARD MEETING The Wawa Public Library next monthly Board Meeting will be held on Monday June 17th, 2019 at the Wawa Public Library beginning at 7:00pm. All are welcome to attend.

INTERLIBRARY LOAN SERVICES We have resumed our Interlibrary loan service. We are still unclear of the long term outlook for this service. We can only wait and see how libraries cope with the budget cuts.

COLLECTION OF BOOKS Come on in and check out our great selection of books, magazines, DVD’s, Blu-rays, Audiobooks, French books, and more. And don’t forget our awesome Children’s collection and our growing Graphic Novel collection!

CNIB For the visually impaired, we have a Daisy Reader available for check out as well as books and magazines available on discs and a great selection of Audio Books.

NEWSPAPERS The Wawa Public Library receives weekly publication of the Algoma News as well as the Sault Star on a daily basis (no paper Sunday and Monday). This is another great reason to stop in and check out the Wawa Public Library. Please note that in order to avoid putting old newspapers in the landfill; we have a have a stack available for anyone who may need them for craft material,

packing or for their woodstoves.

SERVICES The Wawa Public Library also has many other services available such as photocopying, faxing, laminating, printing, and conversion of VHS to DVD. DONATIONS The Wawa Public Library welcomes the donation of gently used DVDs and books! What we don’t catalogue we put in our book sales. Thank you in advance for supporting the library!

Programs Available Through CHADWIC and WAVS

CHADWIC

CHADWIC Home offers a 10 bed emergency shelter service. The shelter is located in Wawa, but the service is offered to any women and her children within the North Algoma, Chapleau area. Emergency transportation can be arranged for women and their children who need to come to the shelter. In addition to safe, confidential accommodation, we also provide food and basic necessities, laundry facilities, private bedrooms, children’s play areas, and some storage area.

As a resident of CHADWIC Home, you will have access to: emotional support, information, and referrals. We will provide assistance in accessing housing, financial aid, child care and legal representation. We will provide advocacy and accompaniment to appointments. These services are offered free of charge.

ONTARIO ENERGY BOARD NOTICE TO CUSTOMERS OF ALGOMA POWER INC. Algoma Power Inc. has applied to raise its electricity distribution rates and other charges.

Algoma Power Inc. has applied to the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) to raise its electricity distribution rates effective January 1, 2020. If the application is approved as filed, a typical residential customer using 750 kWh per month and a typical commercial customer using 2,000 kWh per month would see an increase by the following amounts: Customer Class Residential using 750 kWh Commercial customer using 2,000 kWh

Bill Impact $2.33 per month $7.44 per month

Other customers, including businesses, may also be affected.

The above noted residential customer bill impact includes reductions under the Distribution Rate Protection program.

Algoma Power Inc. also holds an interim electricity distribution licence for Dubreuil Lumber Inc. The proposed rates may also affect customers in the Township of Dubreuilville. It is important to review the application carefully to determine whether you may be affected by these changes.

Distributors such as Algoma Power Inc. typically apply for a full review of their rates every five years. Any rate changes for the years in between are made by applying an OEB-approved formula which is tied to inflation and other factors intended to promote efficiency. You may not get notice of future rate changes made by applying the formula.

The OEB is an independent and impartial public agency. We make decisions that serve the public interest. Our goal is to promote a financially viable and efficient energy sector that provides you with reliable energy services at a reasonable cost.

BE INFORMED AND HAVE YOUR SAY You have the right to information regarding this application and to be involved in the process.

• You can review Algoma Power Inc.’s application on the OEB’s website now.

• You can file a letter with your comments, which will be considered during the hearing.

• You can become an active participant (called an intervenor). Apply by June 24, 2019 or the hearing will go ahead without you and you will not receive any further notice of the proceeding.

• At the end of the process, you can review the OEB’s decision and its reasons on our website.

June Is Senior’s Month! Annual Garden Party Celebrates 14 Years!

The Ontario Seniors’ Secretariat declared the June 2019 Seniors month proclaiming; "Aging Strong: Respect and Protect Seniors". Aging is about living, and everyone should be able to age strong in an Ontario that is open to all. The theme represents the importance of seniors’ valued experience and independence as they age, while celebrating their many contributions in building this province, and protecting what matters most to them.

The Garden Party has become a staple event in our Community where we celebrate with those in the community who have, in the past, contributed to what we are today. Our seniors at Lady Dunn Health Centers’ the Long Term Care wing get in on the fun, welcoming guests to their “home”. This year we celebrate our 14th year hosting this event.

Everyone looks forward to an old fashioned Garden Party with ladies and gents in hats strolling lawns festooned with colourful tents. The Red Hat ladies who make an appearance every year will be joining us with their antics and good cheer. We are hoping for sun and gentle breezes, but we know what summer in Wawa can be like, so we are prepared for anything.

Weather permitting we will have tents to shade our guests and entertainment, or bring it all indoors. So, rain or shine the show will go on! There

Refreshments, musical entertainment, and fun will start at 1:30 p.m. and run till 3:00 p.m. on Thursday June 20th.

Entertainment this year will be provided by the Goodtimers. Go easy on your lunch that day, the hor’dourves the Lady Dunn kitchen serves up are fantastic. Everyone is welcome, so come on down with your mom and dad or bring a friend. It is a time for everyone to join together with our local long-term residents, and celebrate all seniors’ contributions to this wonderful community!

Every year the Seniors Solution Council comes up with ideas to celebrate senior’s month, as well as addressing senior’s issues in our community for the rest of the year.

It is a committee that was set up by the Township to address issues and concerns that affect seniors in our community. It has representation from people and organizations that either are seniors or work with seniors. The Wawa Family Health Team, the Canadian Red Cross, the Royal Canadian Legion, and the Wawa Goose Club all have a representative on the committee.

If you have any concerns regarding seniors issues you wish to bring to our attention, or if you wish to be part of the committee, please feel free to call any of these organizations for contact information.

Thanks to the support of our many sponsors, hard working volunteers, and exceptional competitors Michipicoten Wado Kai held a successful karate tournament this past weekend. Our first Karate in Wawa Tournament marks the return of sport karate to Wawa and harkens back to a decade ago when we hosted our last Kenny Brown Memorial Tournament. It was such a treat to see the gathering of senior Wawa black belts, smiles of young competitors, and to hear the kind words of those who came out to support us.

COUNCIL NEWS

At the Corporate Planning Committee Meeting Councillor Hatfield opened with a resounding thank you to all garbage pickers in our town. Besides Karin Grundt and her helpers, she thanked several residents by name and acknowledged the many others unnamed who work diligently in all areas of our community to present a garbage free environment.

Two presentations followed, one by representatives of Algoma Power Inc who outlined their annual update on accomplishments and future projects on the horizon. Mayor Rody thanked Algoma Power for their partnering and extended much appreciates for keeping the Municipality involved.

Next, Michael Kresin from Kresin Engineering updated Council on the Traffic Study for uptown Wawa in several areas: proposed lane arrangement on Mission Rd, pedestrian cross walks, downtown pedestrian crossings and regular/accessible parking strategies, school area pedestrian biking and traffic signage, and Queen St and Michipicoten River Rd traffic concerns in the Michipicoten Village.

Meeting followed. Council authorized a donation package of various permits in a total of $372 to be given as prizes at the 18th Annual Charity Golf Tournament to be held on Friday, July 5.

Council approved the Fuel System Upgrade to the Municipal Infrastructure Services Garage budgeted amount be increased by $140,000 in the 2019 Capital Budget to be funded from Reserve Funds (Public Works Equipment).

Council approved the award of proposal for the supply and installation of Recreation Equipment to Nature's Instruments in the amount of $378,500 plus HST. Approval was given by Council to award the demolition of Dr. Rose's Beach House in the amount of $16,894 plus HST to 1972677 ON LTD. Council authorized the Missinaibi Sustainable Forest Licence Shareholder Agreement Deputy Mayor to sign the agreement on behalf of the Municipality of Wawa.

Bylaws given three readings and passed: • 3200-19 - to confirm Council proceedings at its June 4 meeting.

• 3201-19 - to licence and regulate Temporary Vendors in the Municipality of Wawa including Transient Traders, Hawkers and Peddlers.

The 3 entrances to Wawa are now inviting and clean, what a task that was. Hwy 17 north to south is 90 bags of trash lighter, and 2 truck loads of plastic bottles and glass are not going to the landfill. The beer cans alone brought $78.80!

The circumference of approximately 10 km of our little town is (or better: was) clean…what about the thousands of kilometers where nobody cleans? Yes, mother nature is very forgiving and grass will cover it…And when sweeping the mess under the carpet, or ignoring the problem fails, we ship our trash to the Philippines or Malaysia, where it will age (more valuable), and then we get it returned for a price tag of 300-thousand dollars of tax payers’ money; because nobody has use for diapers and household trash. Pardon my sarcasm, but it is sad and inexcusable that our big, rich country has no solution to deal with the growing need for the disposal of our over-packaging of goods.

Much of the responsibility should of course belong to the manufacturers of products as well as the education of the consumers.

Other countries have a solution; as a matter of fact: recycling is a big profitable industry – but not here!

REVIEW Minor Amendment Review Magpie Forest 2019-2022 Contingency Forest Management Plan The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF), and the Wawa Area Local Citizens’ Committee (LCC) invite you to review the MNRF-accepted minor amendment to the 2019-2022 Contingency Forest Management Plan (CFMP) for the Magpie Forest and to provide comments.

BEERKENS, Nellie (née Sevriens) November 11th, 1935 – December 26th, 2018 Nellie Beerkens, 83, died peacefully on Wednesday, December 26th, 2018 in Ottawa, Ontario.

Nellie is lovingly remembered by her husband Gerald of 60 years, her children: Gary (Cathy), John (Katrina), Rudy (Patti), Nancy (Peter) and Sonya (Dave); fondly remembered by her six grandchildren (Crystal, Jeffrey [Crystal], Tamara, Hanna, Jack and Danya) and four great-grandchildren (Cayden, Brianna, Fayth and Ethan); and sadly missed by her many friends from Wawa, Ontario.

Nellie is greatly missed by her loving family in Venlo, Holland: her six sisters (Mien, Maria, Trix, Tilla, Fien, and Anne-Miek) and four brothers (Sjraar, Sjaak [deceased], Hay, and Frans [deceased]).

Funeral mass will be held at St. Monica's Catholic Church in Wawa at 11:00 a.m.

After approval, the amendment will remain on the Ontario government website for the duration of the CFMP. During the 15-day review period, there is an opportunity to make a written request to seek resolution of issues with the MNRF District Manager or the Regional Director using a process described in the Forest Management Planning Manual (2017) (Part C, Section 7.1.5).

INSPECTION Inspection of Approved Aerial Herbicide Project Martel Forest and Pineland Forest The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) invites you to inspect the MNRFapproved aerial herbicide projects.

As part of our ongoing efforts to regenerate and protect Ontario’s forests, selected stands on the Martel Forest and Pineland Forest (see map) will be sprayed with herbicide to control competing vegetation, starting on or about: July 15, 2019. On the Martel Forest, Forza Silviculture herbicide, registration number P.C.P. 26401 Pest Control Products Act will be used. On the Pineland Forest, the herbicide VisionMax silviculture herbicide, registration number P.C.P. 27736 Pest Control Products Act will be used.

The approved project description and project plan for the aerial herbicide project is available for public inspection by appointment during normal business hours at the RYAM Forest Management, Chapleau office (Martel Forest) and the EACOM Timber Corp.

Alice got the call early on the morning of Good Friday.

She had just gone downstairs to make coffee and get out the eggs for the omelets, bacon, and orange juice, out of the refrigerator, when the phone rang. She was surprised who was calling. She instantly thought that it could not be good news.

“Hi, Alice. It's Pam from the drug store. Have you heard the news? The pharmacy was robbed last night, and even worse, a cop was shot right inside the front door. It was that nice hunky Sgt. James Bond. He was the one who investigated your shooting at Mac's last January, wasn't he?

Anyway, there is blood all over the floor. Marie called me last night about 11:00 to tell me.

I was just watching the news when she called. Normally I am in bed by then, so at least I wasn't woken up out of a sound sleep. But anyway, she needed me there to help check to see if anything was missing. I was so rattled and upset by the time I got there. Pam introduced me to the officer in charge, Inspector McLeod.

He explained what he needed me to do. So I got busy. What a job that was, and so time consuming. It was nearly four this morning before I finished checking things out. After all that, there didn't appear to be anything else, except maybe some candy, razors, and all our Tylenol. The worst part is that they cleaned us out of Percocet and oxycontin. I hate to think what the street value on that will be – tens of thousands, I am sure. It's awful.”

She paused to catch her breath.

That was when Alice cut in.

“Whoa, Pam. I'm still half asleep. I don't believe it. Have they caught anybody yet? How is James. He was so nice and helpful when I was shot. I hope he will be okay. You say he was shot inside the store?”

“Yes, right by the front counter. I assume as he came in, the robber shot him. I believe he was hit in the stomach area.

They have transported him to Sunnybrook Hospital this morning. He's in pretty serious condition, I gather. Anyway, I just wanted you to hear all this from me first, before you

heard it on the news, or from anybody else. Just wait til the press get wind of this. It will spread beyond Wawa, you can bet. Better get yourself prepared for the onslot.”

“Thanks, Pam. Is there anything I can do? Do you need me at the store?”

“No, Marie and I have everything under control. The OPP forensic guys are here now, dusting for fingerprints, and all that CSI stuff they do.

Marie – what a time to be the boss, eh- is still talking to the cops. Of course, she has to stay at the store until the investigation is over, and the cops give the okay to lock up. There is still the drug unit to talk to, and forensics, I think she said.

Who knows how long this all will take. I am still here too, and don't know for sure when they will let me go. Needless to say, I am exhausted. Then once they get all the info they need to proceed with the case, we still have to wait for the clearance to clean the blood off the counter and floor. Then we have to replace the locks too. For now, I guess Marie is going to do an inventory sheet to transfer all the meds to the care of Inspector McCleod.

They have a locker set aside at the police station. for now until we can get the pharmacy secured again. I don't know what will happen on Monday when we won't be ready to re-open. What a mess. I am surprised how well Marie is holding up for now. But I am sure this will hit her hard later.

What a way to start Easter weekend, eh? Thank goodness we weren't opening tomorrow, since we switched days off for Easter Monday. Oh, I gotta go. One of the narcotic guys needs to talk to me. Bye for now. Sorry to disturb you. I will keep you posted.” She hung up.

Just then Henry came into the room, and asked who was on the phone. She explained the situation. Then as she started to tell him about James, she stopped suddenly, and stared at Henry, and her jaw dropped and she blinked furiously.

“Oh, no, don't tell me you did this robbery. You were out last night at Tony's, you said.

when I came home at ten-thirty. That would be just enough time to hit the store, shoot James, and get home. No wonder you were in bed so early.

You didn't want me to find out.

Okay, so where are the drugs, and where is the gun?” She was yelling by this point, and turning red in the face as her fury rose.

“No, stop right there. I didn't rob any store or shoot anyone last night. You can call Tony.

He will verify that I was there.”

He hoped that his implied righteous indignation would suffice to throw her off, but she was not finished yet.

“If I find out you are lying to me, and you really did this, we are through. I will file for divorce so fast, and then I can testify against you when they send you to jail for life.

I am going out. I can't stand the sight of you right now.

I need time to cool off and decide what to do next.” She paused momentarily before declaring - “And to think we almost got away for our trip to the Soo for the weekend. You would have had all that time to get your story straight and I would have been clued out about it all. Damn you!” She turned and left the room, went to the bedroom, changed into her clothes, and left the house, with the coffee still dripping, and the eggs and orange juice still on the counter.

Henry was really shaken by her reaction. He didn't know what to do. He debated whether to stay, or run. He felt the world closing in on him.

He paced around the house for a while before making his decision. He decided to flee.

So he began packing a few clothes. Then he realized that he needed some money, and his passport. Cuba sounds like a good place to move to for a start, he thought as he packed it away. Then he thought that Alice must have some money laying around. He happened to spot her purse on the floor of the closet. He picked it up and dumped the contents out on the bed. Then he opened it wide to check the side pockets. In one of them, he came across her bank book.

He was shocked to realize that she had set up a separate account, and had not told him about it. He opened it up to see how much she had in the account, and was amazed to see that there was over two grand. On the inside page she had conveniently written her PIN number. He smiled, and thought to himself, “That will come in nicely along with what's in my own bank

account. It will be a good start for my new life.” He put that in the suitcase too. Then he thought about BB. He really should tell him what he was doing, and hoping he could get some money off him – a little extra at least, to offset what he was going to get from Alice. But he knew that he didn't have time right now.

I'll call him from the Soo. Then he realized how crazy that idea was. BB would kill him first before ever loaning him money, even though he had delivered the drugs to him.

No, better to just disappear, and hope BB would write him off, – as if! Henry concluded.

He dreaded to think how far he might go to track him down.

But can't worry about that now, he concluded. I have to get away from here fast.

He took one last look around, and then headed towards the front door. He had his jacket on, and was just about to open the door to leave when the door opened from the other side, and there was Alice standing in the doorway, with a policeman right behind her.

“Going somewhere, Henry?” she asked as she pushed him back into the hallway.

He stammered as the two of them forced their way inside, and ushered him into the living room. He was still clutching his suitcase.

“Thanks, Mrs. Greene. I will take over from here. It appears that your concerns may have been justified. Mr. Greene, please take off your coat, and put down the suitcase. I have a few questions to ask you, if you don't mind.” Sgt. Richard Tracy ordered. He did as he was told. He was sick inside, and panicking. It showed too, to both of them.

After a brief interrogation, he broke down, and confessed to the robbery. But he valued his life too much to give up BB's name. He knew that would be worse than anything the cops could do to him. He also pleaded his case that he was surprised by Sgt. Bond's appearance and yelling at him that startled him and shot in self-defense, but he could see that he was not going to get any sympathy there.

He looked imploringly at Alice, and begged for forgiveness. He blamed it on his gambling addiction getting out of hand, and he was too ashamed to admit it too Alice. All he got was a glare, and a re-iteration that she was filing for divorce.

He was read his rights, and handcuffed and lead out to the waiting cruiser. They soon found the gun and balaclava stashed out in the garage at

the back of a drawer in his work bench as evidence. Then Alice brought out the old dress from the incident in January, and gave it to him. She stated that she was pretty sure he had committed that robbery as well, and had shot her in the process.

After Sgt. Tracy had left, she fixed herself a stiff drink, and sat in the big lounge chair in the living room. She sat there for the longest time, just sipping her drink and thinking about what lay ahead. Then suddenly she began to chuckle, and then roared with laughter.

“Well, good riddance, Henry.

Now I have free rein to bring over Mystery Man whenever I want. I won't have to worry about you coming in on us either. I love it. What a loser you turned out to be. I would love to call him now, but he is with his wife this weekend.

Oh, I need to tell somebody about this. I'll call Pam. She will be thrilled to know the robber was caught so soon.

Marie will be relieved too. I can milk this sympathy factor for all it's worth – Oh, Alice, how awful for you to find out it was your own husband who did these terrible deeds.

You must be devastated. -- not just from Pam, but everyone.”

After a couple of minutes she got up and went to the kitchen and finished making her omelet and frying the bacon, finishing up with toast and jam. She then sat at the kitchen table sipping her coffee, as she looked over a Good Housekeeping magazine, looking for decorating ideas. She muttered to herself: “Hmmm, I think that will look spectacular in my new living room in my new house. Gotta get out of this dump. Been wanting to for ages. Too bad it's going to happen over such pathetic circumstances. Oh, Henry.” She paused, and began to chuckle at what she just said. “And no, I don't mean the chocolate bar either.” That got her moving, and she got up and washed the dishes, and then headed for the bathroom to take a shower, after which she got dressed and headed down to the drug store.

It was all boarded up, and she could not see any stir inside, so she headed back home, packed a few things and headed to the Soo as planned.

Henry had a terrible day, spent at the police station, and ended up in a jail cell, Not how he thought his Easter Good Friday was going to go. And so it went for Alice and Henry on this Easter weekend.
