What to learn from Eid-ul-Adha Hazrat Amirul Momineen explains the essence of sacrifice in Eid-ul-Adha Sermon
Hadith-e-Rasul – Sayings of the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa
Habitual good works Hazrat Abu Musa, Allah be pleased with him, narrates that the Holy Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: “When a servant of Allah is accustomed to doing good works and falls ill or goes on a journey, his deed will be recorded for him similar to how it would when he was well and staying at home.” (Sunan Abi Dawud)

led the congregation that had gathered at the Baitul Futuh Mosque, Morden in the Eid-ulAdha prayer. Huzooraa then delivered his Eid Sermon.
After Tashahud, Ta‘awuz and the recitation of Surah al-Fatihah, Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa recited verse 38 of Surah alHajj (chapter 22 of the Holy Quran), the translation of which is: “Their flesh reaches not Allah, nor does
their blood, but it is your righteousness that reaches Him. Thus has He subjected them to you, that you may glorify Allah for His guiding you. And give glad tidings to those who do good.” Continued on page 2
So understand full well that mere knowledge of tactic and theoretical training are of no avail, until they are coupled with action, effort and practice. One ought to observe that it is precisely for this reason that governments do not allow their armies to sit idle. Even in a time of peace and comfort, they create war scenarios to keep their armies engaged, and target practice and parades, etc., are a daily routine. As I have just mentioned, just as knowledge and skill in the use of weaponry and the like is required on the one hand, in order to gain victory in the field of battle, on the other hand, exercise and knowledge of best practice is also imperative. Similarly, in war and battle, trained horses are required – horses that do not fear the sound of guns and canons, and do not scatter and retreat at the sight of chaos; rather, advance, come what may. Similarly, the souls of mankind cannot triumph in the field of battle against the enemies of Allah without tireless exercise, rigorous practice and the best of training. Friday 16 August 2019 | AL HAKAM
This Week in History 16 - 22 August 16 August 1924: Hazrat Musleh-eMaudra was en route to Europe. The ship carrying this entourage, sailing through the Mediterranean Sea, on this date touched the shores of Brindisi, a port city on the Adriatic Sea, in southern Italy’s Apulia region. Huzoorra boarded a train from this port city to reach Rome. During his 4-day stay in this capital of Christianity, his schedule remained very tight. He was interviewed by national press and had a meeting with the Italian Prime Minister, Benito Amilcare Andrea Mussolini in his office. Huzoorra intended to meet Roman Catholic Pope Pius IX, but the pontiff was not available due to maintenance work being carried out in his residence. Aside from all these activities, Huzoorra went on a special excursion to visit the Catacombs. 16 August 1946: During the Great Calcutta Killings, a widespread communal riot occurred between Muslims and Hindus in the city of Calcutta (now known as Kolkata) in the Bengal province of British India. The local Jamaat also braved the gravity of the turmoil. Financial losses of Ahmadi traders and shopkeepers were estimated at around 300,000 rupees. 17 August 1925: Hazrat Maulvi Rahmat Alira departed for Indonesia under the auspices of Hazrat Muslehe-Maudra, with the aim of establishing a mission there. He arrived in Sumatra in September. Despite landing in a foreign land, his resolve overcame all possible barriers. He learnt the language, began tabligh and soon started discussions and debates with the local ulema (religious scholars). He established the first Jamaat within a few months, with eight people performing Bai‘at. 17 August 1955: Hazrat Maulvi Abul Ata Sahib was in Quetta and remained occupied in some healthy discussions with a few notables from the Bahai faith. Maulvi Sahib had a strong zeal for tabligh and was a knowledgeable person in the field of comparative studies. Hazrat Maulvi Sahib prepared five research papers about the Bahai faith and these monographs were later read out for further discussion until 22 August. Bahais were also invited for further arguments. This study was later published in book form also. 18 August 1945: Hazrat Sufi Muhammad Hassan Musa Khanra passed away in Perth, Australia at the age of 82 and was buried in Karrakatta cemetery. He entered the fold of Ahmadiyyat in 1903. He remained occupied in serving the Jamaat and Islam in different capacities.
19 August 1946: Maulvi Ghulam Ahmad Mubashar Sahib reached Aden, Yemen to establish a mission there. 19 August 1953: Hazrat Musleh-eMaudra was in Karachi and remained occupied in different Jamaat-related activities and gatherings. Huzoorra delivered an Eid sermon on 21 August; on 24 August, he addressed a gathering of Khuddam; on 26 August, Huzoorra spoke at an event organised by Lajna Imaillah; on 27 August, he graciously blessed a special event designed by the Ahmadiyya Merchants Association; Huzoorra delivered his Friday sermon on 28 August and finally, on 30 August, he spoke to Jamaat Karachi. 19 August 1962: Hazrat Nawab Amatul Hafeez Begumra, daughter of the Promised Messiahas, was in Hamburg during her European sojourn. She blessed the Hamburg mission house with her stay until 22 August. 20 August 1941: Hazrat Munshi Zafar Ahmadra, appeal writer from Kapurthala and noble companion of the Promised Messiahas, passed away on this day. He was amongst those companions who embraced Hazrat Ahmad’sas message very early on and remained loyal and devout to his cause till his final days. 21 August 1949: Hazrat Musleh-eMaudra addressed a large gathering of the general public about Islam and contemporary Western philosophy. 22 August 1921: Hazrat Musleh-eMaudra was in Kashmir. On this date, Huzoorra went to Sri Nagar’s locality of Khanyar. There, he visited the tomb of Prophet Jesusas and prayed. 22 August 1924: Hazrat Musleh-eMaudra reached London’s Victoria Station. During his stay in the city, Huzoorra was interviewed by the correspondents of the The Evening Standard and The Star. A separate press conference was also called and addressed. During the tour, Huzoorra held conferences and events for the propagation of Islam Ahmadiyyat and spoke to various organisations about the truth of Islam. From all aspects, this tour was a success and a constant shower of God’s help and blessings was witnessed. 22 August 1933: Hazrat Musleh-eMaudra received an invitation from the USA. World Fellowship of Faiths from Chicago was organising its second international conference between 27 August and 17 September. Huzoorra instructed the missionaries in America, Sufi Muti-ur-Rahman Sahib and Mian Muhammad Yousaf Sahib to attend the convention. Huzoorra graciously penned a powerful message for the forum.

Hazrat Khalifatul Masih then said that we had gathered to celebrate Eid-ul-Adha, or the Eid of sacrifice. Not only in Mecca, but all over the world, Muslims would be sacrificing animals. However, Allah has explained that although this is a part of Eid and it is a righteous deed, if the essence of sacrifice is not borne in mind during this practice, then these sacrifices are worthless. God is not desirous of the blood of animals, nor is He in need of this sacrifice. If anyone is bereft of Taqwa, even if hundreds of thousands of animals are sacrificed, God’s pleasure cannot be won. Allah thus explains that Taqwa is the actual essence of this sacrifice. One should be ready to sacrifice everything for the sake of Allah. One should be ready to sacrifice a small thing to attain a much more exalted goal; one should be ready to follow God’s commands always. Through this sacrifice, one should realise that faith must be given precedence above worldly affairs. Huzooraa explained that if this Eid of sacrifice does not draw our attention towards our responsibilities and obligations, then it is no more than a festival and is not a means of attaining the higher ranks of Taqwa. This Eid should take us to our actual purpose and we should not just be happy in consuming meat and feeding it to others. We can only benefit from this day if we are ready to present our necks before God, worship Him as is required, become grateful servants of our Lord for turning us towards Islam and Ahmadiyyat and for becoming such servants who are ready to sacrifice our life, wealth, time and honour for the sake of the Jamaat. We should pledge to seek Allah’s pleasure in fulfilling the rights of our Bai‘at. Once we attain these objectives, only then can Allah count us among His loved ones. Huzooraa narrated a quote of the Promised Messiah, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas, in which he said that Namaz and roza (fasts), if observed without sincerity, are completely worthless. Yogis and Sannyasis also have many spiritual exercises and due to the extent of their exercises, their hands become sore due to constant use. However, the Promised Messiahas explained that these exercises and struggles were such that could not bring nur (spiritual light) to them. Yes, it may appear to be a physical struggle in the way of their faith, but in fact, as it is an extreme physical exercise, it takes away from the soul and becomes an entirely physical ritual. That is aa
why in the Quran, Allah states: “Their flesh reaches not Allah, nor does their blood, but it is your righteousness that reaches Him.” Allah does not desire for our physical endeavours to reach him, rather the betterment of our spiritual conditions. The Promised Messiahas then says that a question arises that if only the spiritual conditions reach Him, why then must we practice such physical exercises? From dawn to dusk, why should we fast and torment ourselves if only the spiritual conditions are what matter? The answer is that if there is nothing occurring physically, then the spirit cannot be improved. The various movements in Salat impel various levels in our spirituality. If we practice rituals without knowing what purpose they are serving, then it is futile. When humility is practiced physically, the spirit also humbles. With the various actions in Salat, our soul is taught true humility before Allah. The hallmark of a true believer is to follow the commands of Allah, and to do so, be able to sacrifice their body and soul in His way and excel in Taqwa. Referring to attaining Taqwa and excelling in spirituality, the Promised Messiahas said that we should love Him as if we have died in His way. Just as we slaughter animals, we should consider ourselves slaughtered in the way of Allah. When anyone’s Taqwa is less than this, then it is not a sufficient level of Taqwa. Prophet Abrahamas, Prophet Ishmaelas and Hazrat Hajiraas (Hagar) attained this rank and made huge sacrifices in the way of Allah. In their remembrance, today, Muslims commemorate the noble examples of sacrifice in an attempt to attain those levels of sacrifice. This family did not permit any believer of any age group or of any gender to make excuses that they should be exempted. Young and old, man and woman, all presented the highest standards of sacrifice and this is an example for us all. Hazrat Hajira’sas response to Prophet Abrahamas was that if God had instructed him to leave his family in the desert, then he should not fret over leaving them and should follow the command verbatim. Thus, sacrifices made in the way of Allah are never wasted, something which this family witnessed, and something that many would later witness. This noble sacrifice was such that it remains to this day an example for us all. Not only this, but in this line, a noble prophet would appear who would revive the highest examples of sacrifice and sincerity – Prophet

Friday 16 August 2019 | AL HAKAM Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. Huzooraa said that the narration of Badri Companionsra he is giving sermons on nowadays shows that not only men, but women and children presented the most noble sacrifices in the way of Islam. In this age, in the Bai‘at of the Promised Messiahas, we should assess whether we have attained the same levels of piety, or if not the same, then at least close to their examples. By the grace of God, there is a group from among us who follow Allah’s commands to the letter and sincerely tries to improve their moral and spiritual conditions. However, there is another group, unfortunately, that has been engulfed in worldly pursuits and materialistic gains. They lack the true essence of Taqwa. Regarding the ranks that we should endeavour to attain, the Promised Messiahas once said that we should ponder over the finest ways of attaining Allah’s pleasure. Huzooraa further explained that if we do not try to improve ourselves and better even the smallest of sins, they gradually take us away from Allah. For example, if we miss even one Namaz, it gradually draws us away from higher ranks of spirituality. At another place, the Promised Messiahas says that the Quran has explicitly mentioned the dos and don’ts. God Almighty does not desire for disorder to spread in the earth, rather He desires for unity to lead in the world. Whoever has an iota of enmity or spite for their brethren does allow for this to happen. Only one who is an enemy of unity can have hatred for his fellow beings or wish to cause them hurt. Huzooraa prayed towards the end that Allah may enable us to tread along the paths of Taqwa, that this day of sacrifice draws us towards the true meanings of sacrifice and we are able to cleanse our soul, attain Allah’s pleasure and become of those who Allah has given glad tidings to. Huzooraa instructed the Jamaat to pray for those who have offered their souls in the way of Allah. May their progenies always partake of the blessings of Allah. May Allah accept the sacrifices of their progenies also. We should also pray for the early and pioneering missionaries who were sent to Western and worldly countries for their lofty statuses. We should also pray that their progenies always remember their forefathers’ noble examples and try to live up to their examples. Those who offer their time and services for the Jamaat and its propagation should also be remembered in prayers; may Allah accept their sacrifices. Asiran-e-rah-eMaula should also be prayed for that Allah swiftly removes all difficulties from their way. Huzooraa then prayed that Allah may also have mercy upon us all and cover our flaws and shortcomings. May each and everyone of us increase in our level of faith. May we witness the victories of Islam more than ever before so that we may witness the true Eid. Towards the end, Huzooraa said: “Offer these prayers profusely, increase your levels of faith and always bear in mind the rights of your fellow brothers. This is the lesson that Eid-ul-Adha gives us. May Allah enable us to act upon it.” After Khutba-e-Thaniya, Huzooraa led everyone in dua, after which he extended a hearty “Eid Mubarak” to all those present and those celebrating Eid around the world. Huzooraa then departed for the Fazl Mosque where he had lunch with his greater family and other members of the Jamaat.
Worldwide delegations meet Huzoor post-Jalsa Salana UK
Delegates from Ghana in the blessed presence of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih V
he Jalsa Salana activities of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih V are not limited T to three days at Hadeeqatul Mahdi. aa
Following Jalsa Salana, the vast number of international delegates consisting of new converts, members of parliament, journalists, civil servants, professors, academics, dignitaries, religious leaders, chiefs and professionals are granted the opportunity to meet with Huzooraa. Both Ahmadi and non-Ahmadi guests are present within these delegations. In the mulaqats, they share their sentiments regarding Jalsa, take advice and ask questions to Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa. The groups were fortunate to have personal and group pictures with Huzoor and were also gifted books in their respective languages by Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa. This year, the meetings were held at the new Markaz in Islamabad immediately after Jalsa Salana, on 5,6 and 7 August. On Monday, 5 August, a group of newly converted Kurdish and Dutch guests had the opportunity to meet with Hazrat Khalifatul Masihaa. During the mulaqat, the converts expressed their happiness for meeting Huzooraa. As the mulaqat started, Huzooraa asked if it was their first time visiting the UK and
how they found the Jalsa. Upon this, the new converts replied in the affirmative and said that they had found the Jalsa to be a symbol of love. During the mulaqat, one girl requested for prayers for her mother who was suffering from progressive blindness. In response, Huzooraa graciously said, “You can use homeopathic medicine. If you write to me and send me the medical report, I will prescribe some homeopathic medicine.” Throughout the mulaqat, Huzooraa enquired from the young new converts if they all attend school and gifted them with a pen each. A guest from the government of Kyrgyzstan, who is an expert in religion and counter-terrorism, had the opportunity to meet with Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa. At the beginning of the mulaqat, Huzooraa asked how her experience was at the UK Jalsa. She replied expressing her surprise at the discipline and the humanitarian work the Ahmadiyya Jamaat carries out throughout the year. She further said that after seeing the prize distribution during Jalsa Salana, she really liked how the Jamaat paid special attention to education, especially for girls. During the meeting, while discussing the state of the Muslims and alluding to
the fear many people have with Muslims, Huzooraa stated, “Unfortunately, this [fear of Muslims] is due to the actions and deeds of the Muslim groups. I don’t say that their fear is absolutely wrong; they’re quite right, those who fear. But they should see our example as well.” At the end of the mulaqat, Huzooraa presented the guest with a gift of the Holy Quran and a pen. A group of five Icelandic men had the opportunity to meet with Huzooraa on 5 August. One member, who works for the US government in international development, expressed his surprise at Huzoor’saa background in agriculture and said that he himself has an interest in agriculture and works with farmers. He went on to say that he had been travelling back and forth to Ghana and other parts of Africa and was trying to implement an irrigation facility. Upon this Huzoor said, “They all depend on rain water. There is no irrigation facility.” Huzooraa also said, “Provide them with an irrigation facility because the soil there is very fertile.” An integrated community Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa then asked the guests about their professions and how

they found the Jalsa. To this, they replied that they were very fascinated to see the Jalsa and expressed their surprise on how organised it was. One member asked about the challenge of integrating different cultures from across the world into one community. Upon this Huzooraa stated: “The basic thing is the religion. If you are a true follower of religion and you believe in the true teachings, then there should not be any difficulty because the Quran states that Allah has made different tribes and ethnic groups and people of different nations.” Huzooraa further added, “If you realise this fact, then you can integrate easily.” The mulaqat came to a close with a group picture, after which Huzooraa presented them with books. Success of a country A three-man group from Gabon’s government had the opportunity to meet with Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa. During the mulaqat, Huzooraa asked their views on Jalsa Salana, to which they showed gratitude for being invited and said that it was very large well organised conference and were amazed at how such an event could take place with no issue. Huzooraa said that this is what is necessary for the growth and development of the world and other world leaders should try to implement this. During the mulaqat, the members of government discussed and sought advice from Huzooraa on how they can further develop their country. Huzooraa made it clear that success lies with leaders showing absolute justice whilst also stressing the importance of education. Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa added, “We are ready to help with what we can.” “The future of the nation is in the women’s hands” A total of six people from Belize had the opportunity to meet with Huzooraa. Among them was a journalist, police commissioner, organiser of Belize Basketball Tournament and a graduate of Jamiat-ul-Mubashireen Ghana. During the mulaqat, Huzooraa asked the police commissioner what he thought of the Jalsa. Replying to this, he said that looking at the world today, the message His Holinessaa gave at the Jalsa is the right message and something there is a dire need
of.
Adding to this, the journalist, who stated that she personally has committed to further support the message of Ahmadiyyat, said that Huzoor’saa address to the women was very powerful. She said that it was a message of empowering women and is very important today. Upon this, Huzooraa stated, “The future of the nation is in the women’s hand.” At the end of the mulaqat, all members were fortunate to have a personal picture with Huzooraa and were presented with books as a gift. Not a new Islam A group from Macedonia and Slovenia, consisting of lawyers, professors, doctors, students and journalists, came to see Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa on 5 August. Once everyone took a seat, Huzooraa asked how everyone was and how they saw Jalsa Salana. One elderly lady replied by saying, “[We enjoyed it] very, very much. It was something completely new and different. What we expected from Islam, this was something new. I did not know that you exist.” She further added that though she was a Christian, she loved Islam and enjoyed discussing the religion. Talking about Ahmadiyyat, she said: “Now I have found another type of Islam. [This is] just what we have always wanted; something less strict, something more open, something more tolerant, something full of love, and that was this [Islam Ahmadiyyat].” In response, Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa smiled and said, “That is the true Islam, not a new kind of Islam.” The background to Islamabad A reporter from the most viewed television channel in Macedonia told Huzooraa of a story he published earlier in the year, connecting Huzoor’saa address at the National Peace Symposium 2019 and the Christ Church Mosque shootings – the report proved effective in battling Islamophobia and religious radical groups, he explained. The journalist also spoke of a new report his channel was preparing with regard to the new Islamabad Markaz. He asked Huzooraa how Islamabad was chosen as a mini city and whether there were plans to establish similar places around the world.
Hazratul Amirul Momineenaa replied by saying: “Wherever we have communities, they are trying to acquire lands. Even in Canada, we have a village there that is called Peace Village and almost 95% of the inhabitants of that village are Ahmadis.” Huzooraa further explained the demographics of peace village and other properties of the Jamaat such as the Abode of Peace building in Canada. Regarding Islamabad, Huzooraa said that not every Ahmadi would stay here, rather only the staff and office workers of the community. Huzooraa said, “Since I am the head of the Ahmadiyya Community and I am living here, there is a need to have a centre here.” Huzooraa also explained that all across the world, we try to establish areas where Ahmadis can live in close proximity so that mosques and other facilities are easily accessible. Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa then clarified an important point. He said, “It does not mean that we do not want to integrate with the local society. We try to integrate and this is why we announced that our multipurpose hall, just adjacent to the mosque, is open to everybody, whenever local communities want to hold their functions and they can come here.” Huzoor’s view on Jalsa Salana The same Macedonian journalist asked Huzooraa about his own views concerning this year’s Jalsa Salana, whether he was satisfied with it. Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa replied: “My main concern is that whatever message we give to our community members, they digest it and practice it. And if they are doing it, that is my wish. And if it has been done, then I am happy.” A medical doctor who attended the Jalsa Salana for the first time said that something she noticed about Jalsa Salana in particular was the welcoming nature of people and their generosity. She said that as an organisation, the Jalsa, both in the men and women’s side, was exceptional. The nicest people A Slovenian gentleman who is a Muslim expressed his sentiments regarding Jalsa before Huzooraa. He said that he found the Ahmadiyya Muslim teachings very appealing and the people who were at Jalsa Salana were the nicest group of people he had witnessed. He also mentioned that he enjoyed praying behind Huzooraa and the whole experience at Jalsa was very special for him. Help for children A delegation from Spain also had the opportunity to meet with Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa. Huzooraa asked the group how they found the UK Jalsa. One member said that it was an honour to experience the Jalsa and stated that they wished to come back and continue learning about the Jamaat. During the mulaqat, the group had the opportunity to ask Huzooraa various questions and seek advice with regard to their respective fields. One lady was the president of a Spanish non-profit organisation that is dedicated to help orphan children with special needs. She requested for guidance on how to further
help these children. Huzoor said, “We can also help you for giving homeopathic medicine. If you send us their symptoms and conditions, we can send some medicine which is quite helpful.” At the end of the meeting, one lady, expressed that this was her first time visiting the Jalsa and said that the message the Ahmadiyya Community gives is something very good. She said that she hoped that the community would continue to spread this message. A delegation from Kababir had the opportunity to have a sitting with Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa on Monday, 5 August, the day after Jalsa. As Huzoor entered, he enquired regarding the total number of people present and further asked how everyone found the Jalsa and who was here for the first time. During the mulaqat, the group had the opportunity to share their stories with Huzooraa. One gentleman stated that coming here after a long time, it was a surprise to see how much the Jamaat had grown and developed in the UK. His son said that during Jalsa Salana, we learnt the true essence on patience and he expressed his gratitude to Huzooraa. He stated that after coming here, he now appreciated the very busy schedule of Huzooraa and how much he does in a day. During the mulaqat, Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa gifted the children with pens and chocolates. “African countries emerge as leaders of the world” – Advice to politicians Delegates from Sierra Leone consisting of member of parliament and judges met with Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa. As with all delegates, Huzooraa enquired about the sentiments and views on Jalsa Salana from the guests. Talking to a member of the new ruling party of Sierra Leone, Huzoor said: “Now people have voted for you, so you should work hard to get the love of people and to serve them. This is the duty and responsibility of the ruling party because Islam says and the Holy Prophetsa said that a leader of the nation is the servant of the nation, so this should be in your mind all the time.” Advising further, Huzooraa said: “If political parties stick to their manifestos, then you can bring a very significant and big change in your country. But unfortunately, in our countries, including Pakistan, our manifestos are very positive and give hope to the people. But when the time comes for implementation, all the politicians withdraw and they make so many excuses. So there should not be any excuse.” Speaking of service, Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa added: “If you want to improve your nation, if you want to improve your country, then Allah the Almighty has given you the opportunity to serve your nation and you should make the best use of it. There should not only be an ambitious manifesto and no result.” Speaking of developed countries, Huzooraa explained: “European countries and Western countries; why are they developed countries? Because they at least implement
Friday 16 August 2019 | AL HAKAM and work on their manifestos. At least 70 percent of their manifesto is followed by the parties, the leader of the house and the head of the country. But in our countries, I don’t think we implement or work on 10 percent of whatever we have given within our manifesto.” There was a member of the opposition party also present. Huzooraa made light hearted remarks concerning both the ruling party and opposition to which all members of parliament laughed and enjoyed the remark. Talking to both the opposition and ruling party members, Huzooraa said: “The opposition should not be for the sake of opposition. Wherever you feel that something is good for the nation and it has been presented before the house by the government, the opposition should help them. The government should also see that if the objections raised or the suggestions given by the opposition in any of the bills are good, then you should accept them. This is how you can work amicably and be helpful for the progress of your nation. And I pray that Allah the Almighty gives both of you the opportunity to join hands together and work for the betterment of the nation.” Further, Huzooraa clarified that he was neither with the opposition or the ruling party. Concluding, Huzooraa said, “I pray and wish that African countries emerge as the leaders of world.” Jihad, brotherhood and progress A group also travelled from Senegal for the Jalsa Salana and they also had the chance to sit with Huzooraa. Upon being asked about how they found the Jalsa Salana by Huzooraa, one member replied by saying, “I was very impressed with the Jihad the Jamaat is doing by publishing a great deal of literature about Islam.” Another guest said, “I have been very deeply affected. Wherever we go, people greet us with great brotherhood”. One guest had attended the Jalsa Salana UK twelve years ago. Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa asked him what difference he felt this year. Passionately, he replied, “It is as if I am experiencing a dream … This year, my faith has increased manifold. The Jamaat is truly progressing”. Delegates from various South American countries also had the opportunity to meet with Huzooraa. An Anglican bishop from Ecuador expressed his sentiments about Jalsa saying that it helped in changing his misconceptions about Islam and that “it was an intellectual experience but with a special spiritual aspect present”. The bishop spoke of the peaceful environment at Jalsa. Upon this, Huzooraa said, “Being a religious leader, I think this is the main thing which needs to be created among those people whom you are leading and this is the behaviour your followers should show. Now, when you are going back, tell them that this is how you can progress.” The minister of religion from Paraguay had only visited the last day of Jalsa Salana. Nevertheless, he said “I am amazed because of the level of commitment of the people working. Most of them are voluntary people and even kids [are] serving water. This is a strong message for us.”

Guests from Kyrgyzstan meet Huzoor in his office at Islamabad
Huzooraa responded and told the minister that this was how one can discipline a nation, by training children from a very young age. A university professor of Islam from Uruguay expressed her desire to work closely with the Jamaat and to establish religious dialogue. Huzooraa advised the professor on possible peace events that can take place in South America amongst various religious communities. Grandson for the service of Islam A large delegation from various other Russian states visited Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa, which included new converts. The first Ahmadi convert of Kazakhstan was present, who said that he wanted to present his grandson (who was also present) for the service of Islam Ahmadiyyat and to be raised with the guidance of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa. Upon this, Huzooraa asked if his grandson would do this out of his own free will. The reply from both the grandson and his grandfather was in the affirmative. Huzooraa acknowledged and appreciated the sentiment of both. One member who has a PhD in philosophy and religion commended Hazrat Khailfatul Masih IV’srh book, Revelation, Rationality, Knowledge and Truth and the connection between science and religion presented within the book. Comparing the Bible and the Holy Quran Members from Argentina travelled for the Jalsa. They too had the opportunity to meet with Huzooraa. One Christian lady said she wanted to know more as she found the Jamaat very interesting. Huzooraa asked her if she was practising her faith, to which she said that she was. Huzoor smiled and replied: “That is good. Whatever religion you hold, you must at least practice it and try to find out the common things in the Bible and the Quran. When you find out, then try to see what is extra in the Quran and what was the need of another book. Increase your knowledge, not to change your religion, but to increase your knowledge.” A lady who works in the press and
communication department for the Argentinian government shared her sentiments to Huzooraa. Emotionally, she said how great her experience was during the Bai‘at ceremony. She said that she wanted to tell everyone about her experience. Another guest described the Jalsa as “one of the most impressive experiences of my life”. He also said that he developed great respect for Huzooraa during his visit this year. A diplomat commended the works of the missionary in Argentina. Ahmadiyyat in Argentina A journalist asked Huzooraa what the plans and projects are within Argentina. Huzooraa replied by saying: “We are new in Argentina. Our mission is in its infancy in Argentina. Our message is the message of love, peace and harmony – the message which Islam gives to everyone. It is written in the Holy Quran that you must give your message of love, peace and harmony and let the people understand their duties … whether people join the community or not, people like this message. It is the message the world needs today.” The journalist asked Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa if he planned to visit South America. Huzooraa responded by saying that he does desire to visit South America and that he shall include Argentina when he visits. To various guests, Huzooraa reiterated that though they may not be religious or Muslims, the important point is that everyone is one community and the creation of God – religion puts humanity first. A new convert requested Huzooraa to give him a Muslim name. Upon reflection and asking his own opinion, Huzooraa presented him with the Muslim name, Bashir. Next, French speaking members of parliament and a chief from Burkina Faso came to meet Huzooraa. At the very beginning of the meeting, a member stood up. Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa requested him to take a seat, to which he replied that whenever one
speaks to an elder, he felt that they should stand before them. Huzooraa replied by saying, “I believe a guest should be seated with respect.” The delegation appreciated this gesture from Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa. One guest spoke of the spiritual atmosphere of Jalsa Salana and how he greatly benefitted from Huzoor’saa address. A spell of magic Two delegates from Benin came to meet Huzooraa, one of whom was a member of parliament. Describing Jalsa Salana, the MP said, “It was a great experience and we cannot put it into words … I still cannot understand what magic spell you have that no incident took place.” Huzooraa replied saying, “I believe this discipline will be within our Ahmadis in Benin as well.” The MP expressed that such an event, without the presence of police, is not possible in Benin. Upon this, Huzooraa remarked how it would be possible when Ahmadis organise an event there. The MP said that if this happens, it would be an example for everyone within Benin. Shoulder to shoulder The chief priest of Shinshoji Temple, a Buddhist leader from Japan, congratulated Huzooraa for the new Mubarak Mosque. He said, “Participating in the Jalsa Salana this year, I had previously vowed that I would stand shoulder to shoulder with the aims and objectives of Huzoor.” Further, he added, “The address Huzoor delivered regarding the need for religion and the teachings of the Quran, I will myself implement”. He also commended the efforts by Hazrat Sir Zafrulla Khanra, the first foreign minister of Pakistan and president of the International Court of Justice, for his efforts towards Japan after WWII. The Buddhist leader also took advice from Huzooraa regarding a third world war and politics concerning Japan. “Once a friend, always a friend” The chief emir of Niger State (within Nigeria) met with Huzooraa, accompanied by his family. He thanked Huzooraa for the invitation to Jalsa Salana and commended

6 the mission of the Ahmadiyya Jamaat in Niger State. He said that seven years ago, he made the intention to visit Jalsa Salana and now, he finally made it. The emir acknowledged that his misconceptions about Ahmadis not being Muslims vanished after observing the Jalsa Salana and hearing the recitation of the Quran, listening to speeches about the Holy Prophetaa and the salutations of Salaam he heard at the Jalsa. Huzooraa extended the offer of friendship to the emir, which pleased the emir very much. Huzooraa commented by saying, “We believe, once a friend, always a friend”. The emir said he wants to visit in the future and understand the Jamaat further. The emir also requested Huzoor to lead silent prayer for them. Huzooraa accepted and raised his hands for dua. “Love for all, hatred for none” A member from the government of Haiti met with Huzooraa. He conveyed salutations from members of the Haiti government. Speaking of the Jalsa, he said, “I thank you for the speeches you delivered, in particular, the topics of those addresses. At this Jalsa, I have gained a lot of knowledge about the Jamaat. I will go back and tell the government about the efforts the Ahmadiyya Community is exerting for humanity.” Further, he said, “The Ahmadiyya Jamaat will surely spread in Haiti due to its motto of ‘Love for all, hatred for none.’” In response, Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa said that politicians must exert effort in spreading this motto and once this is achieved, the populace will gain trust within them. The best of humanity A government spokesperson and a regional governor from The Gambia had the opportunity to meet Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa. When asked about their views on Jalsa, the government spokesperson said, “I described the gathering as ‘The best of humanity gathering.’” “Very impressive”, and “very inspirational” were some of the words used by the spokesperson to describe Jalsa. He further voiced that he was not Guests from Jamaat USA in the company of Hazrat Amirul Momineen

surprised with the great discipline and organisation of the Jalsa as he was a former student of Nusrat High School, a school of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat. Hearing this, Huzooraa smiled and commented, saying, “So you know how we Ahmadis work?” The member of government spoke highly of his schooling experience and the values he was taught by Ahmadi teachers. Talking of the Jamaat’s impact, he said, “We are deeply touched by the Jamaat’s impact on Gambia and on Gambians, from health to education, psychologically, sociologically and spiritually.” A considerably large delegation from the USA who attended Jalsa Salana also had the opportunity to meet Huzooraa. The large group consisted of men, women and children. Huzooraa first asked the women about their sentiments regarding Jalsa Salana. Various women expressed their positive experiences of Jalsa Salana. Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa also listened to the impressions of the men as well. A convert said that the hospitality of Jalsa Salana UK is like the USA Jalsa, “but it’s much more special being here with you Huzoor”, he said. A young convert told Huzooraa that he was accepted into Jamia Ahmadiyya Canada and desired to become a missionary. In response, Huzooraa told
him to be determined to never leave Jamia until he completes his course. During the mulaqat, Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa also gifted pens to the students within the delegation. A large delegation from Ghana also met with Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa, consisting of men and women. Huzooraa said that the meeting would start with the sentiments of the women first, followed by the men. As with all groups, Huzooraa asked the gathering whether they liked Jalsa Salana and what their impressions were. The ladies gave positive feedback and took the opportunity to request for prayers from Huzooraa. The men also introduced themselves. Some, Huzooraa had recognised from his years in Ghana prior to Khilafat. The men also took the opportunity to seek prayers from Huzooraa and expressed their positive sentiments. How to improve Chanda Answering a question about how to improve Chanda contributors, Huzooraa advised: “You should not force [members of the Jamaat], just ask them and tell them of the importance of financial sacrifice … Reach out to them personally and make them realise the importance of financial sacrifice.”
Huzooraa also said that those earning less are usually the better Chanda payers compared to those with a steady income, therefore a plan should be made to encourage those who lapse in paying Chanda. One delegate enthusiastically said that he was a student at a school in Salaga when Huzooraa was headmaster. Another large delegation included those from Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. The meeting started with Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa asking the ladies to present any questions or share sentiments. One lajna member took advice on how to organise Ijtemas with the refugee crisis present in Thailand, Huzooraa advised to hold small regional Ijtemas with the purpose of training members. The standard of purdah Answering a question regarding the standard of purdah, Huzooraa said that the Quran should be followed and modesty is key. The head and bosoms must be covered, but at the same time, lower dresses should be very modest and cover the legs. Huzooraa said that if someone is not observing purdah, they cannot be office-bearers. Only those who observe purdah can be in the amilas. The only Muslim leader to spread the true Islam A non-Ahmadi professor of Islamic Studies also came with the delegation. He expressed his happiness to meet Huzooraa for the second time. He also spoke of how he teaches the true teachings of Ahmadiyyat to his students. He had also written a thesis on Ahmadiyyat in western Java. The professor described the Jalsa as “incredible”. Addressing Huzooraa, he said, “I think you are the only one of the spiritual leaders now who will spread out the true Islam all over the world.” Huzooraa advised him to tell this to his colleagues when he returns to his country. The professor also desired for Indonesian journalists to come to Jalsa Salana and report on the true facts about Ahmadi Islam. Huzooraa encouraged the professor to use his influence and make such arrangements, while also advising the Jamaat of Indonesia to pursue inviting journalists. The professor passionately said that he would inform journalists and would further write about the Jamaat. During the meeting, Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa listened to the views of members regarding Jalsa Salana and answered any questions they had. Pens were graciously gifted by Huzooraa to the students present. On 7 August, a new convert from the Cayman Islands had the opportunity to meet with Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa. At the beginning of the mulaqat, Huzooraa asked when this lady accepted Ahmadiyyat. She replied that she had accepted in March 2019. Huzooraa then asked what she thought of the Jalsa to which she replied that she was very much inspired by the Bai‘at and Huzoor’s Friday Sermon. Enquiring about the career she wanted to pursue in the future, she replied by saying that she had two things in mind – law or marketing. Hearing this, Huzooraa replied, “I recommend you study law, then human rights law and then practice women’s

rights.” After this, Huzooraa graciously gifted her with a pen. The true essence of Islam An inspector of religious affairs and a government official from Cameroon had a meeting with Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa on 7 August. Huzooraa asked how they found the UK Jalsa, to which the inspector of religious affairs stated that this Jalsa, being an international Jalsa, captured the true image and essence of Islam and that in this day and age, there is a dire need of a leader who can guide all the Muslims to the true Islam. He further expressed that after seeing how well organised the Jalsa was, it was as if the Holy Prophetsa is among us. He then said, after seeing the way everyone was treating each other, it was as if it is only the Ahmadis who are acting upon the true teachings of Islam. Alluding to Huzoor’s speeches, he stated that he wished to have a copy of all of them so that he can go back and tell his people back at home. Upon this, Huzoor answered in the affirmative and stated, “You shall receive them translated into the French language.” Huzooraa thanked the guest for coming and said, “May Allah bless you.” Huzooraa further stated, “All that you have seen here at Jalsa is the true Islam, which the rest of the Muslims today have forgotten.” Huzooraa added, “I pray that all Muslims over the world be those who act upon the true teachings of Islam.” Huzooraa then turned to other guests and asked about the Jalsa. A lady expressed her positive views about Ahmadiyyat and the Jalsa. A Muslim group from Bosnia and a guest also had the opportunity to meet with Huzoor. At the start, Huzooraa asked if they all enjoyed the UK Jalsa. Upon this, one person, who had attended the Germany Jalsa before, stated that the UK Jalsa was entirely different. He further expressed that this was his third Jalsa. Huzoor then said, “In Germany we have a ready-made facility that we utilise for Jalsa, whereas here we have to create a village ourselves.” Huzooraa then advised them that, as Muslims, if we remember our purpose and the Islamic teachings, we can then spread the true Islam. Huzooraa then gifted two children who were present with chocolates and pens. Selfless service for humanity A representative of the president of Liberia met with Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa. The guest expressed his gratitude towards Huzooraa for the invitation and stated that he was going to take back a very positive message to his country. He stated that he wished every religion preached peace like the Ahmadiyya Community. He further stated that even in his own country, the services the Ahmadiyya Community was rendering was very good. Huzooraa remarked, “They are there for the service of humanity, not to earn money.” He then requested Huzooraa to pray for the country as the president is a young man and the country’s economy is not so good. Upon this, Huzoor prayed, “Allah bless your country; Allah bless your government; Allah give them the strength to serve the nation with all their potential

and capabilities so that they prosper. And Allah let the people understand their duty towards their government.” At the end, Huzooraa thanked the guest for coming and said, “Extend my greetings and well wishes to your president.” A one-to-one address A journalist from Albania had the opportunity to meet with Huzooraa. In the meeting, Huzooraa asked the journalist what he thought of the Jalsa. Upon this, the journalist stated that he was very much impressed with Huzoor’s speech on the first day. He further stated that it did not feel as if Huzoor was addressing all members but as if it was a one-on-one personal address. The journalist said that when he came here, he saw the slogan “Love for all, hatred for none” and further said that after listening to Huzoor’s speech, he felt that this was not a slogan but a philosophy. A delegation from Brazil had the opportunity to meet with Huzoor. At the start of the mulaqat, Huzooraa enquired how they were. Upon this, one guest, whilst thanking Huzoor for the invitation, expressed his feelings saying that it was a very emotional experience and said that this Jalsa would change his life for the better. Lifetime friendship One guest from Brazil expressed his gratitude towards the Jamaat and the message the Ahmadiyya Community is spreading. He then thanked Huzooraa for his leadership and further went on to invite Huzooraa to Brazil as a sign of gratitude. Upon this, Huzoor stated, “Insha-Allah, we will try to make a plan.” Huzooraa further stated, “Once we extend the hand of friendship, we don’t turn back.” Upon this, the guest said that he would hold onto this friendship for his entire life. Leaders and subjects Another guest, who is a journalist, stated that he was very impressed to see how organised the Jalsa was and to see so many people from different walks of life happily
together. He further requested Huzooraa to give a message to the people of his country. Upon this, Huzooraa stated, “The message is this: There are two types of people, leaders and the people. Islam’s teaching regarding leadership is that the leader of the nation should serve the nation.” Huzooraa further stated, “It is necessary for people to follow the policies raised by the government and to also work towards the betterment of the country.” A group on new converts from Mexico had a mulaqat with Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa. During the mulaqat, Huzooraa asked the new converts what they thought of the UK Jalsa. Upon this, one guest replied that he was very much impressed and said that he had no words to express how he felt. Another guest, whilst exhibiting his gratitude said that he was very thankful to Huzooraa and to all those involved in making the Jalsa. He further stated that the most iconic thing was the international Bai‘at. Near the end of the mulaqat, Huzooraa said, “May Allah increase you all in faith and certainty. And may you all go back and preach the true teachings of Islam, and may your actions be in line with its teachings.” A group from Latin America had the opportunity to meet with Huzooraa. One guest said that this was their fourth visit to the UK Jalsa and the last time she visited was year before. Upon this, Huzooraa asked if she saw any difference. The guest answered by saying that there was a huge difference, which she was unable to express through words. A new name One Muslim guest named Carlos requested Huzooraa if he could give him an Islamic name. Upon this, Huzoor asked what the meaning of Carlos was. Hearing this, another guest said that its equivalent in English is Charlie. Huzooraa then graciously named him Khalid and said, “Khalid means something which remains forever.” Huzooraa then prayed, “May your faith remain strong forever.”
The guests expressed their views of Jalsa and said that they really enjoyed listening to Huzoor’s speeches and said that it was completely different to the Islam portrayed in the media. The role of Ahmadiyyat in Islam A group of Ahmadis from Mayotte Island and a journalist had the opportunity to meet with Huzooraa. In the beginning of the mulaqat, Huzooraa enquired from the Ahmadi family what they did. Huzooraa then gifted all guests with a pen each. During the mulaqat, the journalist said she had a few questions she wished to ask. The first question she asked was how Islam Ahmadiyyat is different to other sects of Islam. Upon this Huzooraa stated, “This is the same Islam that was brought by the Holy Prophetsa and the same teaching revealed to the Holy Prophetsa.” Huzooraa further stated: “Islam means peace, not extremism. It was prophesied by the Prophetsa of Islam that in the latter days, with the passage of time, the true teachings of Islam would be forgotten by the majority of Muslims and clerics and scholars would try to make their own interpretations of the Holy Quran. At the time, the Promised Reformer would come, who we believe is the Promised Messiahas, and the guided one and will revive the true teachings of Islam.” Huzooraa then stated, “So, we have accepted that man who was the founder of the Ahmadiyya Community … This is the main difference.” This is just a glimpse into the busy schedule and countless engagements of Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa after Jalsa Salana UK 2019. Aside from these mulaqats, personal mulaqats have been held in the evenings almost daily since Jalsa, and many other events have taken place. May Allah bless the health and schedule of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa and may we all assist him in carrying the name of Islam towards victory and triumph.

Ahmadiyya mission news The Review of Religions, August & September 1919
England Chaudhry Fateh Mohammad Sayal and Mr Abdul Rahim Nayyar who left Qadian for England in the middle of July last, reached London on 6 August 1919. For the present their activities are confined to the lines already followed by our missionaries. But they are now thinking of improving on the present method of preaching, and it is hoped that they, being fresh, will commence their work on some improved lines with increased knowledge, experience and enthusiasm. They mean to open an agency there and start a weekly paper for the purpose of giving religious instruction to the new converts. They have already made some converts there and it is reported that a Nigerian Prince has recently been converted to Islam through the efforts of Mr Abdul Rahim Nayyar. Another important convert is Mr Sagar Chand, Bar-at-Law, who has made up his mind to devote his life to the service of Islam. We are glad to note that the new converts in England have begun to contribute their quotes to the mission funds like other
Ahmadis. Qazi Abdulla will soon come back to Qadian and Mufti Muhammad Sadiq has been instructed to proceed to West Africa. His travelling expenses have been paid by Mr Pedru of Nigeria. Mr Sayal will lead the Ahmadia propaganda in London after Mufti Muhammad Sadiq leaves for Africa.

on addressing misconceptions about Islam in the West. The event was hosted to provide non-Ahmadi Urdu speaking guests an opportunity to ask questions. Representative of the Markaz at Jalsa Salana Canada, Additional Nazir Islaho-Irshad (for Dawat ilallah) and Mufti of the Ahmadiyya Jamaat, Mubashar Ahmad Kahlon Sahib presided the session. He was accompanied by National Amir Canada, Lal Khan Malik Sahib. The programme started with the recitation of the Holy Quran by Hafiz Ali Murtaza Sahib followed by a poem by Sarmad Naveed Sahib. Mubashar Kahlon Sahib welcomed all those present and provided a brief introduction of the Ahmadiyya Movement in Islam. After the introduction, guests were provided an opportunity to ask questions. Answers were given by Kahlon Sahib for almost two hours. Some of the topics covered included:

Nigeria Mr Abdul Rahim Smith reached Qadian on the morning of the last Eid-ul-Adha. He means to stay here for 4 or 5 years and return to his native country as an Ahmadi Missionary. He has already begun his studies in right earnest. Although no Ahmadi missionary has yet set his foot on Nigerian soil, yet, through God’s grace, we have a regular Anjuman there with about 60 members. East Africa The Ahmadiyya Association, Nairobi, presented the following address to His Excellency the Governor of British East Africa and it has been published in some of the daily papers of that country: “May [it] please your Excellency, “We, on behalf of the Ahmadiyya
Moslem Association of Nairobi, the entire Ahmadiyya Community of British East Africa, desire, though rather late owing to certain unavoidable circumstances, to bid Your Excellency and family the most hearty welcome and offer sincerest congratulations upon the honour bestowed upon Your Excellency by His Most Gracious Majesty The King Emperor for your meritorious services in connection with the world-war. “We are sure your Excellency is not unaware of the great movement to which we belong. The Founder of our Ahmadiyya Movement was the late Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian, Punjab, the Blessed Messenger of the Latter Days whose advent was foretold by almost all the prophets of the world. His present and second successor is His Holiness Hazrat Mirza Basheerud Deen Mahmood Ahmad; the First Successor being Hazrat Maulvi Noorud Deen who died in 1914. “Among the grievous errors which the said Messenger or the Promised Messiah found prevailing among the Moslems were the doctrines of Ghaziizm [the movement of Ghazis who swore to destroy all infidels • How to unite the Muslim Ummah • Khatm-e-Nabuwwat • The death of Jesusas • Coming of the Promised Messiahas • Terrorism • General questions Out of the 250 in attendance, 125 were nonAhmadi guests who all benefitted from the programme. Below are some of the comments shared by the guests: “Very powerful and well-organised programme. The person who was answering the questions was … very knowledgeable and wise. He answered questions very appropriately and eloquently.” (Buhawinder Singh) “The food was very good. Good gathering. I wanted to [personally] meet Mubashar Kahlon Sahib … to get further clarifications on my questions.” (Aftab
in age] and bloody Mahdi. He saw that the most revolting of crimes were committed in the name of religion. The belief in such a doctrine commonly known as “Jehad” was so very rampant among the entire Moslem World that to wage war against non-Moslems was held to be a means of salvation. The Promised Messiah from the very beginning of his career to the end of his days worked hard to weed out this deep-rooted evil. The result of his efforts was marvelous. Not only those who accepted him as the Promised Messiah and Mahdi (and they are counted by hundreds of thousands residing in the various parts of the world) abandoned these doctrines – but so reasonable and powerful was his refutation of these erroneous beliefs that all sensible men, among his opponents, realised the absurdity of “Ghaziizm and Jehad.” The Movement founded by him has been and is doing its level best to spread these doctrines throughout the Moslem world not only in India but also in Afghanistan, Persia, Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, etc. “Two of his followers were put to a most horrible death by the late Amir and his father in Kabul for their preaching against Ghazi Mahdi and the doctrine of ‘Jehad’. The Promised Messiah who was the recipient of Divine revelations prophesied that the late Amir and his accomplices shall meet with a horrible fate as a punishment for their tyrannical act and we have today seen the fulfilment of this grand prophecy to the very letter, Amir Habibullah Khan having been shot dead in a similar cruel manner. “We cannot help adding here a few words regarding some of the hundreds of prophecies regarding the Partition of Bengal, the defeat of Russia and the annexation of Korea by Japan. The Persian Revolution, the outbreak of plague in India, occurrence of earthquakes of unparalleled severity in diverse parts of the earth, the defeat of Turks in Thrace and their subsequent victory over Bulgarians, the downfall and death of Dr Dowie, the false prophet of America, etc., and many still await fulfilment. He published a very remarkable prophecy in 1905 regarding the late world-war which has been fulfilled to the very letter. (Please refer to pamphlet, Mighty Signs). His warnings and prophecy regarding the prevalence of the present mysterious disease in Europe and other Christian countries are also Malhi) “I always attend programmes arranged by Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya. I really appreciate your organisation, discipline and brotherhood. This attitude always pushes me to come and attend these programs.” (Mian Mudassir) “The programme was very informative, composed, decent and organised. I always love to attend these programmes. I always attend the Jalsa Salana. Today’s programme was very special as it was very knowledgeable … Please do invite me in such programs in future.” (Major Syed Javed Bukhari) The programme was live-streamed for the benefit of those who could not attend. A bookstore and Holy Quran exhibition were setup for the guests to visit and socialise. The event concluded with dinner, followed by Maghrib and Isha prayers. May Allah open the hearts of all the guests and enable us to continue to spread the message of Islam in the best possible manner. Amin.

Friday 16 August 2019 | AL HAKAM worthy of note: ‘Thou, O Europe! art not safe, nor thou O Asia; and ye that dwell in islands, no selfmade deity will assist you on that day. The omnipotent God has kept silent for a long time while detestable deeds were done in His sight; now He will show His face with great awe. Let him who has ears hear that that time is not distant.’ (1905) ‘In Europe and other Christian countries there will appear a kind of plague which will be very severe.’ (13 March 1907) “His teachings, inter alia, enjoin upon the Moslems in general and Ahmadis in particular the duty of loyalty to the British Government. He always dwelt upon the numerous blessings of the British Rule and declared it a sin to be disloyal to the Government. As for his own followers, he made loyalty to the British Government as one of the conditions of Baiat (initiation into the Movement). The result is that every Ahmadi thinks loyalty to the Crown as part of his religion. It may also be noted that Ahmad’s teachings demand loyalty not only to the British Government but also to every other Government under which an Ahmadi may happen to live. “We beg to assure your Excellency of our loyal cooperation with the Government. “We have much pleasure in presenting Your Excellency with a copy of each of the following books of our propaganda with the earnest hope that Your Excellency will be pleased to accept them: i. English Translation of the Holy Quran Part I ii. The Teachings of Islam iii. Mighty Signs of the Living God “We Ahmadis by reason of being staunch adherents to these teachings and consequently keeping aloof from all kind of agitation are sometimes persecuted and placed under various disabilities by those differing from us in our convictions. We do not, however, propose to dwell on these in the present address, as it would make it unnecessarily long and therefore close this humble address with a fervent prayer to Almighty Allah that Your Excellency’s term of office in the Protectorate may be crowned with that remarkable success which your activities have achieved in other spheres and that Your Excellency and family may enjoy continual good health and happiness during
Your Excellency’s stay in the Protectorate. “We, beg to remain, Your Excellency’s most obedient servants. Sultan Mahmud Khan, President Ahmadiyya Association, Nairobi. he Charity Walk for Peace has become an annual event in Majlis Ansarullah UK’s calendar for many years. This year, the event was held on Sunday, 30 June 2019 in Milton Keynes starting at the MK Dons Stadium. There were two scenic routes to cater for the different age-groups of walkers. One
Mauritius The Mosque case between Ahmadis and non-Ahmadis is going on as before and about 2,500 rupees have already been spent by Anjuman Ahmadiyya Mauritius. An interesting feature of the case is that the points of difference between Ahmadis and non-Ahmadis, such as the natural death of Jesus and the claims of the Promised Messiah are being discussed at great length and these discussions naturally draw large audiences. Thus, whatever the result of the case may be, the proceedings are serving at least one good purpose. They are serving as a means for propagating Ahmadiyya doctrines in the island of Mauritius. Three Mauritius students are at present studying at Qadian. Egypt Brother Abdul Karim Khan and his friends are very earnestly engaged in propagating Ahmadiyya doctrines. They have recently published a tract in Arabic explaining the distinguishing doctrines of the Ahmadiyya movement. The language is very simple and the message of the Promised Messiah (peace be with his soul) has been successfully conveyed to the people of Egypt. Ceylon Our Ceylon brethren are very energetically busy is the propagation of Ahmadiyya doctrines. Their enthusiasm, zeal and sincerity can be measured by the fact that they have recently sent six young men from their country to receive instruction at Qadian. When they left Ceylon, one of our Ceylon brethren wrote to Hazrat Khalifatul Masih, saying: “We are fully alive to the interest Your Holiness takes in the cause of the Ceylon
Ahmadis and we trust you will kindly pray for the safety, welfare and success of the six students who are leaving Ceylon today.” Four of them have been admitted in the TI High School and the rest are being taught Urdu. It is proposed that a regular teacher be appointed to teach Urdu, Arabic and other subjects to all those who come from foreign countries to study and learn Islam at Qadian. Australia Mr Hasan Musa Khan writes: “Non-Ahmadi Christian friends are kind enough to publish my articles in their esteemed papers while the non-Ahmadi Musalmans are so bitterly opposed to the Ahmadiyya movement that they do not even allow me to enter their mosques. For the former I pray and for the latter my heart deeply mourns.” Among other papers, he sends a cutting from the Register, Adelaide, dated Monday, 21 July 1919, containing an article from his pen, entitled Peace and Prophecy. India Maulvi Ghulam Rasul Rajeki was sent on a preaching mission to Malabar where he remained for about four or five months. And it is a great pleasure to note that the mission has been entirely successful. In spite of illness and severe pain, the learned Maulvi carried on the sacred work with unwearied zeal and enthusiasm. He was lecturing, preaching and teaching even from his bed of sickness and we are glad to note that he succeeded in making 50 new converts there. For the better organisation of propaganda work Hazrat Khalifatul Masih has ordered that missionary secretaries be appointed in every Ahmadia Anjuman, whose duty will be to make proper arrangements for the propagation of Ahmadiyya doctrines and to send regular reports about the work carried on in their respective districts and to help the Nazir Talif-o-lshaat (secretary for propagation) in his work. To strengthen the financial status of the missionary department it has been proposed to open different kinds of commercial agencies in big cities and some of the principal firms in the country have been consulted on the point and it is hoped that the work will soon be started on some suitable lines.

Friday 16 August 2019 | AL HAKAM Responding to Allegations
Do members of the Ahmadiyya Jamaat perform Hajj?
lobal media continues to cover the Hajj season in the Holy house of G Ka‘bah, located in Mecca. The weekly Al
Hakam has already published a series of brief articles on this subject in its recent issue. In the coming lines, we will discuss a widespread misconception by the opponents of the Jamaat that its members supposedly do not perform Hajj in Mecca and they do not give precedence to the journey of traveling to this most sacred place for Muslims. It is reported that the Promised Messiahas used to receive guests and sometimes, he would simply uncover his forearms while talking to them. By doing so, in a very effective and subtle manner, he used to refute a false allegation leveled against him by his opponents, which was that his skin had been damaged due to leprosy or similar ailments. The Promised Messiahas could have made a long speech like his rivals, but instead, he plainly made his point by only presenting the reality. Following this method, we present below short accounts of Hajj performed by members of the Jamaat. Hazrat Hakim Maulvi Nuruddinra had the blessed opportunity to travel to the holy land in Arabia as a student. There, he performed Hajj more than once. Hazrat Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmud Ahmadra embarked on his Hajj journey from Qadian on 26 September 1912. He went along with his maternal grandfather,
Hazrat Mir Nasir Nawabra and Syed Abdul Muhy Arabra. The details of this long journey spanning many months are so faith-inspiring and captivating that one remains engaged till they finish reading this lengthy account. Hazrat Chaudhry Sir Muhammad Zafrulla Khanra performed Hajj as the special guest of the Saudi Shah Faisal in 1967. Before this, in March 1958, Sir Zafarulla Khan Sahibra performed Umrah and, at the same time, visited the shrine of the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa in Medina, Saudi Arabia. During his visit, he met with the King Ibn Saud of Saudi Arabia, and stayed at the Royal Palace as a personal guest of the king. Later, in 1967, he performed Hajj, a religious duty that must be carried out at least once in a lifetime by every ablebodied Muslim who can afford to do so. Once, Sir Zafarulla Khan Sahibra recalled his parents’ Hajj journey, saying: “In the summer of 1924, my parents went on the pilgrimage to the House of Allah. They took with them Mian Jumman, the family steward. The sea voyage in both directions was made in the monsoon season. My father suffered greatly from sea-sickness, but my mother enjoyed every moment thoroughly. At Mina and Arafat, there was a great scarcity of drinking water that year and the pilgrims experienced acute circumstances for that reason. Thousands died of thirst. “The news caused me grave anxiety, which was relieved only by their safe return. My mother had taken with her the sheets that were to serve as shrouds for my father and herself at the time of their departure
from the world. She washed them with the water of Zam Zam, the perennial spring that runs close to the Ka‘bah. Two years later, they used that sheet for my father and for my mother, twelve years later. The journey left my father in a reduced state of health.” Among the martyrs of the Lahore massacre on 28 May 2010 was Mian Muhammad Saeed Sahib, who is reported to have performed Hajj about six times in his life. Al-Haj Muhammad Abdul Hadi Italo Chiussi, an orientalist from Germany and translator of the Holy Quran into Espranto language visited Mecca and Medina, went to Qadian and travelled to Jalsa Salana Rabwah in 1970. His travelogue, containing his spiritual experiences during his visit to the holy city of Mecca was much loved by Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmadrh. The Jamaat’s rich history expands more than a century. To cover this vast period of time, two examples are presented from both ends to show the importance of Mecca and Medina, i.e. from 1885 to 2019. On 19 September 1885, which was 9 Dhul Hijjah 1302 AH, Hazrat Sufi Ahmad Jan Sahib read out a prayer in the field of Arafat, which was written by the Promised Messiahas. In the early days of this year, when Hazrat Sufi Sahib was about to embark on Hajj, the Promised Messiahas wrote down a prayer and asked him to read it upon witnessing the veil of the Ka‘bah. The wording and gist of this prayer shows his steadfastness, righteousness and love for the revival of Islam. Most recently, upon the inauguration of the Mubarak Mosque in Islamabad, Tilford, the worldwide head of the Ahmadiyya Jamaat, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmadaa prayed: “May the journey to Mecca and Medina – the home of our guide and master, the Holy Prophetsa and the permanent headquarters of Islam – be made accessible for us. May the people living there receive the true message of Islam and may they accept it and attest to the truth of the Ardent Devotee of the Holy Prophetsa. May God Almighty enlighten all those who harbour prejudice [against Ahmadiyyat] owing to their ignorance and may He hold all those accountable who are instilling hatred amongst the people against Ahmadiyyat only because of their hatred and to fulfil their agendas.” Hence, it is clearly evident that the first two Khulafa of the Promised Messiahas had the blessed opportunity to perform Hajj before they were commissioned with the successorship of the mission of the Holy Founder of the Jamaat. Surely, that day will soon arrive when the esteemed Khalifa of the Promised Messiahas shall lead the Hajj congregations. Insha-Allah!
9th Jalsa Salana Kosovo Jinahuddin Saif Missionary and President AMJ Kosovo
On Sunday, 16 June 2019, Jamaat-eAhmadiyya Kosovo held its 9th Jalsa Salana in its capital city, Prishtina. Kosovo is a self-declared independent country in the Balkans region of Europe and the United States of America and most members of the European Union (EU) recognised Kosovo’s declaration of independence from Serbia in 2008. Kosovo has an estimated population of around 2 million. In Kosovo there are three main religions – Islam, Orthodoxy and Catholicism. Muslims fill the majority with 95.6%. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat officially settled in Kosovo in 2001 with a total of 200 local members. This year, for Jalsa Salana, 138 men and 80 women attended, along with 218 guests. Among the participants were guests that had travelled from all over Kosovo, guests from neighbouring Albania, guests from Macedonia and the UK. Representatives also attended from Germany. The speeches delivered at Jalsa Salana were well-prepared and subjects were explained in an apt manner. Friday 16 August 2019 | AL HAKAM more effective for that than Salat.” (Malfuzat, Vol. 2, p. 681)
does exist. What is that? It is the recipe called Salat.” (Malfuzat, Vol. 9, p. 20)
Salat and inheritance of heavenly blessings
Salat, faith and worldly matters
“Salat is an instrument for security against sins. It is a characteristic feature of Salat that it drives one away from sin and evil deeds. Therefore, seek that sort of Salat and try to mould your Salats accordingly. Salat is the essence of blessings. Favours of Allah are attained through Salat. Therefore, perform it decently that you may inherit Allah’s blessings.” (Malfuzat, Vol. 3, p. 103) Salat is a vehicle “For the one who wants to meet Allah and desires to reach His court, Salat is the vehicle by which he can get there quicker. He who abandons Salat cannot reach there.” (Malfuzat, Vol. 3, p. 189)
Iqamatus-Salat
(Observance of Prayer) Part V
Key to supplication
A brief selection of blessed quotations of the Promised Messiahas and his Khulafa Ataul Mujeeb Rashed Missionary-in-Charge UK
Sayings of the Promised Messiah and Imam Mahdias
Salat and peace “The greatest criterion of man’s pious life is Salat. He, who keeps crying out to God in Salat, lives in peace.” (Malfuzat, Vol. 1, p. 402) Offering Salat on time
Regularity in prayers “Offer prayers with commitment to regularity. Some people offer only one of the daily prayers. They should remember that there is no exemption from prayers.” (Malfuzat, Vol. 1, p. 172) Essence of Salat “Salat definitely and surely dispels evils. Salat is not just going through certain postures. The essence of Salat is the supplication that has pleasure and bliss in it.” (Malfuzat, Vol. 1, p. 103) Fervency in prayer “Fervency is essential in Salat. Unless the heart is lit with intense fervour, one does not get pleasure and bliss in Salat.” (Malfuzat, Vol. 1, p. 287)
“By nature, I like that Salat be offered at its prescribed time and this question of Salat on time is very dear to me. Even when it is raining heavily, I wish to offer Salat on time.” (Malfuzat, Vol. 2, p. 45) Make your Salat decent “Man can never achieve nearness to Allah without practicing iqam-e-Salat (observance of Salat). He ordered aqeemussalat (observe prayer) because Salat tends to falter and those who comply with iqamussalat they benefit from its spiritual form.… I have admonished my Jama’at to offer Salat decently and that too is supplication.” (Malfuzat, Vol. 2, p. 346) A believer’s treasure trove
“Being inclined to someone other than Allah is to break away from Him … Salat is indeed the name of practical affirmation of the unity of God.” (Malfuzat, Vol. 1, p. 107)
“Salat is a treasure trove of supplications granted to a believer … People do not value Salat these days and have thus distanced themselves from Allah. Salat is a pinnacle [mir‘aj] of the believer and from that does he get satisfaction of heart.” (Malfuzat, Vol. 2, p. 348)
Salat – The best educator
Salat and life
“Salat is the best educator and the most excellent means of teaching perfect servitude … Be dutiful to Salat in such a way that, not only your body or tongue, but also all the intentions and passions of your soul entirely become Salat.” (Malfuzat, Vol. 1, p. 108)
“Salat, in fact, is a supplication to the Lord of Glory, without which one cannot survive nor get security and happiness.” (Malfuzat, Vol. 2, p. 615)
Affirmation of unity of God
Man’s talisman “Salat is man’s talisman. It provides opportunity to supplicate five times a day; one of those supplications may well be heard. Therefore, Salat should be offered in a very decent way, and that is what I like so much.” (Malfuzat, Vol. 2, p. 396)
Salat dispels weakness “Salat is the good deed which dispels satanic weakness and that is what we call prayer.” (Malfuzat, Vol. 2, p. 679)
“Salat is the key to acceptance of supplication. When you offer Salat, supplicate during that and do not be unmindful.” (Malfuzat, Vol. 3, p. 222) Best incantation “There is no incantation better than Salat … It dispels all sorts of sorrows and worries and resolves difficulties … In my view, Salat is the best of all incantations; it should be performed properly and decently.” (Malfuzat, Vol. 3, pp. 310-311) Blessings of Salat “The Salat taught by the Holy Prophetsa is that when performing, one joins the abdal [saints], sins part with him, his prayers get accepted and he attains nearness to God.” (Malfuzat, Vol. 4, p. 43) Congregational prayer and unity “Congregational prayer … is for unity so that all those offering Salat be counted as one unit. The philosophy, underlying the instruction that all should stand together, is that those who are more enlightened may strengthen the lesser ones by infusing their light in them … Those from one ward should offer congregational prayers in the mosque of their locality five times a day. That will lead to mutual exchange of morals and intermixing of spiritual light, thereby removing all weaknesses. It will also create fellowship and mutual love … that being the basis for unity.” (Malfuzat, Vol. 4, p. 101) Salat and advancements “Some people achieve such degree of perfection that Salat becomes a kind of food for them … without which they feel severe anguish and restlessness. However, Salat gives them a special joy and comfort. A righteous believer gets pleasure in Salat. Therefore, Salat should be performed in a decent and orderly manner. Salat is the basis and ladder for all spiritual advancements. That is why it is said that Salat is a believer’s pinnacle [mi‘raj].” (Malfuzat, Vol. 4, p. 605) Salat and truth “Salat dispels evils; it has a spirit of truth in it and has an effect of beneficence.” (Malfuzat, Vol. 5, p. 45)
Salat and love of God
Recipe for overcoming difficulties
“Perpetuate love for, and the grandeur of, God in your hearts; and there is nothing
“A complete and unfailing recipe to overcome difficulties and hardships that has been tested by millions of righteous persons
“Salat is such that it puts everything in good shape – the worldly matters as well as faith … By performing Salat, one is saved from all kinds of wrongdoings and immodesty. Therefore, your day and your night, in fact any moment, should not be bereft of prayers.” (Malfuzat, Vol. 5, p. 403) Each and every word of Salat is supplication “Salat, in fact, is supplication. Each and every word that one utters during Salat aims at supplication. One who is not attached to Salat should prepare to face torment. One who does not supplicate brings himself to ruination. A sovereign is announcing repeatedly, ‘I relieve the distressed of their troubles; I resolve their problems; I am very merciful; I help the destitute.’ However, if a person who is in trouble passes by him, does not pay attention to his announcement, nor does he mention his problem to him to seek his help will ruin himself. That is how God is. He is prepared to provide comfort to man all the time only if one pleads for it. For the acceptance of prayer, it is essential that one avoids disobedience and supplicates enthusiastically, because fire is produced only when a flint strikes against another one forcefully.” (Malfuzat, Vol. 4, p. 54) Short quotations “The pleasure of Salat is superior to every worldly pleasure.” (Malfuzat, Vol. 3, p. 592) “Salat dispels thousands of faults and is the means of nearness to God.” (Malfuzat, Vol. 4, p. 292) “Salat is the basis and ladder for all [spiritual] advancements. That is why it is said that Salat is a believer’s pinnacle [mi‘raj].” (Malfuzat, Vol. 4, p. 605) “Salat is the thing that relieves one of all hardships and dispels all misfortunes.” (Malfuzat, Vol. 5, p. 402) “So, offer the five daily prayers in such fear and with such complete attention as though you were actually beholding God Almighty.” (Noah’s Ark, p. 25) “Whosoever does not observe the five daily prayers is not of my community.” (Noah’s Ark, p. 31) “For comfort and peace of mind, there is nothing better than Salat.” (Malfuzat, Vol. 5, p. 402) “In my view, Salat is the best of all incantations.” (Malfuzat, Vol. 3, p. 311) “The real purpose and essence of Salat is supplication.” (Malfuzat, Vol. 1, p. 234)
Sayings of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Ira Effect of Salat on practical life “Offer Salat decently and let the effect of the pledge that you make during Salat be apparent on your practical life. Verbally, you say, ‘Iyyaka na‘budu’, (We are obedient to you), but are you steadfast in obedience? Supplicate and offer Salat; the two are not burdensome for the humble ones.” (Khutabat-e-Nur, pp. 365-366)

Friday 16 August 2019 | AL HAKAM Etiquette of Salat
“Some people are lax in Salat in different ways: 1. They do not arrive on time 2. They do not pray in congregation 3. They are not mindful of Sunnah and Hadith “Listen attentively! Nothing works well in this world for the one who is wasteful of Salat.” (Khutabat-e-Nur, pp. 365-366) Salat – A remedy for sin “Salat restrains from sin and is the remedy to abstain from sin only when offered decently. Wake up from your slumber, seeking salvation, and hasten when you hear the Azan.” (Khutabat-e-Nur, p. 166) Salat – A magnificent thing “After verbal affirmation, Salat is the most magnificent thing; if one wastes that, he has wasted his faith. Truly speaking, therein lies the difference between disbelief [kufr] and Islam.” (Khutabat-e-Nur, p. 281)
Sayings of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IIra Regularity in Salat “Salat is the fountainhead of spirituality and a means of achieving nearness to God. Abstention from Salat is a poison that condemns man to an everlasting hell, thereby subjecting him to death after death. One should save oneself from that and be regular with Salat.” (Mashal-e-Rah, Vol. 1, p. 403) Commitment to Salat “It is our duty to make every member of our Jamaat committed to Salat and try so hard that not even a single member remains deprived of Salat.” (Mashal-e-Rah, Vol. 1, p. 220) Iqamat (observance) of Salat “Iqamat means offering Salat in congregation, that is to say, merely offering Salat is not enough, rather it is essential to pray in congregation … Islam ordains observing Salat, not merely performing it [individually].” (Mashal-e-Rah, Vol. 1, p. 278)
Sayings of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IIIrh
a believer’s life … Try to offer such Salat that pleases Allah, and thereby endears you to Him.” (Khutabat-e-Tahir, Vol. 1, p. 115) Salat and households “I admonish all households that they try, with utmost courage and effort, to create members who offer Salat regularly … The grace of those households wherein prayers are offered regularly will reach the corners of the world. Visitors from far away who stay with them will see a good model to follow … Decorate your houses in this way that they are filled with the worship and remembrance of Allah.” (Khutabat-e-Tahir, Vol. 1, pp. 285-287) Salat and delivering rights “If Salat is observed, the rights of Allah as well as the rights of people will be delivered; otherwise nothing will remain.” (Khutabate-Tahir, Vol. 2, p. 191) Salat and fortitude “Those who perform real Salat have unparalleled qualities of fortitude. When they suffer, the suffering does not prevail on them. They do not lament or bewail.” (Khutabat-e-Tahir, Vol. 2, pp. 377-388)
Sayings of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa Safeguarding Salat “Only guarding and supervising prayers will guarantee to keep us and our future generations free of sins and wrongdoings … If you want to save your children from falling into [these] filthy and obscene practices, then the best way is try to make them regular with prayers.” (Khutabat-eMasroor, Vol. 3, pp. 372-373) Salat and introspection “Each one of us should try to assess continuously that we are not falling short in any way concerning the Salat.” (Mashal-eRah, Vol. 5, Part III, p. 134) Salat and reward “Forcing oneself to get up from the bed and go to the mosque for congregational prayer, attending prayers at the cost of one’s business is what makes one deserving of reward.” (Khutabat-e-Masroor, Vol. 3, p.23) Salat and work
“If one offering long Salat does not abstain from indecency and manifest evil, his Salat would not be true Salat because true Salat restrains one from indecency and manifest evil. (Khutabat-e-Nasir, Vol. 1, p. 314)
“When it is time for Salat, focus your attention fully on prayer as commanded by Allah. Your engagements or other excuses should not stop you from offering prayers. Do not neglect Salat for the sake of your work rather stop your work for the sake of Salat. Otherwise that is also a kind of hidden Shirk.” (Khutbat-e-Masroor, Vol. 3, p. 272)
Salat and real virtue
The middle Salat (Salat-ul-Wusta)
True Salat
“Performing Salat, according to the conditions laid down by Allah, is real virtue.” (Khutabat-e-Nasir, Vol. 1, p. 273)
Sayings of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IVrh Salat and security of life “Make it your habit to offer five daily prayers. That is essential for the security of
“Be watchful over your prayers and ‘the middle one’ as well … Salat, the hour of which approaches when you are preoccupied with worldly engagements, requires special attention. Salat restrains one from indecency … By achieving excellence in Salat, one attains nearness to God and His love, without which he is like a tree that had its root cut off.” (Khutabat-e-Masroor, Vol.6, pp. 281-294) The excellence of worship during youth
Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa states that the Promised Messiahas says: “‘If he spent this period [of his youth] in the worship of Allah, the reformation of the self and obedience to God, he will be so rewarded in his old age, that when he will be unable to perform any worship and indisposition and lethargy will overtake him, the angels will continue to record in his name the same Salat, fasting, Tahajud, etc. which he used to perform in his youth. This is the grace of Allah that considering his disability, despite his failure to do anything, such deeds are recorded in his account’ [Malfuzat, Vol. 4, p. 199]. Thus, every Ahmadi, in a state of health, should try to be regular with their prayers; not only be regular, but they should also pay attention to congregational prayers.” (Khutabat-eMasroor, Vol. 3, p. 24) Pray in congregation “Every Ahmadi, who has accepted the Promised Messiahas, and thereby counts himself to be one of the believers, should pay special attention to these matters. Firstly, strive to offer prayers regularly. As far as possible, try to offer the prayer in congregation. Then, adorn these [obligatory] prayers with voluntary prayers. In the context of Salat, I would like to make another point. Always remember that worship has a great connection with the institution of Khilafat. And what is worship? It is Salat. The verse that follows the divine promise of comfort and Khilafat for the believers, enjoins ‘Aqeemus-Salat’ [observe Salat] as well. Therefore, the first condition to acquire an established position and benefit from the institution of Khilafat is observance of Salat, because it is worship and Salat that will absorb Allah’s grace.” (Khutabat-e-Masroor, Vol. 5, pp. 148-151) Interest and zeal for Salat “These high standards of morality and taqwa [righteousness] cannot be achieved without divine help and guidance. Therefore, we should always seek Allah’s help with prayers. For that, fill up the Salat centres and mosques [with worshippers] in your area. With congregational prayers, not only will you achieve spiritual advancement but will also
set an example for others to follow. Convey this guideline to all the office-bearers who are not present so that they also act upon it. “As for planning to gather the people nearby for prayers, keep this in mind that the plan should be easily practicable. Some office-bearers become so enthusiastic about carrying out their responsibilities that they ignore the ground realities … They should try to maintain interest and zeal for prayers amongst the people and should not be overbearing. The people should be made to realise the need for the virtuous changes to take place in them as Ahmadis that would distinguish them from others. To bring about such positive changes, always pray that they are granted steadfastness.” (Al Fazl International, 6 July 2007, p. 2) Parents’ own example “Another important matter, rather the most important matter, is to inculcate the habit of five daily prayers in the children because faith without worship is no faith. The parents’ own example is most important in this regard. If they are regular with Salat, their children will be regular as well. Otherwise, their hollow words of advice will have no effect on the children.” (Khutabat-eMasroor, Vol. 1, p. 144) Joy and comfort in prayers “If we submit our tearful lamentations to our Lord, He will surely listen to our supplications as promised by Him. First of all, bowing down to Allah the Almighty, we will have to direct our Salat and supplications exclusively to Him; that is the basic thing. If you get joy and comfort in Salat, then you have achieved everything. During the Salat, particularly supplicate in the words that we have been taught by the Holy Prophetsa. According to the Hadith, he used to pray: ‘O Allah, grant my soul its taqwa, and cleanse it thoroughly, and Thou are the best of all who can cleanse it.’ (The heart can only get cleansed by the grace of Allah.) [Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Dhikr]. May Allah grant us the ability to cleanse our hearts!” (Khutabat-e-Masroor, Vol. 2, p. 220)

Global PAAMA Meeting at Jalsa Salana UK 2019
Tommy Kallon President Pan-African Ahmadiyya Muslim Association UK
alsa Salana UK, as an international Jenhance convention, is a unique occasion to spirituality by the magnetic
presence and inspiring addresses of His Holiness, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, Khalifatul Masih V, may Allah be his Helper. This international Jalsa Salana also provides a platform for the global PanAfrican Ahmadiyya Muslim Ahmadiyya (PAAMA) family to get together under the auspices of His Holiness to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood and collectively explore ways of furthering the aims and objectives of the association. With the blessed approval of Hazrat Khalifatul Masihaa the global PAAMA family convened in the main men’s marquee on the evening of Friday, 2 August following the inaugural address of His Holiness. In attendance were delegates from Africa, the Caribbean, North America, Europe and the UK. For the first time this year, PAAMA Lajna held a separate and simultaneous event in the main ladies’ marquee for all female delegates. His Holiness appointed Imam Azhar Haneef Sahib, Naib Amir and Missionary In-charge of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA as the chairman to preside over this year’s event, who called the meeting to order so that proceedings could commence with the recitation of the Holy Quran followed by its translation into English. The first speech on the day was on the Blessings of PAAMA, which was delivered by Imam Ehsan Secundar Sahib, Missionary In-charge Belgium, who recounted the many blessings PAAMA has brought in its wake since its inception under the auspices of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IVrh. Thereafter, a speech was delivered by
the President PAAMA UK, Tommy Kallon Sahib, who addressed the audience on the Challenges Facing PAAMA and stressed on the importance of secular and spiritual education, the need for unity and the exigency for strengthening our bonds with the blessed institution of Khilafat. There ensued an open question and answer session for all the participants, following which Imam Ahzar Haneef delivered pertinent closing remarks in which he quoted from and elaborated on Huzoor’s message to the Africa Peace Symposium 2018, which called on all Africans, wherever in the world they lived, to play a role in the establishment of world peace: “In light of the perilous state of the world, it is the urgent need of the time that people and nations set aside their vested interests and focus all their energies upon establishing peace through justice, compassion and mutual respect. A spirit of selflessness and a genuine desire to alleviate the suffering of others must overcome the selfish greed that has taken root in so much of the world. “Now is the time to put aside our differences and for all people, whether
religious or not, whether rich or poor, to come together and recognise the fact that we are all part of the same human race and united as such. “The African Continent and its people, whether they live in Africa or have moved abroad, have a great role to play in establishing peace in the world. Thus, never underestimate yourselves or the potential of the African people. God Almighty has given the African people many qualities and capabilities and so it is your duty to work hard and fulfil your vast potential. For this, you must always act with justice and serve your nations with integrity and work towards their continued development and advancement. “Recently, I sent a message to a similar event in Ghana where I said that I hoped the African people were the leaders in forming an alliance of peace. I hereby reiterate this message and I hope and pray that African people, wherever in the world they live, set a positive example for the rest of the world by establishing the highest standards of morality and justice. May the African people be the leaders in developing true peace in the world.” (Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, Khalifatul Masih Vaa, 27 October 2018) The programme on the Lajna side began with a welcome address by Mrs Faosat Sanni, PAAMA UK Lajna President after Tilawat and translation. This was followed by a speech on My Journey to Ahmadiyyat by Haja Fatimah Demba Sahiba, an Ahmadi convert. Short speeches from the various country representatives were then delivered to the audience. Both parallel meetings concluded with silent prayers, before dinner was served to the attendees. The attendance on the men’s side was in the region of 400 and the ladies’ attendance was a little over 300. May Allah bless PAAMA to work in accordance with the directives of Hazrat Khalifatul Masihaa. Amin
Waqf-e-Arzi trip to the UK for Jalsa Salana 2019 Anwer Mahmood Khan USA Correspondent
27 Khuddam from across the USA embarked on a journey to the UK to work day and night in waqar-e-amal to help set up for Jalsa Salana UK. Khuddam-ul-Ahmadiyya of various ages took time away from their routines to help prepare Hadeeqatul Mahdi for the upcoming Jalsa Salana UK. Wherever help was needed, the Khuddam from USA were ready. Among many tasks, they installed heavy power cables, helped with setting up the Jalsa Gah and stage, built a plinth for the MTA exhibition, and arranged tables and chairs in the VIP marquee. In the evenings, the Khuddam had the blessed opportunity to pray behind beloved Huzooraa at Masjid Mubarak, Islamabad. Some even had the honour to offer duties at the entrance of Masjid Mubarak. After the concluding session of Jalsa, Huzooraa graciously allotted time for a group picture with the Khuddam. It was an amazing experience that left all the Khuddam wanting to return next year. The Khuddam built lasting friendships, increased brotherhood, and most importantly, strengthened their connection with Almighty Allah and with Khilafat. Majlis Khuddam-ul-Ahmadiyya USA would like to thank all the missionaries and nazimeen who helped out during the visit. The hospitality was great, while the lessons and experiences gained were even more priceless. It was a pleasure working with other Khuddam from the UK and across the world. May Allah bless all of the volunteers who worked day and night to ensure a successful Jalsa Salana. Insha-Allah, MKA USA is looking forward to joining again next year.

In loving memory of Mujeeb-ur-Rahman Advocate
Asif M Basit
n 30 July, I woke up to see my mobile O phone buzzing with messages. A sad news awaited me on the screen of my
phone. A noble friend of mine, Mujeebur-Rahman Advocate had sadly passed away. My heart sank with utter grief. With this, my ten-year connection with him came to an end. This journey of affection started with the initiation of the live broadcast of Rah-eHuda in May 2009. In the early days, when this programme started, Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa would himself nominate and give guidance with regard to the guests on the panel. These were the initial days of Rah-e-Huda and hence, Huzooraa gave special attention to this show. Huzooraa would, with utmost attention, listen to every question and then would provide his guidance accordingly with regard to the guests who should be invited to answer questions. I would always envy these selected guests. How fortunate they were that their names were selected by their beloved Khalifa to defend Islam and its pious teachings. For the first time, soon after, the events of 1974 were to be discussed in an upcoming programme. I was present in the blessed company of beloved Huzooraa and I had not yet completed seeking guidance on this matter when Huzooraa said, “Take Mujeeb-ur-Rahman Sahib live on telephone.” I instantly made a note of this for implementation. Then a stage came when doctrinal discussions with regard to 1974 were to be discussed. When I requested guidance of Huzoor, he instructed, “Mujeeb Sahib is capable enough to answer religious questions.” With this, Huzooraa also gave a name of a religious scholar to be taken as a guest in the programme.
This was the first time I ever had the privilege to talk to the late Mujeeb Sahib. I had known him well, but I had never had the privilege of meeting him. I searched and dialed his phone number instantly. He was a great scholar and hence I always felt a strong sense of his presence. When he picked up the phone and answered, all my apprehensions vanished. He spoke with such affection and involved me in such an interesting discussion and encouraged me so much that all nervousness went away and I felt comfortable to talk to him. When I told him that Hazrat Khalifatul Masihaa had himself graciously appointed him to be a guest in the programme, I felt his heart thumping with joy even on the phone call. When I enquired about a certain time and a certain day for the programme and if he was able to participate in it, he instantly replied in astonishment, “I have been ordered by Huzooraa and now there remains no question about my choice. Wherever and whatever condition I may be in, I will most definitely participate!” Here, I will also recount the rest of the discussion that occurred in this phone call as it would always be a part of our normal discussions whenever I contacted him later. He would ask: Who else is on the panel? What are the questions for the other participants? Can you send all the questions to me via email? How much time would you have for my answer? (This last question would provide me the most joy as there were very few who would empathise with me in such a manner.) Hence, these questions were a part of every discussion we had. Then, he would further assist us by pointing out the starting and ending points of his answers. His detailed understanding of the programme and the questions
allotted to him, patiently listening to the answers of other participants and granting due importance and attention to their answers, answering questions appropriately and to the point and keeping in view the focal point of the questioner were some of the key points of Mujeeb Sahib’s personality that made him popular and equally adored by all and hence, one of my favourite panellists on this show. This is a sketch of how we planned our programmes. Alongside this, we also had to take live questions as well. Sometimes we would be completely unaware of the context in which those questions were asked. Being the host of the programme, I always had the ease with regard to all the difficult and tricky questions that were asked in that I would pass the baton to Mujeeb Sahib and then Mujeeb Sahib would calmly answer the question and after satisfying the questioner, would return to his position. Whatever the tone of the questioner was, Mujeeb Sahib would always keep to his noble demeanour and polite response. He would, in the most appropriate and noble manner, grant answers to questioners in accordance with their disposition. After almost a year, a request with regard to a certain programme was presented before Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa. Due to some constraints, no guest could be taken live via telephone. Huzooraa graciously permitted us to invite Mujeeb Sahib to London. Hence, Mujeeb Sahib was our guest in the true sense. This was my first ever face to face meeting with Mujeeb Sahib. I had always learnt something from his discussions, but this time, I also learnt from his personality, his routines and his character. Mujeeb Sahib was certainly amongst those people who can be termed as institutions in their day to day lives. Many would come and benefit from his diverse experience and knowledge. I take pride in the fact that I learnt a lot from Mujeeb Sahib. The effect of learning is enlarged if the person is also a good orator along with his knowledge and experience. Mujeeb Sahib perfected these three traits to the highest extent. I would also have the privilege to accompany Mujeeb Sahib from the guest house at Gressenhall Road to the MTA Studios at Baitul Futuh, Morden. At other occasions, I would request my colleagues to do so. Whenever I went to pick him up, I found him ready on time. With regard to the answers of questions that had been prepared, I always knew that Mujeeb Sahib would efficiently prepare all his answers in detail, but now, when it came to record the programme in the studios, I saw that Mujeeb Sahib would also take care of his appearance, which would be
immaculate. There was no extravagance, yet his appearance was dignified. Even his shoes were always neat and well polished. When picking Mujeeb Sahib up from the Fazl Mosque, I would reach the guest house before time, in case I could be of any help to Mujeeb Sahib. At the agreed time, I always found Mujeeb Sahib ready for the programme. He loved reading. Books were always lying on his bedside. He would study in depth. He would examine the writer’s point, understand it and then would make others understand it. Most of the time, he would assert that the writer had referred to a certain book with regard to a certain point and that it would be easier to understand it if that original book could be obtained. Many a time, I would receive his call from Pakistan about a book recently published and would ask me to send him a copy from London due to its unavailability in Pakistan or to keep them with me and he would take them from me on his next visit. A book by Ali Usman Qasmi detailing events post-1953 about the persecution of Ahmadis was published. I received a phone call from Mujeeb Sahib at around 9pm in London, which is 1am in Pakistan. He asked me if I had read the book. When I told him that I had, he discussed two or three parts of that book with me. He had found the book to be an interesting one. He also had some reservations with regard to certain parts of the book and said that, in his understanding, certain parts demanded further explaining. He expressed all three views with appropriate emotions and in a well composed manner. The matter to be highlighted here is that he was always aware of the newly published books; he was always eager to get his hands on the printed copy, then comment on its contents and encourage others to read it. This was a wonderful hobby of Mujeeb Sahib. Once, for an MTA programme, some famous guests such as Dr Ayesha Jalal, Prof Francis Robinson and Prof Ian Talbot were invited as guests. I sought Huzoor’saa guidance in this regard and he appointed Mujeeb Sahib as the host of this programme. I had planned to invite him as a guest in the programme as a professional jurist and had the name of a young lawyer in my mind to host this show. However, I noted what Huzooraa had instructed and informed Mujeeb Sahib accordingly. Mujeeb Sahib had always participated in MTA programmes as an expert. He accepted the responsibility readily and wholeheartedly, but, once or twice, he mentioned his anxiety as a host as he had never had the experience. But more than that, he was also concerned if he would be able to fulfil the expectations of Hazrat Khalifatul Masihaa. Apart from this concern that was natural, Mujeeb Sahib invested such a great amount of time and effort for the programme that it is a perfect example for all hosts to follow. Dr Ayesha Jalal, Prof Robinson and
15
Friday 16 August 2019 | AL HAKAM Prof Talbot are historians and academics who are considered to be the most authentic specialists in the history of South Asia. Mujeeb Sahib asked for the original writings of these academics beforehand and studied them all. He familiarised himself with each and every topic discussed in their books in detail. In those days, when I would visit Mujeeb Sahib in the mornings, I would find him occupied in studying books, and when I would visit him in the evening, he would be further indulged. What is the temperament of the guest? What is their point of view with regard to the Jamaat? What questions should be put forward to them and in what manner should these be asked? During those days, all such questions were the focal point of Mujeeb Sahib’s attention and all day, he would remain busy in crafting and composing the questions to ask. Then came the day when the programme was to be recorded. It was natural to be taken aback by the commanding presence of Mujeeb Sahib. His knowledge and his noble character were the key factors that made him so. Before the programme could start, Mujeeb Sahib had already befriended all the guests. The discussion that was recorded was scholarly. Not for a single instance did Mujeeb Sahib impose an impression of his scholarly superiority, rather he presented such questions that spoke of his in-depth knowledge of the subject. A scholarly answer demands a scholarly question and hence, we were able to profit highly from the prolific presence of Mujeeb Sahib as a host and we produced some high quality programmes. In another programme, a well-known jurist and lawyer, Abid Hassan Minto was invited to London. This programme was hosted by Amjad Mahmood Khan Sahib of USA. I once again witnessed Mujeeb Sahib immersed in books for the preparation of this programme. The laws of Pakistan was the subjectmatter of the programme and this was Mujeeb Sahib’s favourite topic. Of course, Mujeeb Sahib was aware of this topic in detail as he was constantly following the cases of Ahmadis in Pakistan, yet whenever I got to see him in those days, I found him immersed in books acquiring knowledge. It was as if he was preparing for an exam. This is indeed a perfect example for all guests of such programmes. Here, I would like to mention another important matter. When I got acquainted with Mujeeb Sahib, he had become infirm and walked with great difficulty. He would use a wheelchair. I would escort him from the Fazl Mosque in London to Baitul Futuh and from there, I would take him to the MTA Studios with Mujeeb Sahib in his wheelchair and there he would take his seat. But whenever external guests were invited, he would ask me to stop the wheelchair outside the studio and would walk into the studio himself. He would say that as they were our guests, he did not wish to go in front of them on a wheelchair.
Albeit with difficulty, Mujeeb Sahib would approach such guests on foot and then the recording would start. Mujeeb Sahib was one who not only had extreme love for Khilafat but also had the capability to impart this love in the hearts of the Ahmadi youth. He would regularly write letters to Hazrat Khalifatul Masihaa. He would read what he had written many times before he sent it to ensure that he had not written anything incorrect. Sometimes he would also give me his letter to see if what he had written was appropriate. He would write letters with extreme love and then would wait for the answers with extreme concern. When he received the reply, it would be a moment of extreme pleasure for him. Once, whilst in London, he was recounting his life story to me at my request. He said, “My father wished for me to devote my life as a missionary.” Having said this, he felt sad as he could not fulfil his father’s wish. Whilst telling me this, he became emotionally overwhelmed and started weeping. He repeated this desire on many occasions and always with a trembling voice. His utmost desire was to offer the remaining days of his life for the service of Islam and was passionate to request Hazrat Khalifatul Masihaa for the acceptance of this very desire. One day, he told me that he had sent the application. At that time, he was almost 80 years old. Later, he flew back to Pakistan and we never got the chance to discuss this matter further. I also forgot and never asked him about the request he had made to Huzooraa. However, after many weeks, he called me at night. I was stunned to receive a call at this unusual hour of the night. When I picked up the phone, the ecstasy was pouring out from Mujeeb Sahib’s every word, and he exclaimed, “I have got the reply!” I responded, “Reply for what?” He humbly replied: “Remember, I told you about a letter I wrote to Huzooraa requesting to accept my waqf for the propagation of Islam. Huzooraa has said that what I am doing right now is no less than waqf and Huzooraa has prayed for the acceptance of my services.” The reply from Hazrat Khalifatul Masihaa strengthened his emotions. He
was pleased for this accreditation. Perhaps the answer was a profound signal of joy and relief for his father Maulana Zill-urRahman Sahib’s resting soul. The fact is that Mujeeb-ur-Rahman Sahib could not formally serve as a life devotee, however, his services were accepted by Hazrat Khalifatul Masihaa as a waqf-e-zindagi. And it is the reality that the opportunity to sacrifice time and effort availed by Mujeeb Sahib for the service of his faith is enviable. He presented the Jamaat’s point of view in courts courageously by exhibiting nobility at its best. He presented the issues faced by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community before international organisations. He presented the reports of persecutions upon minorities and Ahmadis in institutions like Harvard. All this and much, much more comprised the services provided by Mujeeb Sahib to the Jamaat. Huzooraa would include him in various committes on legal matters and would value his opinion. What more could be referred to as great service? Here another thing is worth mentioning. Authority is highly sought after by many. Everyone seems to be after power and wishes for authority. After witnessing the services provided by Mujeeb Sahib, I would often elaborate authority in two separate meanings. One in its literal meaning and the other is in the meaning of credential. It would then come to my mind that why not strive for the authority that holds the status of credential and that we should strive to excel in some particular field and attain the highest status and hence become the Sultan-e-Naseer (best of helpers) of Khilafat. May Allah fulfil this vacuum which, in its entirety, is a big vaccum and may He grant our beloved Huzooraa helpers in all fields to assist him with the best of their capabilities. The last time I heard from Mujeeb Sahib was on 11 July 2019. I received an email in which he wrote that he had had a heart attack and was admitted at Tahir Heart Institute, Rabwah. He was sick and bedridden and was remembering his close ones; it was then that he remembered me. He said that he had come to know
that I had written a book on Khilafat-eAhmadiyya. “If you can send it to me then it will likely give me a new desire to live. Can you please send it to me?” asked Mujeeb Sahib. I replied that I would most certainly send it. The days of Jalsa were near. I had planned to send the book through one of the guests travelling back to Pakistan from Jalsa Salana UK. I got occupied in Jalsa. I had bought the book and kept it and wished to hand it over to someone to take it for Mujeeb Sahib. During the busy routine of Jalsa, it is a routine to check text messages or emails received overnight that might need urgent attention. On 30 July, I woke up to read the sad news of the demise of Mujeeb Sahib. َ ْ َ َّ َ ّ ٰ َّ اﺟ ُﻌ ْﻮ َن ِ اِﻧﺎ ِ ِ و اِﻧﺎ اِﻟﻴ ِﻪ ر Where should I send the book now? And how should I convey my feelings to him? I shall just write it here: “Very Respected Mujeeb-ur-Rahman Sahib. After salutations, I would like to say that what hope of life could my writing give to you? But your words with regard to my book have indeed blown a new spirit in me. You had many a time blown a new spirit in me. After my parents, the people I am indebted to for inculcating the love of Khilafat in my heart, you are most certainly among them. “There are many other favours for which I am in your debt and can never forget you. “As far as sending you the book is concerned, I cannot send you the book now, even if I strive with all my effort. “I will live on with this desire, but will not be able to send you my book because no post reaches the place where you have gone. I wish I could. “I asked so many favours of you and you fulfilled them all. “You asked a single favour, but I was not able to fulfil it. I delayed it to the point of regret. “With a request to forgive me I take leave of you. Wassalam. Sincerely yours.” (Translated by Haseeb Ahmad, Pakistan)

Friday Sermon Men of Excellence 19 July 2019 After reciting the Tashahud, Ta‘awuz, and Surah al-Fatihah, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa stated:
T
oday, I shall continue to relate the account of the lives of the Badri Companionsra [i.e those companions who took part in the Battle of Badr]. The name of the first companion who I shall mention today is Hazrat Amirra bin Salama. Hazrat Amirra bin Salama is also referred to as Amr bin Salama. He belonged to the Balee tribe. Balee is a branch of the ancient Arab tribe of Qudha‘ah which is found in Yemen. Due to this association, he is also referred to as Amirra bin Salama Balawi. Hazrat Amirra was a confederate of the Ansar. Hazrat Amirra bin Salama had the honour of participating in the battles of Badr and Uhud. (Al-Sirat Al-Nabwai Li Ibn Hisham, p. 468, Dar-ul-Kutub Al-Ilmiyyah, 2001) (Al-Tabaqaat-ul-Kubra, Vol. 3, p. 280, Dar-e-Ahya Al-Turath Al-Arabi, Beirut, Lebanon, 1996) (Usdul Ghaba, Vol. 3, p. 121, Amirra bin Salama, Dar-ul-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut, 2008) The name of the second companion to be mentioned is Hazrat Abdullahra bin Suraqah. Hazrat Abdullahra bin Suraqah belonged to the Banu Adi clan of the Quraish, which was the tribe of Hazrat Umarra bin al-Khattab. Hazrat Abdullahra bin Suraqah’s lineage connects with Hazrat Umarra through a man called Ryaah in the fifth generation of his ancestors. His lineage connects with the Holy Prophetsa through a man called Kaab in the tenth generation of his ancestors. Hazrat Abdullahra bin Suraqah’s father was Suraqah bin Mu‘tamir and his mother’s name was Amah bint Abdullah. His sister’s name was Zainab and his brother’s name was Amrra bin Suraqah. Hazrat Abdullahra bin Suraqah’s wife was Umaimah bint Harith with whom he had his son called Abdullah. The majority of historians have mentioned that he participated in the Battle of Badr. However, some are of the opinion that he did not participate in Badr but participated in the Battle of Uhud and the subsequent battles. In any case, according to the majority of them, Hazrat Abdullahra and his brother, Amrra bin Suraqah had the honour of participating in the Battle of Badr. We find the names of Umar or Uthman bin Abdullah, Zaid and Ayyub bin Abdur
Rahman among the progeny of Hazrat Abdullahra. (Al-Sirat Al-Nabwai Li Ibn Hisham, p. 462, Dar-ul-Kutub Al-Ilmiyyah, 2001) (AlIsaba Fi Tamyeez Al-Sahaba, Vol. 4, pp. 9192, Abdullahra bin Suraqah, Dar-ul-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, 2005) (Usdul Ghaba, Vol. 3, p. 256, Abdullahra bin Suraqah, Vol. 4, p. 137, Umarra bin al-Khattab, Vol. 1, p. 121, Muhammadsa Rasool Allah, Dar-ul-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut, 2008) Abdullah bin Abu Bakr narrates that
Hazrat Abdullahra bin Suraqah migrated from Mecca to Medina alongside his brother, Amr. Both of them stayed at the home of Hazrat Rifa‘ahra bin Abdil Munzir. (Al-Tabaqaat-ul-Kubra, Vol. 4, p. 389, Abdullahra bin Suraqah, Dar-e-Ahya AlTurath Al-Arabi, Beirut, Lebanon, 1996) Hazrat Abdullahra bin Suraqah passed away during the Khilafat of Hazrat Uthmanra in 35 AH. (Al-Badaya Wa AlNahaya, Vol. 4, Pt. 7, p. 212, Dar-ul-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut, 2001)
It is narrated by Hazrat Abdullahra bin Suraqah that the Holy Prophetsa stated: ْ َ َ َ َﺴ ّﺤ ُﺮ ْوا َوﻟ ْﻮ ﺑِﺎﻟ َﻤﺎ ِء i.e. “Partake of the Sehri [meal taken early in the morning before fasting], even if it is only with water.” This meant that it is incumbent to partake of Sehri. (Usdul Ghaba, Vol. 3, p. 256, Abdullahra bin Suraqah, Dar-ul-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut, 2008) The next companion to be mentioned is Hazrat Malikra bin Abu Khauli. Hazrat Malikra bin Abu Khauli belonged to the tribe of Banu Ijal who were confederates of the Banu Adi bin Kaab clan of the Quraish. His father’s title was Abu Khauli while his actual name was Amr bin Zuhair. Hazrat Malik’sra name is also recorded as Hilaal. (Al-Sirat Al-Nabwai Li Ibn Hisham, p. 462, Dar-ul-Kutub Al-Ilmiyyah, 2001) (AlTabaqaat-ul-Kubra, Vol. 3, p. 209, Khauli bin Abi Khauli, Dar-e-Ahya Al-Turath AlArabi, Beirut, Lebanon, 1996) When Hazrat Umarra migrated from Mecca to Medina, he was also accompanied by Hazrat Malikra and his brother Hazrat Khaulira in addition to the rest of the members of his own family. (Al-Sirat AlNabwai Li Ibn Hisham, p. 338, Dar-ulKutub Al-Ilmiyyah, 2001) Hazrat Malikra participated in the Battle of Badr alongside his brother Khaulira and according to one narration, Hazrat Khaulira participated in the Battle of Badr alongside his two brothers Hazrat Hilaalra i.e. Hazrat Malik, and Hazrat Abdullahra. (AlTabaqaat-ul-Kubra, Vol. 3, p. 209, Khaulira bin Abi Khauli, Dar-e-Ahya Al-Turath AlArabi, Beirut, Lebanon, 1996) Hazrat Malikra bin Abu Khauli passed away during the Khilafat of Hazrat Uthmanra. (Al-Isaba Fi Tamyeez Al-Sahaba, Vol. 5, p. 533, Malikra bin Abi Khauli, Darul-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut, 2005) The next companion to be mentioned is Hazrat Waqidra bin Abdullah. Hazrat Waqid’s father was Abdullah bin Abd-iManaf. He belonged to the tribe of Banu Tamim. Hazrat Waqidra was a confederate of Khattab bin Nufail and according to one narration, he was a confederate of the Banu Adi bin Kaab, which was one of the tribes of Quraish. (Al-Tabaqaat-ul-Kubra,
Friday 16 August 2019 | AL HAKAM Vol. 3, p. 298, Waqidra bin Abdullah, Darul-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut, 1990) (Usdul Ghaba Fi Marifat Al-Sahaba, Vol. 5, p. 403, Waqidra bin Abdullah, Dar-ul-Kutub alIlmiyyah, Beirut, 2008) Hazrat Waqidra is among the individuals we find a mention of in the books of history, who accepted Islam as a result of the preaching efforts of Hazrat Abu Bakrra. (Al-Sirat Al-Nabwai Li Ibn Hisham, vol. 1, p. 170, Dar-ul-Kitaab Al-Arabi, Beirut, 2008) Hazrat Waqidra accepted Islam prior to the Holy Prophetsa going to Dar-e-Arqam. (Al-Tabaqaat-ul-Kubra li ibn Saad, Vol. 3, p. 298, Waqidra bin Abdullah, Dar-ulKutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut, 1990) I have already spoken about Dare-Arqam some time ago, however, I will briefly mention it again. The Holy Prophetsa considered establishing a tablighi centre [for the purpose of propagating the message of Islam] in Mecca, where Muslims could gather together for prayers etc. and to peacefully and without any hindrance seek guidance from the Holy Prophetsa regarding matters relating to their moral training, as well as serving as a place where the message of Islam could be preached from. Therefore, for this purpose, they were in need of a house, which could serve as a centre or the headquarters. Hence, the Holy Prophetsa chose the house of Arqamra bin Abi Arqam, who had recently accepted Islam. This house was located at the foot of mount Safa. Following this, Muslims would gather and offer the prayers at this very place. Furthermore, when those people who were in search for the truth came to the Holy Prophetsa, he would preach to them the message of Islam in this very place. Due to this very reason, this house has become renowned in history and is also famously known as Dar-ul-Islam. The Holy Prophetsa fulfilled his responsibilities from Dar-eArqam for approximately three years; that is, he made it the centre in the fourth year after his appointment to prophethood and continued his works of preaching and providing moral training from there until the end of the sixth year. Historians write that the last person to accept Islam in Dar-e-Arqam was Hazrat Umarra and that following his acceptance of Islam, the Muslims were greatly strengthened and that they left Dar-e-Arqam and openly started to preach the message of Islam. (Sirat Khatamun-Nabiyyin, Hazrat Mirza Bashir Ahmadra, p. 129) When Hazrat Umarra migrated from Mecca to Medina, along with other members of his family, Hazrat Waqidra also accompanied him. After migrating from Mecca to Medina, Hazrat Waqidra stayed with Hazrat Rifa‘ahra bin Abd-il-Munzir. Following this, the Holy Prophetsa formed a bond of brotherhood between Hazrat Waqidra and Hazrat Bishrra bin Bara‘ah. (AlTabaqaat-ul-Kubra li ibn Saad, Vol. 3, p. 298, Waqidra bin Abdullah, Dar-ul-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut, 1990) Hazrat Waqidra participated in all the battles alongside the Holy Prophetsa in all battles, including the battles of Badr, Uhud and Khandaq. (Al-Tabaqaat-ul-Kubra li ibn Saad, Vol. 3, p. 299, Waqidra bin Abdullah, Dar-ul-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut, 1990)
17 When the Holy Prophetsa sent an expedition under the command of Hazrat Abdullahra bin Jahash, Hazrat Waqidra was also a member of this delegation. (Usdul Ghaba Fi Marifat Al-Sahaba, Vol. 5, p. 403, Waqidra bin Abdullah, Dar-ul-Kutub alIlmiyyah, Beirut, 1994) An individual from the kuffar [disbelievers], Amr bin Hazrami was killed by Hazrat Waqidra during this expedition. This was the first idolater to have been killed in the history of Islam and Hazrat Waqidra was the first Muslim to have killed an idolater during any battle. (Usdul Ghaba Fi Marifat Al-Sahaba, Vol. 5, p. 404, Waqidra bin Abdullah, Dar-ul-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut, 1994) I have previously mentioned the details of this battle whilst relating the account of Hazrat Abdullahra bin Jahash. Hazrat Waqidra passed away towards the beginning of the caliphate of Hazrat Umarra. (Usdul Ghaba Fi Marifat Al-Sahaba, Vol. 5, p. 405, Waqidra bin Abdullah, Dar-ul-Kutub alIlmiyyah, Beirut, 1994) Then, the next companion to be mentioned is Hazrat Nasr bin Harithra. Hazrat Nasr bin Harithra belonged to Banu Abd bin Razzakh which was from the Aus family of the Ansar. His name is also mentioned as Numair bin Harith. His title was Abu Harith. His father was Harith bin Abd and his mother was Saudah bint Suwwad. (Al-Tabaqaat-ul-Kubra, Vol. 3, p. 346, Dar-ul-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut, 1990), (Al-Sirat Al-Nabwai Li Ibn Hisham, Vol. 1, p. 405, Dar-ul-Kitaab Al-Arabi, Beirut, 2008) Hazrat Nasr bin Harithra had the honour of participating in the Battle of Badr. His father, Harithra, also had the honour of being a companion of the Holy Prophetsa. Hazrat Nasrra was martyred during the battle of Qadisiyyah. (Usdul Ghaba Fi Marifat Al-Sahaba, Vol. 5, p. 299, Nasr bin Harithra, Dar-ul-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut, 1994) Qadisiyyah is an area in Iran, or modern-day Iraq, situated at a distance of 45 miles from Kufa. In the 14 AH and during the caliphate of Hazrat Umarra, a decisive war was fought between Muslims and Sassanids at Qadisiyyah. As a result of this, the Sassanid Empire fell into the hands of the Muslims. (Tarikh Al-Tabari, Vol. 4, p. 111, Dar-ul-Fikr, Beirut, 2002) (Furhung Sirat by Syed Fazl-ul-Rehman, p. 229, Zawar Academy, Karachi, 2003) The next companion is Hazrat Malikra bin Amr. Hazrat Malikra bin Amr belonged to Banu Hijr, which was a branch of the tribe of Banu Sulaim, who were confederates of Banu Abd-i-Shams. His father was Amr bin Sumait. Hazrat Malikra participated in the Battle of Badr along with his two brothers, Hazrat Saqfra bin Amr and Hazrat Mudlijra bin Amr. (Al-Sirat Al-Nabwai Li Ibn Hisham, p. 326, Dar Ibn Hazam, Beirut, 2009) (Subul-ul-Huda Wa Al-Rishaad, Sirat Khair-ul-Ibaad, Vol. 4, p. 116, Dar-ulKutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut, 1993) Hazrat Malikra participated alongside the Holy Prophetsa in the Battle of Uhud and other battles and he was martyred during the battle of Yamama in 12 AH. (AlTabaqaat-ul-Kubra li ibn Saad, Vol. 3, p. 72, Dar-ul-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut, 1990) The next companion to be mentioned is
Hazrat Numanra bin Asr. Hazrat Numanra belonged to the Ansar tribe of Bali and was a confederate of the tribe of Banu Muawiyah. He was also called Laqeet bin Asr. Similarly, he was also known as Numan bin Balwi. Hazrat Numanra bin Asr participated alongside the Holy Prophetsa in the Bai‘at-e-Aqba, the Battle of Badr as well as all other battles. He was martyred during the battle of Yamama and according to some, Hazrat Numanra was the individual who was martyred by Tulaihah during the battle with the apostates, after the demise of the Holy Prophetsa. (Al-Sirat Al-Nabwai Li Ibn Hisham, pp. 466 - 467, Dar-ulKutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut, 2001) (Usdul Ghaba Fi Marifat Al-Sahaba, Vol. 5, p. 318, Nasr, Dar-ul-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut, Lebanon, 2008) (Al-Isaba Fi Tamyeez AlSahaba, Vol. 5, p. 510, Dar-ul-Kutub alIlmiyyah, Beirut, 2005) The next companion to be mentioned is Hazrat Uwaimra bin Saidah. Hazrat Uwaimra bin Saidah belonged to Banu Amr bin Auf, which was a branch of the Aus tribe. Hazrat Uwaimra participated in both the first and the second Bai‘at at Aqba. According to the reference found in Sirat Khatam-unNabiyyin [The Life and Character of the Seal of Prophetssa], prior to the first Bai‘at at Aqba, a group of six Ansar from Medina accepted the Holy Prophetsa. According to some narrations, eight individuals are mentioned. Hazrat Uwaimra bin Saidah is said to be among these companions. According to Al-Tabaqaat-ul-Kubra, on the occasion of the migration towards Medina, the Holy Prophetsa formed a bond of brotherhood between Hazrat Uwaimra bin Saidah and Hazrat Umarra and according to another narration, with Hazrat Hatibra bin Abi Balta. Hazrat Abdullahra bin Zubair narrates that he heard the Holy Prophetsa say, “What an exceptional servant of Allah Uwaimra bin Saidah is and he is also among the dwellers of heaven!” According to a narration when the following verse of the Holy Quran was revealed: َ ََ َ َ ّ ۡ ُ ُ ٌ َ ۡ ّٰ فِی ِہ رِج ال ّی ِح ُّبوۡ َن ا ۡن ّی َتط ّہرُ ۡوا ؕ َو الل ُہ یُ ِح ّب ال ُمط ِّہرِیۡ َن the Holy Prophetsa stated, “What an excellent individual is Uwaim bin Saidah, who is also counted among this group of people.” The translation of the aforementioned verse is, “In it are men who love to become purified, and Allah loves those who purify themselves.” (Surah al-Taubah: V.8) Hazrat Uwaimra bin Saidah participated in all the battles alongside the Holy Prophetsa, including the battles of Badr, Uhud and Khandaq. Asimra bin Suaid narrates that he heard the following narration from the daughter of Hazrat Uwaimra bin Saidah: “When Hazrat Umarra bin al-Khattab stood by the grave of Hazrat Uwaimra bin Saidah, he said, ‘There is no one in the world who can claim that they are better than the one lying in this grave. Uwaimra stood by the flag of every expedition that was commissioned by the Holy Prophetsa.’” (Usdul Ghaba Fi Marifat Al-Sahaba, Vol. 4, p. 304, Uwaimra bin Saidah, Dar-ul-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut, 1994) According to one narration, it is mentioned that in the days of ignorance
[i.e. prior to the advent of Islam] Suaid, the father of Harith, killed Ziyad, who was the father of Hazrat Mujazarra. After this incident, one day, the deceased’s son, Hazrat Mujazarra, was able to get hold of Suaid and killed his father’s murderer. Both these incidents occurred before the advent of Islam. It was this very incident that subsequently led to the battle of Bu‘ath which was fought between the Aus and Khizraj tribe. Later, after the migration of the Holy Prophetsa to Medina, the sons of both these individuals who were killed, i.e. Harith bin Suaid and Hazrat Mujazarra bin Ziyad converted to Islam and both of them also participated in the Battle of Badr. It is not known as to how authentic this narration is, but it states that after accepting Islam, Harith bin Suaid would look for an opportunity to avenge his father’s murder by killing Hazrat Mujazarra but he never got the chance. During the Battle of Uhud when the Quraish turned around and attacked the Muslims a second time, Harith bin Suaid attacked Hazrat Mujazarra from his back and martyred him by striking his neck. According to one narration, it is mentioned that Harith bin Suaid also martyred Hazrat Qaisra bin Zaid also. When the Holy Prophetsa was returning from the Battle of Hamra ul Asad, Hazrat Gabrielas came to the Holy Prophetsa and informed him that Harith bin Suaid was in Quba at the time and that he had killed Hazrat Mujazarra bin Ziyad by way of deception. Gabrielas said to the Holy Prophetsa that he should kill Harith bin Suaid for the murder of Hazrat Mujazarra bin Ziyad. Upon hearing this, the Holy Prophetsa travelled to Quba immediately. Usually, he would not go to Quba at that time [of the year] as it would be very hot. Upon the Holy Prophet’ssa arrival, the Muslims from the Ansar who were residents of Quba gathered around him. Harith bin Suaid was also among those who had gathered around the Holy Prophetsa. He had wrapped himself in one or two yellow sheets of cloth. Upon the instructions of the Holy Prophetsa, Hazrat Uwaimarra bin Saidah killed Harith bin Suaid at the entrance of Masjid Quba. The name of the companion being mentioned here is recorded as Uwaimar in Seeratul Halabiyah instead of Uwaim, whereas in all other places such as Tabaqaat and ibn Saad etc. his name is recorded as Uwaim bin Saidah. However, according to another narration, the Holy Prophetsa did not instruct Uwaim bin Saidah to kill Suaid, who had martyred another Muslims by way of deceit. And since they were both Muslims, therefore equitable retaliation in the matter of the slain was prescribed. According to another narration, it states that Hazrat Uthmanra was instructed by the Holy Prophetsa to punish him. There is yet another narration which mentions that Harith stated: “By God! I have killed Mujazar not because I have turned away from Islam. Neither do I have any doubts about the truthfulness of this religion. I did it because Satan made me feel a sense of honour and pride [to seek revenge]. Now

18 I seek repentance from God and His Messengersa for my action, and I am willing to pay the blood-money for it. I shall fast for two months continuously and will free a slave as well.” However, the Prophet of Allahsa did not accept Harith’s apology and the death penalty was upheld. (Al-Sirat al-Halabiyyah, Vol. 3, pp. 353-354, Darul-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut, 2002) (AlTabaqaat-ul-Kubra, Vol. 3, p. 349, Uwaimra bin Saidah, Dar-ul-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut, 1990) This particular narration is according to Sirat al-Halabiyyah. Abu Umar states, “Hazrat ‘Uwaimra passed away during the lifetime of the Holy Prophetsa.” This is the narration of Abu Umar, however, in another narration it states that he passed away at the age of 65 or 66 during the Khilafat of Hazrat Umarra. The next companion is Hazrat Numanra bin Sinnan. He was among the Ansar and was from the Banu Numan family which belonged to the Khazraj tribe. Ibn-eHisham writes that Hazrat Numanra was a freed slave of Banu Numan. Whereas, Ibn Saad has written that he was a freed slave of Banu Ubaid bin Adi. Hazrat Numanra bin Sinnan had the opportunity to participate in the Battle of Badr and Uhud. (Al-Sirat al-Nabawiyyah li Ibn Hisham, p. 471, AlAnsar wa man ma’ahum, Dar-ul-Kutub alIlmiyyah, Beirut, 2001) (Al-Tabaqaat-ulKubra, Vol. 3, p. 293, Numanra bin Sinnan, Dar-ul-Ihyaa Al-Turath Al-Arabi, Beirut, Lebanon, 1990) (Usdul Ghaba Fi Marifat Al-Sahaba, Vol. 5, p. 315, Nu’manra bin Sinnan, Dar-ul-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut, 2008) The next companion is Hazrat Antarah Maula Sulaimra. Hazrat Antarahra was the freed slave of Hazrat Sulaimra bin Amr. Hazrat Anatarah was Sulami Zukwani, and was a confederate of the Banu Sawwad bin Ghadam tribe, which was a branch of the Ansar. Hazrat Antarahra partook in the battles of Badr and Uhud, and was martyred on the day of the battle of Uhud by Nofal bin Muawiyyah Dilli. According to one narration, Hazrat Antarahra was martyred during the Battle of Siffin, during the era of Hazrat Alira, in 37 AH. (AlIsti‘ab fi Marifat Al-Sahab, Vol. 3, p. 1246, Anatarah Al-Sulmai, Dar-ul-Jeel, Beirut, 1992) The next companion to be mentioned is Hazrat Numanra bin Abd-e-Amr. He was a member of the Banu Dinar bin Najjar branch of the Khazraj tribe from among the Ansar. His father’s name was Abd-eAmr bin Masud, and mother’s name was Sumairah bint Qais. Hazrat Numanra bin Abd-e-Amr participated in the battles of Badr and Uhud. His brother, Dhahhaakra bin Abd Amr took part in the Battle of Badr with him. Hazrat Numanra bin Abd-eAmr was granted the status of martyrdom during the Battle of Uhud. Hazrat Numanra and Hazrat Dhahhaakra also had a third brother, whose name was Qutbah. He also enjoyed the honour of being a companion of the Holy Prophetsa. Hazrat Qutbahra was martyred in the incident of Bi‘r-e-Ma‘unah. (Al-Tabaqaatul-Kubra Li Ibn Saad, Vol. 3, p. 394, Numanra bin Abd-e-Amr, Dar-ul-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut, Lebanon, 2012) (Usdul Ghaba Fi Marifat Al-Sahaba, Vol. 5, p. 316,
Numanra bin Abd-e-Amr, Dar-ul-Kutub alIlmiyyah, Beirut, Lebanon, 2008) Saadra bin Abi Waqas relates that the Holy Prophetsa passed by a woman from the Banu Dinar tribe, whose husband, brother and father had all partaken in the Battle of Uhud, and all of them were martyred at Uhud. When some people came to her to extend their condolences, she asked them, “How is the Holy Prophetsa?” They replied, “O mother of (so-and-so), he is well and good, and all praise to Allah, he is just as you desire to see him.” Upon this, the woman replied, “Show me, I wish to see him.” So the people pointed towards the Holy Prophetsa. When she saw the Holy Prophetsa, she said, “All other calamities pale in comparison.” (AlSirat al-Nabawiyyah li Ibn Hisham, p. 545, Dar-ul-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut, 2001) In another narration, it is mentioned that this woman’s son was also martyred during the battle. Hazrat Anasra bin Malik relates that on the occasion of the Battle of Uhud, the inhabitants of Medina became greatly agitated on account of a rumour that the Holy Prophetsa had been martyred. This agitation was so disturbing that the streets of Medina began to hear screams of agony, so an Ansari woman anxiously left her house. She saw in front of her the dead bodies of her brother, son, and husband. The narrator states that he does not know who she saw first, but when she reached the last of the three, she asked, “Who are these people?” The people informed her that these were the bodies of her brother, son, and her husband. However, she replied “How is the Messengersa of Allah?” The people informed her that he was coming ahead. The woman walked until she came to the Holy Prophetsa and grabbed hold of his mantle, saying, “O Messengersa of Allah! May my father and mother be sacrificed for you! When you are well and good, then I have no fear of any loss incurred.” (Al-Mujam Al-Ausat Li Al-Tabrani, Hadith no. 7499, Vol. 5, pp. 329-330, Dar-ul-Fikr, Beirut, 1999) According to one narration, the name of this woman was Sumairahra bint Qais, the mother of Numanra bin Abd-e-Amr. (Kitab-ul-Maghazi Li Muhammad bin AlWaqadi, Vol. 1, pp. 251-252, Baab Ghazwah Uhad, Dar-ul-Kutub Al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut, 2001). On one occasion, Hazrat Musleh-eMaudra mentioned this incident. He states: “Among the noble Companionsra of the Holy Prophetsa, such examples of bravery are found aplenty. Among worldly people, one will hardly find one or two examples of such sacrifices from the millions of people spread across hundreds of nations. However, from among the few thousands of the Holy Prophet’ssa Companions are found hundreds of such examples of bravery. How lofty and wonderful is the example which relates to a woman!” Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra states: “I have quoted this incident many a time” – I have also mentioned this several times – “It is something which is worthy of being mentioned in every gathering, and one which should remain fresh in our memory. Some incidents are so spectacular that despite being recollected time and again, they never grow old. Likewise is the
incident of a woman who heard during the Battle of Uhud that the Holy Prophetsa had been martyred. Greatly distressed at hearing this, she left her house along with other women of Medina, and as soon as she saw the first rider returning from Uhud, asked him, ‘How is the Holy Prophetsa?’ He replied, ‘Your husband has been killed.’ The lady replied, ‘I asked you about the Messengersa of Allah, and you are telling me about my husband.’ He then said, ‘Your father has also been killed.’ The lady replied, ‘I ask you about the Messengersa of Allah and you tell me about my father.’ He then said, ‘Both of your brothers have also been killed.’ Once again, she replied, ‘Just simply answer my question. I do not ask about my relations, but about the Messengersa of Allah.’ “Since this companion’s heart was already content in knowing that the Messengersa of Allah was fine, so in his estimation, it was most important to inform the woman about the demise of her relatives. However, in her estimation, the most beloved thing was the person of the Holy Prophetsa. This is why the woman sternly asked the man to answer her question, to which he replied, ‘The Holy Prophetsa is safe and well.’ Upon hearing this, the woman exclaimed, ‘When he is alive, then I have nothing to grieve about, no matter who dies.’” Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra further states: “It is clearly obvious that the example of the other grieved old woman, who the columnist himself described that her heart seemed heavy with sorrow, and who was crying in her heart, pales in comparison to the example of this female companion.” Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra was comparing this to an example of another women whose heart was grieved and who was crying in her heart but did not express it. Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra further states: “However, this was not the case with the female companion. It was not that she was suppressing her emotions and was instead crying on the inside while not expressing it outwardly. Rather, in the case of this female companion, she was truly happy from the bottom of her heart after knowing that the Holy Prophetsa was alive and well.” The heart of this lady had indeed felt great anguish i.e. the lady Hazrat Muslehe-Maudra was referring to, or whatever the newspapers had written about her in the era that Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra mentioned this incident. But Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra states: “However, in the case of this female companion, there was no grief in her heart at all. And this is such a grand example that the history of the world cannot bring its parallel to match it. So tell me, if regarding such people, it had not been said: َ َٰ َ ْ ِمن ُھ ْم ّم ْن قضی ن ْح َب ٗہ ‘And from among them are those who have truly fulfilled their oaths,’ then what other nation was there in the world regarding whom these words could have been said?” Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra states: “Whenever I read the account of this woman, my heart becomes filled with respect and honour for her, and my heart desires to touch the mantle of this pure
and holy woman, and then touch my hands upon my eyes in respect for she left behind an unparalleled expression of honour for my beloved Prophetsa.” (Khutbaat-eMahmud, Vol. 20, pp. 542-543, Friday Sermon, 24 November 1939) Then, explaining this very same love and adoration [for the Holy Prophetsa], Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra states on another occasion: “Look at how deeply this woman loved the Holy Prophetsa. People told her of the news of her husband, brother and father’s demise, one after the other, but in response, each time, she only continued to ask, ‘Tell me about the state of the Holy Prophetsa?’ The point is that this too was just a woman who demonstrated such astonishing love for the Holy Prophetsa.” (Quroon-e-Ula Ki Musalmaan Khawateen Ka Namuna, Anwar-ul-Aloom, Vol. 2, pp. 439-440) Then, on another occasion, Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra further explains: “Try to envisage this state of affairs where each and every one of you have witnessed one passing away. Everyone loses their loved ones – be it their mother, their father; some witness their brother or sister passing away. Just try to imagine the state of one who is dying. All kinds of pleasant foods are prepared for them by their relatives or cooked at the home in order to afford them with best form of treatment and cure, and great care is taken of them. The atmosphere in the home is as if the world has come to an end. On the other hand, the one dying has no thought other than his own death. However, the Holy Prophetsa instilled such a love in the hearts of the Companionsra that they had no worry for anything other than the Holy Prophetsa. This love was only due to the fact that he was the beloved of God Almighty. They had developed a love for the Holy Prophetsa only because he was loved by God Almighty. This love was not because he was Muhammadsa, in fact this love was because he was the Messengersa of Allah. These people were in fact the devoted lovers of God Almighty and because God Almighty loved Muhammadsa the Messenger of Allah, the Companionsra too developed a love for him. This is not only the case with the men; observe just how the women also developed a love and affection for him in their hearts.” Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra then related the account of the female companion. Hazrat Musleh Maudra then stated: “This was the love which God Almighty placed in their hearts for the Holy Prophetsa, even still, they gave precedence to God Almighty over all else and this was in fact the unity which allowed them to prevail over the whole world. In comparison to God Almighty they neither cared for their parents, nor their siblings or even their spouses. There was only one objective in mind, that their Lord be pleased with them. This is why God Almighty stated regarding them ْ ّٰ َر ِض َی الل ُہ َعن ُہ ْم ‘Allah is well-pleased with them’. They prioritised God Almighty over everything and in turn, God Almighty gave them precedence. But this was not the case with the Muslims later on. If now they have any connection with God Almighty,
Friday 16 August 2019 | AL HAKAM it is merely limited to a belief in the mind. They hold belief in God and in the Oneness of God, but this is not the case in their hearts. If the name of the Holy Prophetsa is mentioned before them, they express intense love for him, and the same goes for when a relative of the Holy Prophetsa is mentioned. (Khutbaat-e-Mahmud, Vol. 23, pp. 46-47, Friday Sermon, 30 January 1942) Shias and Sunnis alike are all filled with emotions at the mere mention of the Holy Prophetsa and his close ones, yet they do not show the same love when the discussion is about God Almighty, despite the fact that it was He Who gifted us the Holy Prophetsa. Therefore, we must develop a passion in our hearts for the love and for the name of God Almighty because true progress can only be derived through the love of God and in remaining firmly established upon the Oneness of God. Hence, this is the fundamental principle which each and every one of us must keep in mind. May Allah Almighty enable us to develop the true understanding of the love of God Almighty and the Holy Prophetsa. Now I shall mention two individuals who recently passed away and will lead their funeral prayers [in absentia] after the Friday Sermon. The first is of Maudood Ahmad Khan Sahib, Amir of the Karachi Jamaat, who was the son of Nawab Masud Ahmad Khan Sahib. He passed away on 14 July at the age of 78. To Allah do we belong and to Him do we return. He was born on 12 April 1941 in Qadian to Masud Ahmad Khan Sahib and Tayyiba Siddiqa Sahiba. He was the paternal grandson of Hazrat Nawab Mubaraka Begum Sahibara and Hazrat Nawab Muhammad Ali Khan Sahibra. He was the maternal grandson of Hazrat Dr Mir Muhammad Ismail Sahibra. He attained his LLB degree from the Punjab University and then spent some time practising with Hazrat Sheikh Muhammad Ahmad Sahib Mazhar. He then joined a well-known law firm named Orr, Dignam & Co and moved to Dhaka where he worked for approximately 52 years for this company. In fact, he became a senior partner and was considered among the senior corporate lawyers of Pakistan. He was an expert in international commercial law, banking and corporate law and was very well-known in this regard. He also composed some of the corporate laws of Pakistan and was offered the directorship of large companies, yet he always refused, saying that those holding such positions are always accused of corruption, even if one has done nothing wrong, so this could be a cause of bringing the name of the Jamaat into disrepute due to the actions of someone else, and that is why he said he wished to avoid this. Besides his wife, he is survived by two children – a son and a daughter. His son also works in the field of law, whilst his daughter lives in Canada with her husband. Her husband, i.e. the son-in-law of Maudood Khan Sahib, is the great grandson son of Mirza Mubarak Ahmad Sahib. Maudood Ahmad Khan Sahib was appointed as the amir of the Karachi District in October 1996. Prior to this, he served as the naib
19 amir and external affairs secretary. He also served as the director of the Fazl-e-Umar Foundation, the Nasir Foundation and the Tahir Foundation. Furthermore, due to the difficult circumstances of the Jamaat in 1984, he also formed good relations with the press. His wife Amatul Momin Sahiba is the daughter of Malik Umar Ali Sahib and her mother was Sayyida Saidah Begum Sahiba, who was the daughter of Hazrat Mir Muhammad Ishaq Sahibra. Amatul Momin Sahiba says: “He was a very humble, courteous, compassionate, modest and kind person. No matter who developed a relationship with him, they would all say that it felt as if they had known each other for years, be they the youngest of workers in the Jamaat or the most senior members.” She further writes: “I did not find any aspect of his life where he failed to discharge his duties as a father or a husband. He was an ideal husband, father and person. Everyone who came into contact with him would be greatly impressed by his character.” His son, Mamun Khan Sahib writes: “He was a model father. From a young age, he instilled within us the importance of prayer. From an early age he would take me along [to the mosque] for the Fajr prayer. He would advise us to respect our elders and to assist them. With regard to his prayers and financial sacrifices, he was a great influence for both my sister and I. His financial sacrifices were also of an extraordinary level.” He further writes: “Whenever we would visit Rabwah, he would take us to Bahishti Maqbara and would inform us about the Companions and other elders of the community. He was a very humble man and content with what he had. He would meet the poor with extreme humility. He would never meet his superior in a manner that perhaps it would assist his progress or that it would be beneficial for him in anyway, rather he always maintained his dignity when in front of his seniors.” His wife says: “I would often joke with him saying that he meets everyone with great enthusiasm, but whenever he would meet someone senior to him, he would maintain a set decorum and it seemed as if in such circumstance his title of ‘Nawab’ would precede him.” He rendered great services for the asiran [those imprisoned for being Ahmadi] in Sindh and also for the families of those that had been martyred. His wife writes that he would take her along on official visits and would take great care of those families and give them gifts. Hospitality of guests was one of his prominent attributes and one that everyone mentioned about him. His wife writes: “Sometimes he would call 10 minutes before and say that a certain number of guests were coming, so I should prepare food for them. As soon as he would mention about expected guests over the phone, he immediately put the phone down to prevent me from giving any reason to not do it.” He had immense love and respect for Khilafat and always showed sincerity. His
son writes: “He would always urge the children including my sister and I to write a letter to the Khalifa once a week, to explain our present situation and would say for us to fax the letter and increase our bond [with Khilafat].” He was suffering from cancer for the past two years and was undergoing treatment for this. By the grace of Allah, he recovered and wrote to me saying that he had started going to the office and was carrying out most of the work as before. However, a few days ago, he suddenly fell ill and it seems as though during this time he suffered a heart attack and could not be revived. When he was being treated for cancer, the doctors treating him said that they were greatly impressed by him. They said that he showed great patience and then during conversation they learnt that he was also a learned scholar. His son states: “Whenever we would go to the hospital, the doctors would stand up out of respect when they would see us.” He further says, “Some non-Ahmadi youths also came to offer their condolences and said that his [i.e. the deceased’s] morals and mentoring had a great impact on their lives.” His wife further says: “One of his special attributes was that he was always punctual in giving Chanda.” (He had a good income and was wealthy.) “I never enquired about his income, nor did I ever have the courage to ask him about it, but if I ever happen to see the Chanda list, I would get an idea of how much Chanda he would give. Similarly, there was a long list of Chanda that he would give on behalf of the deceased [relatives]. He would say to me that we ought to limit our personal expenditure and give more Chanda for the Jamaat.” She further says, “Sometimes it would seem as though he would earn money so that he could give it in the way of the Jamaat.” He was extremely averse to people criticising others and many people have mentioned this about him; I am also a witness to this that he disliked it severely and would stop everyone from doing so. His wife writes: “He would not listen to complaints against anyone and was averse to backbiting. One advice he would always give to us was that one ought not to rely on anyone and that one should strive to their utmost, so that one cannot not blame anyone else.” Major Bashir Tariq Sahib writes: “I once said to Maudood Khan Sahib – perhaps he was serving as naib amir or perhaps in another office – that he was too soft and that he ought to be a bit stricter, as one needs to be strict at certain times. To this he replied, ‘How can one deal in a strict manner with volunteers, who take time out to serve the Jamaat?’” Thus, he worked with everyone in a loving manner. Qaideen and Khuddam have written to me saying that owing to the delicate situation of the Jama’at in Karachi, they would perform various duties and he would get work done from them in a very loving manner. In fact, in view of the circumstances, the Markaz [headquarters] instructed that the amirs should be
accompanied by Khuddam for security purposes. He would always look after them. When he would arrive home, he would tell the Khuddam to inform him on his phone when they arrived home safely. One of the qaideen has written, “Sometimes, if I did not have transport home, he would give me his car saying, ‘Take the car so you can get home safely.’” His daughter writes: “Our father presented us with a great example of the belief in God, loyalty to Khilafat and how one ought to show obedience to the Khalifa. He would always remind us to follow these principles. He would listen to Jalsa Salana proceedings regularly, even during his illness he would watch the Jalsa during MTA. He would tell me every day that I ought to listen to it also.” The Jalsa Salana of Canada and Germany took place at the same time. Her daughter who lives in Canada says that he informed her that he was watching the Jalsa Germany. It was his habit to regularly listen to the sermons. He would always observe the fasts in Ramadan. He would never travel in Ramadan nor make any programmes in this month so that one can spend Ramadan in the way it ought to be observed. This is a lesson for those people who do not fast owing to small trivial matters or due to their travels. Syed Hussain Ahmad, who is Maudood Sahib’s cousin and a missionary who has served in Karachi, says: “During his stay in Karachi, I was serving as a missionary. Whenever we would be faced with a difficulty during a meeting of the amila, he would say, ‘All of this is God’s work. All we have to do is simply make an effort. Therefore, strive to the utmost of your abilities.’ He would stand up to greet everyone. He would listen intently to anyone who made a request to him and then would take the necessary action. He would take great care of the orphans, widows and the poor to the best of his abilities. Despite the limited resources of the Jamaat, he would ensure they were cared for.” A lady from Karachi, Mariam Samar Sahiba says: “He was not only a benevolent father to his own children, but in fact, he was a compassionate father for the entire Karachi Jamaat. He would be involved in the happiness and sorrow of everyone. He would care for everyone. He was very humble and had deep insight of all matters.” During one programme, his name was written as ‘Nawab Maudood Khan’, so he crossed out the word ‘Nawab’” The Deputy Amir, Qureshi Mahmood Sahib, states: “During his tenure as an Amir, he guided the members of the Karachi Jamaat like a loving and compassionate father. He was very much liked by all; an extremely affectionate and well-respected individual. He was very patient and forbearing and humility was a very notable trait of his personality. Irrespective of whether it was someone senior or a child, rich or poor, educated or non-educated, he would meet everyone in a very loving manner and would listen to whatever they had to say very attentively and then advise them accordingly. Regardless of whether the

20 person coming to meet him was senior or junior to him, he would get up from his seat and meet them. In order to fulfil his Jamaat responsibilities, he would work for many hours late into the night. He would go straight to his Jamaat office from his work office and would work there until 10pm. He made a great effort in trying to encourage the children and youth of the Jamaat to acquire education. In his capacity as an amir, he would forge a personal connection with each secretary of the department and the local presidents and would regularly advise them on their departments.” Sadr Ansarullah of Pakistan writes: “He was always deeply concerned about the education and moral training of the Jamaat.” He further states, “I went on an official visit of his Jamaat to attend a refresher course for office-bearers. He came to me and said with a lot of heartfelt pain that only three members from the Ansarullah attended the Fajr prayer at the mosque, even though many of them lived nearby and owned cars and therefore could easily reach the mosque. He further added that all the office-bearers are attending the meeting, therefore I should tell them that first and foremost they should bring about is a pious and pure transformation within themselves and pay particular attention towards worship and to also be concerned about the education and moral training of their children and the young generation.” Sadr Ansarullah states that he said this with great anguish. Another lady has written: “We were travelling to Qadian and each one of us who was travelling had some Indian currency in their possession. Initially, we were told that we had permission to take this currency but were later informed that we were not allowed. We were all given a form to declare our currency, however one of the workers at the Indian immigration office said that although we were not permitted to take any currency but since we had not intentionally done this, therefore we should not mention it on the form and just simply take it with us. However, Amir Sahib did not listen to him and declared whatever money he had, which was not a small amount, in fact it
was around 25-30 thousand rupees. Once again, the immigration officer said that he should not declare that he had any money, otherwise in accordance to the law they would have to cease the money. However, despite this, he declared whatever amount he had with utmost honesty and happily gave the money away for them to cease. He did not take any advantage of any leniency afforded to him.” As I mentioned earlier and some of the Khuddam-ul-Ahmadiyya members have also written that he would always express his gratitude to those on duty. They said that he would thank them in such a manner as if they had done some great personal favour for him. Imtiaz Hussain Shahid Sahib, who is the Amir of Karachi Drigh Road, states: “If I were to encapsulate his entire personality, the qualities which would be most notable would be his meekness, humility, love for Khilafat and respect for the Nizam-e-Jamaat.” He further states: “In 2016, a local administration was established in Karachi and I was appointed as its amir. I went to the amir of the district and told him that I had been entrusted with a huge responsibility. He replied that indeed it was a huge responsibility, but that I should always remember that whenever I am faced with difficulty, I should write to the Khalifa of the time for prayers and God Almighty shall grant His blessings. He said that he also does the same.” I would regularly receive his letters every Friday seeking prayers and also prior to any important function or event that took place in Karachi and also when it was close to the end of the financial year. Qaid Khuddam-ul-Ahmadiyya, Bilal Haider Tipu, states: “Amir Sahib was particularly fond of Surah al-Mominun. Many a time, when there would be recitation of the Holy Quran at a Khuddam-ul-Ahmadiyya event, he would ask me to assign a portion from Surah al-Mominun. He would then advise in a very loving manner that we should greatly ponder over this Surah, particularly the first portion of it. Even today, when I reflect upon this, my heart testifies that he
safeguarded his obligatory prayers from all vain matters. He demonstrated through his own example how a believer can attain true success.” He further states: “The second piece of advice he gave me was when he once came to me when I was on my own and said that one key lesson he had learnt in his life was to write letters to the Khalifa of the time every week and he explained this to me in a very loving manner, which I am benefitting from this to this day.” Indeed, he showed great obedience to Khilafat and had great respect for it. Once, there was a function of members of the khandan [members of the Promised Messiah’sas family] and certain matters came to my attention and I also a wrote a letter to him stating that he was also present in that function and such and such thing should not have happened and that I did not expect this from him. Subsequently, he wrote to me in which he first apologised and then after this stated that he was also happy to learn that we are not completely free to do whatever we will and that there is always someone there to guide us and morally train us. He then expressed his gratitude to me for this. He was one of my elders in terms of family relations, but despite honouring our family relation with great respect, when I was appointed as Khalifa, in fact even when I was appointed as Nazir-e-Ala by Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IVrh, he showed great obedience towards the Nizam [system of the Jamaat] with utmost humility and showed me great respect and loyalty. May God Almighty grant him His forgiveness and mercy and elevate his station. May God Almighty also enable his children to also continue his good deeds.
