ANDREW LIANG I enjoy going hiking. Although I feel like giving up while hiking up the hills for 4 hours, when I finally reach the top of the mountain, my vision has expanded beyond the parking lot itself. Seeing the world from the top of the hill mirrored my passion for landscape architecture. That feeling makes you feel like a spec of dust yet infinite all at once. Our contributions may be only minor to the entire world, but just think about how many people are going to use the space you designed or built for their communities.

Rain Gardens

Project Vision:

The design vision sought to connect the two existing natural lands, Woodland Reservoir and Harbor Brook, by implementing series of nature patches along the blocks. The patches are individual site designs that incorporate the idea of children playing in nature, and ecological education. These patches are then connected by rain gardens along the streets.

1304 Bellevue Site

The twelve week studio project included regional inventory and analysis, concept modeling, diagramming, and master planing. The project first started with the site designs and gradually developed towards the big picture.

Master Planning | Urban Ecology | Green New Deal Super Studio 5th Year Fall 2020 Near Westside, Syracuse, NY West Street

Project Vision:

Syracuse has been experiencing the effects of Climate Change including severe weather events and inconsistent weather patterns in local and regional scale. Despite existing tree canopy coverage and green spaces may provide their function, however, the current value of urban forest is declining in Syracuse due to Climate Change.

Proposed Residential Planting Palette

The Urban Forestry masterplan sought to mitigate the impacts of climate change, and improve overall health and wellbeing of the Near Westside Neighborhood in the city of Syracuse. The overall masterplan seeks to maximize the potential of urban forestry and increase the proximities between Near Westside neighborhood, Harbor Brook and downtown Syracuse. Design system focuses on reconfigure current streetscape design with stormwater tree trench system, encouraging invasive species removal and replant native species in the residential neighborhoods. A tree may provide significant environmental benefits, however, an urban forest will create a remarkable living environment and atmosphere.

Project Vision:

The project sought to design a high-end residential property and the creation of a full set of construction documentation. Existing surveyor and architect’s drawings were given for the site, illustrating general uses and programmed areas, such as fountain wall, pool and fire place must be remained on site. Students utilized the given documents to create their individual design while remaining certain significant features of the site, such as fountain wall, pool & spa, fireplace and retaining wall. Project prerequisite required students to research of and adherence the policy and zoning code for the town of Dewitt, NY.

One large stepped green wall and two large individual rectangular green walls, both designed and built by Blondie’s Treehouse, they were newly installed at Jane Street Capital’s new office in New York City. I was tasked to design the planting layouts of the green walls, and produce shop drawings shown in the following spreads.

Blondie’s Treehouse was contracted to build the 5th Floor rooftop terraces, which includes custom millwork, edging, pavers. The park is also full of native and resilient vegetations, they flow through the terrace providing a dynamic landscape framework and highlighting a vegetated rooftop park to combat against the concrete jungle in an urban city.

BTH Comment (Date) 7/29/2019 - BTH doesn't recommend using a soil moisture sensor. Growing medium depth won't support a soil moisture sensor & approved BTH shop drawings, depict the lowest dip on each zone (Zone 4) will be set with extremely low runtime because of overlap/runoff. BTH intends to use the weather based controller has a weather station & this controller is EPA WATERSENSE LABEL.. . The controller is able to program specifically along with each zone to give the correct 7/29/2019 - BTH recommends the following two driplines: 1) Rainbird XFCV-06-12 (which offers 0.6 GPH emitters and it comes with automatic check valve) 2) Rainbird XFS-04-12 (which offers 0.4 GPH emitters but doesn't come with automatic check valve) * Rainbird XFCV-04-12 (12" spacing @ 0.4 GPH) was included in the approved BTH shop drawings, but the product does not exist. 7/31/2019 - BTH team confirmed the "Valve Box - 14" x 19" Rectangle NDS 116 TBC" will not be used on green roof. 7/29/2019 - BTH team intends to submit green lid as per specification. * BTH may be able to modify the small valve box to be set flush with finished grade, if preferred. Brooklyn Public Library and environmental education center at Greenpoint, where Blondie’s Treehouse was awarded as landscape contractor. The library plaza will be plant with hardy and tolerant plant materials native to the New York State, and granite pavings that resemble glacier movement to creating a unique and engaging entrance. Second floor is a flexible reading space with large circular seating area within a mounded planting bed featuring native shrubs with high habitat value. The third floor roof level serve as an environmental education center with featuring space for garden and a large pollinator green roof.
