Student Member steelcase student competition fall 2022. 8 weeks. 12,000 sf boston, massachusetts
The 2023 Steelcase Next Competition highlights a new research and development hub in Boston, MA. The company, Next, is headquartered in Providence Rhode Island and specializes in robotics. The concept for this research and development hub takes inspiration from robotics and the technology and innovation surrounding this industry. As technology becomes more advanced, the processes behind it become more complex. However the ultimate goal that technology is trying to attain remains the same - simplicity. The goal of these complex robots and systems is to make everyday life more simple for the users. This office highlights the contrast between simple and complex spaces, taking inspiration from the complexity of the built environment in the Innovation District. A path of simplicity cuts through the complex environment of the rest of the office, creating a path of travel that offers respite and an opportunity to reset throughout the workday.
CONCEPT + IMAGERY

The simple path throughout the office provides a sharp contrast that breaks up the complex areas of the office, provides wayfinding, and connects the entire space. Materiality, form, and colors are inspired by the surrounding city grid and elevation, and a circuit board used in robotics.
The site, located at 101 Seaport Blvd, is a part of the rapidly growing Seaport District in Boston, MA. The Seaport District, also called the Innovation District, is home to many technology and entrepreneurial ventures.

DIAGRAMMING + SPATIAL PLANNING
The circulation of the NEXT office is based on creating a simple path through the entire space. First the existing condition was sectioned into two distinct parts, with a third part being added within a part. These parts were then halved, creating the simplest division possible. This was used to create the base of the path with 45 degree angles to represent the angles found in a circuit board.

BRAND + LOGO
The new Research + Development hub has 42 employees, divided into three teams. These teams include design, engineering, and product management and development. The office includes workstations for each employee, three designated team spaces, project rooms, prototype and lab spaces, lounge and kitchen space, and a retail mock-up center. The branding of NEXT is very sleek and represents their technology forward business culture. The void through the letters in NEXT is representative of the path of simplicity found in the office space.

Lighting
The Pipeline Modular Lighting system is used to create an abstracted representation of the Boston city grid and skyline. By following the x and y axis of the city grid and the z axis of the skyline, this multidirectional form is created. The fixture provides direct/indirect light to the workstation areas and much of the open office.
