shift
shift coworking office fall 2021. 5 weeks. 7,500 sf roanoke, va
The way we work is constantly evolving. Shift is a coworking office that highlights a shift towards a new way of working, one that is collaborative in innovative ways. Inspiration was taken from the site location in Roanoke, VA, which has a very high bikability rate and where biking to work is common and encouraged. Much like the gears and chain of a bicycle, this space aims to unite distinct parts and work together to create one whole functioning unit. The spatial planning is based around a circulation path intended to mimic the shape of a bicycle chain.

The spatial layout for Shift is based on the gears and chain of a bicycle. This chain shape creates a path of circulation throughout the coworking space, connecting and unifying the different segments of the office, much like the bicycle chain connects the wheels to the body. The conference room is representative of the large gear. This circular conference room is supportive of multiple meeting styles and uses the Hightower Nest System Table and Steelcase Kona Stacking Chairs, which allow for flexibility. This is especially important for the weekly yoga classes that are held in the conference room.

The main lounge and staircase area takes direct inspiration from the shifting gears of a bicycle. Inteded to mimic the gears rotating and interlocking, the unjulating forms create pockets for users to sit, relax, and collaborate. The central conference room is given privacy with frosted glass, and the ceiling element creates a sense of constant movement around the chain, connecting the different parts of the office.
