Virginia Tech Interior Design Portfolio
INTRODUCTION Hi! My name is Alice Sandoval and I’m a third year interior design student at Virginia Tech. I have always been passionate about design and it’s ability to impact many aspects of our lives. Another one of my passions is entreprenurship and innovation. I believe interior design is a form of entrepreneurship itself in how it is constantly evolving to adapt to changing human needs. I enjoy using an entrepreneurial mindset when creating spaces to solve problems and to better the overall experience. Outside of studio, I enjoy discovering new recipes, spending time outdoors, and learning new hobbies and skills.

Coworking Office Fall 2021 | 5 Weeks The way we work is constantly evolving. Shift is a coworking office that highlights a shift towards a new way of working, one that is collaborative in innovative ways. Inspiration was taken from the site location in Roanoke, VA, which has a very high bikability rate and where biking to work is common and encouraged. Much like the gears and chain of a bicycle, this space aims to unite distinct parts and work together to create one whole functioning unit. The spatial planning is based around a circulation path intended to mimic the shape of a bicycle chain.

Spatial Diagrams The spatial layout for Shift is based on the gears and chain of a bicycle. This chain shape creates a path of circulation throughout the coworking space, connecting and unifying the different segments of the office, much like the bicycle chain connects the wheels to the body. The conference room is representative of the large gear. This circular conference room is supportive of multiple meeting styles and uses the Hightower Nest System Table and Steelcase Kona Stacking Chairs, which allow for flexibility. This is especially important for the weekly yoga classes that are held in the conference room.

Shipping Container Live/Work Environment IDEC Student Design Competition Fall 2021 | 3 Weeks | Collaborative Hozho is defined as a sense of harmony and balance with one’s surroundings. This space relies on symbiotic relationships to create a balance between the live and work environment. Utilizing shipping containers arranged in weaving patterns to reflect the culture of the Navajo textile artist, these spaces mutually benefit each other and establish a sense of Hozho. Symbiotic relationships within Heart of Hozho can also be seen between culture and community, interior and nature, and industrial and handmade. Multi-functional, interconnected spaces are highlighted in an effort to provide sustainable solutions to modern housing and retail environments. This project was completed in collaboration with Carly Billak, Claire Hundley and Maeve Lyman.

Site Map The site, located at 504 West Broad Street in Richmond, VA is among many shops and restaurants that attract high levels of foot traffic. Richmond is a growing area that fosters a very diverse and friendly community. The corner location of the site allows brand visibility from two streets as well as lots of natural light in the storefront area. The site offers ideal amenities within walking distance, including public transportation access, restaurants and cafes, an art museum, a non-profit for local creators, a pharmacy, and outdoor parks.
Site Plan
Conceptual and spatial diagrams to show symbiotic relationships of overlapping spaces and weaving orientation of containers. The diagrams show the outdoor environment and how it is intertwined with the interior space. The store branding and logo were inspired by the zig-zag shape formed in the diagrams.

The storefront of Heart of Hozho serves as both a showroom for the artist’s textiles as well as storage for finished works and materials. The central location of the loom creates a circumambulation for customers by allowing them to observe the process of weaving while they thread themselves through the showroom space. The loom placement also encourages a clockwise path of travel, which was inspired by movement through traditional Navajo homes. While creating physical spacing between customers and encouraging one way travel, this decision promotes a safer post-covid environment. The floor plan also emphasizes the centralized space with the placement of the flex space, which acts as a transition between the residential and commercial spaces. The centralized orientation of important spaces strengthens the influence of the Navajo culture and their deep rooted tradition of circular movement between interacting environments.

Tech Company Satellite Office Fall 2021 | 5 Weeks OpenTable, a restaurant booking service, prides itself on being the intersection of food, culture, and technology. The concept for this satellite office is meant to represent a space for gathering and interacting, much like a dinner table. This is achieved through creating intersection points throughout the office. These points encourage higher traffic and therefore more interaction between employees. OpenTable as a brand emphasizes inclusivity and collaboration, which is encouraged through the design of this satellite office, where everyone has a place at the table. The color scheme for the space was chosen starting with the brand’s hue of red, then a split complementary scheme was added. The iconic OpenTable red hue is used mainly in the intersection points to emphasize the spaces of gathering. Materials were chosen with attention to sustainability factors and acoustic needs of an office. Additionally, wood elements were widely used to represent the motif of the dining table.
