EDITORIAL

Trotto, passo, alt. È passato giusto un anno dall’arrivo nel nostro paese della pandemia che ha sconvolto il mondo e lo sport dei cavalli, come tutto il resto d’altronde, ha incassato con grande fatica le necessarie chiusure e cancellazioni determinate per osteggiare la pandemia.

La voglia di ricominciare è incalcolabile ed è la stessa sia per i protagonisti che animano il panorama mondiale che per i bambini che semplicemente iniziano la loro attività in sella ai pony.

Visto dalla sella e attraverso le orecchie di un cavallo, il mondo appare più bello.

Proviamo a credere a questo antico proverbio arabo. Le storie, i personaggi ed i progetti che vi raccontiamo in questo numero della rivista ce lo confermano sicuramente. Guardiamo avanti.

A year has gone by since the arrival in our country of the pandemic that has ravaged the world, and, just like everything else, equestrian sports too have found it hard to deal with the necessary lockdowns and cancellations required to fight this virus.

The desire to start again is immeasurable and it is the same for the top riders and the children who are simply starting to learn to ride on their ponies.

The world looks more beautiful seen from the saddle or through the ears of a horse. Let us try and believe in this ancient Arab proverb.

The stories, the people and the projects we have written about in this issue of the magazine certainly confirm it. We must look ahead.

Ready? Halt, walk, trot, and very soon we hope, off at a canter again.

With a diploma from the German School in Milan, in 1973 she graduated cum laude in Political Science from Pavia University. In 1975 she started to work for Editoriale Domus, the publishing house founded in 1929 by her father Gianni Mazzocchi. A professional journalist, when her father died in 1984 she became the company’s president and CEO, continuing and increasing her father’s entrepreneurial activities; she still is still the owner of historical publications and has started new ones. As of 2000 she started the digitalisation of the company and its products so as to allow the dissemination of the contents produced also on various digital platforms. She has created a B2B division with the objective of providing sophisticated data banks for operators in the automotive and insurance sectors. Through various acquisitions and avant-garde digital products she has ensured the growth of this division at an international level. So as to test the performance of vehicles she created the Vairano Centre (ASC) close to Pavia.

Giovanna Mazzocchi

Yann Arthus-Bertrand, da sempre amante degli animali, giovanissimo dirige una riserva naturale nel cuore della Francia. A trent’anni decide di trasferirsi in Kenya con la moglie Anna per studiare il comportamento dei leoni nel Masai Mara. Da questa esperienza nasce il suo primo libro “Lions”. Rientrato in Francia diventa fotoreporter esperto di natura, avventura e sport. La consacrazione nell’olimpo della fotografia arriva però con la fotografia aerea che lo impegna in ogni angolo del mondo. Tra le sue più importanti collaborazioni Géo, National Geographic, Life, Paris Match e Figaro Magazine.

In perpetuo movimento ha potuto fotografare uomini e animali, cavalli in particolare, nelle destinazioni più disparate. Dai grandi campioni, vedette delle piste e dei campi ostacoli, ai cavalli da lavoro e ai compagni di vita e di tradizioni secolari nelle più povere regioni del pianeta.

Yann Arthus-Bertrand, always inspired by a passion for animals, as a very young man was the manager of a nature reserve in the heart of France. At the age of thirty he decided to move to Kenya with his wife Anna to study the behaviour of lions in the Masai Mara. This experience resulted in the publication of his first book, “Lions”. After returning to France he became a photo-reporter specialised in nature, adventures and sport. His consecration to the Olympus of photography came with aerial photography that took him to the four corners of the earth. In perpetual movement, he was able to portray human beings and animals, horses in particular, in the most diverse locations of the world. His portraits of horses range from the greatest stars of racetracks and show jumping arenas to carthorses, as well as our companions of a lifetime and of century-old traditions in the poorest regions of our planet.

Mario Viggiani è stato capo ser vizio al Corriere dello Sport, a Roma, dove ha la vora to dal novembre 1984 occupandosi di ippica ed equitazione ma anche di tennis e boxe. È arrivato ai cavalli per la passione ippica di uno zio, titolare di una scuderia di galoppo (la Lucana Gens) che nella giubba rossa e blu portava i colori della sua città nativa, Potenza. Prima di a pprodare al Corriere dello Sport, negli anni ’80 è sta to per lungo tempo a Cavallo 2000, uno dei due trisettimanali ippici italiani di allora, collaborando anche alle prime trasmissioni televisive ippiche dell’epoca. Si è anche occupato di aste, come banditore e come reda ttore di ca taloghi. Attualmente collabora come freelance per il Corriere dello Sport.

Mario Viggiani has been a senior editor at Corriered dello Sport, in Rome where he worked since 1984 in charge of horse racing and equestrian pages, as well as those of tennis and boxing. He got his passion for horses from his uncle, who owned a racing stable (Lucana Gens) whose jockeys rode in red and blue silks - the colours of his hometown Potenza. Before coming in Corriere dello Sport in the eighties,he spent many years at Cavallo 2000, one of what were the two tri-weekly Italian horse-racing magazines at the time. He was also a presence in the first racing programmes to be shown on television, as well as having a role as auctioneer and editor for sales catalogues.

SPOTLIGHT ON EVENTING. Elegance and discipline, courage and training, precision and physical fitness. With the great open spaces of the countryside as the incomparable backdrop, eventing is the most sophisticated and global discipline among all those representing equestrian sports at the Olympic Games. It is a real concentration of technique and competitiveness.

So prepare to support Italy and eventing mightily throughout the 2021/22 season, because there will be no lack of opportunities and one should be prepared to bet that with the many world class events planned in Italy, this enchanting discipline will manage to steal the spotlight even from horse shows with more well-established traditions.

The reason is simple. Starting with the sporting programme one should definitely not underestimate the fact that eventing will be representing Italy with a team at the Tokyo Olympics. This is the only equestrian discipline with a team at the Games led by the Italian Equestrian Sports Federation, since in show jumping Italy has only one rider qualified.

It is difficult to make plans at times such as these, with rules for containing the pandemic differing in every country and preventing travel and the organisation of competitions. “It is a great opportunity to be able to allow a larger number of riders to compete at the highest possible international level; three plus a reserve rider for the team in Tokyo and four team members as well as two individual riders at the European Championships.” Italy qualified for the Olympics thanks to a good performance at the last European Championships and has played a leading role in this last year’s Nations Cup season.

Winning the last leg of the 2020 series held at the army’s equestrian centre in Montelibretti ensured that Italy finished the season in a very respectable second place.

Sports programmes and results aside, during the 2021/22 season, in Italy the spotlight will be firmly on eventing because of these extraordinarily important tests.

A few days after the publication of this issue of Equestrian Time, the FEI is expected to decide whether the Army’s Equestrian Centre of Montelibretti will be hosting the 2021 European Championships (September 23-26). The Ranieri Campello Centre at Pratoni del Vivaro will be the world class setting for the Italian leg of the Nations Cup in mid-October and, last but not least, the 2022 World Championships. Save the date and Go Italy!

Nelson e Rodrigo Pessoa sono brasiliani ma cittadini del mondo.

As the saying goes, “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”… and in the world of equestrian sports this is very often confirmed. It is in the world of horses that family success finds a privileged fertile environment involving fathers, mothers, children, brothers and sisters, nephews, nieces and cousins often sharing the spotlight.

The panorama is vast and varied, but, among the many cases there is one that, as far as sporting success is concerned, stands out above all others in the history of equestrianism. The leading players in this case are Nelson and Rodrigo Pessoa, both born in Brazil but citizens of the world.

Albeit with different forms of commitment, both father and son are aiming for the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Nelson Pessoa (born in 1935), known to everyone as Neco, has a nickname that says it all: The Wizard. The first rider ever to attract the attention of a sponsor (Moet et Chandon in the early ’70s), Neco was an enfant prodige and an extraordinarily gifted rider, with a career in show jumping that has been endless and studded with success.

His reputation as a coach is incomparable and he has been surprisingly successful as an entrepreneur, a talent scout for top horses as well as a top trainer.

His career began immediately after the end of World War II and certainly did not get off to an easy start.

The equestrian world had deep military roots and the necessary tradition was lacking in South America. The only exception was Chile and just after the war this country was able to rely on one of the strongest teams in the world. It was there that Neco

Gli australiani sono perfezionisti come me e come me mettono la cura del cavallo al primo posto. was sent to train. During the ’50s, when still not even 20-years-old, he started to compete successfully in his first important international shows and immediately understood that his own country would not be the place where he could improve and compete against the best of the best.

With no financial support from his strict father, who had however greatly encouraged his passion for horses, he therefore decided to move to Europe, choosing Geneva as his first headquarters. A wealthy French lady he had met in Brazil had offered him a job in Switzerland where he was to train her horses. It was the early ‘60s and “The Wizard” had already competed in the Stockholm 1956 Olympic Games.

His marriage to his beloved Regina, his lifetime companion, was organised at top speed and this move marked his life in every possible way. As he likes to remember “at the time transporting horses was the most significant problem for riders. They travelled by sea and in order to get to Europe that meant at least two or three weeks at sea. Air travel for horses was a dream. When we went to the Stockholm Olympics with the horses, it took us 95 hours with stopovers to refuel in Dakar, Paris and Copenhagen.”

Now that he is 86 years old, Nelson Pessoa still leaps from one plane to another so as to hold clinics or train international riders as they prepare for the most important shows. Throughout his life he has travelled the Europe-United States route constantly. In practice he never did hang up his boots and only recently decided to only devote his time to coaching. His most recent and very important commitment has been that of preparing the Australian eventing team for the Tokyo Olympic Games and this

is an extraordinary acknowledgment of his talent considering that the Aussies are among the best in the world in this equestrian discipline.

“I consider it a privilege to be able to train the Australian “eventers”. Their approach to horses is totally akin to the old Anglo-Saxon traditions. They are perfectionists just like me and just as I do they put the care of the horse before anything else. In my opinion, being a good rider means looking after horses down to the smallest detail, from their teeth to their feet. It means sleeping in the horsebox when away at shows so as to be closer to the stables, having top professionals supporting the team, starting with the farrier and the vet, paying attention to what they eat and allowing them to relax. Allowing our sports partners to go out into their paddocks and enjoy themselves in addition to leaving their stables just to train is essential.”

The Tokyo Olympics will be the umpteenth in which father and son will write another chapter in their lives marked by the ‘Five Rings’ and there is nothing unusual about that since this aspect of their story started in a distant 1992. On that occasion, and as also happened at the next Games in Atlanta in 1996 (when Neco was already 62 years old) both were competing.

Rodrigo (born in 1972) has now won more than his maestro. Gifted with extraordinary talent he already revealed his outstanding star qualities while still riding ponies.

He moved at top speed becoming world champion in Rome (’98), Olympic champion in Athens (2004) and won the FEI World Cup finals three years in a row. His CV indicates that every major goal has been achieved.

The responsibility that goes with being the son of such a famous parent must have been both a burden and greatly stimulating, “Of course believing I would succeed was my dream and always was, ever since I was a child. The example set by my father always taught me that hard work and sacrifice was at the basis of everything and they were never lacking in my life.”

Since marrying an American girl, Alexa Weeks, in 2009, Rodrigo has chosen to live in Palm Beach in the U.S. where he has a dream stable. Almost by chance in recent years he has started to privilege his work as a coach over his career as a rider. The Irish Federation in fact chose him as its coach and in this case too, the results were outstanding with a gold medal won at the 2017 European Championships almost immediately after his arrival.

“As a rider I needed to take a break after a conflicting situation concerning selections for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. It was a very gratifying experience and a challenge that motivated me greatly and that I experienced with huge enthusiasm and participation. Riding is an individual sport but team competitions play a special role. Ireland needed to rediscover a team vision and that is what I worked on.”

A year ago Rodrigo returned to his life as fulltime rider and like all top show jumpers he is preparing for the Tokyo Olympic Games. He had always said he would only compete again if he had an interesting horse he could rely on and that appears to be the case. His stables are filled with a team of important show jumpers and it is really nice to be able to say that the horse he relies on the most at the moment is an Italian-bred one: Quality FZ, bred in Veneto by Franca Zanetti.

Both on horseback and on foot he has the temperament of a leader and proved this clearly for many years when he was president of the International Jumping Riders Club (IJRC), the body that represents show jumping riders within the FEI. It was an important job and one to which he dedicated himself with great energy. Although he has now passed the baton to the Club’s new president Kevin Staut, Rodrigo is always involved in the battle to defend his sport.

He firmly says that “Business has gained the upper hand in the world of show jumping and the demands and requirements of sponsors and horse dealing stables have far too much influence over decisions concerning the global calendar of events and the organisation of circuits, favouring the participation of riders who buy the right to compete only to improve their relationship with companies investing in shows.” This is a powerfully critical perspective that once again sees father and son on the same wavelength. It’s quite true!! The apple never falls very far from the tree.

Lo sport e la cura dell’animale sono stati come una scuola di vita.

VISION, PASSION, TENACITY, COURAGE. Vision, passion, tenacity, courage, energy, endless optimism and a definite dislike of interviews and being in the spotlight are the characteristic of top publishing entrepreneur Giovanna Mazzocchi, with her immense passion for engines and planes, while horses and the equestrian world, while not a real absolute passion, have played and still play an important role in her daily life. She too had ridden there as a young girl, but in a totally different way, as she tells us while talking to Equestrian Time. This is a long story filled with anecdotes and laughter that is all too quickly told.

“My own memories as a rider are probably best forgotten. I made a name for myself at the C.I.L. only because I found it so hard to get a horse called Orsolina to move away from the centre of the school… I soon stopped and only came back when my daughters insisted they wanted to start to ride. Unlike me, however, the two of them literally fell in love with horses and that marked the beginning of my career as a “riders’ mother”.

The results achieved by the Bordone girls were very promising from the start. “It was my friend Francesca Carnaroli who persuaded me to buy them their first pony and with that our adventures in the world of horses officially began. Who would ever have

Initially Giovanna Mazzocchi was happy as a “Pony Club Mum” spending time with her girls and seeing them happily grow up (their father, Mr. Bordone, had died when they were very small soon followed by their grandfather and Giovanna had found herself with the immense responsibility of running the business and the family on her own) in a very pleasant environment in which sport and taking care of their ponies was also an educational way of life with significant values. A few years later, however, when the routine of shows and the boredom of unchanging and not always appreciated company prevailed over her initial enthusiasm, Giovanna Mazzocchi started to adapt this part of her life to her own normal rhythms, following her extraordinary planning and entrepreneurial capabilities. “I was really bored with getting their stocks and pins ready and spending hours at shows doing nothing at all. The girls were increasingly busy and started to do well, which resulted in their first trips abroad. So I started to work on stabling the horses in a yard that was our own and that would provide us with a different perspective of how this wonderful passion should be experienced. We already had a place, south of Milan in Vairano, in the province of Pavia, on our estate, which was already the beating heart of the magazine Quattroruote and its Automotive Safety Centre. We spent all our weekends there anyway just as we still do.

It was then that I too developed a passion for horses and enjoyed concentrating in this new world on the aspects I have always been most interested in. I certainly can’t say it was the ideal place for a stud farm or an equestrian centre because of the climate and the land, but since we have technology and I am seriously interested in applying it, we embarked on making the place a model yard. So as to achieve this I summoned the best agronomists and technical experts to prepare the land and tracks. Clay and the lack of water were the main issues. Her daughter Susanna, who holds the record of having represented Italy in both eventing and dressage World Championships as well as having ridden in two Olympic Games, has now been joined on the team by Stefano Brecciaroli, the great Italian undisputed champion who has achieved his greatest results riding a horse owned by Giovanna Mazzocchi. “Stefano has allowed me, with decidedly different feelings, to experience the joy of taking part as an owner in two other Olympics in addition to those I experienced with Susanna. When my daughter was riding, I was gripped by fear and that is certainly not the best way of watching a competition.

On the other hand, alongside much joy, there was never a lack of anxiety and excitement. Apollo, the horse I bought for Stefano, was really one I would describe as “noble” and Stefano brought out the best in him. He is now enjoying his welldeserved retirement in Sabina, near Rome, at his rider’s stables. I thought that was the right tribute to pay to both of them.”

Vairano is still the Bordone family’s ‘buen retiro’. A constantly evolving centre of excellence in which activities have multiplied, with now about eighty horses permanently stabled there. International appointments are significantly echoed in the excellence of Eventing, riders are taught by very high level coaches and carry the stable’s colours to the highest levels. There is also a Pony Club and grandchildren are already members.

Giovanna jokes about this, “Now I am both an equestrian mother and grandmother.

Le foto di cavalli di Arthus-Bertrand sono l’esempio dell’emozione.

“An Arab legend narrates that Allah used the south wind to create the horse; to create Arthus-Bertrand he used a draft of air.” This was how the great French photographer was described by Jean Louis Gouraud, a journalist and author described in Wikipedia as a historian and a living encyclopedia of horses and equestrian sports, a philanthropist and the publisher of a hundred literary works dedicated to horses over a twenty-year period.

It is a definition that is a perfect fit for this eclectic artist, who has just become an over-75, who, although specialised in aerial photography (his book ‘The Earth seen from the Sky’ published by Mondadori in 2002 was a global success), has never stopped investigating the special relationship between human being and animals through his portraits.

by Yann Arthus-Bertrand on this subject; it is a wonderful collection of amazing photographs of spectacular subjects. The photographs of horses taken by Arthus-Bertrand are an example of emotions, the perfect result of a mix of passion, professionalism and artistic genius.

He has loved animals of every kind ever since he was a little boy and its was with them that he started to work when he was still very young, managing a nature reserve in France. It was, however, in Kenya in the Masai Mara, where he had gone to study lions, that his successful career as a photographer began. “It was there, during an excursion in a hot-air balloon that I discovered how beautiful the earth was seen from up above.”

Seen from the sky, the earth conquered him and became his piece de resistance as far as his profession was concerned, but he continued to be enchanted by the world seen from below, or rather the world of animals.

He was the first during the ‘90s to take photographs of animals using the same technique fashion photographers used when portraying models; a photographic studio, a uniform backdrop, studying the studio pose, the lighting, the lights and the shadows.

On every journey he made to document nature, Yann Arthus-Bertrand found a way of devoting his time and his attention to horses too; in Africa, Germany, India, Ireland, Island, Italy, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Qatar, Russia, the United States and other countries. He went all the way round the world more than once so as to return home with tens of thousands of photographs, increasingly distancing himself from the classical static stereotype of academic equine portraits.

His horses are always fiery, lively, exuberant and always, in the most diverse geographical and temporal settings, they express the close relationship with human beings almost as if to establish how closely the destinies of men and horses are linked and to what extent every horse is not only the product of a geographical region, but also reflects a culture and a civilisation.

Fifty years old and he keeps on going. Lanfranco Dettori rounded up the number on December 15th, but what once upon a time seemed more or less to indicate the possibility of retiring from competitive sport, was instead nothing but yet another transition moment in a career that still does not even contemplate the words “the end”.

“Lester Piggott retired when he was almost 60 and I will keep on going for as long as I continue to enjoy riding. Obviously I have reduced my workload, restricting commitments and I no longer travel around the UK as if I were running on a hamster wheel. Luckily, I can devote myself to the most important and qualitative races and horses. What more could I possible want?”.

The last few years have really been filled with satisfaction for Frankie, riding thoroughbreds that have earned a place in the history of the most traditional classic races in the whole of Europe. In particular, riding Enable, he has won the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes three times and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe twice, while with Stradivarius he was first past the post three times in the Ascot Gold Cup and has won as many trophies over longer distances.

Dettori was almost 16 when he won his first race as an apprentice jockey and that happened on November 16, 1986 in Turin, riding Rif, a horse that his father Gianfranco, known as the “Monster”, had bought especially for him. He was instead over 17 when he won his first race in England on June 9, 1987 at Goodwood, riding Lizzy Hare, a mare that had the same name as a secretary who worked for Luca Cumani, Frankie’s reference trainer in Newmarket to whom Dettori senior had entrusted his son so that he would become a man as well as a top jockey.

For some time now Frankie has been an icon in the world racing. The “boy who smiles” has won races in 22 countries and boasts a palmarès that includes many of the great races that matter, among them eight Ascot Gold Cups, seven King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and six Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. His “Magnificent Seven” on September 28, 1996, at Ascot, when he won all seven races of the day at the racetrack in Berkshire, remains a unique feat in racing history and one that is probably unbeatable. It has also become his... autograph, consisting of a “Dett” and a 7 inside a circle.

These victories have also been the best possible remedy for setting aside negative moments in his life; a couple of disqualifications linked to the use of cocaine (in particular one at the end of 2012) and above all a dramatic plane crash on June 1, 2000, which he miraculously survived with a broken ankle and various injuries and bruises (his colleague Ray Cochrane also survived while the pilot Patrick Mackey was killed).

On the eve of the Covid lockdown ordered in Great Britain on December 16, Lanfranco celebrated his first 50 years in a London restaurant together with his family (his wife Catherine and his children Leo, Ella, Mia, Tallula and Rocco). Time for a brief holiday in Barbados and by mid-January he was back racing in Dubai: instantly riding a winner, because he is after all Frankie Dettori, not just anyone.

Tutto cominciò all’Ippodromo SNAI San Siro.

It all began at SNAI San Siro Racecourse: Lanfranco Dettori started to ride at the Milan racetrack, which during the 1980s was still his father Gianfranco’s “base”. At the time the number 1 among Italian jockeys – and not only - Dettori Sr often took his youngest child with him and very soon Lanfranco devoted himself to saddles and whips, also because his passions certainly did not include school and homework.

On June 25, 1986, aged 15, he made his debut as an apprentice jockey at San Siro.

He was not placed riding My Charlotte, but he did after all do better than when he raced ponies at the age of ten and was thrown by tiny Silvia, got back into the saddle and finished last.

Since then, the man everyone now calls Frankie has always returned to SNAI San Siro Racecourse with great pleasure. He has also won many Milanese Grands Prix on the racetrack near the city he was born in, in particular the Jockey Club Cup on six occasions, in 1993 riding Misil, with Shantou in 1996, with Kutub in 2001, Cherry Mix in 2005, Schiaparelli in 2009 and Campanologist in 2011.

TOTILAS: THE LEGEND The news of Totilas’ death came in mid-December of a horrifying 2020. This news of the death of a horse, which in the past twenty years had been the most talked about in the world of dressage and not only, spread like wildfire. He had been retired from competitions in 2015 and was standing at stud in Germany at Paul Schockemohle’s stables.

Ridden by Edward Gal, he was and will always be remembered as one of the greatest stars, also sold at a top-price, in the history of this fascinating discipline.

A powerhouse of elegance, precision and physical strength, Totilas expressed himself in perfect harmony with his rider. When he entered an arena, he left both experts and spectators speechless. Edward Gal had very quickly understood that this was an extremely special horse.

Even as just a 6-year-old, this black stallion born in 2000 had instantly seized the spotlight and clearly showed-off his unlimited talent. The year during which Gal collected the first results of his work and attracted the attention of highranking dressage experts was 2008, when, during the Small Tour in Aachen, this combination easily made light of performances provided by other competitors. In spite of this, no one could have imagined that very soon, the black KWPN would already have achieved results that gave him the right to become known as a legend…. Surrounded by overall amazement and enthusiasm, the following year this combination improved the world record for points on three occasions, taking it for the very first time to over 90% at Hickstead. At the end of that season, during the FEI World Cup leg at Olympia in London, he triumphed, with the second pair in the ranking finishing a significant ten points behind.

Edward Gal and Totilas’ lovely fairy tale continued with another record, when, at the Lexington WEG, this combination won three gold medals: Team Gold and Individual Gold in both the Grand Prix and the Free Style.

Considering that the horse was 10-years old, one would have expected it to dominate the world stage for who knows how long, but just a few weeks after the World Championships shocking news was released. Paul Schockemohle, already the crown jewel in the world of German show jumping and one of the most respected breeders in the world, had bought the horse for a sum that the well-informed believed was close to €10 million.

Gal was devastated by his loss and had even said that he would have considered changing nationality as long as he was permitted to continue to ride that horse.

Totilas was instead entrusted to the German rider Mathias Alexander Rath.

The separation of the initial rider/horse combination was followed by a lengthy series of injuries that affected both the horse and its rider, interrupting Totilas’ triumphant march. Awaited with great excitement at the London 2012 Olympics, for example, Alexander Rath was unable to ride due to glandular fever…

Totilas’ career ended when he was 15 years old with no individual medals added to those already won with Edward Gal, but providing a valuable contribution to those won by the German Team at the European Championships.

His was the blood of a champion.

Buenos Aires - Il quartiere Palermo oltre ad essere un barrio “muy elegante” è il quartier generale degli a ppassiona ti del ca vallo. È lì che il Polo, proprio di fronte all’ottocentesco ippodromo di galoppo, ha la sua “Ca ttedrale”. Ed è lì che ogni anno il primo saba to del mese di dicembre va in scena la finale del Campeona to Argentino Abierto de Polo.

L’evento, quanto a fascino e storia (prima edizione nel 1893) è classifica to nel mondo dello sport al pari di Wimbledon per il tennis, del Super Bo wl per il football o di Montecarlo per la Formula 1. Quel tipo di esperienza insomma ca pace di far tremare i polsi anche a chi con i ca valli, e tanto meno con i polo pon y, non ha nulla da spartire.

Diciassettemila spetta tori ordina tamente distribuiti in due linee su ripide tribune all’interno dell’impianto e fuori dall’ingresso una gran folla di gente che si confonde con i ba garini. Da loro il biglietto per la finale può costare sino a mille dollari.

ABIERTO ARGENTINO DE POLO Buenos Aires – In addition to being a “muy elegante” area, the Palermo district is the headquarters for all those with a passion for horses. It is there that one comes across Polo’s “cathedral” just opposite the 19th century racetrack. It is there that every year the finals of the Campeonato Argentino Abierto de Polo are held on the first Saturday of December.

Thanks to its allure and its history (it was held for the first time in 1893), in the world of sport this event ranks equal to Wimbledon for tennis, the Super Bowl for football or Montecarlo for Formula 1 racing. It is one of those experiences that can make even those who have nothing to do with horses let alone polo ponies, go quite weak at the knees.

Seventeen thousand spectators are tidily distributed along two lines on the steep stands inside this location with crowds gathered outside the entrance mixing with ticket touts. Tickets for the final match can cost up to 1,000 US$.

For the Capital Federal it is unquestionably the most important sports event of the year and one of the most famous in South America, as well as being an icon for all this equestrian sport stands for in Argentina.

A sport with thousand-year-old traditions, (two thousand years of history first mentioned in Persia) polo was imported to Argentina at the beginning of the last century

by British officers who had discovered it in India. Argentina became its Mecca.

In what is a “rural” country par excellence, polo is a lifestyle in the philosophy of the “campo”: the countryside. Qui gli ordini di posti sono ridotti all’osso. L’abbigliamento è casual, firma to con elegante discrezione: occhiali scuri e panama vanno per la ma ggiore. Il polo nel mondo, quello dell’alto goal di handica p (vale a dire quello gioca to dai migliori che al massimo -solo 8 nel mondo a ttualmente- hanno hp. 10) che sta a vendo un discreto incremento di eventi si gioca in funzione della presenza degli argentini che nel periodo di massimo splendore sportivo (normalmente dai venti ai quarant’anni) sono tutto l’anno in trasferta per partecipare ai tornei che si organizzano nei vari paesi.

Da ottobre a dicembre tutti rientrano però alla base per dare vita ad una sta gione di tornei che costituisce la vera “serie A” del polo e che, come detto, individua nell’Abierto di Buenos Aires (riser va to alle otto migliori squadre) la sua massima espressione. Per chiunque ami il polo il richiamo dell’Argentina ad inizio dicembre è fortissimo. Arrivano ospiti da tutto il mondo. Nei dintorni di Buenos Aires, nell’arco di sessanta chilometri ed in estancie da sogno, si sviluppa una vera e propria università del polo: si giocano le “pra tiche” (si chiamano così le partitelle di allenamento), si assiste ai tornei di massima leva tura, si comprano i migliori ca valli che i migliori polo-players mettono a punto come vere e proprie macchine da corsa, si riesce ad andare in campo con i migliori gioca tori del mondo senza troppi problemi.

Un ca vallo da polo che possa giocare un torneo ad alto goal di handica p (un gioca tore che si rispetti deve a verne almeno sei/otto) può costare dai 50 ai 150.000 dollari e per portarlo in Europa ce ne vogliono circa settemila in extra. Nella sola zona di Pilar, dove pullulano i club se ne allevano oltre quindicimila. Tutti i gioca tori argentini importanti (un migliaio i tessera ti ma circa cinquemila i pra ticanti) hanno la scuderia con i ca valli di allenamento con un centinaio di ca pi nei pressi della ca pitale e l’allevamento (4/500 ca pi) più lontano in regioni dove il costo dei terreni non è proibitivo come nei dintorni della ca pitale.

Dicono che il fascino del gioco quando ti prende non ti lascia più. Molti “pa tron” (i corrispondenti degli arma tori delle barca da rega ta) lo confermano. Affascina ti dal modello “rural-polo life style” uniscono l’utile al dilettevole e con il conforto di monete forti sul pesos sono prota gonisti di interessanti operazioni immobiliari. Anche l’Abierto di Buenos Aires ha fa tto quest’anno i conti con la pandemia. L’evento si è svolto ovviamente a porte chiuse. L’impa tto con le tribune contingenta te e l’assenza di tutto il contorno di stand commerciali e momenti di a ggregazione è sta to scioccante ma il livello dello sport è rimasto immuta to. La Dolfina di Adolfo Cambiaso ha scritto per l’ennesima volta il suo nome nell’albo d’oro dell’evento. È sta ta la vittoria numero dodici e l’otta va consecutiva. Cha peau!

It is in the “corrego”, the most popular stands that are the kingdom of supporters, that one comes across petiseros (the young men who look after polo ponies and can easily be recognised because of the faded jeans, espadrillas and traditional flat caps) who mingle with screaming children and modest families representing three generations united in their passion as well as elegant Europeans who have not found room in the more aristocratic main stands. Here seats are assigned in a haphazard manner. The dress code is casual, and is characterised by discreet elegance; dark glasses and panama hats can be seen everywhere. There is little interest for what is going on around them, and all attention is concentrated on the vast playing field (275 x 150 metres). Even VIPS go unnoticed. Diego Armando Maradona was a regular and a huge supporter of his fraternal friend Adolfo Cambiaso, as was David Nalbandian. They both watched the matches from the back stage wearing the Cambiaso team, Dolfina, shirt.

Polo everywhere, high goal polo that is (hence polo played by the best players who at best have a handicap of 10 – currently only 8 in the world) is experiencing a reasonable rise in the number of events played, thanks to the presence of Argentinean players, who in the years of their greatest sporting splendour (usually between the ages of 20 and 40) spend the whole year travelling to play in tournaments organised in various countries. From October to December, however, they all return home to participate in a season of tournaments that is polo’s top league and, as said, sees in the Abierto in Buenos Aires (reserved to the top eight teams) its highest level.

Anyone who loves polo experiences a powerful call from Argentina at the beginning of December. Guests arrive from all over the world. In the area surrounding Buenos Aires, within a range of 60 km and set in beautiful estancias, a real polo university comes to life: “Practice” (as training matches are called”) gets underway, one watches tournaments of the highest possible level, the best polo ponies are bought and fine-tuned by the best polo-players just like real racing cars, and it becomes possible to play with the best in the world without too many problems.

A polo pony capable of playing in high goal tournaments (a respectable player should have a handicap of at least 6/8) can cost up between 50 and US$ 150,000 and shipping it to Europe means an additional US$ 7,000. In the Pilar area alone, where there are dozens of clubs, over 15,000 polo ponies are bred. All the important Argentinean players (about a thousand registered but more or less five thousand who play) have stables in which there are about a hundred polo ponies in training near the capital and with stud farms (4-5,000 ponies) further away in regions in which the price of land is more accessible unlike the areas surrounding the capital.

They say that once one has been enchanted by this sport one will never be free of it.

Many “patrons” (rather like the owners of racing yachts) will confirm this. Fascinated by the “rural-polo life style” they mix business and pleasure and assisted by the power of stronger currencies compared to the pesos, are known for their interesting property deals. The world of polo is this too….

Even the Buenos Aires Abierto has had to come to terms with the pandemic this year. The event was held behind closed doors and the impact of the empty stands and the absence of all the trade stands and moments of entertainment was a shock, but the level of the sport remained unchanged. Adolfo Cambiaso’s Dolfina team once again inscribed its name on this event’s Roll of Honour and this was its twelfth win and the eighth in a row. Chapeau!

Appassionata amazzone, master in Business Administration Fashion and Luxury, Vanessa ha ereditato l’amore per i cavalli dal padre Tiziano, tutt’ora attivissimo in gara e nella organizzazione di attività per la categoria degli “Ambassador” (over 45) della FISE. Vivere l’azienda è per lei vivere la famiglia.

“Abbiamo fondato Safe Riding nel 2016 quando di ritorno da una visita da Equiline abbiamo avvertito l’esigenza di questa affermata azienda di trovare un partner per allargare il raggio di attivita’ anche ad attrezzature tecniche quali le staffe. Avevamo il know-how giusto per studiare i materiali migliori grazie ad un nostro centro di sviluppo molto importante collegato all’azienda di famiglia che produce sensori per il meccanotessile. La nostra passione ed esperienza di “utenti – sport equestri” si sono combinate con l’alta tecnologia. Volevamo e abbiamo fatto un prodotto mirato per la sicurezza che fosse efficace al 100%. La mia sensibilità femminile, e qui ricordo che l’80% del nostro mondo è costituito da donne, mi ha fatto poi pensare ad un prodotto che catturasse l’attenzione delle nostre fortissime “quote rosa”.

A TALK WITH VANE SSA BARE A Vanessa Barea is Safe Riding’s young CEO. Determination and specific objectives have resulted in this start-up achieving significant results in just three years.

With a passion for riding and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration Fashion and Luxury, Vanessa inherited her love for horses from her father Tiziano, still competitive in the show jumping.

For her the company and her family are one thing.

“We founded Safe Riding in 2016 when, returning from a visit to Equiline, we perceived this successful company’s need to find a partner in order to extend the range of its activities to include technical equipment such as stirrups. Thanks to a very important development centre linked to our family business that produces sensors for textile machinery, we had the right know-how for studying the best materials. In this, our passion and experience as “equestrian sports users” merged with high technology. We wanted to manufacture a product specifically aimed at safety that would be 100% effective, and we did. My female sensitivity – and this is a good time to remind people that 80% of our world consists of women – also led me to think of a product that would attract the attention of our “female quotas”.

In the panorama that is the setting for Safe Riding’s success, in northern Europe and above all Scandinavian countries, people choose Safe Riding stirrups because of their safety guarantee, while in Poland and Italy, other very important markets for our products, riders are very sensitive to the appeal of our products’ decidedly special look.

Nowadays equestrian sports involve not only tradition but also technology and there is much that is currently undergoing great change.

Having immediately chosen important partners such as the Italian Equestrian Sports Federation (FISE) and companies with the same outlook as ours such as Kep Italia, has proved to be extremely important, just as having chosen a group of testimonial riders has helped us immensely.
