In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenged forms and conventions of real media products?
Lighting: In our final film we decided to add a effect so that the lighting appeared darker within the house and forest after Kate had been possessed by the doll. We used this to show the audience how the dynamics between the characters was changing because of the doll possessing Kate. Furthermore, dark lighting is a typical convention of horror films as it builds the tension.
Music: Within the final film we decided to edit in non-diegetic sound such as, the sound effect for when the doll is seen in close up shots. The sound effect was crucial in building up the tension in our final film. In the video below is the poltergeist sound effect we used for when the doll appears on screen.
Plot: The plot in our final film is nonlinear as it shows the dead body of Kate at the beginning of the short film. We done this because it lead the audience to question who is going to kill Kate and who is the antagonist.
Weapon:
Within horror films typical weapons that are usually used are guns, and knifes. Therefore, the prop of a photo frame that James uses in order to stop Kate strangling him and to defend himself challenges the codes and conventions of horror films. The use of the photo frame connects with the audience as it shows that before Kate was possessed they were a happy couple.
Hidden Antagonist: Within our final film the identity of the protagonists and antagonists is hidden until the very end when the character of James kills Kate. This is because until that point the character James is seen as passive until the end and scared of his partner Kate. The doll is the main antagonist in the film as it is the doll that possesses Kate and makes her abuse her partner.
Characters: In our final film we decided to have only two characters in the film who are young adults. We chose this in order to appeal to our target audience who are aged between 15 and 25, so are young as well. We chose to have a young female in our film as they are usually seen as innocent and vulnerable in horror films and we wanted to challenge that throughout the film until she is killed at the end by the man.
