Autism is a developmental disability that affects the intrinsic behavior and abilities of a person. Numbing figures published in The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)show that on average, 1 in every 88 eight-year old children have been identified with ASD. In fact, ASD is almost five times more common in boys (1 in 54) than in girls (1 in 252), which shows that boys are particularly prone to autism. In reality, the figures for Autism may be even higher since in some instances doctors misinterpret the symptoms of those with Asperger’s syndrome as well as those on the lower end of the Autistic spectrum.

Neurologists and scientists are still trying to determine the causes of Autism Spectrum Disorder and are exploring the genetic influence on the condition to try to improve our understanding of the disorder.

Modern treatment approaches have had a great impact on the symptoms of autism, but changes to behavior and conditions are slow to achieve. These approaches often include applied behavior analysis (ABA), developmental models, structured teaching, speech and language therapy, social skills therapy, and occupational therapy.
