About me

“I’m a caring designer, a life enthusiast, a passionate knowledge seeker and a writer.” I care about people, and I love making friends with different types. I am being called a friendly person, very often. As for me, getting to know a person's life story, thoughts and behaviors is an exciting task. Only when I truly understand and touch the very bottom of a person's heart can I design a good thing for him, this is what I believe.

Co-living Slippers are composed by smart slippers, a charging board, and the App. Inside the slipper is the sensor insole, which conducts gait analysis and records life trace at home. Through the App, users are enabled to instantly acquire health and living information with ease.

Design Research Build with Empathy Being roommates, the elderly could constantly immerse in social vitality, and the youth could be lighten their massive rental burden. They could feel the warmth of home during co-living, and eventually become unrelated families. Originated in Europe Cross-generational co-living was first originated in the Netherlands as an effective method against problems derived from aged society. Later Germany and Japan imitated this new living pattern and developed their own different style. It is still considered a very novel living pattern since it has only be runned for 5 years. Does it fit in Taiwan? Cross-generational Co-living Cross-generational co-living is a new living pattern that deals with aged society. Through making young and old generation roommates, cross-generational communication and resource sharing are expected to be achieved.

Taiwan is facing the crisis of aging society as well. However, the software and hardware of Taiwan’s are distinct from those of the mentioned countries’. Plus, the society is still unfamiliar with the concept of crossgenerational co-living. We need to figure out how to transplant this prevailing living pattern to Taiwan.

Cross-generational co-living in Taiwan

Cooperation with 9floor 9floor is a space management team who is committed to create co-living lifestyle for Taiwan. They gather those in need and build them residences, in which people feel like home staying.

Among numerous co-living plan, 9floor also tried to implement the concept of cross-generational co-living in Taiwan. They have been recognized by New Taipei City Government, cooperated with Urban and Rural Bureau, and carried out the very first experimental plan of cross-generational co-living in Taiwan in Long En Social Housing. During the experiment, 9floor’s purpose was to find out the operating mode that fit Taiwan the most. By combining with Taiwanese culture and living habit, they can make a foreign living system more appropriate for Taiwan’s local condition.

Observations during the stay

We were fortunate to meet one of the co-founders of 9floor, Jerry Wang, in a workshop called Design for Taiwan, which was held by Flytech. After discussing with Jerry, we determined our collaborative mode, where we took 9floor as our design client. We entered 9floor to interact with the organizer and residents, and obtained further understanding toward the field. We even signed a contract with 9floor and Urban and Rural Bureau of New Taipei City, allowed to live in one of the 9floor residences based on our project.

Poor health management toward the elderly We shared the apartment with a youngster and an elder. After interacted with them respectively, we realized that since the space was reconstructed from social housing, it now lacks protective systems on both software and hardware aspects. For the elderly, they need a more complete health management system while being unconscious on their own vulnerable health. For their family dependent, they are concerned about aged people living in unfamiliar environment and exposed in danger without people offering immediate aid. In addition, for the young roommates, they also worry about being liable but unhelpful at the same time when the elders encounter an emergency. Unestablished living mode 9floor’s original intention of holding cross-generational co-living is that through analyzing the different routine, interactions, and living details between the residents, they can adjust existing software and hardware and make it more suitable for Taiwanese to live in. As a result, collecting more data about the residents’ living situation would empower 9floor to know the residents’ need better while planning living space, assigning roommates, and holding events.

Design Goal After understanding the residents’ view deeper, we found out what they expected was a natural living environment built without specific purpose. We considered that the way 9floor establishes household health system should make the residents feel comfortable and relieved. As slippers play an essential role for household lives, we made the most usual product the medium of health management and life record.

Smart Slippers As a wearable device that blends into daily lives naturally, the product has the same appearance of regular slippers. It changes people’s stereotype toward smart products. And it is also available for customized color choices.

Gait Analysis G a i t a n a l ys i s syste m a t i c a l l y measures, describes, and evaluates the parameter involved in human action. Everyone has different walking habits. The walking posture influences the m e c h a n i ca l s i t u at i o n o f o u r lower limbs when walking. Based on biomechanics, we use the sensors in the sole to measure the force distribution while walking, conduct gait analysis after transferring which into visible scientific data. Via comparing personal data with Big Data, the product can help diagnose hipknee-ankle-foot diseases, frailty, neurodegenerative diseases, and so on.

COLOVE a companion robot for elders who are not familiar with digital devices to send their greetings to their children

A cooperative project with the engineering department students. It was a 3 months project. There are 2 designers, 5 engineers. The expected outcome of this project is to build a humancentered designed companion robot, and is capable to work.

problem As children grow up, most of them find jobs or get married in another place. For someone, they seldom go back and visit their parent. Their parents contact them mostly via phone. However, they are sometimes too busy to spare some time to chat with their parents. This leads to a result that both sides are not satisfied with the way they interact.

"I miss my son, however, he's too busy and can't come home. I can only call him, but sometimes he is not available." "Mom called again...I was just in a meeting, and so I can not answer the phone for too long...I feel bad when I'm always the one to have to hang up on her. "

solutions -design a new communicational process for Nancy and Felix, they couldn't get in touch with each other whenever they want. So we want to break the time barrier. -design to fit in wth their lives we try to figure out a way to not disturb their original life style. Also, we want our design to be familiar to our users and simple to use.

features for Nancy and Felix, they are familiar with different way of communication. Nancy is not familiar with digital devices while Felix is always using digital devices.

We decided to design a mailbox for Nancy to send her written messages, and the form of the mailbox would fit perfectly to her house decoration. (below)

The elder write something on the paper, and toss it into the mailbox.

The letter will be scanned and send to their children’s email inbox. The children could respond the letter via typing.

The mailbox would print out the respond of the children for the elder to read.

internship project As the company begins to lay the target on the younger generation, Acer Design Studio(ADS) is coming up some ideas. This is a summer internship program for 2 months. My task in the program is to create a new product for young generations. I practiced the design thinking process, and for my final presentation I came up with two designs.

Social Lover

Social Loner

After we focus on two persona, we begin to create How Might We questions.

outgoing

keep a low profile

How might we design a digital product for a social lover?

like to be the center

don't really need attention

How might we design a product for young generations to reduce stress?

enjoy alone time

How might we create a product for social lovers to express their feelings?

love social activities

concepts user testing

Collecting ideas from the HMW process, we begin to come up with many concepts. From the top-left to the down-right are: social bracelet, noise free mask,"bounce it" radio and "squeeze it" powerbank. We do the user testing and decide to focus on social bracelet and "squeeze it" powerbank.

social bracelet Add friends to your social networks simple and fun! with a simple connection with other's bracelet, the two can easily add friends. (confirmation is not included)

FRIENDS /社交

SHARE /分享

CONNECT

MULTI/多功能

Display the wearers' emotions. "I'm going to a party!"

Remind the wearer of notifications No missing texts or phone calls

every bead on the bracelet represents a kind of social media, e.g. Facebook. This fulfills young generation's need to meet new people with a simple step.

squeeze-it

PERSONAL /個人的

ALONE /獨處

RELAX /紓壓

it is a powerbank which can be charged by hand squeezing the powerbank. Depending on the different levels of battery, it would have different expressions.
