Positioning Statement What do I want to gain from this experience? I am hoping to gain an understanding of what I wish to pursue as a future career. I will be learning new skills and gaining knowledge in the Fashion Industry, and I am hoping this will influence what I choose to specialise in for my final year at University. By the end of the project I would also like to have improved my organisational skills, and gained more confidence in my work.

What skills do I want to develop?

As I realised during the ‘Digital Marketing’ project, my skills in organisation and timekeeping are limited. Through this project I hope to develop these skills and be confident and happy with the work I have produced.

What existing skills/experience do I have?

My last project was ‘Digital Marketing’ where I planned, directed and edited a short promotional film for the brand ‘Supreme’. In this project I collaborated with a film student, who helped me gain skills in Adobe Premiere. This experience will be useful for the current project as we will be creating a fashion film for Graduate Fashion Week.

How is this relevant to my future career?

As I am going into this project unsure of what I want to specialise in and pursue as a future career, I am hoping to come out of it with a clear idea of both. The experience I will gain from this project and the new skills I am hoping to develop will take part in helping make the decision about my future career choice. Also throughout this project I will be working towards gaining more work experience so I can go into third year with not only more industry experience, but a definite idea of what I will be working towards after graduation.

Project Progression Th e 4 P ’s As the client is the AUB Fashion graduates, the products shown in each event will be their final collections. The price will range from each event, for example, the GFW budget will be larger than the AUB HE Summer Show as more money will be going into creating the exhibition stand, fashion film, etc. This year, the place Graduate Fashion Week will be held at is The Old Truman Brewery in London. The exhibition space is a lot larger at this location therefore there will be more room for displaying the clients work. The AUB Fashion Show will be held at Pavilion Dance South West in Bournemouth. This is an ideal location as it is easy to get to from

the University and it means family/ friends can visit the show that may not be able to make it to GFW. The AUB HE Summer Show is held at the University and displays the students work around campus. The fashion events will be promoted through social media sites (e.g. twitter), posters, event invites, a publication and website which have been specifically created for the BA (Hons) Fashion graduates. They will be used to keep the audience updated with information on the course and events. A significant point to develop from this is how each event is going to adapt to the client’s needs. Graduate Fashion Week is the main event that our client is working towards. This event showcases their final collections to industry professionals and can bridge the gap between university and industry. As AUB is only one among many showing at GFW, a lot of work will go into making sure the catwalk and exhibition stands out, for example, creating a fashion film for the opening show that makes an impact. There will also be a lot of

- 13 -

press at the event, so the graduates will be getting media attention, but unfortunately, not every student gets chosen for the catwalk. Contrasting against this is the AUB Fashion Show, where the entire event will be about the Arts University Bournemouth and its fashion graduates. The show is specifically designed so every student gets an opportunity to have their work displayed. Although this event is smaller than GFW, there is a lot more planning involved as every detail is organised by the students/graduates of the university. The final event will be the AUB HE Summer Show, which showcases the entire universities graduate work around the campus. Compared to the two previous events, the Summer Show needs a lot less organisation and is an opportunity for potential students to see the kind of work they could be producing if they came to AUB.

Evidence Concepts

of and

Underlying Principles

Professional engagement is evidenced through contact with several industry professionals (see appendix 1) through emails to source sheepskins for the exhibition stand. The purpose was to find out whether the selected companies would rent their products or sponsor AUB for Graduate Fashion Week. From the research conducted it was discovered that one company, ‘The Fabulous Fleece’, does rent their products for a small hire fee. In appendix 2 we can then see contact with customer support to find information on a Colorama backdrop from the com-

pany ‘Calumet’, to see if it was in stock and available for next day delivery. Communication skills and team working were demonstrated in appendix 3, where there has been contact with fellow students in order to organise the fashion film. They communicated with each other through a Facebook chat where they kept one another up to date with any changes and ideas they had. They chose to use Facebook over email as although it is less professional, it is more efficient and makes it easier to share images. From appendix 3, we can see organisation of the studio, contact with tutors, and ideas being shared. When creating the fashion film, excellent communication skills were shown as the group worked together to make sure everything ran smoothly even though they encountered a number of problems. In appendix 4 we can see where the group is working together to paint the set for the exhibition stand. An understanding of roles and responsibilities are shown in appendix 5, where details of the project have been shown and explained through the use of a blog. It is clearly evidencing an understanding of all the aspects involved in helping to co-design and co-produce the three fashion events, including a fashion film. Roles and responsibilities include things such helping to source items for the exhibition (see appendix 1), set design (see figure 3), organisation of the fashion film and more.

niques was completed before creating the report to make sure it was both interesting and aesthetically pleasing. Due to working closely with the film maker on the fashion film shoot, skills in setting up equipment (e.g. Colorama) and lighting were developed which will help in future shoots. Skills in Adobe Premiere were also developed as we can see in appendix 8 where the fashion film is being edited with help from the film maker. They worked together as a pair to successfully and efficiently edit the footage. As stated in the positioning statement, a decision has yet to be made regarding a specialism or future career, so any experience or skills gained in this project will go towards the application of specialist knowledge. Skills in problem solving were evidenced when the studio was unavailable for the date they required and by communicating through their film maker to organise another studio and the equipment needed, they were able

Technical knowledge and skills are shown through use of Adobe InDesign, where research into layout tech-

to successfully solve the problem. As the photography department didn’t have the required back drop colour, another back drop was sourced and sent on to a tutor to purchase. On the day of the shoot, the group faced many problems. The main issue was timing. As the makeup team took longer than expected and the studios closed early, the group had to work together to make sure everything ran smoothly so they could get as much done in the time they had (appendix 7). Due to lack of time, the group were unable to film the third year communication work, so a studio was booked for another day where they filmed and photographed the publications (appendix 6).

Enterprise & Innovation

R e f l e c t, Eva lu ate & Conclu de At the start of the project I was unsure of what I wanted to do as a career and if I would be a positive influence on the organisation of the fashion events, but I have learnt that organising and planning events such as the GFW exhibition and the fashion film are things that I am greatly interested in. Although I have always preferred working independently, I thoroughly enjoyed working alongside the other students in my group to organise the film. My aim for this project was to develop skills in organisation and time keeping, and I feel as if I have drastically improved on this. I have managed to organise my time more efficiently and completed all work before the deadlines. As a group we could have worked better to plan the shoot for the film as we ended up encountering more problems than expected, such as lack of time. Although, this then meant we gained skills in problem solving as we had to work quickly and efficiently to make sure the shoot ran as smoothly as possible. From working closely with the film team, I gained knowledge in the lighting, equipment and editing involved in creating a fashion film. I can use the skills I have learnt not only in everyday life, but also in my work. As third year is approaching, having developed my organisation and time keeping skills I will be more confident when completing my final body of work. My main goal was to have decided what I wanted to specialise in for third year. Although I have not come to a decision, I have realised there are more aspects of the 2D fashion world that I do enjoy, such as event management, organising film shoots and designing the exhibition space. I am now going to look further into these specialisms and apply for internships over the summer so I will hopefully come back with a definite career path. I am also looking forward to helping with the AUB Fashion Show and GFW exhibition stand over summer as it will be an amazing experience and a lot of hard work has gone into it. If I were to do anything differently, it would be to make sure that more planning went into the film before the shoot. Although it was successful, it would have run a lot more smoothly if we had done a test shoot and a call sheet so everyone knew exactly what they were doing and when. It also would have helped if we had a group meeting before the shoot with the film makers and makeup artists so everyone could communicate their ideas rather than it being done on the day. Overall, I feel confident with the work I have produced and I will be finishing this project feeling positive and excited for third year.

ARTS UNIVERSITY BOURNEMOUTH Learning Agreement

Name: Alice Day Course: BA (Hons) Fashion Level: 5 Unit: Design: Enterprise and Innovation Unit Code: FAC556 Credit points: 40 Study hours: 400 Tutor(s): Esther Yarnold, Tiffany Smith & Andrew Calvert Synopsis of study For my ‘Design: Enterprise and Innovation’ project, I will help to co-design and co-produce three Fashion Events showcasing the final year BA (Hons) Fashion students’ work at a local Bournemouth show, Graduate Fashion Week, and the AUB HE Summer Show. My role will be to help produce the film and images shown at each of the events, and in the magazine and website. Firstly, I will be helping to organise, direct and film the opening film for the catwalk shows, which includes behind the scenes content of the model castings and Level 6 studio work. I will thoroughly research into different genres of film to find an interesting and unique way to open the catwalk. As the theme for our exhibition is ‘Modern Skandi’, this will also be depicted in our opening film, which we will do by using, for example, pastel colours and different types of plants. Alongside helping to produce the film/image, I will also be helping with the exhibition stand at each event. My role in this will be helping to create the sets we will be using for the exhibition, styling of space and also setting up and taking down the set. I will be there to help with anything that is needed and to make sure the exhibition runs smoothly. In my last project I created a promotional video for an existing brand alongside a case study where I thoroughly researched into their identity, values and customer. I will use the skills I developed from the last project (such as creating aesthetically appealing work that reflects the brands identity clearly and also basic skills in Adobe Premier) and use it to my advantage to help produce work within my group that I am proud to show at GFW. I would like to not only improve upon my existing skills, but also turn my current weaknesses into strengths. By the end of this project I would like to be a lot better with time keeping as I have found in the past it has affected my work and overall grade. To document my work throughout the project I will be using my blog to portray all of my research and development. I will also be creating a final report which documents all of the work I have done throughout the project, which includes in depth research into each event, the client needs, the audience and the 6 P’s. It will also include an evaluation of my work and the skills I have learnt/developed throughout the project. I am hoping by the end of this project I will be a lot more knowledgeable in events planning and will have helped to co-design and co-produce three successful events. Aims A1 I will further develop the creative, intellectual and practical applications of my specialist study to the appropriate level. A2 I will demonstrate an understanding of the historical, cultural, professional and contextual frameworks, which inform my work. A3 I will be introduced to the career and future study possibilities relevant to my subject interest though the promotion of self-evaluation and review as an essential part of my personal and professional development. Learning outcomes: On the completion of this unit I will be able to: LO1 Develop existing skills and acquire new competences evidenced through a comprehensive body of work that will enable me to assume significant responsibility within organisations. LO2

Demonstrate the ability to apply underlying concepts and principles in relation to my specialist practice.

LO3 Demonstrate the qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment requiring the exercise of personal responsibility and decision making.

Assessment Components For assessment I will produce a body of work to be identified through and in the negotiated learning agreement which will include a 2000 word report plus a weekly blog. This may take the form of an online journal (utilising appropriate formats and demonstrating a range of skills which should include developmental work and practical project outcomes one of which should be a professional CV) (Tutor Assessed) 100% References www.showstudio.com www.aub.ac.uk www.gfw.org.uk Cole, J.
