Scheme design conception, 2D


The program is divided in two: the restructuring of a gallery: the Yale Union; and a new development : a L-shape tower with a flexible and generic program. It is the important seismic constraint which will guide the structure, the plan and the elevation of this new part. The diagonal columns , works as bracing system, go along the tower to meet on their extremity on each of its facades in a graphic game. The structure is omnipresent, and become the identity of the yale union. The round and sensual 70cm columns, intersect with the straight one without ever being in real intersection, because their aren’t in the same plane. Which mean that each columns , diagonal and straight, preserve their formal autonomy of continuous element, their own presence in the building. The other part of the program is the Yale Union. The gallery is installed in an old laundry of the 19th century. The starting point of the restructuring was the event room, which become also the entrance of the complex, distributing all the new needs (cafeteria, workshop, conference and artist’s residence ...). This room is actually a vacuum below the new tower, and is in proportion the negative volume of the existing building.

Cette cour est le point de départ de notre projet. Elle définit l’organisation des bâtiments entre eux sur la parcelle et leur rapport à un contexte plus large, plus diffus le long du canal. Les irrégularités du site s’en trouvent corrigées. La cours, DEPÔT BRUXELLES-PROPRETÉ de 63 mètres de large par 70 mètres de long offre un MARLY cadre, une structure à l’organisation spatiale et fonction-

The project is about the redevelopment of an industrial site to install a part of the cleaning service of Bruxelles-PropretĂŠ. Our proposal begins with the definition of a vacuum: the courtyard. Each of the buildings: administrative building, frost-free parking and cleaningmaintenance area is sticking on one of these sides leaving the fourth open on the canal.The building creates a porous limit on public space by featuring the activities of Bruxelles-PropretĂŠ in its courtyard. In many cases, the strategy used in peri-urban areas consists in creating heterogeneous architectures, floating objects around which come annexed programs. The project proposes the exact opposite. The buildings occupy the site to its limits, correct its irregularities, and organize buildings in a homogeneous way around the void. The affimation of a front built on the limits of the plot mark the public space, begining the transformation of the neighborhood along the canal. The architectural expression of the project is reduced to the purest definition of this void: its periphery. Its presence must be obvious while offering the flexibility necessary to activate its back. It takes the shap of a colonnade. A thickness that offers a transition between the different functions.

TOWERS HAVENLAAN 12 BRUXELLES 28 000 m²

Havenlaan 12 sit along the canal. The site, is currently occupied by an office building. This one will be replaced by a family of three small towers and a linear housing block, organised around a central semi-public garden. The elongated volume all along the plot with generous views on the park and the canal, is the starting point of the project. This building give the new scale to the projet, make the transition with the context, and become the new background. The main volumes - three small tower buildings - are positioned in such a way that they make the site visible in its depth from the canal. Havenlaan 12 is a family of buildings that are related in scale and materiality. The attention is given to the size and proportions, openings, entrance. The façades are built out of prefabricated, mass colored concrete panels that give each building its character and create an elegant urbanity through their massiveness. The residential buildings are simple in design with great spatial flexibility. Each building has an interior space seeks a relationship with a specific outdoor space or semi-outdoor space. Vertical circulation is centralized for effiient tower plans with all-round orientation. The complex will contain a mix of housing, hotel, public equipment and commercial spaces. The various types of housing (row houses, apartments and studios) will be complemented with private outside spaces, from gardens at the ground level until terraces, loggia’s and winter garden in the upper levels.

The context is the one of a typical Brussels block: on the street front some terraced houses with pitched roofs, which annexes and industrial workshops have been added at the end of the plot. The project set on the regrouping of five of these plots. The challenge here is to compose a new building resolutely comporain and sober taking into account all the urban planning rules of the city (facade conservation, alignment, maximum depth, set back, profile, size, consistency with the context,...). On the street front, two heritage facades have to be preserved. The new volume with unit facades includes the existing one as a stamp, in this way they can keep their own autonomy, alignment, and aesthetics. A game of symmetry is operated between the front facade and the back facade of the main building. The two last floors is cut on terraces to follow the authorized profile. A textil set on a light structure, in order to recreate the profile of the Brussels pitched roof in a virtual, flexible and porous way. We dig in the existing block, to bring a courtyard to the new housing, necessary to find some qualities of habitability. A portico with climbing plants unifies and frames the mineral courtyard. This one is shared by the building on the street front and the workshops at the bottom of the plot, conserved and converted into a single-family house.

EXTENSION MUSIC CENTER SAGHERAA BARHAIN 30m²

Design development conception, 2D, details, model

1 Contexte urbain


The program is about renovation and extension of a small music center. The difference between the surrounding vernacular architecture with this one is only in the extreme precision of the drawing, its pure geometry. The existing building consists of three rooms in a row to renovate. The extension of the center is the addition of three small independent buildings, each has a single function: kitchen, Majlis, toilet. The idea is to follow the size, proportions, and thickness of each of the three existing rooms for the new part. A squarish courtyard surounded by the building distributes the new rooms as well as the existing building. The fourth side of the courtyard ends softly: just a curtain , a metal mesh support by a big steel beam. The architecture is reduced to the minimum : niches and glazed doors developing in the thickness of 60cm of wall. The materiality is also reduced to perforated steel coated in whitish for all the opening and polished concrete.

DEGREE ZERO TOUR ET TAXI SANATORIUM


What is the degree zero of architecture - The original concept of Barthes transposed from writing to architecture resulted to a plurality of interpretations whose analysis led us to offer our own definition, related to the theme of Supernormal proposed by the Production Unit workshop: The degree zero could consist of what to add to the Real built to reveal the architecture that is already present. It would be then a gesture which, applied to the Ordinary, background of our daily life, would work to strengthen the effect of presence. The Ordinary, in this context which we are interested in, is the one formed by the anarchic extensions updated by the railway track that separate the blocks at the north of Tour and Taxi. The project is conceived as the ultimate extension: the structure of the building located in a plot of the block comes pouring out in front of the shear walls of the housings, in the hollow formed by the old railway track recently converted into a park. The intervention is, by its orientation and its program - a sanatorium- wants to reconnect with the park and accomplish the faรงade reversal already begun by extensions. In its composition, structure makes manifest the contradiction between the regularity of the beam-pole and the irregular drawing of the plot which extends the housings plots. It aims then to build up a rationality base architectural to reveal the spontaneous constructions. Chancel & Loizidis






















PUBLIC SQUARE DON BENITO EUROPAN

The project is about a creation of a public square to Don Benito, for the competition Europan, on the current wild parking behind the church. Since the creation of the main square in front of the church, the city is expanded and the population increased. It then misses a vacuum for the current scale of the city. I merged the square in front of the church with the one located at the back to increase the area of the main square. So we have a unity square with a church as central object, allowing to upgrade the existing heritage. I redefined the limits of space synthetically, relative to the various unaligned buildings surrounding the new square. I create a new facade to homogenize the perception of the square, resuming in a minimal way, the rhythm of columns, existing on one of the facades of the square, for the gallery, the covered platform, and the tree trunks. I draw a horizontal line in order to unify (in our perception) the different sizes of the buildings bordering the square. Given the Don Benito weather, roofs and trees allow a shelter protecting the pedestrians from the sun. With least means and most of neutrality with the aim of adaptability, I restructure formally the square and offer qualitative empty spaces.












KING’S ARTHUR MUSEUM ARCHMEDIUM CAMELOT


The program is a research and tourism project centering around the legend of King Arthur and his castle. It is situated in the hill of Cadbury in England. I create a series of blocks that sink into the topography. Referring to ruins, I wanted to work on the concept of sedimentation: these blocks emerging from the earth, would be an additional layer in the landscape, drawing a horizontal along the bank . Its integration would play on the illusion of the existence of the legend. Between these differents blocks, I established a consistency in elevation, with a very neutral and high faรงade, using the same module, materiality and opacity. I use the gabion for a smoother integration into the landscape and the mysterious luminous atmosphere it gives of the inside of the museum. The building is located perpendicular to the arrived path, to face the village. Each groove between blocks allows, the crossing at the top of the hill, and the creation of openings on the side. The program is divided into three groups: the research center, reception and the cafeteria, and the museum. The museum is developped in its length, playing with differents levels.
