| “Work in progress, view from the High Line, photo taken by me in New York (2015)

intro I’m a young architect, recently graduated at Politecnico di Milano with a thesis on the new urban campus of Columbia University in New York. I always face with enthusiasm every design challenge: from furniture design, which I have always been interested in, to town planning, which I’m involved in as a teaching assistant in the Urban Design Lab at Politecnico di Milano. Aesthetic and compositional sensibility gradually led me to be keen on photography and graphic design, passions which increase my skills, providing a useful support to the communicative aspects of the project. Therefore, through this portfolio I intend to show a full spectrum of my abilities with a selection of the most significant projects I have dealt with so far. I really hope you’ll enjoy it.

Laura Montedoro Researcher, Urban Design and Landscape Architecture

MANHATTANVILLE CAMPUS a new urban campus for Columbia University

The project proposal responds to the expansion needs of Columbia University in New York through the design of a new urban campus for scientific research and education in Manhattanville, West Harlem. The masterplan, in fact, develops the idea of a university which is different from the traditional American urban campus, because it’s open to the city, the neighborhood and their flows, too. This is the reason why a key role is played by the “urban layer”: the public level in which paths and open spaces are mixed with university facilities placed on the ground floor of the buildings. This basement, a single solid element, sometimes carved, sometimes emerging from the ground to link up with its natural course, is set from the height and orientation of 125th Street, a rare exception in the regular Manhattan Grid, caused by the presence of a depression in the ground. It is precisely the physical completion of this street and its extension from Broadway to the Hudson that are the strongest gestures of the general plan.

The volumes

The Business School is the “gateway to the campus from 125th Street. This happens through the space between the public basement, dug in the ground, and the volumes hosting the didactic activities, suspended above it. These elements are connected by a double height central path, whose features are similar to those ones of the elevated highways overpassing the Manhattanville hollow: not just a connection path, but a living space from where you can observe the city and the university microcosm. SUSTAINABLE CAMPUS a university facilities mega-structure to sew up two parts of the city

The project, developed in the disused Lambrate rail yard in Milan, aims at creating spaces for teaching and research activities related to the campus nearby (Città Studi). At the same time it would involve local people in a common social and cultural system. The project has been developed on three main scales: that one of the railway, which it faces with through a massive sculptural building and where it places a new stop of the “circle railway line”; that one of the city, for which it becomes both a reference point and a view point; that one of the man, where the public space design succeeds in linking public facilities, deeply rooted in the soil, with different local realities. The project consists of two basic elements: the building, whose off-scale size intend to confront the imposing presence of the railway embankment; the soil, that is to say the modulation of the terrain through which the building is linked with the ground level and led back to the human scale.

CAMPUS CENTER

an artif icial canyon connecting city and infrastructure levels

The part of the mega-structure used as a campus center is divided into two converging arms, in which a public path makes its way leading from the level of the city to that one of the railway embankment. The path starts in the great entrance hall, where visitors are brought to the interiors by a giant cantilever placed at the end of the building. At the entrance of the campus center there are many common facilities, such as administrative offices, info points and wi-fi areas open 24 hours. At an intermediate level, instead, it’s possible to enter classrooms, associations rooms and other spaces hosting didactic activities. Finally, at the upper level, the path reach an outdoor plaza overlooking the tracks and directly linked with the new station: a massive structure which overpass the railway.

the

RECREATION CENTER a microcosm emerging from underground

The part of the building housing the recreation center lies on a swelling artificial soil, below which there’s a small universe for sports and wellness, accessible not only to students, but also to external users. In fact, the project purpose is to host the semi-private spaces within the mega-structure, and place, instead, public facilities in the emerging artificial soil. Along with the railway station and at the campus center, the recreation center consists in the core of the building: the system that allows to overcome the physical limits of the track bed.

The semi-public “soil Apparently a grassy hill, the auditorium unfolds gradually, revealing its cavernous interior from different angles while moving along the paths that twist around it and connect the different levels of public spaces.

The “mega-structure The cladding of the mega-structure consists of modular panels of GRC which give the building a strong materic expressiveness aimed to emphasize its volume. The building thus acquires an almost monumental appearance, like an archeological find lying on the ground.

TOWARDS A NEW SPRAWL preserve local identity enhancing existing connections

In a region characterized by a continuous and increasing exchange, we must take advantage of the power of communications to create urban entities which operate on a European scale and contain the cities expansion, recognizing and preserving local identities that have governed land development throughout history. Imposing a rule to the sprawl it is possible to maintain the principle of identity and apply it to the whole territory. The main purpose is to create a system based on the positive aspects of urban sprawl, with a series of small interventions controlled on a wide scale.

ri-MEMBRA-re | urban plan after Expo 2015

lab | progettazione urbana e territoriale 1

RI-MEMBRA-RE new energy for Post Expo 2015 life

The project aim is to highlight the theme of Expo 2015, “Feeding the Planet. Energy for Life”, by strengthening its own link with nutrition, agriculture, sustainability, and the concrete presence of green spaces. The Expo site thus becomes a hinge between different types of green areas: the core of a system in which open spaces and nature play the most important role as valuable resources. The system includes: the few green spaces in Northern Milan, gradually invaded by the city and linked by a path that reach Groane Park and Monza Park, too; the so-called “green ray” that allows to connect the Expo area with the city center of Milan, following Sempione axis; the connection with Parco Agricolo Sud by strengthening the structured system of farms. The installation of the new fruit and vegetable market, the expansion of the Faculty of Agriculture and the awareness of self, make it a new resource for the city of Milan.

CHOOSE YOUR BREAKS a “smart” waiting area to wisely spend time

“Clock” as the instrument measuring time; “wise” as sage, sensible; “clockwise” as the clock hands right direction; “Clockwise: choose your breaks” as the right way to spend time. The purpose of the project is to create an iconic place, where the theme “Time” is interpreted according to the site specifics. Lancetti station, which has been developed only underground, has, however, lot of outdoor space full of potential, especially if redesigned as a place where to optimize waiting time. This the reason why this area has been designed introducing several protagonists: an info gate, a series of seatings, a relaxation area with Book Crossing, a huge sundial, each one interpreting the main theme according to the different ways, fast or slow, in which the space is used.

Break areas and slow flows A belt made of corten steel covers the existing parapet and characterizes the entrance to the underground station. It represents a kind of information gate, which can display train waiting times outside, thanks to the surface drilling and the LED backlighting. Some wooden seatings integrate with the sloped lawn in front of the gate, matching their section with the different grades of the soil and allowing various ways of sitting according to time availability. An integrated system of floorings, chairs, tables, vending machines and bookcrossing facilities, creates a rhythmically structured landscape and interacts with the cafè under the arcades. A sundial surrounded by a long half-round seat represents the slow passing of time linked with natural rhythm and ecourage people to stop and take part in it.

STUDY/STUDENT UNION AREA adaptable pieces of furniture to recover wasted space

The project aims at recovering wasted and pass-through spaces thanks to adaptable furnishings, which works as an highly visible point and an information desk for the students unions, but they can also become a study area when necessary. Different pieces of furniture have been designed using cheap materials and simple assembly techniques, which allow a fast and easy replacement of worn elements. The pillars of the corridor are totally incorporated inside cabinets of different shapes and sizes, which eliminate modularity and extend themselves towards the pass-through space to invite people to stop in the redesigned area. Coloured adhesive rugs signal the main entrances to the student union area, attracting attention to the central patio framed by some massive red portals.

AUTOPRODUZIONE read, think, understand, do, watch, sit

The workshop “Autoproduzione: chairs by Enzo Mari” was held at the carpenter’s shop of Cascina Cuccagna by a collective of professionals fond of handcraft and engaged in social projects in urban areas. It allowed each participant to build one of the chairs designed by the Italian designer. Under the supervision of handcraft production experts, usable pieces of furniture have been shaped starting from raw material. The participants were given tools and support needed to complete the project with their own hands.

| escape from everyday life: city/street/interior scapes photos

personal work

(E)SCAPE interpret landscapes through the lens: see, compose, learn

Escaping more or less far from everyday life, to capture a landscape, considered as an environment marked by particular characteristics, do not simply stand for documenting it, but, rather, creating it through a frame, by selecting the subjects and relating them to each other within a defined field of view. In fact, to take pictures is not only a cognitive process, but also a composition of plans, volumes and lines in a balanced relation. In this case, I choose black and white photography to simplify the reading of geometries and depths, thanks only to light. The two examples of ‘City scapes’ consist in a dimensional flattening of realistic elements, as for the first one, and a three-dimensional perspective of abstract textures, as for the second one. In the ‘Interior scapes’ I tried to grasp, in addition to the strong geometric components, the predominant feature of the space: a picture within a picture, an endless ascent, a fractal. Finally the ‘Street Scapes’, constantly framing the central perspective of a road bordered by continuous facades, allow the immediate comparison of different spatial qualities characterizing each photographed place.

OVEREXPOSURE China Pavilion dismantling: breathing dust, feeling melancholy, report reality

I never forget my interests and passions either when I'm doing something else, indeed, they drive me to conceive new ideas and to create over and over again. While managing dismantling activities and verifying the time schedule in the dismantling site, I decided to take some photos to record works progression: it should be not merely a distant photo feature, but rather an attempt to capture the silence, the loneliness, the melancholic beauty pervading this place, once so crowded and dynamic as it was during the last Universal Exposition, now undressed, overexposed by the photografic lens of my camera.
