The Catalysts of Change

THECATALYSTS OFCHANGE

The monsters that controlled Hollywood and took advantage of their power.

TRUe MONSTERS

WHAT GOES UP, MUST COME

Casting couches, one-on-one meetings in hotel rooms and intimidating text messages were all part of Harvey Weinstein’s conduct for decades as one of the most powerful film studio executives. That was until enough women made allegations about sexual harassment from Weinstein that the world media paid attention. It was known for years that he had acted inappropriately around actresses and other women he would meet with under what they had anticipated as professional meetings. However, with cover ups and settlements they remained small news stories and an understanding of that was what happens in Hollywood. Since the many women came forward about Weinstein there has been a steady stream of women and men accusing other high profile celebrities of similar offences. Most of these men will not face any criminal charges but will certainly be ousted from Hollywood as it tries to clean up it’s image. These men had managed to keep their secrets away from the headlines; whether it be through settlements that remain out of court or through intimidation. Making their victims aware that if they ever decided to come forward; they had the power to not only sweep it under the carpet but potentially ruin the victim’s career. How did they garner so much power and respect and get away with their behaviour for so long? This has the capability to be the end of sexual harassment; at least in Hollywood, as we are seeing some of the most famous faces loose their careers and exiled from La La Land. However, we have seen others face similar allegations like Woody Allen and Roman Polanski, both of which are now back at the helm of big budget movies with little to no backlash. Will this current movement and outrage have its own expiry date where we forget all of this happened. Time will tell but for now it is time to hold the monsters responsible for so much upset and disgusting behaviour accountable.

“I am a 28 year old woman trying to make a living and a career. Weinstein is a 64 year old, world famous man and this is his company. The balance of power is me: 0, Harvey Weinstein: 10.” - Weinstein employee Lauren O’ Conner.

Mr. Weinstein said that in addressing employee concerns about workplace issues, “my motto is to keep the peace.” In 1997, Weinstein reached a previously undisclosed settlement with Rose McGowan, then a 23-year-old-actress, after an episode in a hotel room. The $100,000 settlement was “not to be construed as an admission” by Weinstein, but intended to “avoid litigation and buy peace.”
