3 Conditions that Worsen with Poor Oral Health

Most people think a toothache or a gum infection is a simple health problem, but studies say otherwise. Based on different publications, poor oral health may have links to major health issues. So far, these three are the most common:

Diabetes Basic logic suggests people with diabetes have a higher chance of suffering from periodontal disease, but research shows it could also be the other way around. Apparently, gum disease makes it more difficult for diabetics to regulate and stabilise their blood sugar. The study recommends treating gum disease early on to help improve the different symptoms of diabetes.

Heart Disease The American Academy of Periodontology published a study citing that people with gum disease have twice the risk of suffering from heart disease. Now, the medical world is not yet sure as to why this is the case. There is, however, a theory surrounding the study’s findings. Based on some accounts, it could be because of the bacteria’s entry into the bloodstream, which eventually attaches to plaques in blood vessels. In effect, the bacteria inflame the blood vessel and increase the risk of clots – which, by extension, could lead to a heart attack.

Pulmonary Conditions Poor oral health may also lead to pulmonary conditions, according to a study published in the Journal of Periodontology. The study claims there is a link between the occurrence of gum disease and the risk of respiratory infections, specifically chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The bacteria in the mouth may be inhaled into the lungs and lead to infections. As a result, the inflamed airways make breathing more difficult. As always, the experts recommend strict adherence to good oral health habits, such as brushing, flossing, and rinsing the mouth regularly. With these basic practices, it is possible to avoid different mouth-related conditions – and, by extension, health problems that may arise or worsen due to caries, infections, and other oral issues.
