The most recommended number of times people visit their dentist is twice a year, which is not a lot of interaction time for two people, regardless of how intimate the encounter are. Because of this, people take their dentist appointments for granted a lot. Still, there are plenty of people who would love to have a dentist nearby at all times.
There are few examples of in the UK where people do not have access to quality dental care because of the reach of the health care. The examples across the seas, and the stories that accompany many of them should be more than enough motivation to appreciate every dentist appointment.
Two of the closer examples are the Hebridian islands Islay and Jura, where people have to wait for a year if they want to see a dentist. Imagine having a cavity that needs filling, and then having to wait more than three hundred days of more eating before it gets done. The most important services are the ones that people cannot get, and having to wait for a dentist for a whole year makes it as important as anything can get. The problems do not stop there, though; the waiting goes on even when the dentist arrives.
If these places have trouble just getting dentists to commit their services full time, it makes sense that they do not have all the facilities to carry out their work. This means that patients have two problems they have to contend with once a dentist does become available to see them: contend with all the other people that were waiting for the same dentist, and waiting in substandard conditions. There have been stories of patients waiting in their cars until the receptionist comes out for them; those that do not have cars simply stand in the rain. This is not an ideal situation by a long shot, but it is a situation they have to deal with, and people in this country don’t have to deal with at all.
