MATERIAL EXPLORATION
INTRODUCTION
The several types of bioplastics are agrosources and/ or biodegradable. The agrosourced bioplastics are made from renewable organic raw materials such as vegetable glycerine. The biodegradable bioplastics are possibly derived from petrochemicals or biomass. The production, use and biodegradation of the bioplastics is completely sustainable. Bioplastic doesn’t rely on fossil fuels and has a limited rejection of Greenhouse gases during its disintegration. Research has developed a bioplastic named PLA, which is a biodegradable bioplastic produced from the fermentation of corn starch. This type is used in a wide variety of sectors, reaching from packaging to surgery and mostly used in 3D printing. Unfortunately the technical properties of these bioplastics are not as high as plastic issued from petroleum. In this booklet I will explore different methods of making plastic from agrosourced and biodegradable materials.
