Does Result Based Training (RBT) Gyms get, well – results? We investigate.
CALORIE BURN: You’ll burn anywhere from 400 to 650 calories in a session, depending on your fitness level, gender and effort.
WHO TRIED IT: Katelyn Swallow, Editor-in-Chief
WHAT IT IS: I liken it to a middle ground between F45 and CrossFit. Classes run for 45 minutes, and involve a strength-based movement such as a squat, followed by a high-intensity metcon-style sweat session.
LOCATION: South Melbourne. But you can find RBT Gyms at Airport West, Balcatta, Blackburn, Brunswick, Canning Vale, Collingwood, East Perth, Hawthorn, Joondalup, Morley, Myaree, North Melbourne, Novi, Oakleigh and Williamstown.
COST: $$$$ Memberships cost approximately $77 per week, depending on the location.
SWEAT RATING: 5 I’m far from a cardio bunny, but this hurt. You’ll definitely need a shower post-workout. S
PROS CONS
Facilities: All gyms are fitted with an InBody scanner (so you can track your results using a device more accurate than the scales) and most have an infrared sauna. Plus, members get free access to the gym’s Keystone app, where they can track their workouts and nutrition intake.
Individual coach: Every member gets assigned a coach, who regularly checks in, offers advice and helps set your macro targets.
Efficient use of time, but still tough: There’s a strength component as well as cardio, yet you’re all done in 45 minutes – perfect for a busy bee.
Class sizes are hit or miss: Sometimes there’s classes of 20, sometimes there’s classes of five, depending on the class time you opt for.
Competitive beginners beware: The workouts are hard, and while they encourage you to work at your own pace and regress any movements you find too difficult, it’s hard to not get competitive.
Cost: While RBT Gyms do combine nutrition, training and great facilities, there’s no denying that it’s pretty pricey.
